TUESDAY OPEN THREAD #2 IS UP

I am feeling everything you have said. I am so nervous and anxious that I can hardly work or breath. I have to pray that I can make it through this work day with out screaming "THANK YOU JESUS."

This morning, there was a caller to The Lionel Show who talked about his voting experience this morning, but he mostly called to tell a story about his appreciation for the Air America network. The caller mentioned that he had been a listener since the network signed on for the first time in March 2004, enjoying various shows, and remembering their election night coverage that November.

He specifically remembered the optimism that one of the hosts (still with Air America) had that night, and how that optimism gradually devolved into sadness and frustration. Later election returns came in for the state of Ohio, which we now know was stolen from John Kerry. And the particular host the caller referred to knew it. Paraphrasing: "I know first hand of her disappointment watching them steal Ohio, she's my daughter and she wouldn't let it go for a long time."

The caller was Rachel Maddow's dad. If we were still wondering what had been eating at her the last few days and causing her optimism for today to be decidedly measured, perhaps we know now.

Voted this morning around 7:30ish (central time) at the county's National Guard Armory. The place was busy, but not quite full. There was a line, but only because there were a lot of people like me whose last name began with a certain letter (three tables set up that way to get more folks signed in).

I filled in my broken arrows for Democrats, including one for the Obama-Biden ticket and Vivian Davis Figures (U.S. Senate race for Alabama). My voting trip took just under twenty minutes.

Just voted with no problems. It took about 15 minutes.

I was getting the baby in her carseat this morning when a teen walked by. Now 99% of the time the white people in my neighborhood act like we are invisible so after 6 years I've gotten used to it. Imagine my surprise when I am greeted with "I hope you are going to vote for Obama! All those long lines are so inspirational! Obama Rocks!!!"

Within 30 minutes of getting back home, the doorbell rings. Obama canvassers just doing some last minute work! What a day and it's still early...

I voted in Vermont at 7 this morning. Longest lines I've ever seen at my polling place, but still it only took 20 minutes. Paper ballots, as usual. Strange thing, though. Lots of signs for local elections just outside the door but not a single Obama or McCain sign. I guess everyone knows it's in the bag for Obama here. And everyone who has walked into my shop this morning has already voted, either today or early vote. Yay.

I voted!!!!! But it was not without a little drama.

I live in California in a largely white town. There were about 100 people in line with me this morning and I was the only black person. I went up to the guy who checks your info and presented my voter card and ID card. He tells me he can't find my name on the list. I said well it should be there. He asked if I registered on time and I said yes my registration info is on the card right in front of you. So he said well I don't have your name so you have to fill out a provisional ballot and I said no I'm filling out a real ballot so you figure it out. We stare at each other because we are at an obvious impasse. So other people come over to see what the problem is and the guy says I'm not on the list. Then he looks again and ta-dah, I was there. He said the list wasn't in alphabetical order (it was). Anyway, I voted and the old guy manning the table was rotated out of his position.

I'm so glad you held your ground. I live in a similar neighborhood. My husband and two sons were out at 6:30 a.m. and were met with a huge tent and tons of McCain/Palin signs right outside the door of the voting area here in PA. Seems like that shouldn't be allowed. They had five manned tables under the tent filled with 'helpful' volunteers. I guess we had about 200 people in line when the doors opened at 7 a.m.

Hi all! I just voted here in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. My voting precinct is located in a church. I was the only Black person there. I stood inside for 10 minutes and cast my vote. I was out in 1/2 hour. I took my camera to take pictues but was told I couldn't take any photos inside the polling area. So I took a picture a a banner outside the hall that read "GIVE THANKS, GIVE WITH A JOYFUL HEART."

its a great day in harlem! i could barely sleep last night i voted early this morning. the best part: i saw an elderly woman (late 70s, early 80s)leaving the polls as a waited in very shline. a reporter asked her for her thoughts and she said she remembered the time when she could not vote.

Is Redskins’ Game an Omen for McCain?

LANDOVER, Md. – Forget the polls, forget the pundits. The election predictor that really matters is in and it points to victory for Barack Obama.

The only thing Washington cares about as much as its politics is its football team, the Washington Redskins, and so it should come as no surprise that the fortunes of the capital’s gridiron greats closely track those of its political stars.

In 16 of the 17 presidential elections since the Redskins moved to Washington in 1937, the incumbent party has kept the White House if the team won its last home game before the election while the out-of-power party has taken over if the Redskins lost. (The only exception came four years ago, when the Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers but President Bush won reelection.)


