Screw Ralph Nader. He does NOT get a pass just because some see him as a liberal icon. This is about the third time he's pulled this type of stunt in the past year. He knows exactly what he's doing. He just thinks he'll get a pass on some fake a*s "I'm a revolutionary speaking truth to power" bs.

I guess he thinks: Gee, if I talk about poor people, I can say whatever the hell I want." WRONG! I don't care how much you talk about big business and the poor . . . you don't get a pass!

Hell no he doesn't get a pass. He thinks Obama acts/talks white, calls him an Uncle Tom, makes castrating/emasculating taunts against Obama. What??? It's supposed to be cute because he's a liberal saying it? Sorry, but I've known my fair share of race-baiting liberals. And giving Nader a pass makes just about as much sense as giving Eminem a pass to say "nigga" just because he "keeps it real."

Give me a break.

If Nader took his campaign half as seriously as he takes his rhetoric he might have had an impact as a political leader. But he's not a serious leader as far as I'm concerned. If he were serious, he would have had a plan B after the 2000 election. But he didn't.

You tellin' me he wasn't popular enough to run for governor in his home state, CT??? How about the House . . . Senate??? Hell, what about frickin' mayor??? No, in truth he's got an ego as big as any of the "corporate" politicians he likes to criticize whenever he gets the chance. A guy with good ideas, but absolutely ZERO leadership to get things done (a problem often seen with third party candidates).

As for Obama . . .I'll surely hold him accountable. But I'm gonna hold him to the same standard we've held all our other presidents. I'm gonna sit down:

1. look at his numbers in the house and senate
2. figure in the financial crisis
3. and not hamstring my thinking with some bs ideological purity that sounds good in theory, but has little practical application

I backed Obama because I want to get things done. I don't need the ideological wars. I want to get things done.

I'm a liberal and proud of it. But I'm smart enough to know that we don't always have the answers. So while Nader's busy talking to the birds (literally, if you saw his campaign ad), I and millions of others will be doing my best to move the country forward under an Obama administration.

Somebody tell Nader that Obama will be in 47 years what he couldn't be in the 184 years that his ancient azz been here on earth, and that is the most powerful person on it. Nader needs to go sit his azz in a back room and eat some graham crackers while history will still be kind to him.

What a moron.

About that Prop 8 thingy up in CA. I didn't want to touch this one BUT...Look, I'm sad for my peeps that it wasn't defeated BUT I'm becoming kind of uneasy that there is a movement afoot to place the blame on us, black people - 6% of the CA's population!

While we may have had the voting power in CA to help defeat this measure, the economic muscle that the Mormons apparently used to uphold it was HUGE. So, I ask myself, what if somebody with similar economic muscle had circumvented the church(assuming that the church is in the way) and organized to educate the black community about the importance of defeating this(assuming again that the black community was pivotal in helping to bring about it's defeat), especially if you expected the black turnout to be higher than normal? Why just assume that because blacks experienced(and still are experiencing) discrimination means that they view the gays being discriminated against in the same way? What about the responsibility that other ethnic groups had here?

I.m not saying that there may not be a problem with acceptance in our community. Personally, I don't know of any because all the people I associate with are sensitized to the plight of gay America and are very empathetic...but some old school Obama-style organization may work wonders: door-to-door in heavily black communities, internet ads, stuff on black radio, TV etc., might help. Even if you start doing it now, it may yield benefits in the future...I don't live in CA but I will do everything I can to help...Explain why it matters in simple terms. Like what of your hetero-husband or -wife died and you couldn't do X or Y or Z? Know what I mean?

But, I'm not feeling right about the blame that seems to be shifting onto us...like we are being scapegoated somehow...I don't know...something here doesn't feel right.

My issue is that blacks are so complacent in what you said correctly scapegoating. The LGBT community is looking to us now because they believe that we have won some sort of rights. Have they stretched their hands out to the black community (a socially conservative community) and did what I have been telling them to do for the past 4 YEARS? You outtlined what I have been telling to do on a large scale. Black people are told that homosexuality is a sin in their churches and community. I would have voted down the Proposition but some other still have those beliefs that are based in their religious belief. Do some peopl not understand that. I have had my struggles with trying to bridge this and I was also upset about some LGBT organizations being apathetic about the crimes that effect black gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals

They get a kick out of it because it similar to the whole "reverse racism" thing. I am not apart of it because it was voted down in other states. The people who really brought it down at the end of the day were whites because blacks probably could not have shifted it that much. Everyone should get the blame not just blacks.

A gay guy at my job, who happens to be a staunch Obama supporter, said something to me to the effect of. Its the Black vote in CA that is going to fail the Prop 8; its a shame that one group gets their rights as another gets theirs taken away.

I was so taken aback I had to stop talking, sit my ass down and PONDER what he said to us. I doubt that CA's black population could single handedly (sp) take away that right from the GLB&T community.

