Chris Matthews appeared on "Morning Joe" Thursday morning, and in the context of discussing the Obama transition — and Rahm Emanuel's motives for waffling on the chief of staff position — told Joe Scarborough it is not his job to question Emanuel's motives.
"You know what?" Matthews said. "I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new Presidency work."
Scarborough and co-host Mika Brzezinski pressed Matthews on his claim, asking if it his his job as a journalist to make the Presidency work.
"Yeah, that's my job. My job is to help this country...to make this work succsesfully, because this country needs a successful Presidency, more than anything right now," Matthews said.
After suggesting that Barack Obama had anti-American views in an exchange three weeks ago with MSNBC host Chris Matthews, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) told Politico Thursday that she was “extremely grateful that we have an African-American who has won this year.” She called his victory“a tremendous signal we sent.”
“I have not seen the United States as a racist nation,” said Bachmann, who represents Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District, in the east-central part of the state. “In my district, I don’t sense racism, and that’s why I’m thankful that hopefully this will send a national signal across our country that America is not a nation made up of racists. ... On the same hand, I hope that the national media will not confuse disagreement with Obama’s policy positions with being consumed [by] racism.”
Shut up Bachmann your comment is stupid. America still has an issue with race and it has not changed. You wont detect it because you are white, arrogant and racist yourself.
freespiritbty
Buck Fachmann. She's crazier than an outhouse rat. She's in the Palin/Hasselbeck school of thought.
MsKitty
I always thought Bachmann was batshit crazy. This latest statement does little to change that perception.
7-year-old Sasha Obama has been in the spotlight more than half her short life, with an AP photographer first snapping the toddler in March of 2004. Through years of campaigning with dad for Senate and then President, her personality has shone through. Sasha calling, "Hi Daddy!" to her father via satellite at the DNC was almost as memorable as his speech the following night. She'll be the youngest resident of the White House since JFK's kids.

I'm a huge Sasha Obama fan. I love her little mischievous look. She always appears to be on the verge of a South Side of Chicago style spanking.

JJP, as at least one of the comments in this open thread mentioned, the new website is up: change.gov.
I wonder if some people at JJP would be interested this page (as well as all the other info) and if it would be interesting enough to you and enough readers that it would be worth a front page info post here with a thread where people could post what they wrote in?
Start right now. Share your vision for what America can be, where President-Elect Obama should lead this country. Where should we start together?
MsKitty
Just got this warning from my office's IT Department:
Malware Campaign Uses Obama's Name
The polls have been closed for less than 24 hours, and already hackers are launching a new malware campaign. Using the president-elect's name to draw people in, the e-mail messages contain subject lines such as "Obama win preferred in world poll" and claims to be from news@president.com. After the message is opened, there is a link that purports to take the user to news about the new president. Once the link is clicked, the user is prompted to download Adobe Flash 9 to view a video of Obama president making a speech. If the bogus Adobe Flash player is downloaded, a malicious Trojan horse infects the computer. SophosLabs identified this malware as Mal/Behav-027, and it has accounted recently for nearly 60 percent of malicious spam. Owners with infected computers will find that their data has been compromised, and they could potentially even have their identity stolen. Sophos experts said the malicious Trojan horse incorporates the following characteristics:
• The malware contains rootkit technology to conceal itself. • It's designed to steal information from an infected computer. • It also has general "backdoor" functionality. • It spies on user's keyboard and mouse inputs and can take screenshots. • It looks for passwords. • It submits the information it discovers to a Web server located in Kiev, Ukraine.
Users of anti-virus products should check to see if updates have been made to protect against this new malware.

Gloria Steinem really annoyed me yesterday. She was on Oprah acting as if she was A-OK all along with Obama becoming President. Some of these folks think we have a short memory.

Jack & Jackie had a baby boy that died.
Michelle said it wasn't gonna happen.....but I wouldn't be shocked if in March they aren't announcing that she's about oh 4 months along.......wouldn't be shocked at ALL.

