I actually agreed with him when he was on Morning Joe this morning. He was trying to push back on Mika's "post-racial" bliss. He also spoke about the historical significance of Obama's win and how it is just the beginning. Nothing questionable.

I think Tavis really had an issue with sitting next to the Racial Arsonist in Chief (Pat Buchanan) and was just too down on the situation which made it look like it was both personal (ego-driven) and on the serious issue of real, substantive, structural change.

Tavis mission in life will cease to exist if we ever enter a "post-racial" society, so he's always going to fight against that. I want to know, why did anyone think we care what he thinks anymore?

Well, both Rhondacoca and I agreed with what he was saying and the fact that his statement, however problematic, was about issues and about "real change" vs. the symbolic... that's why what Tavis said matters.

I don't give a f-ck if everybody in the world but me sees that point. The fact is: folks criticizing Tavis for being petty are being petty in their reflexive criticisms of Tavis.

All Black people don't think a like (we all know that) and we've always had varying and often competing visions, even different goals. If all folks care about is having a Black president then, in one sense, it's an insult to the lives, memory and legacy of our ancestors. But maybe that's me... because my Freedom Dreams are bigger.

I appreciate where we are and how big this is but this isn't the Promise Land many envisioned. Maybe some, maybe even most did. Maybe this is all some could ever conceive of.

I was in Times Square last night. I brought my younger cousins and my sister and her boyfriend as well as a couple of my girlfriends. It was like New years eve! So exciting. Then I went to a private party. All of Harlem was in the streetsI have the worse hangover right now so I am trying to catch up with everyone on JJP!

President Bush's statement was, for once, excellent. Every now and then we're reminded that he actually comes from a classy, somewhat respectable, background. Unlike that PWT Caribou, who showed up to vote yesterday looking like she was on her way to Walmart.

I remember a while back you wrote another piece about what the direction you thought was needed by the RNC. I found it interesting and was not sure if they were willing to go that way. As it appears now, there seems to be a civil war about to happen in the RNC.

There seems to be the intellectual side ( a section I would place you at) a section where I might disagree with in some parts, but a totally reasonable side that one can debate with. Then there is the Rush Limbaugh / Sarah Palin / Religious Right side. I am curious to see what side wins out, and will they take this election to move to a more reasonable and moderate position.

A friend wrote a piece somewhere similar to a earlier piece you wrote and I am curious to know what do you think will happen next. His piece was:

I am interested in hearing what you think is the next step or direction they will take, or do you think a third party will emerge from this race soon, or in the near future.

For that, you have to look at the 2012 election, as the party not in power always makes gains in the midterm elections.

The GOP has gotta listen to people. That's where it all starts. We've been bashing people's heads in with a message of "compassionate conservatism" that has shown to be neither. The (stereo)typical conservative's problems aren't always the problems of all Americans. Once we've heard from the people, then we can present our beliefs as solutions. But, we have to practice them first, or else we're hypocrites.

I think that 2012 may be the extreme right's last stand. A McCain/Romney ticket might not have lost as badly as McCain/Palin, but she was needed to secure the far right. I suggested a while back that Palin and Dobson should run together, so we can just get them out of the way.

We have no grassroots, no strategy, and a presentation problem. If we can fix those issues, the GOP will survive. If not, I could see the Libertarians and more moderate conservatives breaking. Problem is, when Republicans/conservatives break, they're thrown bones to get them back in line (in the form of maintaining our present and future viability).

We have to learn to throw the bones back, and let the people carry us over.

I last thought because and this is all Monday morning quarterbacking. I seriously believe this election would of been tighter if McCain would of ran more of the McCain in 2000 than he did here. In fact his final speech was more like he was then, than how he had campaign up to that point. The only flaw I see with that, is I do not think the McCain of 2000 would have any chance in the Republican primary.

