I love seeing Obama with his family. There is so much love and affection there. Sasha is truly daddly's little girl. Both her and Malia light up when they see they're daddy. IT's adorable.

rikyrah: HuffPost published the TOP 60 Campaign Ads:
I think this is the most moving one: http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gadgets/slides... St. Louis, Missouri, February 2nd. Lisa Wells-Blackmon cries as Obama signs the flag that covered her brother's casket. Her brother was in the military and killed in Afghanistan.

After the sad news I hate to do this, but I have just seen the most amazing photos I seen in a while.
This is the perfect response for those who claim Obama is nothing but words. The pictures are moving and you might need a kleenex. Hope this is not a repost.

Suprk,
Whatcha go and do that for? It brought tears seeing the old man with his face in his hands crying! I can hardly type for the tears again...
Thank you, Suprk!

Great minds think alike Truth ;-).
To be honest with you, I got weeping watching those pics. The one you highlighted got me, but also the 3 of the man in Times Square moved me as well. When I look at those pictures I know I am not crazy when I am moved by his words and the promise his campaign means to me.

BREAKING NEWS: FROM CNN: OBAMA's GRANDMOTHER PASSED! HEAD BOW
soulsistah02
It is definitely heartbreaking news on the eve of the most historic presidential election in American history. I will lift up the Obamas and the Ngs in my prayers tonight.
MsKitty
Dammit. I was so hoping she would hold on at least to see her grandson elected, but God's will be done. I can't even imagine the swirling of emotions the entire Obama family is feeling right now. As always I will keep them in my prayers.
I found this quote from les Miserables and it sums up the dishonorable campaign that McCain has ran. "There are souls that, crablike, crawl continually toward darkness, going backward in life rather than advancing, using their experience to increase their deformity, growing continually worse, and becoming steeped more and more thoroughly in the intensifying viciousness."

Do you think Barack is aware of how hard Mudflatters are working for him in Alaska?
I really hope he does and gives them some acknowledgements. Not sure how to pass on the information. Because of their hard work and determination the polls in Alaska is now 46.6 McCain/Palin and 43.9 Obama/Biden and there was mention about 5% undecideds.
Thanks for the update Val! That is awesome news about the polls!

Someone is having CHURCH at the Michelle Obama rally on MSNBC. LOL
Not all Republicans were there to protest. “I wanted to see the next vice president of the United States,” said Josh Simmons, Gators for McCain chairman. Simmons said he voted for Obama about two weeks ago. “I’ve seen a different John McCain than the one I signed up to work for,” he said.
Simmons said he submitted his resignation Sunday night and will no longer be chairman for the group, which has more than 1,000 members. “I expect them to be incredibly pissed off,” he said.

Fox News' Major Garrett Defends Obama Against "Fox & Friends" In Leaked E-Mail
Fox News correspondent Major Garrett shot back in defense of Barack Obama against the network's morning show's effort to suggest that he has ignored Fox News throughout the campaign. In an internal email obtained by the Huffington Post, Garrett — who has been Fox News' correspondent following the Obama campaign — took issue with a planned "Fox & Friends" segment about whether Obama will try to control the media, using "KICKED REPORTERS OFF PLANE, IGNORE FNC, BIDEN FL AV INTVIEW" as "examples he's already done."
Fox News is probably worried their BS is coming to an end! Sean Hannity is the one responsible for the Rev Wright controversy. These lowlifes went to Trinity church snooping around to find anything they could on Barack in order to take him down! They're fair & balanced...my @ss!

Just incase we have people who are still straddling the fence in our lives, lets remind them of all the idiots that the repubs have had on their payrolls at one point or another.
Here's the classic gem of Chris Matthews calling out a spin doctor on the word appeasement.
With less than 24 hours to go before the presidential election, Sarah Palin still has not released her medical records and there is no indication the campaign is planning to do so.
Two weeks ago, Palin's campaign told several reporters traveling with the campaign that a summary of the governor's medical history would be made public before election day.
John McCain, Barack Obama and Joseph Biden have all provided details about their medical history.
I'm goin' STR8 to "Alaska" and tell them about the UN-VETTED ONE and her antics on THIS MATTER! :>)
SHE's A LIAR and a DECEIVER!! WE CAN'T have HER go any further! NO WE CAN'T!! ARRRRGGGG!!
GreenLady, those medical records might tell that she didn't deliver a baby in March of this year...that baby Trig is really Bristol's child and not hers.
There's no other reason to keep the medical records sealed.
And John McCain has not put full disclosure of his medical records - the media only had 30 seconds to see them before they got snatched up and locked away.
GreenLadyHere
CPL: Something is, OBVIOUSLY< goin' on! Hmmm!
It's DISCONCERTING that: 1. She "bounced" from the delivery room in 3 days to go "back to work!?" WHAT'S that about??? Annnnd, at 44 - that's still an "age" for concern. I've neva heard of a doctor releasing someone from their care in 3 days!! VERY SUSPICIOUS!!
2. WHO's "breastfeeding" the child in order to do some "bonding" [for a "special needs" child??] I'm sure that -with some exceptions- this would be a serious recommendation from a pediatrician!
3. WAS a DNA/paternity test done?? Normally, it's NOT - BUT - there were "allegations" [per the NE] of infidelity. Hmmm?
NOW, I really question IFFF Trig IS Down's Syndrome. His "karyotype would be PART of HER records! That would be the 1st thing that I would look for.
MR. OBAMA IS "PREACHING" ON CNN!!
Val
I can hardly wait so see just what is in her medical records although I believe we already called it on JJP 8 weeks ago.
We will never see the records. After tomorrow she will have no reason to release them. Also, Bristol will have a "miscarriage" because I don't think she is really pregnant.