Jack & Jackie had a baby boy that died. Miranda,
I didn't know that. I hadn't heard it before. Thanks for the info!
I wouldn't be shocked either about the baby news. It sure would be exciting too!
Hi All - I was listening to the Tom Joyner morning show this morning and they gave a shout out to this website that was created because this couple was so taken with the Obamas and the Obama family. They set out to highlight strong black families. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet but wanted to share anyway.
I wrote in another thread that there could be an entire blog devoted to gender expression of Black men in America.
A respected NFL player goes on air in a "typical" feminine show.
Reminds me of my father who passed away at 87.
Tuskegee Airman. War Hero. Blue-Collar Brewery Worker. Hipster. Family Man. Artist. Interior Designer and Decorator. Chef. Jazz Singer. High Tenor.
He had no problem crying.
He was the strongest representation of Black manhood in my life. He didn't like that I was a sissy as a boy, more because he thought I'd be a victim of physical brutality, but he loved me anyway. What he didn't understand is that I could and can kick anybody's ass. He sang my favorite love song at my wedding to my Dutch husband.
I never conformed to gender stereotypes either. I won't navel gaze more than I have to in this reply, but suffice it to say, my friends in the theater find my athletic accomplishments almost unbelievable. My first boss at a restaurant where all the waiters were gay said she had no idea I was for the first two years of my three-year employment.
I understand why people laugh at this headline. But it's not really funny at all.
Black people need a much more serious discussion about gender and sexuality so that we're not voting against marriage equality in California 70% to 30%.
MsKitty
Craig I apologize if you took offense at my post, but you completely jumped to the wrong conclusion here. My ridicule was not directed toward gender roles by any stretch. Keyshawn Johnson is one of those larger-than-life professional athletes who craves the spotlight (his autobiography is called Just Give Me the Damn Ball...which kinda says it all). I'm finding the amusement strictly from his attempts to stretch his 15 minutes of fame. That's it, nothing more nothing less. I would like to think I've been on JJP long enough that all of you know that's not how I roll.
No, MsKitty. I took no offense to you. Let's just say the failure of Prop 8 being put on the altar of Black people has me feeling raw, even as I rejoice at President Obama's election.
I love my people. And anytime I get a chance to confront one of our Big Elephants, I have to do so.
MsKitty
Fair enough.
Miranda
No Craig, we're not laughing at an athlete doing an interior design show...we're laughing at KEYSHAWN JOHNSON doing an interior design show...or ANY reality show for that matter. If you follow football and know Keyshawn....its funny as hell.
Maybe I don't know enough about Keyshawn (wasn't he rumored to be having an affair with Serena at some point?), but this was my response. I hope you see it for what it is because I think it's important.
Miranda
I do, I didn't want you to think we were stereotyping men roles. No, its just that Keyshawn is a show unto himself - a reality show just means he's gonna double up on acting a fool for sure. I never heard he dated Serena - that must have been a long time ago.
Val
Craig - your comments is important . . . it was the title of the article with the name Keys . . . . forget it. No harm no foul
Val
I meant to say your comments are important
Later
Miranda
I didn't even click on the link, just saw "Keyshawn Johnson gets interior design show" and started laughing.

And now commentary from the stiff upper lips from across the pond. It is strange and alian but I find it rather funny.
I have been saying this for weeks since her admitted on Hannity and Colmes. It is shocklingly hypocritical given the rhetoric coming from conservatives.
Miranda
I happened to flip over and watch Alan Colmes rip him a new one last night. It was hilarious. I didn't even know Colmes had that in'em. LOL He must be flossing around Fox since Tuesday night...LOL
RALEIGH, N.C. — President-elect Obama has won North Carolina, a symbolic triumph in a state that hadn't voted for a Democrat in more than a generation.
The Associated Press declared Obama the winner Thursday after canvassing counties in North Carolina to determine the number of outstanding provisional ballots.
That survey found that there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican John McCain to close a 13,693-vote deficit.
North Carolina's 15 electoral votes brings Obama's total to 364 _ nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call.
Obama's win in North Carolina was the first for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter won the state in 1976.

Millions of Black people in America and billions around the world are greeting the sweeping Republican defeat with a sense of relief and even exhilaration. However, their interpretation of the Obama victory is very different from that of the Democratic Party leadership, including Obama himself, and the ruling class constituency that backed the Illinois senator as “Johnny come lately” as you can see from the list above.
The US media will doubtless say that the Democratic victory is not a mandate for a radical change of course. Already, even before the votes were counted and Obama's victory was officially acknowledged, leading Democrats were putting forward precisely this position. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who threw his support to Obama during the Democratic primary contest, cautioned Tuesday night that the Democrats should "be modest" and "seek alliances." Georgia Congressman John Lewis echoed these remarks, saying the Democrats had to "go slowly" and pursue a "bipartisan" course.
In fact, last Tuesday's election was a clear popular mandate for a reversal of right-wing-klux’cer policies that have largely been of a bipartisan character.
Whatever satisfaction the Democratic Party draws from its victory is tempered by the realization within President-elect Obama's inner circle, the party leadership and the political establishment that the mass expectations and hopes aroused by the election will not be easily contained. The outcome of the election sets the stage for a new and protracted period of intense “fight for your rights” conflict in the United States… That said…
These are the names and contact information you need for JOBS and STAFF positions in the Obama Administration.

TRANSITION!!
Today, SHRUB, [O.K., almost-former, seat-warmer for the next 75 days, President Bush], held a press conference to ANNOUNCE that there WILL be a "SMOOTH TRANSITION" to President-Elect Obama! Whoooo! Hoooo! :>)
The New York Times breaks down the massive tasks at hand for President-elect Barack Obama when he steps into the Oval Office:
Few presidents have entered office with an economy in such turmoil. Reflecting worries that the worst may not be over, the stock market continues to languish, with a 5 percent decline on Wednesday, leaving it 35 percent below its peak last fall.
The reasons are myriad: the financial system, though back from the brink, remains deeply troubled. Housing may no longer be in free fall, but plummeting values and rising defaults have impoverished many homeowners and burdened states with widening budget deficits. The once-mighty auto industry is on the verge of implosion.
Consumers who piled up credit card debt are pulling back, a major concern because their spending helped power economic growth in recent years. And with unemployment widely expected to increase to 8 percent or higher, from 6.1 percent, consumers are likely to tighten their belts even more.
Here's the to-do list that the Times assembled:
# Economic Stimulus: Obama Is Likely to Act Quickly # Mortgages: A Pledge to Aid Homeowners # Federal Regulation: Tighter Reins on Wall Street # Auto Industry: In Detroit, No Cash, No Credit, No Time # Health Care: An Overhaul Will Have to Wait # Technology: To Shape Policy, a Cabinet Voice # Energy: An Agenda Faces Possible Delays # Trade: Cooperation Fades, Protectionism Rises

