“Ms Arana reminds me of those white people during slavery who would dismiss any example of black achievement as being due to the individual's “white blood”. Why isn't she rushing to claim the biracial prisoners as part of her post-racial utopia?”

And another thinks PE Obama is just a plain user for calling himself black. Ooooookay:

No, Ms. Arana, if Obama chose to present himself as black, it's because he saw opportunity to capitalize on society's dated language and logic. The president elect is nothing if not calculated.”

“My question to the author is a very simple one. If Obama isn't black, are there any black people in the US? I ask this in view of the fact that a considerable majority of African Americans have 'white blood' in them.”

And another suggests that he might be neither black nor white, he is Asian. Got that?

“I cannot but agree fully with Marie Arana. I will even go further and say that President elect Obama is also an Asian. He is also a Pacific Islander. So Why are we calling him black? His victory made me feel that there is some belonging or inclusivness. I like most others never felt this way in previous Presidential elections. Mr president Obama, Please do not call yourself Black. You are only half black. What about your Asian roots and Hawaian roots? Dont they count?”

“I do not question that obama is bi-racial. I do question why it is that people have the need to get in an uproar about him not being black. This does not seem to be a concern in general even though a large proportion of blacks in the U.S. are actually of mixed descent. Why is it that people need to point out the mixed heritage of “this” particularly man? It can appear to many that the only time a black persons mixed heritage is of importance in the U.S. is when that black persons rises to a certain level of success. However, there is no outcry about the average black person of mixed race being identified, or self-identifying as black. So yes, he is of mixed race even though he, like many others, self identifies as black. But the real question is: What are your motives for insisting on recognizing his mixed heritage?”
