Does anyone have a sock? A cork? A bar of soap, even? Because Sarah Palin will simply not. stop. talking. And I, for one, am willing to try anything that works. For some reason, her siren song of folksiness, labyrinthine sentence structure and downright refusal to be silenced have come together to generate some kind of perfect media storm.

The seamless ease with which Palin bounces back and forth between seemingly opposite and incompatible statements is mesmerizing….or just plain mind-numbing depending on your perspective. It’s the classic example of what’s known in psychology as the “double bind.”

Examples of a psychological double-bind are the mother who says “I love you”, while simultaneously recoiling from a hug in digust, or the father who says “I’m so proud of you, you didn’t screw up again!” The victims of a double bind get two simultaneous and conflicting messages. The feeling we get when we witness, or are victims of a double-bind is visceral. Our senses are telling us two different things. Our mind is in disharmony. Both our gut and our brain tell us there is something very very wrong.

I present for you a case study - Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, ex-VP candidate and double binder extraordinaire. See if you can pick it out of the following clip. It’s right in the beginning. So what happens to those who are continuously subjected to the double bind? If it’s coming from parents, or someone in a position of power, or someone from whom you cannot get away, the results can be damaging, especially for children. Fortunately for most of the country, Sarah Palin is not someone who wields power, and she is not their parent or our spouse, and they can get away from her with a click of the remote. So my advice from Alaska to the rest of the country is, grab your children and run. Or just push mute.

I live in Oakland CA and we already have lots of beautiful Obama on black tee shirt expression here. Everybody was wearing them on Saturday, too. Unusually warm summer-like weather so no jackets to cover up the images. Lots of folks have Barack AND Michelle tee shirts; I like those the best. The pride and happiness just make me smile.

In the Middle East when I was growing up, all through the 1970s, you saw prayer carpets, machine made, with JFK, RFK and Martin. Weird because JFK & RFK were not very good for the Arabs, especially Palestinians. Whatever. I assume we are going to see prayer carpets with Obama pretty soon. No I don't want to see him up there with Malcolm and Martin, our martyrs. I prefer to see him with Michelle - alive, not memorialized.

Late last week someone posted a link to an audio parody of "Brick House" called "Barack's House" and I thought it was quite funny. However, a friend pointed out to me this morning that the guy who runs the site - who I'm pretty sure is white - has been getting hate mail and accused of being racist, so he took the post down. This raises a number of questions for me, especially after hearing comedians and editorial cartoonists joke about how challenging it is to poke fun at Obama (he's too cool, not really all that funny looking - except the ears - and, of course, people don't want to be accused of being a bigot). But in my opinion, I think people should be allowed to lampoon and satirize Obama to their heart's content, just as they would any president. Should he be treated with kid's gloves? He has always expected equal treatment, so why should this be any different? It also seems to me that if accusations of racism get thrown around unnecessarily, then the very real criticisms of racist ignorance and hatred will lose their potency.

In any case, I'd love to hear what folks think, especially those who remember the lyrics from "Barack's House." I honestly didn't think it was inappropriate or insensitive.

This was a problem that a lot of Obama's detractors ran into as well...being called "racists" for suggesting that anything was out of line with his policies.

Unfortunately, I see it getting worse before it gets better. Now that he has the job, he is well deserving of everything that comes with the job. In this case, the joking and criticism should not be spared just because he's black (no one voted for him for that reason (right?!?!), so why should he expect quarter for it?).

That doesn't grant carte blanche, though...as there's only so many "fried chicken at the White House" jokes you can take before it does take on a racial tinge (and before they all stop being funny).

And I'd love to see the lyrics to that song....if anyone runs across them.

The problem is many of the criticisms of Obama are in fact, based in racism and would never be brought up if his dad was white and he was named "Barry O'Neill."

Questioning Obama on his attendance at Jeremiah Wright's church: not racist.

Continuing to question Obama about Louis Farrakhan when both men have said they don't know each other and don't associate with each other = racist.

Saying that you won't vote for Obama because you believe in small government and believe the Republicans can deliver that best (lol) = not racist.

Saying "I don't appreciate feeling like I'm a racist because I don't want to vote for Obama" = you're probably racist. Otherwise, why bring it up?

Having a parody of Obama where he's EXTRA straight-laced and nerdy and dorky = not racist.

Having a parody of a parody of Obama holding his nutz, dressed in saggy pants, crip walking in the White House (decorated in Red, Black & Green with pictures of MLK, Malcolm X and Ludacris on the walls while Michelle walks in with a housecoat and pink Goody rollers counting out food stamps -- remember, a parody of a parody) = not racist.

