The state Elections Division said Friday 81,000 votes remain to be counted, mostly early votes but also absentee and questioned ballots.
That may be enough to swing as many as six state legislative races, and the number of votes is making the U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Stevens and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich look increasingly close.
Stevens now leads by 3,257 votes out of 221,713.
Both Begich and House Minority Leader Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, issued press releases saying it was too soon to decide their races.
Begich is hoping early votes will trend Democratic and give him a victory.

rikyrah: MUDFLATTERS are CLOSELY WATCHING the SENATORIAL RACE!
The Mark Begich-Ted Stevens race remains too close to call, and word is we might have some new numbers soon. My good friend Ethan Berkowitz (we’ve been friends from long before either of us stumbled into politics) has an outside chance of closing his gap against Congressman Don Young, but the gap in that race is pretty substantial right now. And we have a roughly half dozen State House and Senate races with less than 200 vote differences that could change too.
Well, I'm going back down South!! :>) :>) It's COLD up here!! :>) :>)
(Newser) – Since Adlai Stevenson,America has recoiled from intellectuals in power—but maybe Barack Obama, “an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual,” can change that, writes Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times. “Smart and educated leadership is no panacea,” Kristof notes, “but we’ve seen recently that the converse—a White House that scorns expertise and shrugs at nuance—doesn’t get very far either.”
Bush “adopted anti-intellectualism as administration policy, repeatedly rejecting expertise,” Kristof says. Obama, on the other hand, “exults in complexity.” That’s not to say intellectuals always have the right answers—compare George Washington, no egghead, to James Garfield, a fluent writer of Latin and Greek. But “as Mr. Obama goes to Washington, I’m hopeful that his fertile mind will set a new tone for our country,” Kristof writes.
Mr. Bush is smart in the sense of remembering facts and faces, yet I can’t think of anybody I’ve ever interviewed who appeared so uninterested in ideas. - Nicholas Kristof

Annnnnd, SOME people [McAncient/the UN-VETTED ONE's supporters] were WILLING to settle for 4 MORE YEARS of the same STUPIDITY!! GEESH!!!
Reflecting back on the article: NO BRAINS = NO CHECKS/BALANCES; NO REGULATIONS; NO OVERSIGHT!; LAISSEZ FAIRE ADMINISTRATIVE STYLE; "DON'T BOTHER ME WITH DETAILS!"; ECONOMIC COLLAPSE!!
Early into the Obama candidacy, 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft paid a visit to the family's Chicago home and was privy to some tuna salad-making (recipe below) in the kitchen. The conversation turned to other things the then-senator cooks well (Malia: "Chili and that's it"), and Obama defended himself: "The truth is, before I met Michelle I did quite a bit of cooking. I had an Indian roommate for a while, so I learned how to make Indian food. I grew up in Hawaii where there's a lot of Asian influence, so I learned how to cook Chinese food...also, the stuff I make is a little too spicy for these guys." When Obama asks his daughters what kind of food they like, they deliver a unanimous and resounding reply: "Cheese." "So," Obama continues, "it's not as if we've got real sophisticated palates in this household." Scroll down to see the video.
From what we can decipher, Obama's tuna salad recipe is as follows:
See, I would have "children-watched" FOR FREE!! :>) :>)

IFF, Stevens gets beat, There is no worry about the UN-VETTED ONE UNLESS HE RESIGNS!
Although Ted Stevens currently holds a lead of approximately 3,200 votes in ballots counted to date in Alaska's senate contest, there is good reason to believe that the ballots yet to be counted -- the vast majority of which are early and absentee ballots -- will allow Mark Begich to mitigate his disadvantage with Stevens and quite possibly pull ahead of him.
The reasoning behind this is simple: some early ballots have been processed, and among those ballots Begich substantially leads Stevens. A tally of Alaska's 40 house districts as taken from Alaska's Division of Elections webpage suggests that Begich has won about 61% of the early ballots counted so far, as compared with 48% of ballots cast on Election Day itself.

Rikyah,
I love the Sun-Times cover you posted. I was lucky to get copies early Wednesday morning.
However, I spent the better half of today trying to find today's collector's editions of both the Tribune and Suntimes (and Time magazine). No luck.
rikyrah
Honey,
It took me 2 and a half hours, and 13 stops before I got the copies of the Sun-Times and Tribune that I wanted.
I spent 5 hours on Friday, before I found Time and Newsweek.
The Secret Service traditionally has given pithy, private names to those whose lives they protect. The monikers are a throwback to a time when electronic communications were not encrypted, and they no longer serve a security function. Still, they give an occasional peek at the players' personalities, in addition to serving as great trivia questions.

