Obama to call for "cuts and sacrifices"

President-elect Obama said as he announced his economic team that he plans to follow that up with remarks on Tuesday about "cuts and sacrifices" the nation will need to make in the days ahead. He said that in addition to spending to get the economy going, he wants to "reform how business is done in Washington, and how the budgeting process works, how projects are done, so that we have a path towards a sustainable and responsible budget scenario down the line."

President Bush has been criticized for not asking the American people to make specific sacrifices, and Obama suggested in remarks to reporters at a Chicago hotel that he will have some frank talk for tough times as part of what his team is calling a "reform agenda."

"Short term, we've got to focus on boosting the economy and creating 2.5 million jobs," Obama said. "But part and parcel of that is a plan for a sustainable fiscal situation long term, and that's going to require some reforms in Washington. And I'm going to be discussing that more tomorrow."

Chicago businesswoman Desiree Rogers will be named to the position of White House social secretary, a source in President-elect Barack Obama's transition office said Sunday.

Rogers, 49, is a close friend of the Obama family and worked on the fundraising team for the campaign. She has been a fixture on Chicago's social and not-for-profit scene for years.

Last summer, she left her job as president of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas to create a financial social networking program at Allstate Insurance Co.

She would be the first African-American to serve in a position that is responsible for working with the first lady on White House functions and ceremonies.

Rogers, who studied at Wellesley College and later earned an MBA from Harvard, was once married to Chicagoan John Rogers, Ariel Capital Management chief and another close Obama friend and fundraiser.


She's from New Orleans. She married ' Well'. John Rogers is 'Our Kind of People' well. And, yes, she totally has been a fixture on the Black Social Scene of Chicago for years.

That stuff about both of their genitalia was and should be off-limits...it is not just racist but raunchy as well. I think it was awful that those men did not have enough respect for women period to understand why that was off-limits...it was nothing but locker room humor.

I dread the negative stereotype humor that is going to be on TV.,,,,I was not even cool about the 'rims on AirForceOne" no one ever said anything of that sort about Cowboy Bush, having longhorns on AirForce One.

The reason is that his 'cowboy culture' was simply not a source for ridicule whereas darn near everything about blacks that is stereotypical is not only negative but typically derisive and meant to ridicule and demean blacks as a group.

Why did Jack have to go to Africa for "redemption?" That the default place to go cleanse your soul?

I loved it! It is a tv show but it's nice to put a focus on the conflicts going on in African nations, the child soliders, the US gov't involvement and apathy. At least people who don't know anything about this will be exposed to it. Yes some parts were annoying and you have to suspend belief that Jack could break someone's neck so easily - but come on we know that's fake.

In an attempt to not turn this into a referendum on Rwanda (or Darfur, for that matter):

I understand why we didn't get involved in those conflicts...so to see 24 take this angle when (for all purposes) it's been pretty right leaning is a little odd.

Then too, I'm hoping the actual "story" is the American involvement, and that the coup is just an effect of that.

Or the Congo where people are in serious danger right now. No he'll be back in the US, the President's son will be killed and like I said Tony Almeda is alive. I had already read spoilers and speculations but then they scrapped last season due to the writers strike. They had already filmed 8 episodes more than a year ago. I want to be surprised with the rest of the audience so we'll see what happens.

Yeah, I've made a point to try and forget most of the stuff I read about the season before the strike.

Of course, now you can't avoid it.

That strike has come to bite a lot of shows in the ass. Some that were doing really well before it have since been cancelled (Pushing Daisies comes to mind). 24's got to step its game up a bit; last season wasn't that great anyway.

For the last few years, 24 has been my favorite show behind the Wire and Sopranos. I enjoyed last night's movie. 24 requires a suspension of reality, so I try not to over analyze it. If I did, I would have stopped watching after the first episode.

I enjoy overanalyzing it; looking for the parallels between the show and and reality.

Bad thing is, I know how this is gonna end (or at least I think I do), and I'm already somewhat down about that. So just seeing the whole setup didn't really enthuse me a whole bunch.

