Interesting piece. With the 2008 presidential campaign finally wrapping up, I thought you might be interested in some light-hearted political fun. Here at Public Agenda we think that political movies have the potential to encourage public engagement, as many films explore intriguing social and political themes. That’s why Public Agenda is asking what your favorite political movies are! We’ve posted a list of our favorites at http://www.publicagenda.org/pages/our-favorite-... and we’re asking you to post yours at http://www.publicagenda.org/forum/election-2008....

Also, be sure to check out our non-partisan Voter’s Survival Kit at http://www.publicagenda.org/citizen/electionguides.

Wow, this is what's it's all about, isn't it??

First-Time North Carolina Voters Confused By Straight-Ticket Ballots
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kelly-nuxoll/firs...

The poll worker prompted him, "Are you voting straight ticket?"

"I ain't never voted before," Amel blurted.

Although I was past the line for electioneering, I jumped in and said that the poll worker was repeating what the Obama volunteer had said: one circle for president, and a separate circle if he wanted to vote straight Democrat.

"Awright," said Amel. "'Cause I'm definitely voting for Obama." Behind him, a few people in line chuckled, which cheered him up.

Hope's group disappeared inside, and while the volunteers waited, the head of the Durham Election Board strolled up and down the line in a head-to-toe Uncle Sam outfit. "Democracy is happening!" he sang. "Democracy is happening!"

In fifteen minutes, out came Amel and Malcom, both with their chests puffed out and their eyes bright. Hope, it turned out, had indeed made a mistake: she'd voted for Obama, then straight-ticket Democrat, then had meticulously filled in the bubbles for every other Democratic candidate. A poll worker assured here it would've been fine, but Hope asked for a fresh ballot because she wanted it to be perfect. When she emerged a full forty-five minutes later, she was sashaying.

"I was so nervous, but I did it," she said. She reminded me again of her birth certificate. "Today I voted for Obama," she said. "And tomorrow's my birthday!"

And that is why I didn't even bother to watch SNL---though from reading other's accounts, it seems McCain showed his usual humor that he is known for.

What is so disturbing to me is that he carries out such low-ball tactics on the campaign trail and then turns around in a venue like the dinner or SNL and transforms into something totally different.

I know that the negativity is leaving an imprint on him and he is showing almost multiple personalities at this point. Quite scary, IMHO.

I agree with you on 100% nickwah that they are not voting for their current situation but their aspired position. The only problem I see, is that for the vast majority of them, their situation has gotten worse under these policies not better. I just watched a video in which they had people in a pawn shop who are pawning their possessions for food and other necessities and at the same time they are saying Obama and Democrats wanted to raise their taxes and raising taxes and bring about socialism. People who have no health care seem more concerned with insurance companies, while not seeming to be able to afford to get sick.

That is what I do not understand. When you look over the last 30 years how the parties had helped the majority of Americans, these people are I am afraid to say are clueless.

Inequalities
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/27/magazine/27ww...

"The Census Bureau has tracked the economic fortunes of affluent, middle-class and poor American families for six decades. According to my analysis, these tabulations reveal a wide partisan disparity in income growth. The real incomes of middle-class families grew more than twice as fast under Democratic presidents as they did under Republican presidents. Even more remarkable, the real incomes of working-poor families (at the 20th percentile of the income distribution) grew six times as fast when Democrats held the White House. Only the incomes of affluent families were relatively impervious to partisan politics, growing robustly under Democrats and Republicans alike."

The vast disparity of wealth this country has seen over the last few years has primarily gone to those on the top. Just in that Bill Maher clip I posted these people are being mislead. Just like when they get upset over the issue of Estate Tax or what they like to label it as the Death Tax. Little do they know it only affects only estates of over $2 million for individuals and over $4 million for couples, but the Republicans have convinced them or mislead them that this affects them.

I agree with you 100%, it is just that I do not believe the facts bare their concerns out. I just do not believe what they aspire to, and have proven to improve our society as a whole.

Suprk, regarding how the Republicans have gotten people to vote for them, I have come to the conclusion that people aren't voting based on their current situation, they are voting for the lifestyle they are aspiring to. Also, I have come across some people who are more concerned about not helping out a particular group within our society, rather than seeing how certain policies can help them also. Just my opinion.

rikyrah: Another "PROUD 'GRANDPA' extols the greatness of THIS MOMENT!:

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008...
Obama's home has long produced black stars

CHICAGO - At age 19, South Side resident Conrad Cochran waited in line to cast his very first vote for William L. Dawson, a ground-breaking African-American politician from the neighborhood who was running for Congress. Forty-five years later, Cochran stood for more than an hour to vote for another exceptional politician who called the South Side home: Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor in 1983.

Now, at age 89, Cochran, can barely stand at all; the walker he needs to get around has a built-in seat. On Thursday, however, the retired postal worker was as excited as anyone inside Bronzeville's Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center to vote for Barack Obama, a transplanted son of the South Side. And it didn't matter that he had to wait in a three-hour-long line to do it.

"I've never seen nothing like this," said Cochran, who, because of his age, was escorted to the head of the line by poll workers. "It means change" that's been long in coming, "and now it's finally happening," he said.

The change Cochran referred to isn't from one administration to another, or from one set of policies to another: It's a deeper change that has allowed Chicago's large African-American community - the incubator of many black leaders - to become, for this moment at least, the center of all American politics.

Obama ran for the US Senate from Chicago, and he still lives on the South Side.

SKIP

Historians note that, beginning in the early 1900s, that area of Chicago became a destination for hundreds of thousands of former slaves and their descendants who moved to the Midwest, fleeing Jim Crow oppression and the grinding, hand-to-mouth poverty of the postwar South. Lured by the prospect of good jobs and a more tolerant racial climate, many of them boarded trains, hitched rides, or traveled however they could, following a northbound path that traced the Mississippi River.

SKIP

"I don't know if it makes it the hub of black politics. Hopefully, if we are successful - and even if we're not - at this point it's fair to say that Obama has helped shatter some old shibboleths and myths and barriers, and I think that will be important," he said.

"But he's not running to be the leader of the black community," Axelrod said. "He's running to be president of the United States."

WOW! THIS IS OUR MOMENT!!
You are going off the deep end. If you care to remember 2000 the elections are certified by the Sec of State anas are recall provisons. Each county is responsible for the machines, hours, no. of personnel to take care of it, et al. Broward and Dade were both Democrat as well. the Democrats have not been w/ out irresponsiblity up to this point.
It was the primary reason Obama consolidated ALL political party activity to his HQ in Chicago.

All of those little brown and white faces together just having a good time.....forget the evil witch!!

Exactly. In Georgia, Fulton County had 7 precincts available for early voting, but there are 255 polling places on election day.

GreenLadyHere, co-signing 100% with you.

Viewing the trolls that have hit this site in the last day, you can easily see how misinformed these people truly are. It is truly bizarre to watch people make the arguments they make about taxes and other issues when they are in economic crisis, and they are worried about higher taxes for the top 1%. I do not know how the Republicans have gotten these people to vote against their interests, but it is purely amazing in how they do this. They never use any facts to support these claims of taxes, and socialism, just Republican talking points.

I am not sure if you saw this, but Cornel West was on Bill Maher Friday night and broke it down precisely. He did this all while Amy Holmes was spitting out the same stupid talking points we have heard the last few years, and that these trolls have been spouting also.

Cornel West and Bill Maher
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NseMIWbdzhE

If you watch Holmes, she is spewing the same nonsense these trolls have been spewing, without a fact to back up what she says, and despite all the evidence that says they are wrong.