Anovelista: Hey! Now, can I be in the Secret Service? :>) :>) :>)

Damn! y'all just gave me a speedy education on this dude. And I appreicate the lesson. It seems to me, that it would require a helluva lot more energy to deny one's own self identity to prop up another's insecurities and fears.
Run Shelby, run, but shut the phuck up!
rikyrah
I love this title from Coates:
I got a president who's calm and plain. He goes by the name of Barack Hussein
The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska. The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.
rikyrah
but, um..um....Sununu is PRO-LIFE....just -a-sayin'

I am white, and I voted for Barack Obama because he INSPIRED ME in a way that neither McCain nor Bush ever could hope to (or even Hillary "obliterate 'em" Clinton, who I never could stand). Listen, we've just been through eight years with this war-mongering, Constitution shredding moron. Obama is a breath of fresh air following the Bush years. I expect he'll be a great president. I mean that genuinely and sincerely.
Someone once told me that the Black community is not monolithic. Neither are whites. We don't all think alike nor vote for a candidate for the same reasons. I don't fool myself that we are living in a post-racial world. Some whites believe this, but most progressive whites do not (just listen to Democracy Now). I think white leftists tend to think more like you do, which is why I read this blog. I don't comment often - this is your community, after all. But it helps to open my eyes to how African-Americans really feel about the issues. Racism still exists in a virulent form. I watched the way African-Americans were systematically stripped from the voter rolls. As an ESL teacher, I am filled with horror at these ICE raids that terrorize undocumented immigrants in the Latino community. Racism is something I need work on in myself...the same way that some of us need to work on our homophobia or any other stupid thing we've been indoctrinated to believe. I actually think guilt is a poor motivater... I'll tell you, I wouldn't even be motivated to go to the polls if the only reason to vote was for a negative purpose. I believe that most white people got behind Obama because they were genuinely inspired and genuinely hoping for change.
Miranda
"eight years with this war-mongering, Constitution shredding moron"......the amazing thing is it was only eight, because it feels like eighty. I think Dubya aged us also.
I still can't believe it. I'm still finding myself in tears listening to / reading the news. And it's not just that he got elected, it's that he's already working on making this a better country; already making plans to begin treating the malignant aftereffects of the Bush crime family.
I am so proud of our next president. And I am proud of this country ~ for the first time in a very, very long time.
My sense of optimism about the future has returned, something I never expected.
Val
Here is a virtual tissue. :-) I feel the same. Amazing isn't it. I still can't believe it.
Miranda
The dream team of campaign staffing is on 60 minutes. Plouffe, Axelrod and Gibbs......
spirit_55z
Yes, I'm watching it. They look tired. It's s clear how Barack got elected. His team are saying that they had very few, if any discussions. Barack share his vision, and they helped him carry it out. VISION, FOCUS, EXECUTION!
President-Elect Barack Obama!
Miranda
Can you say LEADER?!?! Dayum......Barack...oh wait...where are my manners? PRESIDENT OBAMA had a message and a vision and their job was to carry it out and they did. It was just that simple. WOW.
President Obama is light years ahead of everybody else....he has to slow down just for the rest of the world to keep up 10 paces behind him.
spirit_55z
Umm, naw, Barack doesn't have to slow down. Back in the day, our pastor used to say: Are you with me? If you don't come along with me, l'm going all by myself." And we'd shout back: "We're wih you."
WE'RE WITH YOU PRESIDENT-ELECT BARCK OBAMA!
Miranda
I forget who, but someone (I think Val) posted a link to a website devoted to images of the black family ....anyone remember which thread or have the link?? Thanks!!
Val
Hi Miranda - LOL timing is perfect. Haven't been on JJP much the last few days (been playing catch up with household responsibilities and work as I neglected both since the Primaries). :-)
I still haven't had the chance to check out the site in any detail but again, heard about it on I think it was theTom Joyner morning show last week.
zackboston
thanks! i have a young friend who loves the song amen and there is such a great video of ebenezer baptist church singing it on election night there. . .
Obama's post-racial promise Barack Obama seduced whites with a vision of their racial innocence precisely to coerce them into acting out of a racial motivation.
msmartin