Plus, I don't know how Jack is going to be able to operate inside the law (think he's with the FBI now, cause CTU's disbanded...which should've been brought out last night!!), when his very existance is supposed to be outside (or at least on the edge of) the law.

Hey D! I was looking for somebody to fill me in and Spirit_55z mentioned that you were a fan. I had to give up since I missed the first 30 minutes. What was Jack doing in Africa? I did catch the scene with the guy holding his foot over a land mine - was it? I'm guessing that "foolishness" means you weren't impressed...

I'm gonna be honest: if you saw "Hotel Rwanda," then you know the story (only toss in a few more explosions). That's the background for the season.

Short version: Jack was in Africa working at an American school for orphans(?). A local warlord starts snatching up kids to be soldiers in his "army," (that some Americans are backing financially) and Jack tries to lead them to safety. He gets them to the US Embassy, but has to surrender himself (the Senate issued a subpoena(sp) for him that he'd been running from) to get the kids inside the embassy and on a flight out.

So the season will start with Jack being questioned in front of a Senate committee. Guess they couldn't get Bush, so they got Bauer instead (okay, had to throw that in there).

Female president this time around, though what happened to Wayne Palmer isn't exactly clear (don't know if he died or not, but Noah Daniels finished out his term and lost the election).

No, I wasn't impressed. Have to give it the benefit of the doubt, as the movie is supposed to bridge last season to this one (though it didn't do a good job of that).

This is really helpful - thanks! I will try to hang in there when the full season returns, if only because the new shows are so BAD this year. There's nothing catching my interest these days (except maybe South Park and 30 Rock) and I need a good drama to get into. And with The Wire gone, I'm missing all that gratuitous violence...

I got into Lost. I caught up on all 4 seasons online at abc.com and I am HOOKED. Feening for Jan when it comes back!

Oh yes, I'm a big fan of Lost too. It's been so long, I had almost forgotten!

Somehow, I don't see this year being that violent. I think it's gonna be really tamed down (which does detract from the show).

I wanted to highlight the achievement of an African-American author which occurred last wednesday.


Annette Gordon-Reed of New York Wednesday night won the 2008 National Book Award for nonfiction, for a history of a slave family owned by Thomas Jefferson. The author of "The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family" is the first African-American woman to win the award for nonfiction.

Gordon-Reed, professor of law at New York University and of history at Rutgers, tells the full Hemings story, from the family's origins in 17th-century Virginia until its members were sold after Jefferson's death. She is the author of a previous book about the slave woman with whom Jefferson is believed to have fathered a child.

They have a very extensive and distinguished family organization. I have actually read a couple of books and many articles about this subject. Katy Couric gave a very biased and disrespectful interview to one of the family leaders and I have not watched her from that day to this. The white Jeffersons (how many of those have you ever met?) do not want to submit to DNA testing. They continue to postula that the children were fathered by one of Thomas Jefferson's nephews, even with all the evidence of them (Sally Hemmings & Jefferson) living rather openly as husband and wife. I have also been to Monticello where I have seen the slave document listing Sally & her children. I hope they can talk one of them into giving up the DNA. Otherwise they need to do like the police do and have them drink off of a styrofoam cup. After that they need to sue for part of the estate.

And what about Washingtons? How many white Washingtons have you ever met? Why is it that there are so few white Washingtons? One theory I've heard is that the Washintons fathered so many children with slaves that the white family members were embarassed and changed their names.

I have met white Washingtons before.

Katie Couric is from Virginia and went to UVa and many "real Virginians" take great offense at the Hemmings family trying to push up on the Jefferson descendants. One of Hillary's stans who was trying to block Obama from getting the nomination is married to a Jefferson descendant and impersonated a black woman online to infiltrate a Hemmings family web forum to find out their plans and report back to the white Jeffersons.

There's a faction of the white Jeffersons who feel like "Hey, let them join with us" and then there's the faction that wants to shut the Hemmings down. Being that Katie Couric is a) from Va (albeit fake VA) and b) went to Mr. Jefferson's University, that's probably where her bias came from.