Obama's Nevada State Director Dies
Terence Tolbert, Barack Obama's Nevada state director, died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday. He was 44, and a former senior aide to New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein and mayor Michael Bloomberg.
For this reason, the mood in Obama's campaign headquarters is more somber than it otherwise would be.
I know how you feel, Sepia! I called folks for the first time this past weekend. You will probably be pleasantly surprised to find that very few, if any, voters will challenge and/or quiz you about Obama's policy positions. (This is what I was most nervous about.) Either they are on board and want information about voting procedures, or they are not - in which case, it's a thank you for your time and have a nice day! My experience is limited and I plan to do it again tomorrow, but I hope this helps. You can do it!!!!
You will not be persuading people which is kind of touchy.
Your role, now, is to let them know where their polling place is. When they complain they have been called too many times. Tell them where you are from and how important people their State is... Apologize for the inconvenience if any, but let them know our nation will be forever changed with their support, then hit save and go on to the NEXT caller.
In my experience, you leave a lot of messages and get a lot of wrong numbers.
Push through the discomfort.
:)
caligirl
true. it's MUCH easier now than it was during the primaries!
While I agree that "brothers" should pull up their pants (seriously, I saw a pack of teenagers this summer strolling down the beach with their jeans sagging [95 degrees outside mind you], constantly pulling up their pants and shuffling sand all over the place) --- I was in the restaurant Saturday and saw a pack of white college boys with their pants sagging and constantly pulling them up. Why is sagging pants still a trend, and why single out the "brothers?"
caligirl
he singled them out because he's a black man speaking to (directing his statements to) black men. what's wrong with that? black people tend to set fashion trends (for good or bad) in this country. it's not a secret that black men, specifically incarcerated black men, started this trend. once they stop, everybody else will follow suit.
It s actually going out of style and those who wear it are either young, slack, wannabes or thugs=losers.
Out here in NY, I have been seeing less and less of it.
caligirl
i think it depends on where you live. in certain areas, it's still very popular...unfortunately.
Val
Town - you have to put it in context. He was doing an interview and MTV. His response was appropriate to the question and the questioner.
Sway: Our next question comes from Eric out of Huntington Beach, California: "There are numerous cultures and subcultures in the United States today. Powers-that-be set statutes with monetary penalty on how people wear their clothes. Do you find it intrusive on civil liberties to create such ordinances?" And you know I got 'locks.
Obama: I wasn't going to pass a law, man. You look tight.
Sway: I know people have piercings, tattoos. Eric, in particular, is talking about a ban on sagging pants. Do feel like people should be penalized?
Obama: Here is my attitude: I think people passing a law against people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time. We should be focused on creating jobs, improving our schools, health care, dealing with the war in Iraq, and anybody, any public official, that is worrying about sagging pants probably needs to spend some time focusing on real problems out there. Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What's wrong with that? Come on. There are some issues that we face, that you don't have to pass a law, but that doesn't mean folks can't have some sense and some respect for other people and, you know, some people might not want to see your underwear — I'm one of them.
Sway: In regards to piercings, tattoos, I had a friend who worked for UPS and he had 'locks. He almost lost his job, but he fought for it. In regards to those things, how do you feel?
Obama: It's one thing if an employer discriminates on the basis of gender or sexual orientation or, obviously, race or ethnicity. I think employers can set standards. Now you got 'locks, but it looks clean, man, it's tight, and my little girl has twists, Malia, and to me, it looks great. Obviously I would be upset if she were discriminated against on that basis. On the other hand, if you are working at a fancy store and you show up to work in jeans and a shirt and you have a tatoo across your neck like Mike Tyson, for them to say, you know, "That is not the kind of image we are trying to project," obviously, that is in their rights as well. I think any business has the right to say, "This is the kind of tone we want to set," as long as they aren't discriminating on the basis of things people can't control.
Town
Sway wasn't asking him about the brothers, so what the brothers do shouldn't have been part of his answer. JMO.
I think that I had mentioned on this blog in the past that from reading the comments here, I assume that I am probably one of the youngest people on this blog so I come with a different perspective.
I am tired of people behaving like "sagging pants", "gansta-isms " and mainstream hip POP culture, gangsta rap and prision culture are what defines all young black men in America rather than it being a subculture that emerged and got too much attention due to our society's love affair with the promotion of negative images of African Americans. None of the black men that I associate with in my life dress as the commentors here are claiming they all do. They are all young because I just turned 22.
The same way we want whites to treat us, we must treat ourselves.
AsI have said before, this is going slowly out of style and their has been a backlash already. It came wat before Obama; he has nothing to do with it. It came from on outside source but from other young black men whether in popular culture or in everyday life who despised this look and despised it from the get-go.
I grew up in an all white neighborhood for much of my life. I remember the styles where the white chics used to wear their thongs above their jeans and their bras above their tank tops. I see white boys in sagging pants. Everytime they get up they are exposed! Companies make clothes to cater to those who dress badly.
What annoys me about this whole debate about young black men and sagging pants is that their are too many generalizations and assumptions.
A funny aspect is when this teenage boy where I volunteer in Brooklyn told me that he stopped wearing his pants around his thighs when he was running for the bus on day and they fell to his ankles and tripped him up. He said it was the most embarassing moment of his life.
Val
Town - I have nothing but respect for you.
That said, I read the interview and the questions asked. Now which demographic do you believe MTV was targeting with this segment?
I have no problems with the way Obama speaks to the brothers. I think it is a good thing and I hope Obama does more of it.
Justice58
I have no problems with the way Obama speaks to the brothers. I think it is a good thing and I hope Obama does more of it.
I have no problem either! Frankly, I'm tired of seeing young guys, white or black, with sagging pants and seeing their underwear or the crack of their behind! It's disgusting to me!
Val
Want to clarify the first sentence.
Town - I have nothing but respect for you and am just giving my own perspective on this.
TruthSeeker
Could be 'cause it's prison chic....and therefore more negatively construed for young black men. Visually, I think most people find it merely an oddity on white men - to the point of not even noticing it; whereas, it somehow seems threatening in black men. No, it's not fair.
For Barack, I think he's got that church vibe. He "preaches" to black men. I think he's out of line, because there is no shortage of real "preachers" in the black community. Barack is relating to young black men in the only way he knows, and I don't think men like it. Barack doesn't know how to give a kind word, to soothe or encourage, perhaps.
Lets hope they show up at the polls.
pjamma
I tend to think when Obama says brothers he is talking, in this context, to young men who wear there pants sagging. The may be black, asian, latino or white. I think brothers=men. I've heard many young men refer to another man as brother and they aren't black.
TruthSeeker
My instinct is that he shouldn't be dabbling in this stuff....except to talk of it in very general, non-specific terms....and unless he is specifically asked to mentor young men.
Miranda
Ewww...no TS...there are NOT many real preachers in the black community anymore. There are a lot of men with "Rev" or "Bishop" proceeding their name, but that doesn't mean a damn thing.
I don't see this as preaching. This is a class issue. There are certain mannerisms and behaviors prevalent with the lower classes. And the sagging pants/no shoe laces is an indoctrination of prison culture. Criminal mentality. Black people in other countries don't have their men dressing like this. I don't know about you but I would have a hard time taking a man seriously who dresses like that. What kind of job would he have to provide for a family? Do people see beyond their immediate neighborhood or see themselves as productive citizens of the world? Either way it is extremely limiting. My brothers were never allowed to dress that way for this very reason.
Val
Truth - this is rare but I disagree with you. Not all young black men wear sagging pants and the ones that do, may interpret it as a "father" or "uncle" saying pull your pants up. Barack is straight forward and some of our young black men need to hear that from someone in a positive role who cares about them.
I have been working with at risk teens since I was in my teens (volunteer role) and one of the most common thing I hear from them is that no one cared enough to tell them these things and if they did it would probably have made a difference in their lives and their choices could have been different.
So while it may seem harsh to some, it can make a positive difference to our youth.
TruthSeeker
You could be right.
I often think however, that the words delivered in a flippant way, without context, have less impact. It's so cliche, the pulling up the pants. Surely, this is not the source of all our troubles?
On the Black in America special, there was a young man at a job interview, dressed traditionally in a suit and tie. He was treated abysmally. It was clear to me that this young man felt like less...despite his attire. Obama is astoundingly insightful. Why is he resorting to cliches?
There is a distinction to be made between kids/teens who are just doing what kids do by following "fashion", and adult men who've outgrown that stage, yet continue to dress that way. There is an element of "shaming" in the preaching/criticism. The idea being that if you can embarrass the person, they'll change. But if that person is deeply depressed....shame is not an improvement. In fact, I think shame intensifies cultural depression.
Barack needs young black men to be sufficiently moved to show up at the polls. He won't accomplish that by making them feel worse about themselves.
Perhaps this is why such a large number of them haven't voted in Georgia.
But let me also say this:
There's a certain set of "brothers' that, no matter what Barack says or doesn't say, will not see Barack as one of them and will pretty much ignore him as "uppity."
Yeah. I said that.
"Uppity" isn't just a smear used by white politicians.
Black male masculinity (and femininity) is a subject for its own blog, to be sure.
Gender is performance.
caligirl
couldn't agree more. my sons are 20 and 16. both knew/know that 'sagging' in public was not going to happen, PERIOD. their "straightforward" daddy would be all over them. i realise that not all youth have this guidance.