Suggesting that Obama is a drug dealer, a street thug, a black bogeyman that whites everywhere need to be afraid of when the man is about as physically threatening as a cone of cotton candy = racist.

You can joke on the Obamas and it not be racist. You can criticize the Obamas and it not be racist. The problem with many white folks is their criticism STEMS from racism.

I'd say "some," but not "many."

I think that the problem is (and this consistently gets me in trouble) that some (again, not all) of Obama's staunchest supporters find it easier to throw the "racist!!" flag than to actually discuss how a detractor came to a certain conclusion, or to just laugh at a joke. Throw that label around enough, and eventually people will be scared to challenge you.

People were called racist over the Rev. Wright flap (I was one of them, and I'm still trying to figure out how that works). And how many people thought the New Yorker cover was racist when it first came out?

That's because many of the people being challenged are in fact racist or saying racist stuff and they a) don't realize they are being racist or b) don't want to accept the fact THEY are being racist.

The Rev. Wright flap was racist because people were not only questioning why Obama sat there but they questioned why he was going to a black church in the first place BUT they never questioned Hagee's church and they never caught the vapors over what Falwell and Robertson said, either. "Conservative' chat show hosts were saying "the black church" should be investigated and questioning why there was a black church to begin with. O'Reilly sicced his producer to ambush Father Pfleger, but he never sent somebody after Hagee or Robertson. Why is that?

The New Yorker cover was racist because they were projecting their fears about black people onto Michelle Obama, having her with the Angela Davis fro and AK-47 and camoflage gear when what she said was not nearly as inflammatory as what they projected her to feel. And we have nerve to wonder why gun sales have shot up since Obama's election? It ain't because they're afraid Obama will overturn the 2nd amendment on Jan. 20, my friend [/johnmccain]

On Wright...don't know. I never saw a racial angle; I just saw a man essentially denouncing the US. Black, white, or whatever, there's no place for that. Did Hagee ever say anything on the order of "God d--n America"?

I saw the stereotypes in the New Yorker cover, but took it for what it was: satire. Some people have an odd sense of humor.

What upsets me more than anything is how whenever someone says/does something that's questionable, the other sides feels they have to do the same "in response." For every objectionable joke/writing/sketch about Obama, there was an equal response from his supporters about McCain....even at times when a response wasn't needed, required, or strategically smart.

And I haven't brought any guns...yet. ;)

D, did you ever hear the entire Jeremiah Wright sermon?

I have; in fact, I sat at a church service in Arlington two years ago when he preached it. Trust me, Fox played the clips of him saying "God....Damned America" and not in the context set forth by Sean Klannity.

I still say if Obama challenged Klannity to attend services at Trinity, he could have cleared up this mess and backed Klannity into a corner with no way out except to admit he was wrong about both Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama.

Nope. Someone gave me a printed transcript of it a couple weeks after the story broke.

If it's not what it sounded like, I'll admit that I was wrong about that aspect of Rev. Wright (though there's still a couple other issues).

You really should read or listen to it before you use it as a basis of an argument.

I have to get the visceral images of it out of my mind. Reading it pissed me off, so I have to watch it with an open mind. Maybe the mrs will be down for it.

Which is why it's better to either watch a video of him preaching that sermon, or being there in person like I was - a printed transcript cannot fully convey the context that sermon was given and allowed for it to be blown out of proportion the way Klannity wanted it.

Falwell and Robertson said that the US deserved 9/11 because of gays and Americans' behavior. Where was the fire on that?

And if anyone had looked at the ENTIRE sermon, not the 10 sec. clip, they would have seen that Rev. Wright was not "damning America" or saying that America deserved what it got...he was preaching we should pump our brakes, slow down and not be quick to anger.

What upsets me is that when McCain f'd up, the press would blow up a story about Obama to make it seem like they were being fair and balanced. Oh, people at McCain rallies are screaming NIGGER and KILL HIM and OFF WITH HIS HEAD? Well, the Obama people are doing the same thing! They're singing AINT NO STOPPING US NOW and break dancing at his rallies!

The comparison is always there just because they can't be 'wrong'. For example: if one man beats another, rolls over him with a car, then lands an air plane on him. The victim is still wrong for having gotten up because then they're going 'back and forth'. Throughout history their logic has always been like this. Extreme and dead wrong.

It's not the same thing, that's the point. The media scratched and clawed very hard to say that the people attending Obama's rallies were doing the exact same thing the people at McCain's rallies were doing. They weren't but because the media didn't want to be accused of being "in the tank" for Obama they came up with ridiculous comparisons.

