It ain't working. Last I checked, “biracial” or “multiracial” is not a race, just words/categories that make some of y'all feel better. Sorry folks, but it is quite simple: President-Elect Obama is a black man with a white mother. Whatever word you choose to describe him it does not matter, he is the owner of his racial identity. Not you.

This has been going on for a LONG LONG time. I met a 70 year old woman from Tuskegee, Alabama who transplanted to Brooklyn. I wanted to hear about her life in the South. And she was more than willing to oblige. She spent hours regaling me with story after story. I finally asked her about children of mixed race parents. Her response, “Child, from way back it was rampant. Some relationships were in hiding but mostly it was the the white men raping the black women and getting them pregnant.” Now, me and my naivete said, “So what about the police? Why didn't they report it?” She laughed and said,”But it was the police and the mayor and the big shot white men doing the raping.” I was SHOCKED. SHOCKED. I probably shouldn't have been but I was. She continued to say, “Those children were as black as me so the men never owned them, couldn't own them, never cared. Those children were nothing to them.”

I asked her about PE Obama. She just smiled and touched my knee and said, “We going to have a black man for President. Isn't that something? But wait, they going to try to claim him because he done something good.” Folks, this conversation took place in June. She said to me,”You wait and see. They gonna try to take away his blackness.” And then she went on to talk about Michelle Obama.

About our next First Lady she said, “The first night she sleeps in the White House, they should just put her in a public place where people can just walk through there and take a picture.” I laughed out loud and asked why. She said, “A black woman sleeping up in the White House legally? WIth the President, no less? Come on now!” Imagine her clapping he hands multiple ties as she says this. The glee on her face was remarkable.

This sh*t means something to a lot of black folks – especially the older ones. The fact that many black people have European Caucasian blood flowing through their veins have never given them a pass yet. You look like a black person, you get treated like one. And there are many black people who could “pass” and don't. Why? We are proud of our people. We are proud of our blackness. It is a state of mind. To belong.

Folks, our president is black!