a prominent female would be a good/more effective role model for young girls.
pjamma
I agree. A statement like that should come from Michelle.
TruthSeeker
Should Michelle do it, though? Is it overstepping?
pjamma
I'm not saying Michelle should do it but if it were to be done it should come from Michelle vs. Barrack.
TruthSeeker
Should McCain press young men to join the military?
I'm wondering how far does he take this... Should Michelle tell young girls to be "modest", get married and have children? Should a president be a cultural or moral leader, or should he set a good example and leave it at that?
caligirl
we won't know how far he'll take this until he's elected. i assume he'll take it as far as it needs to be taken. he seems to have pretty good instincts.
i don't think he's said anything improper. in some ways, he's damned either way. the man is in a tight tight spot, which will only get tighter. but he made these statements as a private citizen. he has the right to have an opinion.
there is a crisis (i believe) in our community. at this point, i'm open to whatever may get through to some of these folks. we need to try new angles. experiment.

Hello JJP,
This weekend I was in Nevada canvassing and I must tell you....I am speechless. Their were 4500 volunteers traveling from Southern Cali - (going to Vegas) and about 1700 traveling from Northern Cali- (going to Reno).
My group hit the precint where the majority of the population was black and brown and hurting...
I had ten people in my group and together we knocked on over 900 doors, in one day. Sunday morning we went back to those who weren't home. We canvassed a whole freaking precint!
As time went on I found myself gaining more courage to knock on a strangers door for Obama....all by myself...yayyy me!
I have so many stories from my experience. From the ride up there with all of our vans decorated Obama style to the on-the-ground duty.
We walked miles and miles ...project to project to homes with 3 to 5 broken down cars in the yard.
I'm usually at HQ volunteering there, but I am so glad I decided to hit the ground.