OMG! Y'all keep watching the senate race in Georgia! I knew they couldn't hide those early votes! They finally said that there will probably have to be a run-off between the incumbent Saxby Chambliss-R and Jim Martin-D.

Until an hour ago they were still tripping saying Chambliss was the projected winner even though they hadn't counted the early votes for just TWO counties - well those two counties are the largest two in the state and are overwhelmingly democratic!

Oh, one thing. I've been following this blog for awhile. As an African American Law Enforcement officer who fully endorses Obama. I was really pissed when that Florida Deputy said that Barack Hussien Obama would be in for a rude awakening on the 5th. Looks like the GOP's world just got rocked !!!!!!!!!! I just watched a segment of Morning Joe where he really showed it. Actually, he was okay and Mika was the one struggling... Both were trying to push this "post-racial" stuff. (And I caught John McWhorter on CNN doing the same in his usual smug manner.)

Oh but at the mention of Rohm Emmanuel being Obama's Chief of Staff... Joe couldn't let the hate go. Mark Halperin and Dark Sith (?) tried to talk him down and stress Emmanuel's centrist bonafides but Joe was stuck on hate and his ideological issue with him claiming Emmanuel is the Democratic version of Tom Delay and would be seen that way as Chief of Staff by Republicans.

But what really got them all was the realization that there are no Republican congresspersons in New England with the way the elections turned out from Maine to Connecticut, etc.

That was nothing but Tucker Carlson's GUILTY CONSCIENCE rearing its ugly head. Eugene Robinson was too disgusted with his ass, and rightly so. Regardless of who you voted for, you have to acknowledge the historical significance of this election.

Not voting for Obama doesn't necessarily mean that you're against black achievement, but acting like Tucker Carlson did this morning, saying that we should not be emotional, certainly does.

I am curious to see how the media is going to spin this. I would love to hear anyone's input on this as well. My question is, will the media acknowledge that this win by Obama gives him a mandate?

In 1960, Kennedy carried four fewer states than Nixon, won less than 50% of the popular vote, and many claimed he did not even win the popular vote (he won by about 113,000).

In 1976, Carter carried four fewer states than Ford, so many Repukes sneered at him for that as well.

In 1992 Clinton failed to win 50% of the vote due to Perot's independent run. Funny, the Repugs didn't have a problem with it when Nixon only got 43.4% of the vote in 1968 thanks to George Wallace.

In 1996 Clinton once again failed to win 50% - he got 49.24% - as again Perot entered the race. Sorry pal, no mandate.

In 2000, Bush lost the popular vote to Gore (and in my opinion the election) despite OBVIOUSLY not having a mandate, he governed as though he did and went on to completely ignore the rest of us.

In 2004, Bush won the popular vote, got more than 50%, and won 12 more states than Kerry. Though I believe he stole it again 120,000 votes going the other way in Ohio would of made Kerry the winner. Yet after that squeaker of an election the MSM and the right wing claimed Bush was given a mandate. I do not know where they got this, but it was the running story.

So I know want to see if after this convincing wing, after knocking off both Hillary and McCain, with a people driven campaign will they admit he has a mandate and allow him to govern that way? Fox News and those on the right are already talking about this country being a center right country, I could care less about that, but it is my assumption this is their call to try and stop anything Obama might try to get done from the handicapped harm they have done over the last 8 years. So how will this be spun?

So far it looks good for Obama.

Don't be afraid to say it. That is exactly what it was. Everything always fell into place for him. Granted, there was work involved, but this was meant for him. There is no other explanation. When it is yours, NO ONE can stop it or take it away from you!

As President-elect Obama was often required to say, his faith in the American people has been vindicated. But until now, what he couldn't say--and what many of us feel today--is that Black people's 400-year sacrificial expenditure of body, mind, and spirit has been redeemed.

As proud as I am of President-elect Obama, I'm equally proud of Black Americans' intellect, organization, sacrifice, and discipline in putting Obama where he is. This is a moment in history that we deserve. We can and certainly should share this wonderful gift with our fellow American family.