Bachmann, ugh. That's her district - suburban (monied whites) and rural, how do Green Lady and Rickyrah put it, "low information voters" who believe the financial mess is the fault of "minority and poor people getting houses and credit they can't afford." Hi JJP ... man I am soooo tired, still tired. think I got a few hours of sleep in the past two days. However, I would like to say something about moving forward. Olbermann chided Brown for mistakenly claiming that the last time the same party controlled the White House, the Senate and the House was under Jimmy Carter.
"The talking point got out enough that the anchor of another news broadcast at this hour reported yesterday that last time it happened it," — and here Olbermann turned on his Brown impression — "didn't go so well, and people who have been worried about the possibility of one party controlling the White House and Congress. 'The last president to do that, of course, was Jimmy Carter.' Swing and a miss. Her colleague tried to correct her. 'Bill Clinton.' Swing and another miss. Correct answer: George W. Bush, that current guy. Early 2001 and again from 2003-2006."
freespiritbty
I just read that article and agree with K.O. Thanks for posting.
Campbell Brown is like Tavis Smiley to me. They both are asserting that they will keep Barack Obama accountable, yet neither of them can seem to get their facts straight.
They both are claiming to be "objective," but IT IS QUITE CLEAR that Tavis is harboring a HUGE grudge and envy. And it is also evident that Campbell Brown isn't even as competent as Sarah Palin.
Campbell Brown is an embarrassment for serious journalists and Tavis Smiley is a dissapointment for all of us who once supported him. There are "worthier" journalists much more deserving of the air time that these two people are now consuming.

Good! I hope he keeps holding CNN's feet to the fire! CNN and particularly Campbell Brown with her ‘No Bias No Bull” BS has been trying to piss all over President elect Obama’s win with this non-sense focus on Obama not winning the white vote. She's been doing this type of shit for months!
As I said yesterday, someone needs to bust this myth that Bill Clinton or any Democrat since Lyndon Johnson as won the white vote. They have NOT! Carter got 47% in 1976 and Bill Clinton got 39% and 43% in 1992 and 1996 respectively. If Obama’s numbers hold, he will receive 44%--higher than Bill Clinton's high. Moreover, he is the only Democratic candidate since Lyndon Johnson to get a clear majority. Carter barely broke 50% in '76 and Clinton never broke 50% in '92 nor '96. On the Republican side, Reagan barely broke 50% in 1980. It wasn’t until his re-election in 1984 that he got that overwhelming majority, and Bush Sr. got a sizeable majority in 1988. In fact, Senator Obama will have the third highest percentage of the total in the last 36 years and the highest actual vote number in history. Someone needs to set the record straight!
I just wish Olbermann would hold his own colleagues at MSNBC accountable, namely Joe Scarborough and Mika Brizinski. Did anyone watch this morning when they effectively said all Palin needs is a presidential GED program to rehabilitate herself. One of the guests even said that her failure to know grade school geography is the failure of the eductional system.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The morning after I'm scolding my black son for letting his grades drop, warning him that his failure to excel in school now will undermine his future prospects, I hear a panel of white pundits say that all this stupid white woman needs is some tutoring to become President of the United States. It's just unreal!
freespiritbty
thunderous applause of your entire post!!
Are there no good morning shows anymore? I can't stomach Morning Snooze, nor contribute to his tom foolery. I agree with GreenLadyHere. Your last sentence was incredibly profound. This sentiment should be on the lips of every parent with a preteen child. I thought Bush was the poster child for aggressive stupidity, until Palin came on the scene. She took it to another level.
The sad part is that the media continues to give Palin a pass, yet has "questions" about Obama's "governance" as a President. Bush was a Governor and look how great this country turned out. He's one of the worse presidents in political history!

whiterosebuddy
Was it an attack? Or did he highlight her BIAS since she claims she is 'nobullnobias'?
Campbell has a very biased delivery and this is a perfect example of that ...Olberman is right to call her on these type of partisian slipups where she skips right over the Bush and GOP power the past 8 years so she can try to make folks fear 'liberals' who will 'tax and spend' not to mention Carter being perceived as very poor on foreign policy due to the crash...and folks not liking how he handled Israel.
Brown thought she was slick...I am glad Olberman called her out.
Nate_Wesley
I watched "Countdown" last night. I don't think it was an 'attack' so much as a correction of a talking point that just wasn't true.