Steele has issues. The biggest one being he's a "HATER". Obama has been accepted simply because of who he is. Steele can't say the same.
rikyrah
Barack Obama made all the OPPOSITE choices of Steele and his ilk, and is now President-elect of the United States. Steele's having a breakdown.
msmartin
Yeah he is one sick m*)&a.
Justice58
Definitely!
Sepia
What Shelby Steele really means is this: "It should have been ME! I was supposed to be the favorite Negro! Waaaah!"
Justice58
Yep. Jealousy is so ugly!
spirit_55z
rikyrah, WTF?!!! I wasn't familiar with this dude before reading this article. This dude, is he on somehting? How does one coerce another into acting out of racial motivation?
This is vile and despicable garbage!!
msmartin
Spirit I haven't read any of his work, but I watched him discuss his book about Obama not being able to win on CSpan and later during an interview on PBS. I believe Steele is a sick man. He is the self appointed ambassador and conduit of sorts to explain to white America what's fucked up about black America and why which is usually through faults all their own in his opinion. I remember him telling a story about his white mother and the black neighborhood they lived in and how as bad as things were, it did not stop her from being active in the community (you know black mothers don't do that). On one hand he loathes the fact that he is black and on the other he says look at me I'm the best black.
I imagine many of his kind, the ones who had to shed any appearance of pride in blackness aresick at the thought that Obama embraced blackness (not just with words, but with action) without sacrificing quality and he is loved by many.
whiterosebuddy
Shelby is a dysfunctional unbalanced biracial child. He never resolved race issues within himself. So, he spends his life hating on his black half and all those who will listen to his demented views on race.
msmartin
Pretty much.
spirit_55z
Just as I thought, he's been refusing to take his antipsychotcs! :(((
It is my opinion that Shelby Steele has issues only he can come to grips with, if indeed he ever wants to. Unfortunately, he has a platform and audience all too eager to hear him stand up -- which he WILL do -- and proclaim concepts that alleviate them from even thinking about issues past their own world. Too bad. He's not a stupid man.
Justice58
What is wrong with him?
Miranda
This helped me to understand Steele's affliction better:
That is the article I read earlier. I also read articles by Cornel West and Robin Kelley. Of course, I wouldn't out them all in the same category. I respect the latter two.
rikyrah
Rhonda,
he has turned his back on his writings of the past 20 years. Steele has had a breakdown of sorts.
msmartin
What were his previous writings about.
rikyrah
everything that he's been writing about for the past 15 years, Obama represents that. and the minute Obama started to become successful, Steele flipped the script, and turned his back on his past 15 years' worth of writings.
People think I'm being funny, but I'm not. Barack Obama's success, after doing everything OPPOSITE of Steele
Working WITH poor Black people Marrying a VISIBLY Black woman Joining a self-respecting BLACK church
, is destroying whatever core Steele has left. He can't accept it. He can't.
If Steele hadn't of fed his family off of talking ABOUT Black people and denigrating them at every turn to whatever White audience that would listen, I'd ALMOST feel sorry for him.
msmartin
So I assume you mean self help, drive and determination. I thought I might have judged him harshly based on listening to him a couple of times, but since you said he's raised his family from the profits of denigration, I think not. I summed him up quickly.
rikyrah
Steele, like so many others of his ilk..
I'm trying to clean this up, but I can't do it.
He doesn't understand how someone can be Black, self-respecting, successful all at the same time. It's like him and HIS ilk are the only ones who are 'successful', and believe in self-help, and have determination. I'll be honest; I never understood how they tried to NOT SEE all the successful Black folk out there.
msmartin
Well if he considers hisself other or better than, I can see how he would need others to be less for his own self gratification.
I can't imagine who might be absorbing his philosophies. I imagine they're just as offensive to whites. He would have one believe that all interactions between the races are thought out , planned and staged; that blacks are forever readjusting. He gives no explanation for the way humans readjust for varying situations and scenarios.
spirit_55z
He's sick and someone needs to fill his 7 day pill dispenser and administer them as well.
goldenstar
What is fascinating is that his twin, Claude Steele, is a psychologist who specializes in racism/identity issues and behaviors. And, his work is fascinating and ongoing.
It's just unbelievable that they grew up in the same household....in Chicago!