I'm exhausted, have the hangover from hell, the coffee hasn't kicked in yet, but it's a great day. I think I'm still in disbelief that America came through and did the right thing for once. I just keep thinking back to the moment when the election was called. We were whooping, hollering, high fiving each other. And then I thought about my Mom, and the tears came like Niagara Falls. You see, Mom was a political junkie (I talked yesterday about how she went into labor with me while watching the '64 returns) and she would have loved this election, and she would have been over the moon right now. Even more ironic, Inauguration Day will be on what would have been Mom's 70th birthday. But I know she's smiling wherever she is.

My God, My God! I still can't believe it. It's so surreal. I get chills of joy and pride every time I see or hear the words: President Barack Hussein Obama.

Just a few thoughts:

1. I am so glad Obama won this election and proud to witness such a historical moment. I couldn't stop grinning as I walked to work!

2. Now that he will be the next president, we have to be objective about his position. It will take him awhile (longer than one term i suspect) to clean up the sh*t from the last 8+ years. He WILL make mistakes along the way. As a people, we should hold him responsible for his actions and not give him a free pass based on his color. However, as people we need to support him in positive efforts to make changes, which brings me to my next point.

3. We have got to come together as people and as a nation. I observed this website for awhile and noticed that Republicans tend to get ripped up one side and down the other in blogs and comments. Alright, enough is enough. Put down the pitchforks and torches and stop picking on each other. We need to remember that this country is special because we are allowed to have different opinions. Remember, there are black Republicans who didn't want Obama in office and their are white Republicans who wanted him to be president. I personally don't care if a Democrat or Republican is in office. I just want someone to fix this mess that's been brewing for last two terms! Obama has a hard road ahead of him and he CAN'T do it by himself. Moses couldn't lead the Israelites unless they rallied behind him as one. Obama can't lead this nation if we don't rally behind him as one.

4. In accordance with the glass fence that encased Obama while he gave his speech last night, I think he should get his own pope mobile. :P Seriously though, I am praying that we don't have to relive the JFK tragedy...

You're right; we do have to come together as a country and put aside the partisanship. The most cynical part of me doesn't think it can happen-at least not immediately. I hope I'm wrong.

S, me, you, and other Republicans/conservatives have got to find our way again. Yes, we took a beating last night...and already, we've taken to bemoaning the "death of our nation." The Obama Administration-however long it lasts-won't be the death of America. But it sends a damn strong signal of what we have become...and how far we have to go to fix it.

To the Obama camp: again, congratulations.

And a warning-Republicans went to Washington and became the embodiment of everything that contradicts our beliefs and values. Don't make the same mistake. That is the one lesson you all can take from the GOP.

As I watched the results everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. It was not until President Elect Obama spoke that the reality hit me.

Even though I participated here, contributed to the campaign and encouraged others to do the same last night still blew me away. I am thrilled that we were all successful but there was a small part of me that was not sure we would be and that makes me a little sad.

I pray for Pres. Obama and his family and his administration for the road ahead will be a challenging one but I have every confidence that he will rise to the occasion.

I'm not going to say "I can't believe it," because I CAN believe it. This is a wonderful, wonderful moment.

Funny thing, now I'm thinking about all the stuff I put off because I was so caught up in this election. Have to send out those emails apologizing to my students, have to clean up my house, pay those overdue bills - LOL.

I don't think I'm ever going to take my Obama 08 bumper sticker off my car. Well, not until 2012 (when I put up his re-elect one). But I'm so glad I've already put in my order for these stickers - "O: Our President" - everybody needs to get one. rikyrah: I am EXHAUSTED -Up since 5:30am on Tuesday. Annnnnnd still awake! Will probably "crash" - BIG TIME on WED. :>) :>)

BUT, I have ta bring you some of the "SIGHTS and SOUNDS" from my "poll working" experience.