Im from CALI so what you have to understand is that some black pastors and church members were on TV saying that it was their biblical duty to make sure prop 8 passed dont forget that Obama had a famous anti gay black gospel singer singing at one of his rallies this probally helped people form the perception that blacks helped prop 8 pass

I don't know how 6% of the population can be a road block, but the lack of support is very sad. I moved to Cali 5 years ago from my hometown of NYC and I have to say that Cali is a strange state. I still can't get my head wrapped around it.

Interesting that you say this. I was reading Ta-Nehisi Coates' blog today and there was a pretty heated post about the fact that 60% or more of black folk here in Cali voted Yes on Prop 8. It was hot in there. Black folk were called bigots flat out.

As someone who voted No, it was depressing to read.

Back in the spring, I was talking with a friend about Obama’s chances of winning the election. I said I was fearful that white Americans might not be willing to vote for a black man for president.

He replied, “I’ll tell you why white people will vote for Barack Obama. It’s because they know you and they know me.”

And I got it. So many of us, myself included, underestimate the impact that we as as competent, articulate, professional, honest, decent, and hard-working black people have on the whites we interact with, in the workplace or other settings.

When white people see Obama, they’re not necessarily associating him with some sorry stereotypical image of black Americans.

They are also associating him with you and with me.

And the good will that we’ve created, in turn, created a reservoir of good will among white voters that Barack Obama was able to tap into, in an apparently successful manner.

So, I want to thank YOU for representing the race, and for making this historic win possible. You deserve those thanks.

Does anyone know anything about these sites that are selling tickets to the inauguration? I went on the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) website, and they said that tickets would be given to U.S. House of Rep. members and Senators. They didn't mention that these tickets could be purchased anywhere.

Hello my people, I am de-lurking to say that my heart is full today and will most certainly post one of my typically lengthy missives later this week. But suffice it say, I am an unapologetically proud, black woman of the Democratic Party today. My Party rose from the ashes last night, led by a man that fills me with immense pride - President Elect Obama, alongside our beautiful and poised First Lady, Michelle. There too was the seasoned man he can confer with in Vice President Biden and a nation filled with hope, after eight years of depair.

And what of those people that came before him, who fought and died so that he could stand on their shoulders...so that one day my as-yet-conceived-of children could stand on his shoulders, look across the horizon, and see the world as their oyster.

It's a fucking beautiful day. I'm savoring it so see y'all later.

He said something very similar a few days ago too. It was a generic "racism not an excuse" without the "education" slant. I think the Obama Presidency will certainly be a motivational tool for young and old alike. It does not however erase all of the social and racial ills that plague our communities.

He is an ass. My husband and I were in the hotel's bar last night up until around Obama got 200. All the tvs were on but I could not hear anything. I did see Bennett and Roland Martin sitting next to each other. I did not need audio to know how he was feeling based on the sour puss he was wearing. I joked with with my husband about the possibility of Bennett and Roland coming to blows last night. But hey, what's the point of Roland getting upset? Our team won.

I agree with. I couldn't bare listening to him.

Mourning Joe

Maybe they should change the name of the show to Mourning Joe. While Joe the Fumbler has tried to jump on the Obama bandwagon, my search of the MSNBC site discovers a particularly acidic attack on Obama by Scarborough from Dec. 22, 2006. Say it ain't so, Joe! Here is one highlight.

SCARBOROUGH: "Even before the final votes were tallied in the 2006 elections, politicians started lining up for the 2008 presidential sweepstakes. Without further ado, let me kill Hamlet in the first act and tell you how your favorite candidate will fare over the next 12 months.

I apologize in advance for the length of this comment. I mean ... I am going to post it but I am sorry it's so long.

I'm still trying to catch up to this reality being real. It is so outside of what I ever thought I would see in this country, or feel about this country, it's taking me time to actually let it sink in. I love reading people's reactions here because so many of them put into words what I dont' seem to have words for myself. Craig's comment about Michelle Obama for example .... I don't have words, I just don't.

So what I can actually articulate right now is:

Last night, I went over to the Obama website and sent a message of congratulations to President-Elect Obama. I mentioned the part of his speech where he named "that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one" -- knowledge and naming of a truth that which moves me at levels I can't even talk about in public.

Anyway, the real reason I am posting this is to first quote the email President-Elect Obama sent out before his speech last night, then quote the quote the automated reply I got back to my congratulations -- both of which show hints of ongoing communication and organizing the likes of which I never thought I would see:

From the email before the speech (which I'm surepretty much everyone here received: We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.

And, from from the automated reply I got last night:

... I am hopeful about the opportunities and clear-eyed about the challenges our nation faces. I look forward to working with all Americans, regardless of who they voted for, in the great project of American renewal. Enlisting the energy and ingenuity of the American people is the only way we will create the changes that so many people want to see, so Senator Biden and I hope you will remain active in your community and involved in national policy debates.