For your entertainment ,for the next 4 years watch the republican party eat their own.Get your popcorn ready. From Redstate.com Operation Leper
Posted by: Erick Erickson
RedState is pleased to announce it is engaging in a special project: Operation Leper.
We're tracking down all the people from the McCain campaign now whispering smears against Governor Palin to Carl Cameron and others. Michelle Malkin has the details.
We intend to constantly remind the base about these people, monitor who they are working for, and, when 2012 rolls around, see which candidates hire them. Naturally then, you'll see us go to war against those candidates.
It is our expressed intention to make these few people political lepers.
They'll just have to be stuck at CBS with Katie's failed ratings.
P.S. - Did I ever tell you how RedState was able to stock Gov. Palin's campaign plane with twenty of these?. We were glad to. And we were glad not to mention it at the time. We are rooting for Sarah Palin. Don't make us add you to our list. Do you really want to be next to Kathleen Parker in the leper colony?
Nate_Wesley
If they're really pinning their hopes on Sarah Palin, then that tells you just how out of touch the GOP is.

I see this all the time around the net, "he's not really black". Granted, the same people who say this were the ones who didn't vote for him but for McCain because guess what? He is black. President Obama represents us in a literal since with a direct link to Africa and a direct link to Whites. We, as African-Americans, embody this mixture through our lineage. But are we not black? And last time I checked, "mulattos" were slaves too. Yes, our lighter brothers and sisters cross the threshold first--somebody has to open the door. This is indeed progress! I wish people would take their discrediting attitudes and sit in the corner.
Quercki
I started out thinking "he's not really black." His father was a foreigner, his ancestors weren't slaves, he was raised by whites, he didn't grow up in a ghetto, etc.
But then I saw the expressions on the faces of the black children in the pictures posted here at Jack and Jill. For them, he's black.
I was wrong.
Madeupname
A white woman can't give birth to a black man. The one drop rule is white supremacist ideology. Black blood does not pollute and negate white blood. Anyone who believes that Obama's white blood didn't play a major part in him becoming the new manager of the empire is naive and in denial.
Black is a race, there are no disqualifications due to experience. According to your litmus test, majority of blacks aren't really black.
1. My family is not from this country but they are black. Please remember that there are black people all over the world, the entire African continent, the Caribbean, Europe, All of North America, South Americca and Central America. This is what is called the African Diaspora! People of African descent around the world. Obama is a member of the African Diaspora.
(a case of narrow-minded and ignorant Americans)
2. If you are from certain parts, your ancestors were not slaves however no one in their right mind would say that blacks in parts of Africa are not BLACK.
(another case of narrow-minded and ignorant Americans)
3. Whether you are raised by or around whites, it does not change who you are. Once again, race is race, experience is experience. My neighbor has two adopted black children, the children are now something else.
(a case of extreme idiocy)
4. Many blacks did not grow up nor ever lived, or currently don't live in what you consider to be a "ghetto". Race is not class based. Middle class blacks are blacks, rich blacks are black, blacks who live in a rural town or on a farm are black etc...
Why I took you on, I do not know but you are pathetic and should have kept your thoughts to your self. I thank you for leaving it at etc... because I would not want to hear the rest of your litmus test.

That reminds me of last night's Countdown when KO did "Worst Person in the World." so you guys saw fox news last night basically bashing Palin? They said that she didnt know what countries were involved in NAFTA and she didnt know Africa was a continent. How in the hell do you go to college and not learn any of that shit? its three damn countries in nafta, lady we are one of them.

What does this say about THEM???
They need ta have an EVOLUTION in order that a "SURVIVAL OF THE SMARTEST" can emerge!! OTOH - what do I care??? I DON'T!! :>)
Bill O'Reilly is such a hypocrite. He goes on a tirade about how Obama is unqualified and unfit then says how if Palin became YP, they could give her a CRASH COURSE ON GOVERNMENT! How this is nitpicking!
There is too much on her. She throws tantrums, she is deceptive, uses her "looks" (what ever those are) and sexuality to get what she wants, she is power hungry, she is shallow, she is unwordly, she lacks basic knowledge, she is a greedy shop-o-holic..thank god the American people spoke on Tuesday! Just imagine her in office.
This women is worse than most thought and it is slowly coming out! I am still in shock after reading and hearing all that has come out on her. She has managed to drop lower than her already low expectations.
P.S. "Wasilla Hillbillies" is still giving me a laugh.
Disclaimer:
I was watching O'Reilly because I need to see his reaction as well as the reactions of Hannity and others. Bill O'Reilly could not even properly congratuate Obama. He has proven once again that he is hateful with little to no class. Then he brought on Bernie Goldberg took attack black newscasters who showed emotion over Obama's election. Whatever, that is what I expected.

