...this tragedy is the symptom of our much deeper problem. unless they were giving away free groceries, no need for panic. not even then if there was more than a grain of rice in the cupboard at home - that's what nearly 2/3 of the world would kill for, kill being mostly figurative even for them.

This is despicable beyond words. A man screams for help as he's being trampled to death, and "people" simply step over him to buy garbage? Consumerism is a cancer. Avarice is a plague. And this country is terminally infected with both.

Rest peacefully, Mr. Damour - my heart and thoughts go out to you and your family.

No, I doubt you would prefer to live in the Third World. Have you ever been to the dentist office in a poor desolate country? Of course Cuba has a higher infant mortality rate than they claim but I believe there are a lot of good things going for this country.

Before you rant on about other's ranting... get your facts straight. Those cars are also made in North America, provide many well-paying jobs to many "un-decorated" citizens of Canada and US. Letters behind a name do not make for a better person, however, the motivation to acquire those letters can be enough for even the poorest to do so. The facts are that, in the days prior to the Wal-Mart empire, people took pride in their shops, the middle class was born from merchants selling goods on a smaller scale and the American way of life was born. Now, Wal-Mart has left millions of merchants un-employed because of their ability to buy at large scale and secure lower pricing for goods. What is better? Saving 20 cents on a loaf of bread? or losing ten locally owned shops where the merchants made good wages and now are forced to work in the mens clothing section for 8 dollars an hour?

This situation is just sad. As much as I want to say "I can't believe it", I can believe it. This reminds me that there is definetely a secular Christmas and the religious observance of Christmas. Saving $20 dollars on stuff is not worth the crowds, the pushing, the rudeness, and most importantly a man's life. I pray that Mr. Damour's family can find peace in time.

Walmart (NYSE WMT) and Walgreens (NYSE WAG) are not the same corporation. They were just both started by two gentlement whose last names were Sam Walton (Walmart) and Charles Walgreen. Walgreens is based in Deerfield, IL. :)

I tried not to shop at Walmart before and made it for 4 months. I loathe how their business practices, but like many others, I'm trying to hold on to as much as my earnings as possible.

This is really horrifying. It shows that even in the middle of a depression, Americans can be brought to a homicidal frenzy by the idea of having just one more consumer item.

Many people call the United States the "First World", but we have to question the measures and criteria by which we come to that conclusion. We are first in guns. That's good. We are first or second in gun deaths. That's also good, right?

We are first in using up the world's petroleum, and we are first in spending money on our military to make sure that the petroluem keeps flowing at prices and levels that couldn't be sustained without constant use of force.

As Rorysmamma says, "We love things more than we love people", otherwise we would see that our infant mortality rate of 17.7% among Blacks in the South was far too high compared to the infant mortality rate of 7% just ninety miles away in Cuba. So, why don't we fix our broken health system. Because a few people are afraid of losing some of their money streams that come from the broken system.

I prefer to live in the third world. At least I can afford to visit the dentist.

Wow. OK.

I can't speak for everyone nor do I choose to. But, I do know people who work at large retail stores and I worked at Target (where my typical work day consisted of a 10 hr. shift) before leaving to go into Community Organizing. Maybe you can see where this is going. . .

Having had the experience of working with people who work there out of utter necessity and not by choice, I undoubtedly sympathize with the plight of those employees. When I replied earlier, I did not attempt to speak to the evils of Walmart as if pointing a finger from my pedestal. From my perspective, it's the absolute other way around. The "evils" of Walmart come from the powers that be (i.e. Corporate) who chose to pay borderline slave wages to employees who have given their life to the company that sets corporate policies against unionization for fair wages, benefits, and general policies.

As much of a profit as Walmart, Target, Costco, etc have continued to make in the midst of recession, they can afford to provide adequate security to ensure the safety of their employees and pay better wages to those in need (i.e. all of their employees and not just the managers and executives). It is definitely a means of work. Many of the people that I worked with had been there at that same store since I was in grade school. And I think that corporation such as Walmart take advantage of the fact that a lot of the times, employees have nowhere else to go.

It is a complete and utter tragedy what happened to the gentleman who lost his life while trying to make a living in a position that would normally never call for such risk. It is a tragedy that customers were injured and injured others with such wanton disregard by others. It is a tragedy that something could not have been done and something could not have been foreseen to prevent this from happening in the first place.

I agree that there is a walk that must come with that talk. So as someone involved in Organizing with a connection to the problems that we attempt to solve, I know that what I'm doing is not as simple a "endless bitching".
