When the attacks were first reported and nobody knew what was really going on, I listened to several first-hand reports of Americans and Britons who were ushered to safety after revealing their passports to those who asked for them.

Now, these same first-hand reports are never referred to. Why? Because it goes against the narrative that claims these “terrorists” were actually targeting people from the west. When American casualties are personalized for the viewer by showing their faces on TV every 15 minutes, that narrative takes root. I'm not suggesting American casualties shouldn't be personalized for the American viewer, but an American life is no more important, to me anyway, than an Indian life, or a Swiss life, or a Pakistani life.

Report the facts that you know, report the discrepancies when they appear, and leave the spin and speculation for another day. But that would be too much like right.

You see, as with all news stories, it is the initial reports, before all the narratives take root, that provide the biggest clues to what actually happened.

If these terrorists were really targeting Americans, then why have so few been killed relative to the overall numbers of the reported casualties so far?

I just watched Charlie Wilson's War last night for the first time. Who's to say that this wasn't a covert operation by some big western intelligence agency in tandem with foreign governments in order to set the stage for something bigger?

Let me explain a couple things to you (and I know no one else here will stand with me on this):

1. Are you really dumb enough to think that the United States recruited 19 terrorists from Saudi Arabia to kill close to 3,000 of our own citizens?

2. Neither Afghanistan or Iraq are “illegal” wars. You show me something that says that a war of retribution (which is what Afghanistan was, in part) or a war of preemption (which is what Iraq was, in part) are illegal, and I'll give you the names of no less than half a dozen countries that are guilty of the same (including, most likely, whatever rock you crawled out from under).

3. Islamic extremism existed long before the United States was ever thought of (just like other forms of religious extremism). All you have to do is look at the sects of Islam that will kill fellow believers for not being “Islamic enough.” Read the Koran. Or, if that's too difficult for you, there's other books you can read (including some with pictures, so you can follow along).

4. Apparently, you don't know anything about America. We've survived a economic downturn and an attack on our country before, and emerged as the strongest nation the world has ever seen. We take our licks like every other country in the world…and we ALWAYS emerge the stronger and better for them. It will take a lot more than your prayers to bring this nation down. Good luck trying though…let me know how that works out for you.

Chopra on Mumbai: Too Controversial for CNN?

A CNN journalist interviewed Deepak Chopra last night about his take on the Mumbai attacks and how to prevent similar attacks in the future, but it looked like producers cut Chopra off when he started to get too controversial.

Chopra: What we have seen in Mumbai has been brewing for a long time, and the war on terrorism and the attack on Iraq compounded the situation. What we call “collateral damage” and going after the wrong people actually turns moderates into extremists, and that inflammation then gets organized and appears as this disaster in Bombay. Now the worst thing that could happen is there's a backlash on the Muslims from the fundamental Hindus in India, which then will perpetuate the problem. Inflammation will create more inflammation.

CNN: Let me jump in on that because you're presuming something very important, which is that it's Muslims who have carried out these attacks and, in some cases, with Washington in their sights.

Chopra: Ultimately the message is always toward Washington because it's also the perception that Washington, in their way, directly or indirectly funds both sides of the war on terror. They fund our side, then our petrol dollars going to Saudi Arabia through Pakistan and ultimately these terrorist groups, which are very organized. You know Jonathan, it takes a lot of money to do this. It takes a lot of organization to do this. Where's the money coming from, you know? The money is coming from the vested interests. I'm not talking about conspiracy theories, but what happens is, our policies, our foreign policies, actually perpetuate this problem. For another major assault in an American city….possibly Miami. Given that Miami would provide the same mix of folks in terms of international visitiors along with Jewish folks in great numbers.

Let's recall before the Twin Towers were hit, Al-Q did a trial run with an international airline where they killed a Japanese businessman…I don't recall all the details, only that hijacking the plane was the major component of training that was described in Al-Q's hit of the Twin Towers.

Let;'s also not forget that they tried to bomb the WTC in 93 right after Clinton took office.

So, doing trial runs is part of how Al-Q operates.

It did not surprise me that the team was better prepared than local police, given assault would not be an area of expertise and a hotel would have to have it's own security force if they wanted men on hand who would know the layout of the hotel.

What alarmed me most was the tid bit that the folks had likely been registered guests for days in the hotel, prior to the attack. All of that says, we all will have to endure heighten security at hotels when we travel…just like the TSA at airports.