So how did the Redskins do in its Monday Night Football appearance at FedEx Field here in Landover on Election Eve this year? Crushed, ignominiously, 23-6. And in another bad omen for John McCain, the authors of the team’s undoing were the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team from the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where Mr. McCain has placed so much of his hope for victory in these waning days.

The Redskins, at least, still have playoff hopes with a 6-3 record.

Oh, and don't think we didn't notice that the Steelers' head coach and the quarterback who won last night's game are both ...

Even Skip Bayless, the number one hater in sports, pointed that out on ESPN's First Take this morning.

(The only exception came four years ago, when the Redskins lost to the Green Bay Packers but President Bush won reelection.)

I've always thought that technically the streak held up in 2004, considering what went down with the Ohio ballots. JMHO.

I voted this morning in Newark, New Jersey and for the first time ever I had to stand in line! I took a few pictures and I am headed out now to see if I can get more pictures in Newark and NYC. This morning I woke up to helicopters flying overhead in my neigborhood as the media waited for the Obama family to show up at their neighborhood voting precint.

I feel like I am about to bust! So many emotions. The waterworks have already begun.
I wish I had the foresight to take off today.

Unfortunately, I will be in a meeting most of the day. I hope I can keep it together. I already have my Obama T-shirt ironed for tonight.

Voted in Philly this morning. The polls opened @ 7am in PA, I arrived at the polls around 6:40...there were already about 35 ppl in front of me. It took approximately 40 mins to get to that booth.

After a huge sigh of relief I voted for Barack Obama for President of the United States of America. I was so tempted to take a picture of that ballot, but I just stared at it for about a moment....Whoa.

Oh and I particpated in TWO exit polls....cool! LOL

I am so considering that as an omen for today.

I was in line next to a young black man who was so excited. He was with another female who I overheard asking him if he was going to call everyone he knew. It was so cute!

I took pics of a cute young family, where Dad was trying to head off to work, the little older princess started crying, but we got the pic!

I voted! I wore an Obama tee under a red jacket with a blue and white scarf. I took pictures of the lines, my ballot, me beside the vote here signs. pics of folks taking their kids to the polls, families, it was lovely.

I hardly got any sleep last night!

I voted !!!!!! and I just got to work. I realized last night that I had to vote in Chappaqua not Brooklyn. I woke up and headed out at a little before 5am to get to my polling station. What a morning!

My cousin turned 18 yesterday so he barely made it. This is his first election!!

Every single person I know in Atlanta and the surrounding metro area ALREADY VOTED. We are ON IT. I went by my normal polling place and the line is out the door and circling the building....the next polling place down the street has a line stretching down the block as well.

I'm watching Obama vote with Michelle andthe girls. I'm tearing up. This is going to be an emotional day. 80 minutes till my polling place opens. I can't wait to place my vote for history!

I just saw it - I'm at work and I was downstairs in this deli shop getting something to eat earlier. They have a flat screen on FoxNews all day (argh!) - but they were showing the Obama's voting and there was a crowd of about 20 people just standing there watching and smiling. Very cool.

We need to encourage, email, call and text everyone to get out and vote if they want to see a President Obama, because just as there are people motivated to vote for Obama, there's an equal segment JUST AS MOTIVATED to keep Obama and any other black person out. I live in a red, RED, RED, district where I can look out my bedroom window and be treated to the sight of a Confederate flag, and the line is out the door and around the corner. This district has NO CHANCE of ever being close for Obama but these people are determined to keep him out. So lets get everyone out to the polls. It's raining here in VA -- don't worry about messing up your hair on account of standing in the rain because if McCain-Palin get in there you won't have any money to get your hair done, that is if you have any hair on your head at all from Bush deregulating everything.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes, it's so sweet of all of you. It's been a crazy emotional ride so far. I was at the polls when they opened at 6 a.m. (and there was already 200 people in line, do you believe that?), and cast my vote. I wasn't emotional at all until after I left and it has been slowly sinking in ever since. I don't know if I feel like grinning or crying at any given moment.

Yes, Obama's victory would be an awesome birthday present and would run a close second to my best birthday ever (sorry, nothing's ever going to top celebrating my 40th in Paris LOL).

I was an election day baby in 76..... so from one election baby to another.... Happy birthday and may we get the best gift ever...........

