Number of Outstanding Ballots Grows To 81,000

The state Elections Division said Friday 81,000 votes remain to be counted, mostly early votes but also absentee and questioned ballots.

That may be enough to swing as many as six state legislative races, and the number of votes is making the U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Stevens and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich look increasingly close.

Stevens now leads by 3,257 votes out of 221,713.

Both Begich and House Minority Leader Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, issued press releases saying it was too soon to decide their races.

Begich is hoping early votes will trend Democratic and give him a victory.

The Mark Begich-Ted Stevens race remains too close to call, and word is we might have some new numbers soon. My good friend Ethan Berkowitz (we’ve been friends from long before either of us stumbled into politics) has an outside chance of closing his gap against Congressman Don Young, but the gap in that race is pretty substantial right now. And we have a roughly half dozen State House and Senate races with less than 200 vote differences that could change too.

Bush “adopted anti-intellectualism as administration policy, repeatedly rejecting expertise,” Kristof says. Obama, on the other hand, “exults in complexity.” That’s not to say intellectuals always have the right answers—compare George Washington, no egghead, to James Garfield, a fluent writer of Latin and Greek. But “as Mr. Obama goes to Washington, I’m hopeful that his fertile mind will set a new tone for our country,” Kristof writes.

Early into the Obama candidacy, 60 Minutes' Steve Kroft paid a visit to the family's Chicago home and was privy to some tuna salad-making (recipe below) in the kitchen. The conversation turned to other things the then-senator cooks well (Malia: "Chili and that's it"), and Obama defended himself: "The truth is, before I met Michelle I did quite a bit of cooking. I had an Indian roommate for a while, so I learned how to make Indian food. I grew up in Hawaii where there's a lot of Asian influence, so I learned how to cook Chinese food...also, the stuff I make is a little too spicy for these guys." When Obama asks his daughters what kind of food they like, they deliver a unanimous and resounding reply: "Cheese." "So," Obama continues, "it's not as if we've got real sophisticated palates in this household." Scroll down to see the video.

DEM BEGICH Could Still BEAT Ted Stevens

Although Ted Stevens currently holds a lead of approximately 3,200 votes in ballots counted to date in Alaska's senate contest, there is good reason to believe that the ballots yet to be counted -- the vast majority of which are early and absentee ballots -- will allow Mark Begich to mitigate his disadvantage with Stevens and quite possibly pull ahead of him.

The reasoning behind this is simple: some early ballots have been processed, and among those ballots Begich substantially leads Stevens. A tally of Alaska's 40 house districts as taken from Alaska's Division of Elections webpage suggests that Begich has won about 61% of the early ballots counted so far, as compared with 48% of ballots cast on Election Day itself.

I love the Sun-Times cover you posted. I was lucky to get copies early Wednesday morning.

However, I spent the better half of today trying to find today's collector's editions of both the Tribune and Suntimes (and Time magazine). No luck.

I am white, and I voted for Barack Obama because he INSPIRED ME in a way that neither McCain nor Bush ever could hope to (or even Hillary "obliterate 'em" Clinton, who I never could stand). Listen, we've just been through eight years with this war-mongering, Constitution shredding moron. Obama is a breath of fresh air following the Bush years. I expect he'll be a great president. I mean that genuinely and sincerely.

Someone once told me that the Black community is not monolithic. Neither are whites. We don't all think alike nor vote for a candidate for the same reasons. I don't fool myself that we are living in a post-racial world. Some whites believe this, but most progressive whites do not (just listen to Democracy Now). I think white leftists tend to think more like you do, which is why I read this blog. I don't comment often - this is your community, after all. But it helps to open my eyes to how African-Americans really feel about the issues. Racism still exists in a virulent form. I watched the way African-Americans were systematically stripped from the voter rolls. As an ESL teacher, I am filled with horror at these ICE raids that terrorize undocumented immigrants in the Latino community. Racism is something I need work on in myself...the same way that some of us need to work on our homophobia or any other stupid thing we've been indoctrinated to believe. I actually think guilt is a poor motivater... I'll tell you, I wouldn't even be motivated to go to the polls if the only reason to vote was for a negative purpose. I believe that most white people got behind Obama because they were genuinely inspired and genuinely hoping for change.

"eight years with this war-mongering, Constitution shredding moron"......the amazing thing is it was only eight, because it feels like eighty. I think Dubya aged us also.

I still can't believe it. I'm still finding myself in tears listening to / reading the news. And it's not just that he got elected, it's that he's already working on making this a better country; already making plans to begin treating the malignant aftereffects of the Bush crime family.

I am so proud of our next president. And I am proud of this country ~ for the first time in a very, very long time.

My sense of optimism about the future has returned, something I never expected.

Spirit I haven't read any of his work, but I watched him discuss his book about Obama not being able to win on CSpan and later during an interview on PBS. I believe Steele is a sick man. He is the self appointed ambassador and conduit of sorts to explain to white America what's fucked up about black America and why which is usually through faults all their own in his opinion. I remember him telling a story about his white mother and the black neighborhood they lived in and how as bad as things were, it did not stop her from being active in the community (you know black mothers don't do that). On one hand he loathes the fact that he is black and on the other he says look at me I'm the best black.

I imagine many of his kind, the ones who had to shed any appearance of pride in blackness aresick at the thought that Obama embraced blackness (not just with words, but with action) without sacrificing quality and he is loved by many.

Shelby is a dysfunctional unbalanced biracial child. He never resolved race issues within himself. So, he spends his life hating on his black half and all those who will listen to his demented views on race.

It is my opinion that Shelby Steele has issues only he can come to grips with, if indeed he ever wants to. Unfortunately, he has a platform and audience all too eager to hear him stand up -- which he WILL do -- and proclaim concepts that alleviate them from even thinking about issues past their own world. Too bad. He's not a stupid man.

Well if he considers hisself other or better than, I can see how he would need others to be less for his own self gratification.

I can't imagine who might be absorbing his philosophies. I imagine they're just as offensive to whites. He would have one believe that all interactions between the races are thought out , planned and staged; that blacks are forever readjusting. He gives no explanation for the way humans readjust for varying situations and scenarios.

He's sick and someone needs to fill his 7 day pill dispenser and administer them as well.

What is fascinating is that his twin, Claude Steele, is a psychologist who specializes in racism/identity issues and behaviors. And, his work is fascinating and ongoing.

It's just unbelievable that they grew up in the same household....in Chicago!

It's simple:

One accepted and embraced his African-American side (Claude).

The other (Shelby) is running away from his African-American side as fast and as hard as he can and not succeeding in getting away from it.