The MSM would report on the people foaming at the mouth at the Palin hate rallies and then try to say with a straight face that Obama's rallies were the same way. Yeah, um, people singing AINT NO STOPPING US NOW is exactly the same as people foaming at the mouth about treason and killing. Ok.

I feel like if they really wanted to play neutral, which was never a concern for them when the chips were stacked again PE Obama, then they would have done better to never mention the threats.

You know just as well as I do that, post 9/11, you can't make a statement like that-whether Wright was actually damning America or not-and not expect to catch hell if/when it becomes public. That goes for anyone, regardless of where their seat on the aisle is.

And we're not going to talk about what the media did to seem "fair and balanced." Cause, obviously, they were nothing of the sort.

Did they have Falwell and Robertson on constant loop after they made those statements? Did they suggest their congregations agreed with them and should be deported?

Or did they shrug and say "those crazy guys, ya never know what'll come out of their mouths?"

The underlying assumption behind the Rev. Wright / Whitey Tape / Farrakhan / New Yorker / Terrorist Fist Bump / Palling Around with Terr'ists memes is that it ASSUMES that black people

a) Are not American

b) all hate white people

c) Americans are white, so if you hate white people, you hate America.

When you have these 3 assumptions as part of your belief system, your criticisms of Obama or any other black person are automatically going to come out of a base of racism. I actually have no problem with that if the person owns their racism, but the problem is too many people hide their racism not because of what other people might think but because they don't want to think it of themselves.

Town, they buried any clips of Robertson or Falwell blaming gays for 9/11, until their own church members told them they went too far with that shyt.

Additionally, you never really hear how Larry Flynt punked Falwell in a court of law and upheld the 1st Amendment, either.

Gingrich Says Palin Will NOT Be In The Future GOP LEADER

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the front runner for the GOP presidential nomination.

Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.

But Gingrich, an architect of the Republican revolution of 1994, took Palin down a notch, asserting that she would not become the party’s leader, as some have predicted.

“I think that she is going to be a significant player,” said Gingrich during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation”. “But she’s going to be one of 20 or 30 significant players. She’s not going to be the de facto leader.”

Since the defeat of the GOP ticket, Palin has pursued an aggressive media strategy, scheduling a full slate of interviews to keep her face on television.

CNN aired a lengthy, wide-ranging interview between Wolf Blitzer and Palin on Sunday. Palin has also sat down for interviews with CNN’s Larry King, Fox New’s Greta Van Susteren, and invited Matt Lauer of the “Today Show” to Wasilla for dinner.

Palin refused to rule out a presidential bid in 2012 during her interview with Blitzer, which aired on CNN’s “Late Edition.”

Some political analysts, citing her high name identification and loyal following among the base, say that Palin will be a frontrunner for the GOP nomination in 2012.

Palin dominated media coverage at the Republican Governors Association meeting in Miami last week. She grabbed the spotlight at a Thursday press conference, answering reporters’ questions while a dozen other GOP governors stood awkwardly behind her on stage.

Crowds of reporters and cameras chased Palin in Miami while ignoring more experienced colleagues from other states.

But Gingrich on Sunday sought to divert some media attention away from Palin and to other governors such as Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and Utah Gov. John Huntsman (R).

“She’s going to be a much bigger story in the short run,” said Gingrich, explaining Palin’s higher media profile compared to other GOP governors. “But, I think, as she goes back to being governor and as she works in Alaska, you’re going to see a group of governors emerge, not just Sarah Palin.”

CHICAGO — On the day he formally stepped down as Illinois' junior senator, President-elect Barack Obama released an open letter to state residents, saying they had taught him lessons he would draw on during his presidency.

Obama, whose resignation after nearly four years in the Senate was a formality in the wake of his Nov. 4 election victory, thanked Illinois residents in a nostalgic letter published in Sunday newspapers throughout the state.

"I will never forget, and will forever be grateful, to the men and women of this great state who made my life in public service possible," Obama wrote.

The education he received in Illinois, he added, has prepared him for the White House job he'll have beginning Jan. 20.

That schooling began on the South Side of Chicago, where Obama said he saw how factory workers lost hope when their way of life vanished with the closing of steel mills. Obama said he struggled to try and bring neighborhoods back _ one block at a time.

"In the process I received the best education I ever had," he said.

Obama said the experience led him to organize a voter registration project, become an attorney and run for the Illinois state senate.