I know they're serious. I know they mean it. I know that they are going to use and build on what they have started building already. I know because I have observed that President-Elect Obama is solid and for real. I am really interested to see what emerges as the next phase of his extraordinary organizing project.

I know this comment is long already and I am now going to make it longer, and this part is going to be a little self-indulgent.

Before I knew anything about President-Elect Obama, I was questioning something very very core to my life: my involvement in social movement groups. For more than 20 years, since I was 16, social change efforts have been an intrinsic part of my life one way or another.

Starting about a year and a half ago, I began to question my involvement and connection to this work. I was coming off of some very painful dynamics in one group that I had been involved with and loved very much, coming off of struggles in that group about the value of truth about what goes on among us -- inside the "we" -- and (relatedly) about some apparent helplessness in the face of progressive/liberal white racism.

The experience, combined with other experiences I had had over time, pushed me to question my relationship to social movements overall based on my epxeriences for more than 2 decades, and conclude that what I meant by "social change" had necessary layers that most social change oriented organizations and groups did not feel as necessary. It was like losing one of the core anchors of my whole life.

There are things I gave up on in that process. Hope for change being one of them.

I am so much more "radical" ideologically than is President-Elect Obama. I am certainly to the left of him on many issues. But in what he has done and is doing, I see the enacted active catalyst of actual change in the actual collective of this nation. Not slogans or symbolic acts, as I so often saw in movements. But speaking with action in a solid way.

It is outside of my understanding of how things work for this change to come from electoral politics, let alone from electoral politics related to the U.S. President. But I see what I see, and it is true, this is most real wave of change I have ever seen in my life. I'm ... stunned and still trying to adjust my comprehension of the reality of this country to fit what is actually going on.

Again, sorry for the length of this comment.

the obama campaign rsponse is what intrigues me the most. They have acted as though they are very conversant in OODA loops.

That was awesome Michelle. I am also a bit more liberal than Obama but he brings a willingness to seriously work with everyone that I admire. I've never had so many white people smile at me or give me high fives like today! We are really and FINALLY coming together. Your namesake is the First Lady!!!!

So, I thought O seemed like a man with a heavy burden last night. He always seems to me very nimble and light on his feet....like all baskeball players seem to float slightly off the ground. Not last night...last night his feet seemed to go "ka-plunk" as he walked away from the lectern. If you don't believe me, watch the tape again... There seemed to be weights on his ankles.

I know the full weight of the task ahead came crashing down on him last night...the weight of everyone's expectations - their desperate needs. I wondered when I saw that picture of him sitting on the beach with his girls, looking out at the sea...if he was lamenting the loss of the "simple" life. After all, when he leaves that White House, his little girls will be young women. He must have thought about that with a pang of sadness as he tucked that flower behind Malia's ear.

Or, maybe I just have an overactive imagination.

His grandmother just died.

He's exhausted.

I saw it, but that's all I saw about it.

I'm sure realizing that this was the first moment in his life his grandmother was not alive for...

No, I noticed something similar as well. I saw a look of awe/anxiety as he peeked from behind the curtain before first coming out on stage.

OK....so now I feel guilty....selfish really...like we're being greedy and depriving the Obamas of something...and truthfully, we are.

On the night she officially lost the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton enjoyed a long and friendly phone conversation with McCain. Clinton was actually on better terms with McCain than she was with Obama. Clinton and McCain had downed shots together on Senate junkets; they regarded each other as grizzled veterans of the political wars and shared a certain disdain for Obama as flashy and callow.

I live in Tulsa, smack in the middle of the buckle that fasten the Bible belt. We were 49th highest in our support for McCain. The shame, the shame . . .

But on a happier note, I went to get coffee this morning so I could gather up some newspapers (treasuring those front pages with their 72 pt BARACK OBAMA WON!!! headlines) and they were all sold out.

Clerk told me that people had been coming in a steady stream buying armsful of papers, smiling and laughing and expressing great joy about this historic event.

I predict the future: 2012, Oklahoma goes purple. 2016, Oklahoma turns blue.

hehe...maybe when they saw that the whole world didn't end when O was declared the winner. They woke up this morning and life went on...except the world seemed brighter, fairer and more just, somehow.

Obama's victory is no more MLK's "dream" than the passage of the civil rights and voting rights acts.

I do like what Obama said about "this is not the change we seek..." So, in that sense, Obama himself would probably disagree.

This idea of casting Obama's incredible victory as the crowning achievement, the fulfillment of MLK's dream strikes me in the same way people talk about Jim Crow and reduce all that went on then to White and Black drinking fountains and bathrooms. It is soooooooo not the point, in and of itself.

