The off the cuff Nancy Reagan comment was not helpful. The wingnuts' heads are exploding as we speak. Unfortunately, he will be scrutenized more than any other Pres has been - this was a distraction that he didn't need.
  • Admiral_Komack
    Word.
  • RobM
CP time we can do w/o that.
It was more embarrassing the idiot questions they asked him: Would you publicly disagree w/ the President over matters of policy now that you are President elect? WTF
What part of "We have an elected government and until Jan 20th I am not that government" do they not understand?
It is so apparent that they do not smell their own s@#$?

    Obama isn't black

I don't get it. I mean, am I the only person in the world who's noticed that Barack Obama isn't black? He's bi-racial. I don't see why his election has prompted such an orgy of self-congratulation in America. (For an example, see Anne Applebaum’s piece on the front of today’s Telegraph.) How can the election of a light-skinned man of colour assuage the guilt white Americans feel about slavery? Slaves were black. Barack Obama isn't descended from slaves. He was born in Hawaii and raised by two white people. He looks like a skinny white guy with a tan. If America had elected a guy who looked like Robert Mugabe to become President, then I'd be impressed. But this guy? My Jewish father-in-law spends a week in the sun, he goes darker than Obama. I married his daughter. Does that make me a non-racist?

If this sounds a bit begrudging, I don’t mean it to. Obviously, electing Obama is a step in the right direction. Americans deserve approximately half the praise they’ve been heaping on themselves because, after all, Obama is half-African-American. But nearly all the so-called “black” people that now enjoy high-profile positions in America -- Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Tiger Woods, Tyra Banks, Beyonce -- are at the light-skinned end of the spectrum. It is almost as if America lined up every citizen with any African-American blood, putting the darkest at one end and the lightest at the other, and said to all the people on the far right-hand-side, “Okay, you can sit at the front of the bus, but the rest of you, stay in the back.”

If I was a caramel-coloured American, I’d certainly be pleased that Obama had been elected. It proves that white people are prepared to embrace light-skinned men of colour. But I would probably know that already. If I was a dark-skinned American, on the other hand, I’m not sure I’d take much comfort from this. It would simply confirm something I have long known, namely, that the extent to which African-Americans are the victims of racist discrimination in America depends, to a very large extent, on how dark-skinned they are. White Americans have finally come around to the idea of having a coffee-coloured President. Great. But when are they going to stop discriminating against people who are actually black?
  • Admiral_Komack
If you and Toby Young want to agonize over this, knock yourselves out.

As for myself, I say President-Elect Barack Obama is BLACK!

    He's BLACK, don't you understand! :-)
  • Agett
What the helll is wrong with you! Last time I checked a majority of African Americans have some European or Native American ancestry. The Black community has defined itself as being comprised of people of African descent period. Like my English high school teacher said if you have a bit of african in you, you are BLACK.

I think that the embrace of lightskinned black people has a place and time for discussion but not here. Clearly, people in the U.S. both black and white render their judgement of blackness on how black an individual looks, not necessarily their ethnic history. Here's an example - Vanessa Williams is not biracial. Lenny Kravitz is. Bow Wow is not biracial, Halle Berry is. Yet all of the above consider and describe themselves as black.
I have nieces and cousins who are not biracial who are lighter than Obama. Also, if you've ever seen Obama in person, he's shades darker in real life than he is on the screen. Most African-Americans in the U.S. have biracial heritage so it's pretty fair to say most of us could claim biracial at some point in our ancestry. But at the end of the day, he appears to live and identify as a Black American man with both white and African roots. And that's how people both black and white responded to him. Clearly racism is alive and well when white people who can see he was entirely raised by white folks and continue to harbor racist notions about the color of his skin. That definitely tells you a lot about race relations in America. But at the end of the day, we'll embrace him as a black man and that's really that. But truly, it's another conversation for another day for another thread. Right now, we'd like to bask in the moment and see what the brother's going to do with the mess he's faced with. And yeah, I said and mean "brother."
    Thank you.
  • rorysmomma
They picked the smartest guy. Trust me if he was a dumb black man, it wouldn't have happened. Period. End of Discussion.
  • Me
I agree obama was an exceptional candidate but I feel the one drop rule demeans black people.
  • Me
I'll tell you somethin you'll be able to see when black people have high collective self-esteem, when they stop with the one drop slave master ideology.

What's wrong with calling light skinned "blacks" mixed race that's what they are that's why they have light skin! I like and agree with Rev. Wright but I don't consider him black he's obviously mixed race and that's what he should be called.