1. One of my responsibilities was to give the "I VOTED" stickers to ALL. Most of the time, I handed it to them, BUT, some people said, "You can put it on!" So I accommodated - UNTIL - this one old "non-melanin" man asked me to put it on him and then said - "PRESS HARDER!" I, professionally, took him aside and said - "Ya need to slow your roll "OLD DUDE!" This is NOT a massage parlor!! I told him that I could report him for some kind of "harassment!" He got scurred and apologized! WT freak? :>)

2. A tender moment: A young "AA husband/wife" took a picture with their baby son after they voted. I believe that this was the FIRST Time that they voted! It was nice! :>)

3. I was working the table "M - Z". And I saw and heard this Hispanic male [kinda 40-ish] riled up! He Then looked down the line of people at me and said - very loudly - "Is the the Barack Obama line??" "I ain't votin' for no John McCain!"

The majority of the voters were white and they had the strangest looks on their faces. I "professionally" smiled [BUT CRACKED UP INSIDE] and said that you could vote for your candidate at in any booth! :>) :>) LAWD HA"MERCY!! IT WAS FUNNY!!! :>)

3. This made me CRY. I had ta "step outside." One voter was a "somewhat mentally-challenged" 30-ish AA male. This was his first time voting. He sought me out and asked if I could help him with his voting since he didn't know how to do it. YES I helped him! And after he turned in his ballot with a BIG SMILE, his came back to me and said "THANK YOU!" I held myself together long ENOUGH to be able to get out of that room to get my "CRY ON!"

THAT was a "special moment!"

4. Then there was the matter of the "SUPERVISOR" with "IMPULSIVITY ISSUES!" I knew the procedures used to search for the name of a voter. So, did she have to ask me IFFFF I checked BOTH LISTS!! I turned to her and in my best JJP form, I said - TRUST!! She just looked at me like a deer in headlights! Funny moment! :>)

5. Had ta use my "bi-lingual skills" when speaking to some of my poll-worker buddies. One of them asked me where the "resource book" was. I said, "I don't know. Maybe you could ask Carol. She can "HOOK YOU UP!" Wellllll, after her quizzical look - I went "bi-lingual" on her and said, "Maybe she CAN HELP YOU!" then she said. Oh. O.K. I'll ask her. :>) :>) LAWD HE'P!! **shakin' my head** :>) :>)

She even let slip her own ambitions last week, saying in a TV interview that she’s ‘not doing all this for naught'.

Several top producers are vying to see if she can turn her popularity among the country’s conservatives into TV ratings.
Now Joe Biden will be filling the vacant VP job in Washington, network executives are sharpening their pitches to try and persuade her to capitalise on her new found celebrity.
Her self-mocking appearance on Saturday Night Live, with lookalike star Tina Fey and actor Alec Baldwin, only heightened Palin fever in Hollywood.
‘Any television person who sees the numbers when she appears on anything would say Sarah Palin would be great,’ said veteran morning-show producer Steve Friedman.
‘The passion she has on each side, love and hate, makes television people say, "Wow, imagine the viewership".‘
According to the Hollywood Reporter, most industry insiders believe an Oprah Winfrey-style daytime talk show will be the probable route for the 44-year-old.
They think her folksy, straight-shooting personality would be an immediate hit with the predominantly female audience.
'I see her less a variety show host like Ellen De Generes and more of a single-topic host like Tyra Banks,’ said one top TV producer.
Cable news is another possibility and perhaps easier to fit in with her day job. Mike Huckerbee, who lost out to John McCain in the Republican primaries, has just begun his own weekly show on Fox News.
One producer has even floated the idea - only half-jokingly - of taking advantage of the curiosity surrounding the entire Palin clan and their Alaska setting and packaging a reality show called ‘The Palins’ as a mixture of The Osbournes and Northern Exposure.