My stomach is doing flip-flops, y'all. My nerves are jittery and I'm getting all teary-eyed. I'm supposed to be prepping for the classes I'm going to teach today and all I can think about is Obama and this election. As others have said - I just want everyone to know how much I APPRECIATE the positive vibes, the reality checks, and even the occasional disagreement at JJP.
This past weekend I volunteered for Obama for the first time, canvassing and phonebanking in North Carolina. It was a great experience and I still don't feel as if I've done enough (I know so many of you have been volunteering for months!) but I definitely moved outside my comfort zone and I tried to take Obama's call to action seriously.
I just trying not to get myself too worked up. Is this really going to happen?!? Are the conservative white folks in my neighborhood going to lose their collective minds after Obama wins? How will the energy and inspiration of his campaign transfer to his office as president. I've never felt so invested in the highest levels of political leadership before - I'm using to complaining that things aren't going "our" way.
And finally - I just have to say that I'm am THROUGH with "Morning Joe." Too through. He is still running the tired script about Obama being a self-congratulatory narcissist. Are you kidding me?
Yea, I am feeling really nervous and excited at the same time.
Also, I stopped watching Morning Joe a while ago.

Joe needs to explain the dead girl found in his office!
WOW I knew nothing about Lori Klausutis --- now how does he end up with a TV show with this unexplained stuff in his past? also did not realize he quit congress amid rumors of cheating and ultimately a divorce. Something smells fishy here....
Doesn't it seem like McCain's 'Dr. No' was from over a year ago? Those sound like schoolyard insults compared to what his campaign would drag out later.
For people working the polls tomorrow, remember to show the same courtesy and respect to non-supporters that you would to supporters. It's gonna be a long day for everyone, and there's no need in making anyone more uncomfortable than we all will already be.

I think we are all good D. Let me put it this way . . . . Unlike the Repub woman who refused to give candy to kids on Halloween if they or their parents were Obama supporters, I believe the Dems will continue to give candy to everybody. :-)
It's all good.
Justice58
Val,
How could she? How can a grown ass woman be mean to little innocent kids and refused them candy on Halloween? You know, I could whip some ass when it comes to someone mistreating kids. We all have our differences but leave the little ones alone. I can't take that sh%t!! I hope she doesn't have an hour of peace until she begs for forgiveness. I hope her neighbors run her out of the neighborhood. I hope whenever she eats candy, she'll break out in a rash with intense itching! lol
LOL! That sounds like something I would do if I were really pissed off.
I'm paranoid at times. I was discussing with the mrs last night the chances of an Obama victory riot, and Obama loss riot, and conservative stupidity regardless of the outcome.
So I'm probably just-as has been called here-concern trolling.
And, as a troll, I have NOT donated to JJP's fundraising drive. That's for Nate.
Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can't ride you unless your back is bent. Martin Luther King,Jr.
JJP, I am so glad I found y'all during this historic campaign. I'll admit, I'm addicted. And I have learned so much here and will continue. I just wish most of us here at JJP could have been in the pundit's chair----because I swear we are collectively so much more informed than the media even tries to be.
No matter what the outcome tomorrow---which will likely be Obama's win---I hope we all continue to learn, educate, and be leaders and activists in our communities. Because there is plenty of work to be done no matter who wins.
I am purposely keeping the televison off today, relying on sites like JJP to keep the positive dialogue going. Let's continue to make and be a part of history.

Just for the record, Obama will win Virginia! And it won't be b/c a self righteous siffling of opinion. It will be because of people like an elderly woman I met two weekends ago. She was clearly well over 70 with substantial osteoporosis. She didn't volunteer to phone bank; she canvassed. I didn't think she could complete more than 5 houses, particularly because the target sheets do not put the streets in complete alphabetical and numerical order. You might have streets 5 streets apart on the same page, but guess what? She finished! That's how I know we're going to win. Not b/c of cheerleading all day on blogs.
Yeah, I come here to vent. That's what black folks do. But we never question each others' commitment or loyalty.
And some of you have a short and selective memory. A remember more than a few of you now attacking me wavering in your support within the last year b/c of issues like Obama denouncing Reverend Wright on the View or his vote on FISA or his "lack of" commitment ot our issues. How soon we forget. True enough, I didnn't hestitate to say I thought those forlks were being short sighted, but NEVER did I question your loyalty.
Yeah, I got a big mouth and very opinionated. Always have been and always will be. And yes I am a worry wort about everything I hold dear. And there is no bigger priority in my life (other than my son) than this Campaign.
Yes, I'm obsessing over ads and the like b/c how we finish this campaign will be the difference between a definitive win and a marginal win. I want a DEFINITIVE win!
Peace!

NMP,
I'm going to continue to tell you this....you keep on coming here. You keep us grounded. We get too complacent and that's no good. So, I know exactly where you're coming from...
I know...when this place was slow and sleepy, you were here. So, don't you go anywhere on me.
NMP
I don't tell have to tell you, you're the main reason I keep coming back. I lie to you not, it was your posts at SB and other blogs that got be hooked to this blog thing. So, as long as you're there, I'll keep coming back! Y'all are like family. No matter how mad I get and say I'll never speak to you again, you know things will be cool by the end of the week.
Girl, I'm so nervous I don't know what to do. I just hope I don't break down crying tomorrow when I enter the voting booth. Do you realize tomorrow will be no less monumental than we our elders voted for the first time? We'll have that same feeling tomorrow.
Town
But the elderly canvasser didn't reach the Conservative White Men living next door to Jerry Falwell's house, and people were watching the football games instead of looking out for Obama ads, so how could he possibly win? OH NOEZ!!!
pjamma
Seriously, can't you just let it go, Town? We all want Obama to win (except D. but I'm guessing he won't be mad when he does). So why try to call someone out who is working toward this goal and is just trying to vent their concerns?
Town
Nope, because I don't believe that NMP is working for the goal. So everytime she gets on here concern trolling I will call her out.
End of story.
pjamma
Get it out, get it all out.
About 40 hours to go and then we will know all the ups, downs, disagreements, doubt and fear are behind us.
We are all fighting for the same goal...Obama '08!!!!!

