I am starting to realize that I have almost no taste for … whatever it is, revenge? Deliberately engineered comeuppance? I think I have been like this all my life. Someone can be awful to me and I will remember all of it and bring it up if they are awful to me in the same/similar way again.

But if their actions in the now are ok, that is my focus in relating to them.

So I don't understand the desire for revenge, facing backward in time like that. I just literally don't feel that kind of desire.

I have no visceral comprehension of why people are so into this kind of thing… I mean, I have no visceral comprehension of what it actually functions to do.

(of course if Lieberman DOES bad stuff from here on, that's a different story to me.)

What I see is not about rocking or not rocking the boat or capitulation/non-capitulation.

The dividing line I see is time, as related to action.

From what I see, President-elect Obama is concerned with doing and generally unconcerned with symbolic gestures that will not primarily inform action in the present and future.

From what I see, his concern is what needs to be done to stop the torture from continuing.

I see this as a very practical perspective.

I guess … As a matter of “what to do” about the torture, I would prefer that the focus be on practical steps to end the violence and ensure that it does not continue to occur. And if there are other things to do, helping the people who have been tortured, however this nation can be of assistance in making up for that horror, I would be in favor of that too.

Punishing people? I myself personally don't actually care, as long as there are effective, immediate and practical steps to actually end the violence, and there visibly emerges the beginnings of a real foundation for preventing this — not just through fear of punishment, but through the (is it really possible?) emergence of actual humanity in this nation governing structures and dynamics.

But, fine: let's being all the detainees here, try them, find them innocent (cause those bad Americans hurt their feelings!), pay them reparations and let them stay here.
