After eight years of that prissy-faced librarian who has put up with the cruel, juvenile, dry-drunk, Incurious George, I'm ready for a real woman in the White House. She's a good mama (can you see Malia and Sasha turning out like Bush's daughters? No, of course not), smart as hell, educated, and elegant w/o being frumpy or glassine. How very cool. I love this country!

I know it's crazy to say but I feel like I finally have a role model. Not an entertainer (not that anything is wrong with that) but a brilliant beautiful black woman who I can look at and see myself. As I first year law student I look at all that she has accomplished and am so inspired.

I'm a big-ass white girl in love with Michelle Obama for her poise, grace, intelligence, and sincerity…and just the fact that she's a genuine, beautiful person. How fortunate we are to have a first lady of this caliber.

The best part of this election has been seeing her on TV and in magazines. I feel lucky to have her as an inspiration. She is a professional, highly educated, loving mother and wife with a sassy sense of humor. Love her!!

Read this and then think about our President Elect Obama and his beautiful wife and daughters in the White House. I've had my Christmas this year! Everything else good that happens in 2008 is just icing on the cake for me.

"Slavery in the White House

When George Washington was president (1789-1797) he lived in New York and Philadelphia. He brought cooks, maids and coachmen from Mount Vernon — all of them slaves — to work at his house alongside white servants. The presidents in the early days were expected to hire and pay for their own staff. Since many of the early presidents were southern planters, they brought their slaves to work for them in Washington, D.C. Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809) brought slaves from Monticello, and during his presidency the second child ever born in the President’s House was born to his slaves, Fanny and Eddy. Paul Jennings was the personal servant of President James Madison (1809-1817). He was a slave who wrote down his memories of living in the Madison White House. You can read them by clicking here. Tennesseans Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) and James K. Polk (1845-1849) also brought slaves from their farms, and almost always they lived in basement rooms. Enslaved craftsmen helped build the White House. Black servants helped save documents and art when the British burned the structure in 1814. Most of all, African Americans made the president’s household operate efficiently. But it was a man who never held others as property, Abraham Lincoln, who would make sure that slaves would never work in the White House again."

when i voted i cried because of the significance of that moment. last night, i was pretty much in shock and couldn't emote. but today, just the thought that michelle obama is going to be my first lady put me in tears… i can't even describe the love, awe and respect that i hold for her…

When the President-elect gave her a shout out in his speech last night, I remarked to my family “Fuck Thomas Jefferson.” Seeing a beautiful, accomplished, loved Black woman enter the White House through the front door, as First Lady, is a wonderful thing and a huge departure from Sally Hemmings treatment.