What's wrong with calling Obama the first Biracial President since that's what he is are we that desperate for a symbol of success that we appropriate the son of a white woman?
  • rorysmomma
Of course it is demeaning. The irony is that he is blacker than I am, he just doesn't look it.
  • Miranda
Let's see...which is more stupid....the commentary itself....or someone actually copying and pasting it.......(sigh) too close to call.
  • Me
Sigh all you want but I'm sick of tired of people telling me that people with pink cheeks and red ears are black!
  • Miranda
    You're a blithering sel-hating idiot.
  • posey
All of the sudden we have an African American President and now you and others like you want to redefine what should be considered black? Why? So it can soften the blow....
  • posey
Stop pretending you wrote this. Plagiarism is not cool. This article was written by Toby Young for the Spectator.

Answer this. How black is black? Obama has stronger African ties than my husband who is 5 shades darker. Which one is more "black"? I have Latino friends that are much darker than Obama? Are they more black? Please tell me when bi-racial became a race?
  • Me
I guess you missed the link I posted with the copy and paste tough guy.

Your husband is black Obama isn't.

Latinos are not black Biracial people are a combination of "races".
  • posey
So based on your "argument" our children who are much lighter than Obama are not black? Even though Latinos are are combination of "races" they are not Bi-Racial? You make no sense at all.
  • Me
If they are lighter than Obama they are not black. I never said latinos were not biracial.
  • posey
We are not white , so my kids are not black? what are they then ? Funny, because when they were called n**gers, that person did not consider them "not black".
You really have no idea what you are talking about. Obama is our First African American President.

    DEAL WITH IT.

but a brother did look tired...he looked like they told him some shit now that he can get all the intel that make him think damn, what did i just get into...but he was steady and funny at the presser....

    OBAMA ADDRESSES BLACK FOLK DIRECTLY

    By. Hazel Trice Edney
    NNPA Editor-in-Chief

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – In perhaps the most candid direct message to Black people since his Democratic nomination, then Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, on election eve Monday, credited Black voters for his historic political rise, promising to make a difference in their lives if elected.

“Everyone under the sound of my voice understands the struggles we face. Everyone understands the fierce urgency of now. You all know what’s at stake in this election,” Obama said in a live telephone conference with Black leaders Monday morning.

The “listen only” call included a spectrum of speakers, including civil rights icon Rev. Joseph Lowery, Oprah Winfrey, Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Democratic Whip Jim Clyburn.

Obama listed a string of issues disparately faced by African-Americans, including the struggle to recruit good teachers and, the struggle against under-funded schools, double digit jobless rates and having to work two and three jobs to make ends meet.

“I mention these issues because this community, our community, the African-American community, during these challenging times, suffers more than most in this country,” he said. “Double digit inflation, double digit unemployment, stagnant wages, our kids are more likely to drop out, more likely to be in jail, more likely to die. We’re going to have to do better. And if we continue the momentum we’ve seen across this country over the last several weeks, we can do better.”
  • Miranda
Anybody watching CNN??? Dammit, I'm so mad I can't remember his name just that quick. Why is this clown asking everyone if President Obama seemed "confident" and self-assured as a President and over-analyzing his every physical move??

Miranda: RICK SANCHEZ. I use ta DIS-like him! BUT, in the end, he supported Mr. President-Elect! :>) :>) Sounds nice - HUH??? :>)
  • Miranda

  • Booky
Poor Candy Cowley. What was her question anyway?

For real though, my problem with Candy Cowley is that she is always trying to tell somebody what to think or tell someone what President elect Obama is thinking like she's a mind reader or something.
  • GreenLadyHere
    Booky: Hey! :>) Co-sign! :>)

Annnnd, I'm believin' she still doesn't like that billary "LOST!" HAH!

  • rikyrah
    She's a HATER.

    HATER.

    She doesn't even hide it.
  • Justice58
Didn't Candy ask about intelligence briefings? Umm...Gasp!
  • parker404
And that's why he told Candy he was "going to skip" part of her question.
  • GreenLadyHere
Justice58: Candy REALLY hasn't gotten over billary's loss! - YET!!!

Annnnnd, NOTE: Mr. President-Elect CAN skip your question!! BWA-HA-HA-HA!!!
  • soulsistah02
"For those who didn't vote for me...I will be your President, too." I think we all know what Obama meant by that.
  • GreenLadyHere
    soulsistah02: TRUE DAT!! :>) :>)
