An incredible final day of early voting in Georgia took place yesterday, where 227,851 people cast their votes. Although most expect the final percentage of black vote in the state to decline from what it currently is, incredibly the final day of early voting brought an increase, with nearly 37% of the Friday voters being African-American.

Nearly 2 million people have voted in Georgia so far, representing over 60% of the total 2004 electorate and over 3 times what the early and absentee vote consisted of in the prior Presidential election. Perhaps most incredibly, compared to 2004 levels, 80% of blacks have already gone to the polls, withstanding lines hours on end, to make sure their voices would be heard.

The rally was organized by the Somalian community. Over the last 10 years, EP, MN. has seen one of the largest Somalia immigrant populations in the U.S. I live in Eden praire. It is the most diverse cities in suburbia, MN.

Keith Ellison made history as the first African American from Minnesota to serve in the U.S. Congress. He also made history by becoming the first person of the Muslim faith in America to serve in Congress. This is the community that helped elect him.

What I loved about attending this rally was the organizer were Somali, the diversity of the candidates and hearing where they stood on the issues. They had translators too. These folks are in America, and must understand what is involved. Keith has been very instrumental in helping not only somali immigrants gain legal status but also Hmong people.

Representative Ellison's philosophy is one of “generosity and inclusiveness.” His roots as a community activist and his message of inclusivity through democratic participation resonates throughout the Fifth District. His priorities in Congress are: promoting peace, prosperity for working families, and promoting civil and human rights. It was so good to hear Keith tell the Somalia to vote the Deemocratic and he gave specific reasons why.

Ashwin Madia: 30 years old. He's an attorney, served in Iraq in the Marine Corp Parents from India. He was born in Boston. Running for Congress.

Al Franken: Jewish, former comedian, running against inccumbent Senator Norm Coleman.

R.T. Rybak: Mayor of Minneapolis, MN

Maria Rund: State Representative in my district. She's a Nurse Practictioner, and has worked tirelessly to assist Somali women.

All of these candidates walk the talk when it comes to helping immigrants intergrate into America, into communities.