And on Morning Joe they want her to run for Senator saying she would win.I guess a wink ,a smile and pageant walking are the only qualifications she needs.
The Republican Party is at a cross-roads. Bill Maher said it perfectly . . . IF the Republicans are smart they'll avoid Palin like the plague. Unless Palin undergoes a complete political makeover (basically dropping her "us v. them" type of rhetoric) her leadership is inextricably tied to a dying breed of Republican politics.
There is going to be a war for the soul of the Republican party. One side feels the necessity to change its ways. They understand Colin Powell's endorsement for what it is . . . a sign of the times . . . a flashing neon sign warning the party that it has grown too narrow for a 21st Century America.
However, the other side laughs at the idea of moderation, instead arguing that it's time to go full-steam ahead with Republican partisan politics. Why? Well, it's their unyielding belief that we live in a "center-right" country.
That's the bet they're willing to wager. And what does that tell us? Well, it gives us a hint as to what they're thinking. They think the following:
Obama didn't win . . . we (Republicans) just lost. They're not willing to admit that Obama actually beat them. So they make excuses:
1. Obama was lucky (he only won because the economy tanked); 2. We ran the wrong candidate (any competent conservative would have wiped the floor with him, i.e., let's kick out all the RINOS - Republicans In Name Only); 3. The media was in the tank for Obama .. .
The list of excuses is growing as we speak.
This latter half of the Republican party truly thinks Obama is an empty suit, affirmative-action candidate who is destined to fail within the first 6 months of his presidency. Thus, they'll do their best to try and paint Obama as the worst President our nation has ever seen, desparately hoping to play the "I told you so" card and pick up all the pieces in 2010 and 2012.
Which is fine unless, of course . . . Obama actually succeeds as president; in which case that wing of the party could go extinct like the dinosaurs.
Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough fit this mold. They find comfort in telling themselves that we still live in a "center-right" country. They blame McCain as the loser who couldn't make the sale. Thus, for them, it's not the message, but the messenger who's responsible for Tuesday night's loss.
This faction of the party will push Sarah Palin as the redeemer. And if she wins her party's nomination and campaigns the same way she did this year, the Republicans will lose 40 states in 2012. That's because the Joe Scarborough/Limbaugh/Hannity/O'Reilly wing of the Republican party is OUT OF TOUCH.
Trust . . . they'll laugh at this assertion until Obama wins re-election in 2012.
This is NOT a "center-right" country. Their confusion is based in an unwillingness or inability to distinguish between a "center-right" country and a "center-right" voting population. Until now, the "average" voter was center-right. Only one small problem . . . 2008 changed the "average voter." And the Republicans would be better served if they stopped to realize that the average voter is getting younger, browner and less ideologically driven. The average voter is NOT "Joe the Plumber." And the Republican Party, if not careful, could watch this country pass it by, leaving them with little more than a strong-hold in parts of the South, but little appeal to the rest of the country.
So the Morning Joe crowd can double down if they like. They can obsess over weak attempts to discredit President Obama (such as Scarborough's non-story over Rahm Emmanuel's still being undecided about chief-of-staff). Joe and Mika can spend three hours every morning hyping GOP talking points and change their name to the "Sarah Palin Variety Show."
As for Sarah Palin, she could very well have a clear shot at the Republican nomination in 2012. If Sen. Stevens holds on in Alaska, he'll resign (convicted felon) and Palin gets to run for the Senate in a special election. She'll likely win that special election, upon which the far right will try their best to use that Senate seat as a launching-pad for 2012.
But, for reasons already stated, they will lose because they are out of touch and in a serious state of denial.
You're dead on about the excuses and complaints (especially with the RINOs; the Freepers are not happy at all).
I actually buy into the "center right country" meme. The problem is, though, a lot of the people who are saying that-Rush, Malkin, Ingraham-ain't "center right" in the least (I laugh at Hannity, and O'Reilly is tolerable). Those three-and their ilk-need to be violently thrown out of the conservative movement, cause they're the ones who, in 2008, blew it for the moderates.
We as conservatives can be pro-life, pro-gun, anti-immigration all the day long....but the American people just showed us that hammering those messages, as a matter of politics, ain't gonna fly anymore. Not only is the country really not scared any more, probably more importantly, they ain't scared of us. Hell, I seriously doubt, after the drubbing of Tuesday, that the conservative message-in its current iteration-is even respected anymore.
"And the Republicans would be better served if they stopped to realize that the average voter is getting younger, browner and less ideologically driven."
That is key and that has been my argument. Not only are the demographics of our nation changing but so are the demographics of certain individual states which was reflected on Tuesday.
Joe the Plumber does not represent Americans in 2008 and will be a minority in as little as a few decades. They held up an non-universal representation of who America was not.
They pretty much ran against anyone who was not white Anglo-Saxon protestant....and they were sent packing.
My friend Rachel is a stauch Republican and I tried to tell her this. She like the rest of them are in denial. They don't see to get it.
They need to change their party animal from an elephant to a dinosaur because they are like...ancient past.
islandgirl550
I would love to see Sister Sarah acting a fool in Washington in the Senate. Maybe she'll learn something, but you're right, the Republican brand needs an overhaul. They'd do better to stop running on fear.
enviro
They can double down if they like -- and I sure hope they do. I find it sad, in a way, that there are no Republican representatives in the entire Northeast anymore, but if they are going to cede the whole modern agenda to us, so be it!
I think I'll replace my Obama yard sign with a "Palin 2012" yard sign -- just like my Republican uncle had his Hillary sign up for a long time. :)
If he was jet black he wouldn't be the new manager of the empire he is not black he is biracial the one drop rule is racist.
If you are white you are right
If you are brown you can stay around
If you're black get back.
I don't call that progress.
enviro