from DailyKos:
I Can Finally Stop Lying To My Children (Update) by Sin City Expat [Subscribe] Sun Nov 02, 2008 at 10:41:17 PM PDT Let me tell you why I am an Obama supporter. I am a forty-something African-American man. My career has been in law enforcement and I currently overseas working for my country. I support Barack Obama, not because we share a similar pigmentation and heritage, not because I believe that he is a ‘messiah’ as suggested by those of a particular political leaning. It’s not even because I was born and raised in Chicago. My answer is a lot simpler and closer to many Americans.
Sin City Expat's diary :: :: I believe in the American dream. Let me repeat, I believe in the American dream! That dream that we talk about and most of us share to some degree or another. I also have two daughters whom I love more than anything. The old adage is that America is the country where any kid, if they work hard can grow up to be president. Well, that was never really true for me, my family or people who looked like me. It was not true for other ethnic minorities who comprise a significant portion of this melting pot that is the United States of America. It wasn’t true for women. I am relatively bright. I have worked hard. I have been successful in the workplace. But all of that made no difference as until this cycle very few of us thought that America had come far enough that I could ever have had the opportunity to be tapped as the standard bearer of this country, my country.
My best day canvassing ever in West Virginia. With good exit poll info on early voting here.
caligirl
love these 'daddy's girl' photos. i'm a 43-year-old daddy's girl. this takes me back to when my daddy was the epicentre of my entire world. my face still lights up when i see him. he's 75, and still one of the most handsome, charming, kind, intelligent souls i've ever known.
caligirl
and he can't wait to vote for sasha (and malia's) daddy tomorrow! :-)
Just wanted to kind of echo Blackamericanprincess' comments and say big ups and thanks to JJP. Throughout all the madness of this election that we have all become so invested in, JJP has been an oasis, a comfort.
I also wanted to let you all know how EXCITED everyone here in the Caribbean is about this election. I have NEVER.EVER. seen anything like this.
There are Obama shirts selling in town, people are having election night parties and planning to party through the night, people are talking about it endlessly on the call-in programmes.
It is considered so important that the newspaper I work with (Barbados Nation) will be carrying election coverage all day long on our website. That has never been done before.
But this time is different.
And last thing - I have said this on this forum today but I just want to reinforce it. I am so, so, SO proud as a black woman to see how African-Americans have responded to this election and Obama's candidacy. It has really been inspiring and a joy to be alive at this moment in history.
Val
This is a GREAT moment not just for the USA but for the world.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Who are the 'undecided' voters and how will they vote?
According to this morning's Mason/Dixon Poll in key battleground states the race has moved to within the margin of error and 'undecided' voters number between 4 - 9%
The Democrat Party seems to have lurched dramatically left. Democrats are convinced that the entire country has also moved left. But for many 'moderate' Democrats, is the 'Change We Need' too much?
My gut tells me that undecided voters are primarily white, blue-collar men.
My gut also tells me that these men are the LEAST likely to respond to a pollster or if pressed to respond, answer truthfully.
So where does that really leave Obama?
Has he 'made the sale', 'closed the deal' with these guys?
Doubts about Barack Obama's experience, values, and patriotism, more than racial resentments, are driving the resistance to him among working-class whites, according to an extensive study of those voters released by veteran Democratic pollster Stanley B. Greenberg in August.
In the study, Obama faced substantial hurdles, suffering substantial defection among white noncollege Democrats. In the focus groups, conducted among Democrats resisting Obama, voters struggled between a strong desire for change and deep doubts about the presumptive Democratic nominee.
"Reagan Democrats" -- are identified as traditionally Democratic working-class whites who moved to the GOP during the Ronald Reagan era around issues of national strength, taxes, and a belief that Democrats favored minorities on questions like welfare and affirmative action.
In 1984, when Greenberg's focus groups found that these working-class whites interpreted Democratic calls for economic fairness as code for transfer payments to African-Americans, national Democratic leaders suppressed the study as too inflammatory.
Later, as pollster for Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, Greenberg helped craft the "New Democrat" message that attempted to recapture Reagan Democrats by linking efforts to expand opportunity with personal responsibility and fiscal discipline through initiatives such as welfare reform.
Has Obama been able to connect with the economic anxiety of white blue-collar men?
Can these voters overlook the 'bitter/clinger' comments? Do they agree with a tax policy that 'spreads the wealth' , touts 'redistributive change' or government mandated 'fairness'? For men who may one day dream of being 'their own boss' how do Obama's comments about wanting to 'fundamentally transform' America truly sit with these men?
And while the economy is the dominant issue, can Obama overcome doubts about his qualifications as commander-in-chief , especially in light of Joe Biden's recent 'Mark my words' comments?
Fears about Obama's ability to be C-in-C are much more prevalent among blue-collar men.
When Greenberg's focus groups found that these working-class whites interpreted Democratic calls for economic fairness as code for transfer payments to African-Americans, national Democratic leaders suppressed the study as too inflammatory.
Clinton reduced the GOP advantage in Macomb in 1992, and won the county comfortably in 1996, but George W. Bush narrowly carried it in 2004.
Obama's struggles in Macomb County reflect his larger challenges among white voters without a college education. During the Democratic primaries, Hillary Rodham Clinton defeated Obama 2-to-1 among those voters, exit polls found. In four major preconvention national polls, Obama drew 38 percent or less of white noncollege voters against McCain. That's no better than John Kerry's anemic showing of 38 percent among those voters in 2004.
Obama doesn't need to win a majority of working-class whites to be victorious in November; indeed, a simultaneous Greenberg poll in Michigan found Obama leading statewide while trailing in Macomb. But to win nationwide in 2008, Obama will need to improve somewhat on Kerry's performance among blue-collar whites, most Democratic analysts agree. And he'll need to substantially improve among those voters if he hopes to build a lasting majority coalition. "You can't build a sustainable Democratic majority without blue-collar America as part of it," Greenberg said.
The poll and focus groups found that Obama's greatest asset with these blue-collar voters is widespread discontent over Bush's performance and a pervasive, at times overpowering, sense of economic vulnerability.
But the survey found Obama winning only half of Macomb voters who consider the country on the wrong track and just three-fifths of those who disapprove of Bush -- strikingly low numbers. Part of the resistance remains racial: In the focus groups, several respondents said they were closely watching for proof Obama would not favor African-Americans if elected.
But the study concludes, "Macomb voters do not seem to be voting predominantly on race." Few, for instance, considered Obama similar to Jesse Jackson, a symbol of racial tension there.
Obama faced two larger hurdles with these voters. One was a failure by Obama to connect with their economic anxiety. Obama's recent shift toward a sharper-edged economic message may help him on that front.
Obama may find the other barrier more intractable: doubts about his qualifications as commander-in-chief and patriotism. Some voters suspected Obama secretly shared the anti-American sentiments expressed by his pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright; several others, even more explosively, wondered if Obama was a Muslim (he's not) and might be secretly sympathetic to terrorists. "You don't want to [find], if he's in office and then a week later we've got Afghanistan on our front door and we're all in cells six feet under," one younger man said.
Those incendiary fears were much more prevalent among Macomb men than women, who frequently described Obama in more positive terms like "fresh ideas" or "confident." While the Macomb poll found little difference between men and women, those reactions suggest blue-collar women "are more gettable" for Obama than working-class white men, Greenberg concluded.