Well the historical drama Sally Hemings written by Barbara Chase-Riboud started this in 1979 way before the DNA evidence came out.

1) All the decision makers - senior executives - of these vulnerable companies who have been rescued, or are asking to be rescued, still have their jobs. I have heard talk of limiting executive compensation, dividend payout but no restructuring of the mnagement team.

2)What will Obama do when cabinet members or party officials or even someone from the opposing party step out of line? Continue to kill 'em with kindness? "Here Joe have another cookie? You too, Mitch." If that's his style, wonderful, but at some point he's gonna have to lace the cookies with some cyanide(figuratively). Or, are people gonna crap all over him because they don't expect any payback, 'cause he's such a warm and fuzzy guy? God!

MSNBC is talking about this now interviewing the writer of a Newsweek article about Michelle Obama and the diversity of the White House.

Not show if the writer has any input on the cover, but I thought they could have used a more recent and flattering photo of Michelle. I suppose they were aiming for irony that the article is about how Michelle can/will undo the stereotypes of Black women while they photo could easily be perceived as the image of an angry black woman.

Also, I didn't appreciate Norah O'Donnell highlighting Prime Minister's Brown's advice to Michelle. Michelle is not neophyte to the world of a political spouse. She's been doing this a long, long time and well understands the demands and sacrifices.

Of course I've proud to see each of these appointments.....but I gotta be honest. I have a extra special bit of pride for Desiree as the White House Social Secretary...the hoity-toity social secretary?!?! OH I LOVE IT!

Hmm... there's a curious subtext going on in this article. Are they questioning his commitment as a churchgoer? Or his so-called celebrity status (because he doesn't want to disrupt other congregants)? Another excuse to bring up Rev. Wright? It's not exactly a slow news day, so what's the point?

Also, I think it's a way to bait Obama into going to church...so they can see which one he goes to and talk about that. So they can investigate that church and talk about them.

I would suggest that all Washington DC area churches with predominately black churches pull their videotapes of their sermons for the next 6 months and "scrub" them if necessary.

Well, that rules out my old church in DC.

That's a good idea (re. the church tapes) people (i.e. the press) are licking their chops over which church the Obama's are going to go to especially considering that it's a high possibility that it may be a black one.

And if it is a black one he will get grief over why he and his family are going to a black church. Then CNN will do a series called "Black Church in America" to help America understand the hows and whys of the black church. Hosted by DL Hughley, of course.

I agree with all the comments, but I think this one resonates the most. They can't wait for the Obamas to pick a church for exactly this reason! Everything about the preacher, the people who attend, the newsletters... will be under ridiculous scrutiny. Until then, we are going to get these no-news articles. I hope the Obamas keep them waiting. Or sneak in a new minister like they did with his barber, LOL.

If I were Obama, I'd take one of the 132 rooms in the White House and build my own damned tabernacle and rotate preachers to come in and bring The Word on Sunday Mornings.

These people should remember that right after the Rev. Wright mess, around Easter I think, PE Obama and his family were in Hawaii and they couldn't go to church but he told the press that he and his family had a little church service at home - reading the Bible and saying prayers. Given the security situation and the fact they do not have a home church right now, i would bet that they have been worshipping in a similarly, non-traditional way.

Trouble is, that the list of scumbags and jailbirds Bush could free in time for turkey dinner (or at least Valentine's Day) is short...the Administration didn't put away too many najoe securities or banking defrauders (they just got the TARP),, polluters (they ran the Interior Dept) or even drug dealers with political connections (they supplied the Oval Office). So who is left--Gitmo prisoners? Ted Stevens? Scooter Libby's already had his sentence commuted. Sad. Sad as Larry Summers being on he team. he'll have plenty of candied sweets come Thursday...

But again, I suppose would should be thankful as we sit, eat and pray, that we "won." Let's us keep one squinted eye on the turkey leg, lest somebody at the table tear it off and hide it while grace is said. That went for Bush. That goes for the new Administration and Congress.