I remember working the primary election and someone (white) saying something like this, i.e. it won't be such an issue to elect him because he's half white. I just shake my head. Yes, it was helpful that he had some pictures of his white grandparents to show at the convention and during the infomercial. But everyone sees him as black. That's why the real racists are hunkering down with canned goods, etc., because they expect some sort of mayhem to break out. He had a huge hurdle to overcome and he overcame it with amazing grace. And over the course of however many months white America (most of it) kind of said yeah, you know, I will vote for a black guy if he's the best one, what do you know? I think that's huge progress. And when he's a great president -- well as my Latina babysitter's husband said to the rednecks who gave him guff for voting for a black guy because he wasn't Latino -- next time. I think we have surprised ourselves. But the most amazing thing, to me, is that we haven't surprised Pres.-elect Obama. He is so far ahead of the curve he's lapping us, heaven bless him. OK I better get off before I break into song. :)
There is a way to say things that open discussion and way to say things that discourage it among people with so MANY different ways of being and speaking and worshiping. Obama held Rev Wright in tremendous esteem and did not speak out against his words when the video came out.
I'm sure as heck didn't disagree with what Rev Wright said in the video snippets that looped on the CNN and the other stations. Nope.
What I did have a problem with was how Rev Wright- instead of using the press moment [after appearing on Leher (sp?)] as an opportunity to build a bridge with people who misunderstood what he was saying, he used it to be a clown and show the a side to him that was less than that what any spiritual leader should be. He COULD have used it as opportunity to educate but instead he did it in a way to further the divide. Wright's self-centered behavior could have cost Obama the election. (ie: acting up- throwing Que signs in the air etc while ON CAMERA.) I was embarrassed for his Church. Notice how you didn't see ANYONE coming out in defense of him after that pathetic display.
The issue was about MORE than their relationship. Don't eschew the context to feign militancy because you just come off as ignorant.
Me
So Rev. Wright was flamboyant so what? 90 percent of what he said was true and White America bayed for his blood and demanded Obama disown him, and he did what his master commanded him to do.
I'm not trying to feign milltancy, I just don't like White arrogance and denial.
Pretty much every Black person I knew was DONE with Rev Wright when he decided to show out.
Did you REALLY just link Wikipedia below as a news source? Are you serious? You sound like someone who just took ONE African American history course, or better still got educated on the yard. Get real. This is GROWN folks business folks business. There are bigger issues than Rev Wright and Obama was shrewd enough to see the forest from the trees.
Obama is a real man, a Black man. And in the end it is NOT YOU or the decisions concerning Rev Wright's simple ass that determines his love for and connection to his Black community. Incidentally to millions of Black people- he proved it. So he didn't prove it to you?
Deuces. Kick rocks and find a website that caters to marginally educated haters.
Me
Obama did come out against his words when the white media first started reporting them, even though they were taken out of context.
The fact that the truth aboutMaerica'scontinuing crimes against us has to be repudiated in order for a half black man to be acceptable enough to run their empire shows how post racial we
Well to me, the way American society sees you is what you are. Regardless of if he is half white, all they/we see is a Black man. I agree with you about if he was darker he wouldn't be where he is. Hell, if he was a little bit bigger and looked a little scary he wouldn't be where he is today. we still have a lot to overcome
Colson Whitehead has a humorous essay in the Op-Ed pages of the NYT:
"Finally, A Thin President"
An excerpt:
Yesterday morning, I woke up to a new world. America had elected a Skinny Black Guy president. ... I never thought I’d see the day. What were the chances that someone who looked like me would come to lead the most powerful nation on earth? Slim.
This thing that has happened, it just keeps hitting me in waves.
A choice so real we could not have failed to see.
And we did.
And this door is now open.
Open when before it was locked.
This is just the beginning.
Michigander2
I am serious. I am willing to contribute to a worthy cause in Obama's name. We cannot let this time go by.
I ask all of you. Why spend tikme and energy to elect Obama and then let that same energy die until 2012? I truly do not think that is what Pres. Elect Obama wants or asks from us. We need to get much more engaged.
thnks
Angela
Michelle
I myself feel a desire to get/stay engaged now. I sent a message through the Obama site today about some skills I have that I hope they might be able to use right now (saying I would like to volunteer if that would be useful.)
I may not approach engagement on the same issues as you do, Angela. But I do share your desire to DO and engage. I agree that the energy raised is important -- and keeping it active is really crucial IMO.
enviro
Yes yes yes!!!! I hope and pray they will find a way to use all the energy people have to help Pres. Obama succeed. I'm sure they would say volunteer at your local school or what have you but people want to do it to help *him* succeed. They want him to get the credit. Maybe there could be some kind of "Obama corps" where you go through a special website to volunteer for specified concerns. How many reading tutors could they funnel to selected failing schools? How many acres of national parks could they clear of invasive species? There are a bunch of low-tech, high person-hours things out there that really need to be done. Raising money is great, I hope they (Barack AND Michelle) will pick some pet causes. But people want to DO something to -- and they want to do it to help him succeed. I speak for myself, of course, but I think it's true in general. We don't want to let this fade. It's really important.
parker404ga
This sounds like a nice idea, an "Obama corps" of volunteers. You should suggest it on his campaign website, I remember reading about Obama asking people to send in ideas to him.
Michigander2, I'd like to use your idea for another "Discussion Issue" Thread. Shoot me an email at lstills@gmail.com with some of your thoughts on how to keep the energy going.
rikyrah
what's the issue you think we should be raising the funds for now.
Michigander2
I will say it again. I am retired. It is disgraceful that in our country we have a "corridor of shame." My issue is to erase this from any discussion and we can do it by a bipartisan effort appealing to all who appreciate education. Yes we can!