In Springfield, Obama said, he saw farmers, teachers, businessmen and laborers from urban and rural communities fight to get a seat at the same table.

"It was there that I learned to disagree without being disagreeable; to seek compromise while holding fast to those principles that can never be compromised; and to always assume the best in people instead of the worst," he wrote.

Obama said he saw then how the state's residents were both diverse and unified, and how they met problems with a spirit of strength and courage. That spirit made Obama believe America can overcome its many problems, he wrote.

Obama closed by quoting words spoken by the last president from Illinois nearly 150 years ago. Abraham Lincoln said he owed everything to the people of the state.

"Today, I feel the same, and like Lincoln, I ask for your support, your prayers, and for us to 'confidently hope that all will yet be well,'" Obama wrote.

I have been sorta pissed at those types of articles.

Michelle Obama has 2 small children that she wants to prevent from becoming subjects of an ' E! True Hollywood Story'. Black women know that means HANDS ON PARENTING. Why is this so hard for people to believe that this woman means for her children to THRIVE in this world? Are they so unaccomsted to seeing a devoted Black mother that they're twitching with nervousness?

As I wrote over at MOW,

Michelle Obama has 2 small children that she will be raising.

She seems to have an actual MARRIAGE, which means that it will be up to HER to try and carve out a portion of the world for the future President that is REAL...that he can decompress from the pressures of being President.

Add into it that she's the first Black First Lady, and if she did everything the same that Laura Bush did, it would be different, JUST BECAUSE MICHELLE OBAMA IS DOING IT.

From where I sit, that means Michelle Obama will be busy from sun up to sun down for the next 4, hopefully 8 years.

I don't know what the hell these folks want Michelle Obama to do.

Actually, I do know...they want her to be another Hillary Clinton.

But, Michelle Obama would NEVER, and I mean NEVER, put Barack Obama in that position. She would never disrespect Barack Obama that way by overreaching. She would NEVER undermine his Presidency that way.

I think it has to do with this feminine BS. They believe mother/wife is beneath the educated woman. What they don't seem to think about is this: Michelle had a career, completed her education, married and then had children. I can understand why her children would take center stage in her life at this point because she had already done everything else. Plus like you said, we believe in a hands on approach. They want another Hillary to cut the balls of President Obama, that is all. I think in their minds Michelle has too much respect for him as if marriage is a constant power trip.

And this is why you saw that really crazed out stance by some of Hillary's supporters and their unfounded dislike over Michelle. They could never quite articulate why they were so in love with Hillary and then would turn around and bash Michelle....you nailed it.

Because Obama is an inadequate black male [/harrietchristian] who needs to be put in his place.

Basically and who better to do it than the black woman? It's been a divide and conquer amongst the genders for YEARS now.

Also, the Obamas touched on it in their 60 Minutes interview. People need to get over it...

People preach that black women need to stay their ass in the home and take care of the kids and stop being so aggressive and having attitudes and let the man lead.

Michelle Obama is doing that, and people are catching the vapors.

A woman like Michelle is supposed to be either a) alone or b) courting men at her leisure where she is the ring leader ala Oprah/Stedman. But to be committed to a man without loosing her individuality is too much. Black woman are not allowed to be complex. It's either ball-busting, educated, independent or nothing at all. No wait, the flip side to that is baby mama status. I've seen/heard people make the comment that, "she really didn't need him". Ok, I guess a romantic relationship is unnecessary for the successful black woman.

I wanted to say this, but didn't have the words right in my mind to express it.

People seem to be of several minds about black women:

We're either ShaNesha the baby mama, valued by no man;

Or

We're Maxine, the angry black woman at the office with an attitude who slices and dices people up with both hands tied behind our backs. She busts balls and cuts people up in her quest for power.

or

We're Oprahleezza, the accomplished, educated woman who doesn't seem to have a man hanging around. She has everything a woman could want except a man or a child. And if she doesn't want that she obviously (rolls eyes) must be gay.


So it's strange to them to see Barack tapping Michelle on the ass and him clearly being into her, and her clearly being into him and being fine with him being the head of the household. I'll always remember that GMA interview with Robin Roberts where he was like "Don't mess with my wife" with this serious "Don't fuck with me" face and Michelle sitting beside him just a'giggling. But I don't know why people would think it's strange for Michelle with all her education would be fine with Barack being in the driver's seat while she's his ride or die helpmate....................she's only living how she grew up. Her mom was a housewife.