Damn that's true. Its so sad that so many DO reduce Jim Crow to just the stuff on the surface. I've always hated that the media gets away with painting it that way.

The holograms that you saw on CNN last night?

A radio show mentioned that it takes 35 HD cameras at once to do that. I know some of us (me included) laughed at it, but it's kinda neat if you think about it.

That hologram would have meant more if they were talking to some in say, China, then someone in another room/down the street. Not very practical. Kinda cool = yes, but kinda of a waste b/c the journalistic intergity @ CNN still sucks!

I've been looking at the black turnout state-by-state. Just like with the primaries, some are reporting that in southern states black turnout was lower or only slightly higher than in 2004. Are we expected to believe that black folks were more motivated to vote for John Kerry than Barack Obama? There's an estimate floating around that 6 million voters came to the polls only to find there names missing from voter rolls. That's a hell of lot of people! And no doubt the largest percentages will be found in states with large black and Latino populations.

Just look at Missouri. I don't except that McCain won. If provisional ballots are counted, most of them from St. Louis, Obama will win the state.

Voter suppression should be priority number one for the next Attorney General.

Speaking of tossing under the bus, I picked up on some posts by gay/Lesbian African American who feel that black people deserted them in the Cali and Arkansas gay marriage and prohibition on gay couples to be foster or adoptive parents (better to send kids to abusive chain smoking rednecks or women like in Antawn Fisher I suppose). TD Jakes & Crew helped with that.

He toted water for Bush trying to get a slice of the Faith-Based Money Pie. To which I claim that any church taking handouts from the Government, ought to lose their tax-exempt status for violating the separation of Church and State.

Joe the Plumber was outvoted by Sydney the Cubicle Slave, and Sydney could care less about Guns n God. McCain was the man of 2000, not 08. Maybe just a little, and I mean a little. I do believe he's a man of integrity and compassion, but I also believe he's all too willing to compromise who he is to get what he wants, whether it's his personal or professional life.

One can't help but respect and admire a man that could endure 5 years as a prisoner of war (I coudn't endure 5 minutes in the back of a police car), but yet where was that compassion for his first wife? This woman suffered physically and emotional in silence while he endured captivity only to be told by him his suffering entitled him to a beauty queen with two good legs and seven figure bank account.

8 years ago he lost the South Carolina primary b/c Karl Rove and his protege Rick Schmidt one of the worse racist campaigns in modern history. Eight years later rather than telling Rick Schmidt to go to hell, McCain hired him. What message did that send to his daughter?

I have the same problem with him that I had with Hillary Clinton, their shared sense of entitlement. And he chose to turn his campaign into a traveling circus full of freaks.

McCain made his bed, now he must sleep in it. Being a leader doesn't mean you don't own up to you actions when it's too late. Screw that. McCain is not some dottering old fool who doesn't know what's going on. McCain knew and didn't take responsibility until he lost. Sorry, I can't muster up "sympathy". The buck stops with McCain. He isn't a leader and that's the bottom line. McCain let way too many things slide in order to win.

The Clintons, I look forward to them becoming irrelavent.. It's all about Obama now.

On a human level I feel sorry for McCain because he was just basically an actor in somebody else's play and he showed up and said his lines. He wasn't in control.

On a human level I somewhat feel sorry for Palin because she will be blamed for McCain's loss, when it was McCain's fault (as he noted last night).

On a political level, I don't feel sorry for any of them.

McCain had six months to study Obama while Obama and Hillary were duking it out and formulate a strategy to defeat him. Instead he took a page out of Hillary's playbook.

McCain had six months to properly vet VP candidates and see if they had the right chemistry with him and he didn't do it.

He didn't run his campaign on his own terms.

Sarah Palin, as someone (Stewart?) noted, is a grifter. She's a con artist and so is her whole family excluding baby Trig and maybe Piper. She swindled the Republicans out of all that money for the clothing, she swindled the state of Alaska out of money pursuing a vendetta against her ex brother in law, she's repeatedly undermined and backstabbed everyone who's ever helped her sorry behind.

That's why most women after the initial shock weren't taken in by her. We know shifty, dangerous women when we see them and we want no parts of them. We know.

As far as the Clintons are concerned, Bill can go sit down in the dustbin of history and stay there. I'm over him.

Sherri talks far too freely about past abortions and waking up beside various men - she violates her personal boundaries. She used to talk guiltily about her son coming to visit her in New York. Then recently she said that he was living with her now, and it was challenging. I think as a single mother of a special needs child, who works in New York, Sherri is having to make some tough choices that might leave her feeling guilty from a religious standpoint. That religious standpoint says you should be married and be a "good" mother(which usually means you stay home). I think she struggles between her human needs, and religious ideals.

As far as being a "slave-catcher" ....yeah, in a sense she is....as a woman, she is bound by religion, and not "free".