Voter reform. It needs to be addressed big time.
djchefron
Jim Martins run off in Georgia. He needs our help.
Al Franken's in a run-off in Minnesota, trying to unseat the slimy Norm Coleman.
Less than 500 votes separate them - but I'm wondering about Minnesota that they could return that loony Michelle Bachmann back to Congress to infest the Hill for another two years.
spirit_55z
CPL, my heart is heavy for the Bachman win here in Minnesota. . The 6th district she represents in Anoka County is full of rednecks and loonies just like her. Go figure! I think her opposing the bailout may have swayed folks here to vote for her.
I think Al and Norm are in the runoff in some measure, was due to Independent Dean Barkley. He got 15-16% of the vote.
I'm working harder to become more politically astute. Any recommendations or ideas are appreciated!
rikyrah
I agree with all. Martin and Coleman needs help.
And the thought that this country needs Voting Reform is obvious. Good choices

Get over it...We won yesterday, now we need to win all of the tomorrows.

Constant vigilence! But a little celebration is truly in order. I think we will have enough energy left for the challenges ahead.
nickwah22
get over it? the people on this blog are thinking forward and aren't ONLY basking in the glory that he has won. And even if we were, which some people are, we have every right too, it took us long enough to get ONE person there, are we suppose to exclaim joy for a short period of time and then move on? Hell, Superbowl fans are allowed more time to celebrate than that!
Michigander2
your response is appreciated....my whole thing is ok, what do you (us) do with the win now....just revel in it for win's sake or actually we can do something to make a difference.
I would bet and as witnessed by the news today, President Elect Obama is not sitting back on his heels and enjoying the moment. I say as supporters we should do something soon to support him in " visible" ways to ensure his success for our country.
This election is not about Sen. Obama, this election is about this country, no matter you ethinic background.
Sen. Obama was elected by every ethnic background. This is not just a victory for blacks, it is a victory for people like me, an American Indian
nickwah22
And you suggest doing what? What are you doing personally???
Michigander2
by the way, how often do you send money to your family members who need a hand out? I do it at least once a month. Do you that nickwah22?
Michigander2
you do not know me,...so don't suggest to me that I do not partcipate in my community.
I am a Native American and I know what it is like to suffer bias from all levels..from a person of color as well as a female.

Stop trying to hold your self so high and might about absolutely nothing.
nickwah22
Calm down lady, it was a question that you still have not answered. And what does your ethnicity have to do with what you are doing for your community?
Make a suggestion. Don't just talk about it be about it. Before you complain about something you need to come with a solution.
Puh-lease and give me a break. You are as useful to me as the trolls. Like we used to say back in the day, poof - be - gone. I don't have time for the foolishness - there are things in my community that I can focus on.
Michigander2
Are you taking care of your own family, are you investing in your own community?
I contribute every single day that I can to my community and my family. Do You?
nickwah22
Dear Michigander2,
MONEY isn't the only way to support your family and/or community. And since you ask YES I do take care of my family and yes I have, since I have been a teenager given back to my community. I don't need the election of a Black man to the Presidency to open my eyes or to encourage me. That may not be the case for everyone, but I can only lead by example. I have seen you write the same thing at least 4 times about US needing to do something. All you can do is spread the word, lead by example and stay positive.
Michigander2
I never said money was the be all. You seem to question me more than you do others. Why? I don''t know and frankly do not care.
I am a Native American who knows all about life in this country. I don't need you or others to "preach" to me.
God bless you...and this is my last post on the jjp site Angela

rikyrah: MUDFLATS has begun to "perform an autopsy" on the UN-VETTED ONE:
Sarah Palin has taken the collective soul of national politics, divided and conquered. In eight short weeks, a political unknown from Alaska went from hockey mom Governor, to national megastar, and finally came to rest with the simultaneous titles of “Conservative Rising Star” and “Most Feared Woman in America”. It’s been quite a ride.
SKIP
Then a strange transformation began to happen before our eyes. After the surprise nomination, and the subsequent campaigning, our hometown girl started acting differently. Maybe it was the crowds, maybe it was the taste of power, maybe it was Neiman Marcus. But suddenly here was our governor talking about expanding the powers of the Vice President, dropping tens of thousands of dollars in other people’s money on fancy clothes, smearing local politicians and public servants back home, and dropping hints that she’s entered the national scene and may not want to leave, at least for the long term. That was a lot to take for many Alaskans. It remains to be seen if Alaska, the jilted boyfriend will take Sarah back. There are lots of fences to be mended, and relationship counseling in our future. While there are many Sarah fans who will welcome her back with open arms, there are many who have turned their back, and others who feel downright vengeful. It will be a tangled knot to untie.Palin has sliced her state down the middle and polarized her constituents in a way that I would not have imagined possible just a few months ago. The majority of Alaskans still support her, but her negative ratings have soared as Alaskans and the rest of the country have gotten to know her, and her political life will not be the cake walk it once was. And there are many investigations, and skeletons in the closet that are just beginning to emerge.Whatever the outcome, there is no question that Sarah Palin has been let out of the box.
Town
The Palin family has gotten a taste of the lower 48 and IMO they won't be content with staying in Alaska forever. That middle girl, Willow, I'd bet a million dollars the day she turns 18 she's gonna leave Alaska and never look back. She's gotten a chance to travel all over the country for the past two months --she's gotten a taste of America and that thirst won't be quenched in Alaska (Bristol, however, is stuck).
Mama Sarah has also gotten a taste of the lower 48 and their fancy stores and adoring crowds and she's not going to be content sitting in Wasilla, either. The GOP knows this which is why they are trying to destroy her NOW...they are trying to grind her up and leave her in a heap in Alaska. If they are serious about grinding down Sarah, they need to grind down Todd, too.
GreenLadyHere
Town: SPEAK! IMHO it's important to support HER Political demise!
Apparently, some fools supported HER!!
Let's say she somehow "wiggles" [:>) INTENTIONAL] her way into the Senate - by manipulating "Stevens" seat! {NOTE: I stopped at his "seat!" :>)} Then she would be able to cast a vote AGAINST a plan of President Obama!