I honestly think some people are uncomfortable with seeing this black woman on a pedestal...because we're supposed to clean the pedestal, or build the pedestal, or help somebody up onto the pedestal or there's this wierd feminazi stance that we're supposed to be offended by the pedestal because........I really dont know why - no one's clued me in on that part.
But a bonafide sistah? we're not supposed to be helped up onto the pedestal by our King and sit up there in all our glory because that's where he wants us to be and that's where you deserve to be. Oh no....I think its really bothering some folks to see this Queen.

That's why, during his Election Night speech, when Obama honored "the love of his life and our next First Lady," I said "Fuck Thomas Jefferson." Michelle Obama being who and what she is represents an end to the Sally Hemmings, second-class treatment of Black women.

YES! The moment he said that *I* felt pride for Michelle and for Sally and for us! I'm wondering if anyone has brought this point up on any of our morning radio shows? I feel like our special victory is being lost. Don't get me wrong, not overshadow PE Obama, but you know what I mean? And it's a little tragic for me at the same time because I feel like younger black women have no clue.

I feel you on this. I place as much value (or more) on the sheer imagery of their love for each other as I do on Barack as President. Our younger people need to see what "love and honor" really means. They need to see this wonderful feminine chocolate woman be loved by her King.

White Americans aren't used to BLACK LOVE. In their eyes, Black women are asexual, and balck men are "Mandingo" That's all they've viewed from tv/movies. Black women taking care of every body's needs except their own. Very rarely ,if any, do we see black couples on tv or at the movies having a deep, fulfilling sexual and meaningful relationship.

America may not get a window into the 'Lincoln" Bedroom of the White House, but they will get to see Michelle and Barack public display of love and respect for each other.

And a tight healthy family unit is a threat of sorts to them, because a family that prays together........

Unlike the UNVETTED ONE, who's family is the complete and utter opposite of what the Republicans preach regarding family values, etc. Go ahead Barack and Michelle- Mr. President and First Lady, show'em how it's done!!

Well I don't know about white Americans, I keep thinking I am one, but I'm half-Arab, half-white-Southerner, 100% liberal feminist West Coaster...

But I just LOVE their relationship and it makes total sense to me. Where is the contradiction? Who is complaining? People just complain too much. Hilary was also the lawyer mama supportive wife. People gave her a hard time about it, too. The difference with the Obamas is that he's really devoted to Michelle in a way that ole Bill with his fidelity issues is not devoted to Hilary.

I just loved how when the Obamas got out of the limo at the White House last week, Barack jumped out, then said "wait a minute" and turned to help Michelle get out of that awkward enormous car. His triumphal moment greeting the sitting President had to wait while he helped his wife out of the car. THat says it all to me. He loves her and he puts her comfort ahead of his moment of glory.

I think that's why so many people love the Obamas as a couple, particularly black people. Because we don't really see black women being treated and regarded as LADIES, and Barack treating Michelle with such respect forces the entire WORLD to see this darker skinned black woman being treated like a queen. Most of the time when you see black women on tv they are shaking their asses or have the mean mug or comforting white women or being SASSAY!

I think it's good for the country to see a couple in a loving, healthy relationship instead of these "arrangements" we've been seing lately.

Which is why Michelle is my she-ro. This may have gone out of style, but I certainly do not aspire to be the head of my household. I grew up with a single mother so when I do get married, bringing my education/experience to the table, I will be A-OK with him leading me. I have nothing to prove to anyone.

Girlfriend should set her own style - my mom used to say Jackie Kennedy got the same type of damned complaints about how much money she spent on clothes and shyt - and homegirl ignored them, and made her own style in the White House - if she were alive today, I think Jackie would give Michelle the same type of advice - "Do your own thing."

This is a result of continuing to believe that African-Americans are a monolithic race. Michelle Obama combines the best of being a Black Woman; she is book smart and street-savvy; she is beautiful and sexy, and most of all, she and Barack demonstrates Black love in a way that can't be fully comprehended by others because it is exactly how they depict it on television and in movies - but the Obamas have the real deal, and rather than ask "Why can't we have that?", they'd rather complain, because to complain takes the focus off their sterile marriages and arrangements masquerading as true love relationships.

The latest wave, announced early Sunday morning, includes Senior Adviser Pete Rouse, who served as Senate chief of staff to Obama and former Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina, who was the chief of staff to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus.

They join incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, a Chicago congressman who is the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House leadership, and White House lobbyist Phil Schiliro, who worked as Daschle's policy director and was House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry A. While Capitol Hill experience is not the primary reason for the appointments, the hires reflect Obama's sensitivity to the importance of Congress in governance, according to a senior transition official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