Election day baby indeed LOL. My mom (RIP) used to tell me about how she went into labor with me right in the middle of watching the LBJ-Goldwater election returns, and found out about the results in the delivery room. She was such a political junkie and would have absolutely enjoyed this election.

PAID GOP Workers Say They Misled Wisconsin Voters

Four employees hired by a temporary staffing agency to encourage absentee voting for Sen. John McCain in Wisconsin say they were instructed to tell people they were Republican volunteers.

The employees told The Associated Press in interviews on Monday they were hired by Allstaff Labor Group to go door-to-door in the Milwaukee suburbs locating McCain supporters and distributing absentee ballot request forms.

Allstaff recruited the workers under a contract with a consulting firm hired by the Republican Party of Wisconsin to run its absentee ballot program.

The workers claim they were told to say they were GOP volunteers even though they were getting paid $10 an hour for the work. They were required to sign agreements stating they would not speak publicly about their work with anyone including reporters, but they decided to speak out because they were angry they had not been paid for their final few days.

"I told the Republican Party and Allstaff, I wanted to know why we were lying to these residents," said Loyalty Dixon, 26, a Milwaukee resident who worked about two weeks in Waukesha. "I said, isn't that fraudulent? They didn't give me a good explanation. They said, you guys know you're getting paid. Don't worry about it."

ABC News' Tahman Bradley, Rigel Anderson and Arnab Datta Report:

While Sen. Barack Obama's late grandmother Madelyn Dunham will not live to see the outcome of this historic election, her 2008 vote will count.

Hawaii Chief Elections Officer Kevin Cronin told ABC News this evening that the absentee ballot cast by Dunham before she passed away will count. Cronin said Dunham's absentee ballot was received on October 27 and found to meet the requirements of a valid absentee ballot and will therefore be counted with the rest of the state's ballots tomorrow.

Obama learned that his grandmother lost her battle with cancer early Monday. She was 86.

No adequate words to describe the feeling.

Well, here's a really interesting online essay IMO. The intro paragraph -- quoted below and bolded by me -- is one of the most accurate descriptions of the real "language" of the McCain-Palin campaign that I have seen.

The reason why the McCain-Palin campaign has appeared erratic throughout the election season is that their strategic communications have been conceived and crafted according to the language of implicit cultural code rather than explicit thematic cohesion. On the surface, their messages appear scattershot, misaligned, contradictory and confusing; but that's because these messages are designed to appeal not to crisp logical consistency, but rather to murky socio-cultural undercurrents and subterranean sentiments which have fueled, informed, and warped white identity politics since the birth of this nation.

What's extraordinary is that this time around — at this particular crossroads, against this particular candidate — it's not working.

The beauty of US history is that years, decades, centuries of persistent popular struggle have resulted in dramatic social, political, and cultural changes in the continuing quest for greater common good. The ugliness of US history is that at every step, reactionaries have undertaken — and many others have tolerated — all manner of inner and outer violence in a greed- and fear-based desire to impose and maintain exclusionary power schemes. I view the 2008 presidential election as some sort of forward step along this trajectory. I hesitate to either overstate or understate the historical significance of what we're witnessing. We're way too close to the moment's clamor to know just what it means in a larger scope.

The Palin’ Identity

Well that's why they pressed "Joe the Plumber" so hard.

And why Palin said "He doesn't see America like YOU AND I see America."

And why Mark Penn said "Let's portray him as the other, all that multicultural crap can be saved for another day." And Hillary was ambivalent at first about going down that road but did it anyway to win. {I believe to this day Hillary was ambivalent and uncomfortable about casting Obama as the evil Muslim black guy out to get whitey while everyone else on her campaign was not, and this discord is why her campaign was in disarray.}

As people mix with other cultures and groups, the bogeyman sting lessens and lessens. It's hard to see Obama as the black bogeyman out to getcha if you work with a black nerd just like him (Obama is a nerd, IMO).

this is a great essay, and I agree with a whole lot of it. After all, the GOP has spent 40 years running agains the Black Bogeyman. They are stunned that not only has the Black Bogeyman not worked, but neither has the Muslim Bogeyman.

It is a great essay and it aptly describes the lowliness and evil campaign of the republicans.

Part of what this election means to me is that the "southern stragey" will die. I will no longer be made an object of someone's else hate (unbelievable) in order to advance a political campaign and maintain a evil way of life.

Larry King is iffy. While the terrific Bev Smith is on, Sambo Larry Elder and the scary Bay Buchanan are also on.