I'm sure you will be posting here on November 5, 2008, right?

I must commend you on your copy and paste skills, s.
I'm not sure Ronald Brownstein or the National Journal would approve of you lifting their work as your own, though.
Consider yourself done for the day. But not before donating to JJP's Obama Fundraising Drive--there's still time for that, buddy.

"Doubts about Barack Obama's experience, values, and patriotism, more than racial resentments, are driving the resistance to him among working-class whites"----Ha ha ha! as if those three arent racially motivated!
Yes, yes... we know, we know... he's black, a socialist, not American, other, black, black, black, and wants to spread the wealth around to negroes who don't work.
He can't close the deal, has problems with real americans which are white of course and has problems with women and hispanics.
HE'S GONNA TAX AND SPEND LIKE CRAZY!
He's African, was born in Kenya, (don't forget, he's black), muslim, and not christian.
He is a christian, wants to turn the white house into a pyramid, attended a madrassa, is definitely moses, is most likely the anti-christ, and doesn't love America.
HE IS SCARY!!!
Did I mention he's black? Also, don't forget those pesky associations.
BBC has sublimely been callin' him arrogant and demagog! They came to senses and changed His photo along with the same Trickster's posed photo.

Did you know Sen. Obama has red Kool Aid, Sunny D AND the purple stuff in his refrigerator?
Did you know that Michelle was planning on having a truckload of chitlins and pig feets delivered to the White House for the state dinners?
Did you know that Malia and Sasha were going to blast Nas and Ludacris outside of the Lincoln Bedroom?
Did you know that the Obamas were going do the Electric Slide and breakdance at the Inauguration Ball?
OH NOEZ!!!
Admiral_Komack
Sunny D? He's obviously a socialist.
islandgirl550
Town! You are crazy!!! But, I think you forgot one important part...Sen. Obama will have his entire family from KENYA move in. I can just see the headlines now, "Obama has bushmeat delivered!"
Val
Obama is also going to use wire hangers as antennaes on all the tvs in the WH after he tells Michelle to make sure they are wrapped in aluminum foil.
MsKitty
And that rumor about the Obamas putting plastic slipcovers on all the furniture, even in the East Room...it's true.
Town
I also forgot that Michelle will have the wooden fork and spoon placed on the wall as well. And she will use the White House Kitchen to do her and the girls' hair.

No longer will apple pie be the quintessential American dessert...oh noez...that title now beez Sweet Potato Pie
The wingers are already starting to reclaim the public discourse. The meme we'll be hearing in coming weeks, months (years, God help us) is that American has affirmed and validated the center-right view of governing.
When Obama wins, it will be solely because he made a bipartisan appeal. There is no room for the leftist view, there is no support for progressive politics, America is conservative, right leaning, ever after til kingdom come to the (wrong) side of center.
It is false and they'll be playing this song to death, indoctrinating, as they do so well, the American people into thinking that progressive is wrong and right is forever after correct.
We have to fight this, people. As a theory of governing, conservatism as promoted by the Republican party is a resounding ~ and devastatingly destructive ~ failure.
"Reality has a strong liberal bias." Some comedian said that, but it is the truth.

Can I just say that these are beautiful pictures? I know we're supposed to be worrying or debating or whatever, but I'm tired. Can't wait for tomorrow! This past weekend I waited 4 hours @ Richmond City Hall to vote. The turnout for that alone was ENCOURAGING to say the least. Now as for the rest of VA? We will see...
I'm with you Alex. I am SO-O-O-O excited I feel like a child waiting for Santa Claus!! I have NO doubts whatsoever!!