The day John McCain picked her to be his VP is the day he lost the election.

Sarah Palin does not know her role.

People complained about Joe Biden and his gaffes and Biden in general but Biden knew his role and stayed in his place.

Biden knew he was #2, not #1.

Sarah Palin thought she was #1, and John McCain's efforts to smack her back down to #2 and cleaning up after her wasted a lot of time.

I don't see a future in national politics for her. She cannot be trusted. If she wants to be #1, she needs to stay her ass right in Alaska.

Election Night Open Thread - YES WE DID!!

What an incredible day. It’s still sinking in that we have a President Elect Obama. I just returned from Election Central in downtown Anchorage. Many candidates were there, and everyone was feeling very festive. The Barack Obama campaign people came in with huge signs and the place went wild with chants of Yes We Can! It was electric.

I will tell you all about the evening tomorrow, Mudflatters… I am so overwhelmed by this historic night that words aren’t coming.

I will continue to do what I have been doing here, although work, family, and my disaster of a house will need to take some of my time. I was blogging before Sarah Palin’s unlikely rise to the national stage, and hopefully will be doing this after her time is up. I’m not worried that Alaska will run out of muck any time soon.

Snoskred here. AKMuckraker is stuck on a new laptop unable to log in, but dropped by the chat to let me know you needed a new open thread. Here tis! Enjoy.

Oh, and as a non-American, may I be one of the first to congratulate you on the election of Barack Obama. Everyone I know here in Australia is so thrilled for you. *I* am thrilled for you.

Now, fingers crossed that Alaska turns blue. Sephyroth tells me it cannot happen, but I have faith, and I believe.. yes we can! ;)

3. I VOTED!

filled in Mark Begich, then Ethan Berkowitz, then my local race. I saved Obama-Biden for last. I took a deep breath and really thought about what it took to get to this day, not only all the incredible work that has gone into this particular election, but also to have a viable African-American candidate on the ballot as nominee for the President of the United States.

I hope to see a woman in that spot too, some day. But I want to vote for a woman who has earned her place on the ticket through her own intelligence, principles, work ethic, determination and grit, not someone who got picked as a strategic calculation, and a poor one at that. I looked at Palin’s name on the ballot. After my deep breath, I filled in the Obama-Biden oval carefully…being sure not to leave one little white space. Then I double checked to make sure I filled in the right oval, and didn’t make a horrible mistake because of my reverie.

4. LET THE GAMES BEGIN: ELECTION DAY IN ALASKA!

The day started early. I left the house at 6:00am, took the long drive up to Wasilla, just because I had to wave a sign at Sarh Palin as she drove by. We never caught up with the sign waving crowd, but we did see the Governor’s entourage flanked by Alaska State Trooper cars in front and back, with 12 or 15 SUVs and other vehicles in between. The sun wasn’t up yet, and it was freezing cold. I doubt she saw me with my Alaskans for Obama sign on the side of the road, but I can say I was there. I followed the motorcade on the way back into town, but never caught up. They were in a hurry.

Back in Anchorage, there were lots of people out smiling and waving signs at major intersections - Obama, Begich, and Berkowitz supporters were out en masse. There were a few Don Young people, even fewer McCain Palin people, and nobody for Ted Stevens on this first pass through town today.

Next stop - voting! I’ve got my video camera, and I’m ready to video my vote.

I read another diary during early voting where it seemed the AA male vote was significantly lower than the AA female vote by about 200,000(if memory serves).

They think some of the early votes have not been counted yet... Maybe Georgia's a win after all. :-)

I was an election official this year.I worked 16 hours at the voting poll.I saw so many people waiting for hours to vote.I saw young old every race creed and color out their.I tell you just peeping over the shoulders of some people and you would be surprised at how people voted.In my precinct there was 1210 for Mccain and 840 for Obama this in the mostly White military area.I knew Obama had Virginia after we read those results.The Obama family is too cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
