Obamarama: The Obamas Pick a School — It’s Sidwell Friends

President-Elect and Michelle Obama have chosen Sidwell Friends for their daughters, Malia and Sasha. They will have to go to two different campus settings, because the lower school is separate from the middle school & high school campus.

Sidwell’s lower school is in Bethesda, Md., and that is where Sasha would be attending second grade. Malia is in fifth grade, and that is part of the middle school at Sidwell. The middle school is located on the same campus as the high school in Northwest Washington, a few miles from the lower school.
Sidwell has between 1,000 and 1,100 students and says that 39 percent of its students are of color. Tuition this year for elementary is is $28,442, and for the middle school, $29,442.

Well, Sidwell is already familiar with how to deal with having children of the First Family at their school. Plus, it was reported that the girls were more comfortable there because they knew that some of the Biden grandchildren attend Sidwell.

I'm glad they were able to find a school where the girls would feel comfortable. IIRC, Chelsea wasn't the first, uh, first kid to have attended Sidwell, so school officials have to be well aware of the security concerns.
With any luck, the MSM will leave the girls alone once they're enrolled in schoool. As adorable as they are, I'd like them to get a little less public attention so they can go back to being the normal girls their parents want them to be.

Wow! Reading some of the responses at the source site really had me taken aback. Some folks actually expected them to go to public school? For what? They were in private school while living in Chicago.

Me, too. This has got to be world-altering for them. They're moving into a brand new house, leaving behind their friends–and quite unlike other children, they can't just walk across the street and find new friends. So if they're comfortable, then that's very good. I'm so glad they have friends in the Biden's grandkids. That's a benefit I hadn't quite considered when Barack first asked Joe.
As for me–I'm happy that they will be in a school where they will be safe. That's all that matters, and for everyone else who has lip about it, they can just step off.

I just roll my eyes at those folks. Some people just don't get it. I moved around a lot when I was younger, it was hard. Those girls need as much stability as possible. They shouldn't have to be made into a giant experiment. They went to a lab school in Chicago, a private school (or another lab school) would be an easier transition than the DC Public School System.
I never understood this mentality of “keeping it real=staying in the ghetto”. If you work had to get out poverty/ghetto/projects/etc. shouldn't you kids enjoy the fruits if your labor? Isn't that why people try so hard to get out in the first place, to make a better life for their kids? Didn't we expect former presidents to give their kids the best? Don't we want that for our own president-elect? Those folks need to give me a break with that mess!

The above is an excerpt from wikipedia. Not the most accurate source, but still..if that is true, what the hell kind of life is that for a little girl?
Of course the Obama girls should attend a private school, for no other reason that private schools can control who comes and goes from their property. Of course, the schools that they looked at were all excellent. And they are smart girls, so they need an academic challenge AND some friends.
Sheesh, why are people confused about this?

Hope there are some little sistas there as well…I don't know what their school situation was in Chicago, but it would be good for them to see a mix of young girls and women at their school.

Same thing I say. And for what I understand this school is very grounded. Academically excellent, but not big on snobbery. It's pretty much ideal. No need to try to make a point when you've paid truckloads of student loans to make sure your kids CAN do better.

I was actually shocked by that number. That is very good for a school with such a high level of prestige and such expensive tuition. Our Wee Ones are gonna be ok. Let's keep them in our prayers.