I just have to give Jack and Jill Politics massive a big ole cyber hug, you guys have HELD.IT.DOWN. throughout this entire process! I cannot tell you how this blog has given me hope with all the insightful, intelligent, commentary. Yall are my cyber kinfolk, for REAL. It's so refreshing to be around like-minded people. I know it's not Tuesday yet but I believe in my heart that we have the victory!! I'm about to call a beautiful sista I met while I was canvassing voters in Hartford. She's the CEO of a neighborhood center and she offered to use her agency's van to provide transportation to people who have no way to get to the polls so I'm gonna call her to see how we can coordinate that tomorrow.
This is such a special moment for our country and for our people. God bless you all, the Moet is chilling in my refrigerator right NOW....
MsKitty
Not that I really needed to, but I hedged my bets and bought both a bottle of Korbel (for a very good night); and a bottle of Jameson's (for a very bad night). Actually I'll need the Jameson's to calm my nerves until the election is called, then I will do the following 3 things: pop open the Korbel, crank up the "Victory Mix" playlist on the i-Pod (which has yet been unplayed), and call the family to whoop and holler.
It's a fine line trying to be optimistic without jinxing things. Some of that 2000/2004 PTSD, I guess.
Val
Girl you better go get your money back on the Jameson's. You won't need it.
jelana
I have to run out to get my bottle! I have taken the day off Wednesday!
Outspent and under siege in a hostile political climate, Congressional Republicans scrambled this weekend to save embattled incumbents in an effort to hold down expected Democratic gains in the House and Senate on Tuesday.
With the election imminent, Senate Republicans threw their remaining resources into protecting endangered lawmakers in Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Oregon, while House Republicans were forced to put money into what should be secure Republican territory in Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and Wyoming.
NMP
Is it concern trolling to wonder why this entire weekend in Northern Virginia (and I assume state wide), McCain is running 3 ads for every 1 Obama ad? Is it unfair to ask if David Axelrod cluelessly underestimated the investment the RNC and 528's were willing to invest in running the the Reverend Wright ad? He told the Politico they didn't think a response ad (eventhough they had one ready to go) was necessary b/c he didn't think the buy would be "big enough" to make it worth while. Hmmm, how is big is big in David Alexrod's mind? The ad is running at least twice every 30 minutes and it ran during Sunday Night Football and Desparate Houswives, probably the most expensive buys for Sunday primetime. Call me a crazy or a troll, but I'd say is "big enough."
The Campaign told the LA Times it would be running ads with the Colin Powell endorsement. Great idea, especially in Virginia and North Carolina where Powell's name is the gold standard, especially within the military community and among moderate Republicans. Maybe I have a "special" tv, but I haven't seen one ad featuring Colin Powell in Virginia (where Obama's lead is the margin of error).
I'm not trying to be a hater or doubter, but I-just-don't-get-it! You can call me all the names you want, but it's no different than what we saw late in the primaries. Letting up now is effectively stopping at the one yard line. Unfortunately, this time, there are no superdelegates to put him in the in zone.
All that said, I'll be GOTV'ing tonight and on my knees tomorrow night in prayer circle with you all. However this turns out, we're in this together!
Val
because NMP, Obama's prep work was already done and now is the time to execute. McCain is just now doing his homework at the breakfast table and his project is due at first period. So McCain is late to the game and his grade will reflect that.
At this point there are NO UNDECIDED voters. none. All that is left is for us to VOTE and help others vote.
NMP
I don't disagree in essence. It's just my belief that you when your opponent is down you put your foot on their neck. Let's not call them undecided, but rather movable or soft voters. I don't want them going into the voting booth with Reverend Wright on the brain. That's all.
Val
NMP well this will be good news for you . . . nobody gives a shit about Rev Wright but they do care that it is the first of the month and the bills (to include mortgate/rent) are not paid.
rikyrah
NMP,
I know that McCain put more money into ads,but as I've posted elsewhere, he didn't put the money into GOTV. It's the final hours, and his money is in ads, where Obama is getting boots on the ground.
I understand your anxiety, and I'm glad you're the JJP Chicken Little. You keep us dosed with a little vinegar in the Kool Aid and that's quite good. Keeps us balanced.
Town
You're right, Barack Obama is going to lose big time.
I look forward to you coming up here Wednesday morning crowing I TOLD YOU SO.
I live in Virginia and I've seen the Colin Powell ad several times, so maybe you have a special HILLARYVISION TV that blocks all of this out.
PLEASE, I URGE you to vote for John McCain so all of your I TOLD YOU SO dreams can come true.
NMP
Did I say he was going lose?! HELL NO!!! I have blisters on my feet for the amount of time I spend walking Arlington Virginia for the Obama Campaign. Do you think I would be out there--dragging my son too--after working a 55 hour work week if I thought this was a losing cause?! And NO I don't like coming in after a day of knocking on doors to see Reverend Wright in heavy rotation and seeing Obama maybe once per hour.
Where do you live at in Virginia?
Town
I live in "Real Virginia" and I've seen the Colin Powell ad several times.
Yes I do believe you think he's going to lose, and you are HOPING he loses so you can be vindicated.
Hillary lost. Get over it.
Miranda
Everytime you shrill, a kitten dies.
NMP
I shouldn't allow myself to get this emotional, but what are we becoming a black version of Fox News and Sean Hannity where we can't exhange ideas and disagree, but share the same common goal?! Damn! Will you be questioning my patriotism next?
Before the IA Caucus, when Obama wasn't pulling even 40% of the Black vote, I frequented black blogs that got in Obama' s ass, notably Skeptical Brotha, but at KNOW time did we question each others loyalty.
