Obama’s picked Cecilia Muñoz from the National Council of La Raza to be Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.

For those of you not familiar with Cecilia’s work on immigration, you can catch her story in chapter 3 of Rinku Sen’s new book The Accidental American.

In a nation where the current unemployment rate is 6.5 percent, I'm thankful to be gainfully employed. In a culture that uses material wealth as a measure for happiness, I'm thankful that God has taught me that joy and peace endures no matter the circumstance. In a society where family violence has become the norm, I'm thankful for my close-knit family. In a nation that has limited the life chances of people because of the color of their skin, I'm thankful that America decided to vvote their class interest and elect a Black man as President of the United States.

Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

I'm thankful to the Almighty G for life and freedom...thankful for my family and friends...thankful for blessing us with a new leader in this country...thankful for optimism.

Even as violence rages in different corners of the globe, I am optimistic about the future.

I am reminded of when I visited Paris and happened upon FDR Boulevard (it's a major thoroughfare in the city) named in honor of the man credited with liberating France from the Nazis.

So even today as Mumbai is racked with islamic terrorism, I feel that someday there will be streets in Mumbai, Baghdad, Tehran and Jerusalem named after Barack Hussein Obama. I feel it way down deep in my soul.

While our nation is faced with tough economic times, President-elect Obama recognizes the value of service in rebuilding struggling communities across the country.

This Thanksgiving, President-elect Obama has asked the nation to celebrate this distinctly American tradition while looking forward to the future we share with hope and promise.

Remarks of President-elect Barack Obama

Good morning.

Nearly 150 years ago, in one of the darkest years of our nation's history, President Abraham Lincoln set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving. America was split by Civil War. But Lincoln said in his first Thanksgiving decree that difficult times made it even more appropriate for our blessings to be -- and I quote -- "gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people."

This week, the American people came together with family and friends to carry on this distinctly American tradition. We gave thanks for loved ones and for our lasting pride in our communities and our country. We took comfort in good memories while looking forward to the promise of change.

But this Thanksgiving also takes place at a time of great trial for our people.

Across the country, there were empty seats at the table, as brave Americans continue to serve in harm’s way from the mountains of Afghanistan to the deserts of Iraq. We honor and give thanks for their sacrifice, and stand by the families who endure their absence with such dignity and resolve.

At home, we face an economic crisis of historic proportions. More and more Americans are worried about losing a job or making their mortgage payment. Workers are wondering if next month's paycheck will pay next month's bills. Retirees are watching their savings disappear, and students are struggling with the cost of tuition.

It's going to take bold and immediate action to confront this crisis. That's why I'm committed to forging a new beginning from the moment I take office as President of the United States. Earlier this week, I announced my economic team. This talented and dedicated group is already hard at work crafting an Economic Recovery Plan that will create or save 2.5 million new jobs, while making the investments we need to fuel long-term economic growth and stability.

But this Thanksgiving, we are reminded that the renewal of our economy won't come from policies and plans alone -- it will take the hard work, innovation, service, and strength of the American people.

I have seen this strength firsthand over many months -- in workers who are ready to power new industries, and farmers and scientists who can tap new sources of energy; in teachers who stay late after school, and parents who put in that extra hour reading to their kids; in young Americans enlisting in a time of war, seniors who volunteer their time, and service programs that bring hope to the hopeless.

It is a testament to our national character that so many Americans took time out this Thanksgiving to help feed the hungry and care for the needy. On Wednesday, I visited a food bank at Saint Columbanus Parish in Chicago. There -- as in so many communities across America -- folks pitched in time and resources to give a lift to their neighbors in need. It is this spirit that binds us together as one American family -- the belief that we rise and fall as one people; that we want that American Dream not just for ourselves, but for each other.

That's the spirit we must summon as we make a new beginning for our nation. Times are tough. There are difficult months ahead. But we can renew our nation the same way that we have in the many years since Lincoln's first Thanksgiving: by coming together to overcome adversity; by reaching for -- and working for -- new horizons of opportunity for all Americans.

So this weekend -- with one heart, and one voice, the American people can give thanks that a new and brighter day is yet to come.

This evening, President-elect Obama called Secretary of State Rice to get an update and status report on the situation in Mumbai. President-elect Obama then called Indian Ambassador Sen and conveyed that his thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic situation. He said that there is just one president at a time. He also told him that he is monitoring the situation and has been in communication with Secretary Rice.

This person has been in Club Fed for 7 years, half of his sentence, so they were probably going to release him soon anyway. I REALLY don't abide folks who deal death to the community. I don't care if they are "stars" or not. He could make money with his musical opportunities...there are so many talented people out there praying for the chance to be discovered (and who aren't smuggling or distributing cocaine). I do not pardon him. I whip him with a belt.

Bush might need a hook up after Jan. 20.

I seriously doubt it. I'm sure he has secret service & military connections to handle all that. He can have ambassadors send him the real, uncut stuff in a diplomatic pouch. What could his reason be for doing this? He hates pardoning people. Its very mysterious.

Gwen Ifill is the only truly qualified candidate so no matter what they say its MORE than a historic choice. Its the RATIONAL one. Todd and Abrams are new jacks that aren't that special or qualified. Andrea Mitchell was close friends with Russert, but aside from that she is FAR from a hard hitting journalist. I will give her points for getting credit for the Hillary as Sec of State story.

Gwen Ifill is the only REAL candidate.

I agree with you 100% - I really like Chuck Todd, but his interviewing skills aren't great. Ifill is definitely the best candidate. I suspect that they'll try to do something where they rotate hosts...

I am thankful for my family and all the wonderful friends I've met. I am thankful for the life I've created out of a chaotic and crazy childhood. Most of all, I thank God for all my blessings.

I posted this in an old thread so I'm posting it again here.

Happy Thanksgiving and group hug. I'm thankful that my children will call a moratorium on arguing today. I'm thankful they will do their community service without complaint. I'm thankful for a new president & for JJP.

I think peple have always known that W is a dullard. Peopel have probably made fun of him his whole life. Here is one of my favorite, old W jokes which I'm sure you've heard:

W attended a comedy show put on by a ventriliquist. The jokes made constant references to how the dummy was so much smarter than W and how he would be a better president than W is. After the show, W confronted the ventriliquist. He said, "I really don't appreciate all those shots you took at me. Being president is a hard job and everyone makes mistakes." The ventriliquist felt guilty and began to apologize when W interrupted him with, "I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to that that little smart alek who was sitting on your lap." (duh-dunt-dunt)

I am thankful for my wonderful husband, my precocious children, and another day on this earth.

Thankful for the things I stupidly or arrogantly ignore, forget, take for granted...the true good things and the people who were always supportive.

I'm thankful that I can provide my daughter with the healthy, happy home that I always wished for myself as a little girl. I'm thankful for another year to get myself together (LOL) and shed all those pounds I gained when I was pregnant. I'm thankful for this amazing, amazing time we live in with a leader like Barack Obama heading to the White House. I never thought I would ever feel as invested in this country's success as I do today!

And I'm thankful for JJP and all the regular commenters for making each day a little brighter.

I'm thankful that my sister from out of state and her children are here, and that we're all together as a family. I didn't realize how important that would be for me, but it is now.
