When I lived in the Bay Area, you couldn't rent a closet in San Francisco for less than $1500, and that was near The Point. Don't even mention Sunset or off Divisadero where the clubs are near that really trendy neighborhood, Something Heights.

I don't blame your friend for sticking it out and putting up with the lame ex-boyfriend. I would have done the same thing, especially paying $1100 a month and being closer to the job than having to commute on BART on a daily basis and hope there's not a malfunction on one of the lines during rush hour.

No, they're white people pictured in the article. But I must say, they're dealing with it in an intelligent way, and who knows, they might get back together, but if they don't, they truly know IT”S OVER. No DRAMA, and it meets the needs on an economic basis, by leaving emotions out of the issue.

Remember that group, MFSB, back in the 70s? They did a great instrumental version of "Cheaper to Keep Her" and it was really fly.

Okay, I dated myself with these comments, but I really was a young'un who had to listen to what my older brothers listened on the radio, the stereo, or the 8-track player, or what my parents were playing on the stereo when they had people over to play tunk or bid whist. I grew up listening to R&B and jazz very early (try 7 years of age and knew all the words to "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

One of my friends broke up with her fiance and it took him 6 months to move out. He kept saying he couldn't find a new rental and they had a 1 BR share in San Francisco for $1100/mo. If you live here you know that's a great deal. They were both on the lease. She could've moved out but then he'd string her along by telling her she could keep the place. I don't know how she kept it together. Now of course she has her great apartment and is dating again.

Well, I think Partridge is right to stay put. Divorce is business. It is about separting one's finances from a partnership. If that separation means you will wind up penniless, then no one but an idiot would disentangle when it is not financially beneficial unless they were a mascochist. Or married to a wife beater or Balfour type murderer (a la Julia Hudson).

One of the the most common ways to be impoverished is divorce. Many women who get divorced wind up in poverty it is one of the leading causes of poverty for single females with children. Sooo, Ms. Partridge is correct in the choices she has made.,

I do not even understand why she would listen to friends who obviously are clueless. Same for Mr. David her ex-spouse.

The only other arrangement I beleive they could have is to rent out the house to another couple and that would enable them to have separate living arrangements, until they could sell the property.

It is called “separation in place.” It is difficult and weird. You cannot really move on with your life. But it does allow both or one of the parties to financially regroup. And yes, black people with assets, children and or the determination not to throw away all that they have worked for because the marriage is over do it all the time. However, there does need to be a timeline because “it” is over.