I hope Bristol can escape, but she's an unwed pregnant teenager with no high school diploma or marketable skills. What is she going to do? Financially it might be best to stick by her grifter parents.
Willow sees all the BS that's going down and she's going to leave Alaska for college as soon as she can. She's going to be the first one of them to go to college for appearance's sake.
jelana
Bristol's boyfriend said he would marry her after the election. Since Palin lost, the wedding is probably kaput!
RonnieB
Frankly, I don't care about this woman. Let her and her entire peckerwood family dissolve into obscurity.

She will be back make no mistake about it.The republican party is about to go to war among themselves between the theocrats and the ones who are sane. The theocrats provide the ground troops and their hero is Palin.Do not underestimate this grifter she will be back even this time even meaner.
And Piper better enjoy that Louis Vuitton Bag she got (probably a knock-off), cause she gets no more toys on the taxpayers' dime any more.
If Sarah Palin goes grocery shopping, she's going to have to turn over the receipts to show she paid with her own debit card - that's how much scrutiny she will be under after she gets back to Alaska.

Do we have enough lawyers who can help us make this happen?

Michigander2
It will start before our Pres. Elect takes office.
Everything he and his wife does will be scrutinized beyond belief.
nickwah22
It started two years ago, they know how to handle it.
Even the nation’s oldest living man is celebrating Barack Obama’s extraordinary victory.
At 112, George Rene Francis of Sacramento has lived through 19 U.S. presidents and six decades of Jim Crow laws, when he and all black Americans were forced to endure racial segregation.
The slight, wheelchair-bound New Orleans native also has outlived all other men in the country, according to the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks proven records of extreme age worldwide.
On Wednesday, a beaming Francis told his daughters he felt like jumping up and down after helping to elect the nation’s first black president.
Despite his troubled vision, Francis clearly recognized a newspaper photo of Obama, his wife and daughters as the senator prepared to speak at his victory rally in Chicago.
“Daddy, do you know who that is?” asked his 78-year-old daughter Lelia LaRue, placing a hand on Francis’ shoulder.
“Yes, that’s Obama,” Francis said, letting out a small sigh. “It’s beautiful. He made democracy work.”
Francis, who was born on June 6, 1896, grew up listening to Louis Armstrong play trumpet on his front porch in New Orleans’ Seventh Ward. He still remembers when Booker T. Washington told his third-grade class to treat everyone with respect.

I could not beleive how they stuck with Hill after she loss those 11 consecutive primaries...up until then I was hating their cowardice but willing to forgive...but when they stayed on the bandwagon in March and listen to BubbaBill without standing up to him...they were dead in my book. Even Rangel, stepping into the mix and spinning racial hate for BillandHill had the good sense to have his wife throw a fundraiser for Barack to get back in the door.
But Obama owes them nothing!! Hallelujiah. Kendrick Meeks and JacksonLee along with Waters can all go to HELL.
I wonder if Jesse Jr will wind up getting Obama's Senate seat. I was wondering if that was what was causing all the Emanuel manuevring, that Rahm did not want to be taken out of contention so early for that seat and Obama made the move real quick so JJJ would have more leverage?

I know you can't stand him, CPL, but you can't forget Artur Davis. Dislike him all you want, he backed Obama early and strongly.
True dat, but Artur Davis is a sneaky SOB who's only saving grace is that he backed Obama from the jump - if not, think a smarter version of the DARK SITH, and maybe without the Sith's lusting for snowflakes.

Yep, Artur was right in there and I loved hearing him advocate and support for Obama, especially since Lewis' voice was missing. We needed to have that southern support and Davis did an excellent job.
I wonder if he will take a cabinet position or if he is just going to focus on running for Governor.
I liked how Davis was a Harvard man too and represented the new wave of black politicos like the Governor of Mass, can't think of his name,...all young Harvard alum

Artur Davis' name has been tossed around for AG, but I'd rather see that go to Eric Holder. I don't think Artur is ready for that position, but a 2010 gubernatorial race would be better timing.
The MA Gov you're thinking of is Deval Patrick.

Green lady they better get right, because we all can be responsible for holding their feet to the fire.
