Number of Outstanding Ballots Grows To 81,000

The state Elections Division said Friday 81,000 votes remain to be counted, mostly early votes but also absentee and questioned ballots.

That may be enough to swing as many as six state legislative races, and the number of votes is making the U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Stevens and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich look increasingly close.

Stevens now leads by 3,257 votes out of 221,713.

Both Begich and House Minority Leader Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, issued press releases saying it was too soon to decide their races.

Begich is hoping early votes will trend Democratic and give him a victory.

ELECTION UPDATE

The Mark Begich-Ted Stevens race remains too close to call, and word is we might have some new numbers soon. My good friend Ethan Berkowitz (we’ve been friends from long before either of us stumbled into politics) has an outside chance of closing his gap against Congressman Don Young, but the gap in that race is pretty substantial right now. And we have a roughly half dozen State House and Senate races with less than 200 vote differences that could change too.

(Newser) – Since Adlai Stevenson,America has recoiled from intellectuals in power—but maybe Barack Obama, “an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual,” can change that, writes Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times. “Smart and educated leadership is no panacea,” Kristof notes, “but we’ve seen recently that the converse—a White House that scorns expertise and shrugs at nuance—doesn’t get very far either.”

Bush “adopted anti-intellectualism as administration policy, repeatedly rejecting expertise,” Kristof says. Obama, on the other hand, “exults in complexity.” That’s not to say intellectuals always have the right answers—compare George Washington, no egghead, to James Garfield, a fluent writer of Latin and Greek. But “as Mr. Obama goes to Washington, I’m hopeful that his fertile mind will set a new tone for our country,” Kristof writes.

Mr. Bush is smart in the sense of remembering facts and faces, yet I can’t think of anybody I’ve ever interviewed who appeared so uninterested in ideas. – Nicholas Kristof

The Obamas Make Tuna Salad, Talk Favorite Foods (VIDEO)

Early into the Obama candidacy, 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft paid a visit to the family's Chicago home and was privy to some tuna salad-making (recipe below) in the kitchen. The conversation turned to other things the then-senator cooks well (Malia: “Chili and that's it”), and Obama defended himself: “The truth is, before I met Michelle I did quite a bit of cooking. I had an Indian roommate for a while, so I learned how to make Indian food. I grew up in Hawaii where there's a lot of Asian influence, so I learned how to cook Chinese food…also, the stuff I make is a little too spicy for these guys.” When Obama asks his daughters what kind of food they like, they deliver a unanimous and resounding reply: “Cheese.” “So,” Obama continues, “it's not as if we've got real sophisticated palates in this household.” Scroll down to see the video.

I can't imagine who might be absorbing his philosophies. I imagine they're just as offensive to whites. He would have one believe that all interactions between the races our thought out and staged; that blacks are forever readjusting. He gives no explanation for the way humans readjust for varying situations and scenarios.

I'm trying to clean this up, but I can't do it.

He doesn't understand how someone can be Black, self-respecting, successful all at the same time. It's like him and HIS ilk are the only ones who are 'successful', and believe in self-help, and have determination. I'll be honest; I never understood how they tried to NOT SEE all the successful Black folk out there.