Are you arguing that with Obama's resources that it makes any sense to allow McCain and the GOP to saturate the air waves in Virginia? Or is that you just don't want me to say it aloud? It's not as if it's too late! Just amp up the media buy. That's all I'm saying!
Town
It's too late.
You're right.
Obama's going to lose. He would have won if only he had listened to you.
Since you claim to be working for the Obama campaign, have you shared any of your "concerns" with the higher-ups?
Get on the phone or knock on doors in Northern Virginia and GOTV.
You have worked my last nerve with your anxiety.
Val
LOLOLOLOLOLOL Craig. RAOTFLMAO
You are FIRED UP!
NMP
I have been on the phones and knocking on doors in NOVA--LONG BEFORE OTHER BLACK FOLKS GOT ON THE OBAMA BAND WAGON! It's not about anxiety; it's about strategy! I know my state, just like you know yours. I've fourth generation Virginia, my family owns home on "Johnson Hill" where the first slaves settled after the civil war when they had to register at the Freedman's Bureau aka the Pentagon. The voting block we need to reach in Virginia is WHITE MEN: Conservative Democrats and Moderate Republicans. And when they go the voting booth on Tuesday, I want Colin Powell and Obama in their heads, NOT Reverend Wright!
You know what, Craig, it's easy to sell wolf tickets on a blog. Peace, brother!
Town
I see you.
Both Obama and McCain have done all they can do at this point. Ads and rallies really aren't going to make a difference at this point because it's up to the people, the ground game.
And since your primary purpose on this blog has been to DEPRESS enthusiasm for Obama supporters, I don't believe that you have been phone banking for Obama, I don't believe that you have been canvassing for Obama, unless your idea of canvassing is letting everybody know Obama ain't gonna win.
Do you really expect us to believe that the Obama people would have you phonebanking and canvassing for them with your negative attitude?
You don't want Obama to win and you're going to be the first person posting in the Election thread screaming I TOLD YOU SO.
I've peeped your game.
NMP
"Ain't"? "Peeped your game"? You've revealed a lot.
"Do you really expect us to believe that the Obama people would have you phonebanking and canvassing for them with your negative attitude?"
Yes, that let my little black behind VOLUNTEER, and they are gracious to take my money too! In fact, I'll be at Pollard Street in Arlington AT 4PM. I don't have anything to hide. My name is Dawn Deskins if you want to ask for me.
Town
I can be in Arlington at 4pm if you're really serious. Trust.
Teams that go to war among themselves in the fourth quater....generally lose.
It's too close to the end for the infighting.
Town
There's no "infighting" because you have to be on the team to "infight" in the first place. The only reason NMP is now saying "Let me share touching canvassing stories" is because she's being questioned on how she can be this Obama canvasser and phonebanker with this extreme negative attitude towards him and his campaign strategists. And she may very well be an Obama canvasser; I saw lots of them walking down Glebe Road yesterday when I was in Arlington.
At this point, complaining about Obama should have done or what ads he should have run is stupid because he's done all he can do. It's up to the people at this point. Again, I don't feel it's "war within the team" because you gotta be on the team in the first place to fight within it. IMO NMP is a fair weather teammate --- she's there when the team is winning but the first one defecting when the chips are down. And trust, she WILL be the first one running up on this blog Wednesday morning if Obama loses screaming about how if he had run his campaign the way SHE suggested, he would have won.
Well since she has all this vast campaign knowledge, maybe she needs to put all those suggestions to good use and get out there and help the Democrats strategize for 2010 -- they could use help for the Governor's race.
I think you both are making good points. That said, strategy arguments are best left to Wed morning.
I have been pissed at McCain's strategy for a while now. But tomorrow morning, you won't know it.
And to NMP, even if you disagree with the line's direction, hold it anyway.
Town
Who ran what ad at what time in what part of the state shouldn't really be a concern at this point. Obama and McCain have done all they can do.
What's of more concern as far as Virginia goes is the lack of polls in the minority areas of the state. People are fearing that what happened in Chesterfield County during the primaries will happen statewide. NAACP is suing the state, Tim Kaine says his hands are tied.
It's going to be VERY close in Virginia. It won't be any of this 11+ business. Unless it's a straight up blowout for Obama, it's going to come down to a couple of thousand if not a couple of hundred of votes. Virginia 08 = Florida 00. Virginia has a history of extremely close races; Webb won over Allen by 7000-9000 votes. Creigh Deeds lost to Bob McDonnell for attorney general by 323 votes out of almost 1.5 million +/- cast.
Depressing the electorate with tales of woe could end up costing either man by a couple of hundred votes, just because they thought their man made a mistake so hope is lost. THAT'S why I'm hot with NMP...negative attitudes are infectious and because of Virginia regularly having close elections we don't need that shit at this point in time.
Long as they're not in/around Hampton Roads, it's all good. If McCain holds there, I won't feel like the day was completely wasted.
pjamma
Thank you, D. This argument is stupid.

dawn (love your name)... you need to chill. i do understand your point about being an original supporter of barack obama's--i am one of those as well. it irritates e to no end to hear these folks (usually someone black) on television 'reminding' people that during the primaries, "most blacks supported hillary, blahblahblah..." THEY DON'T SPEAK FOR ME! I DIDN'T SUPPORT HILLARY! I HAD FAITH IN THIS BLACK MAN AND HIS ABILITY FROM THE BEGINNING, SINCE 2004! i went on one blog during the primaries--'the field negro'--and he was so negative towards obama and his chances (this was back in february or so) that after i gave him a piece of my mind a few times, i just stopped going on there, and thankfully, found a more positive blog to participate in. but that's all in the past.
so keep volunteering... keep your faith in barack obama and his ability (and your own) to change this country. because he's gonna make it, and so are we all.
