Once the Obamas move in the White House, media coverage of the home life of this family will exceed anything that has ever been broadcast in this country, and America will not get enough of it.

I think you are correct, which is why I said this was the first Celebrity President. This is going to mirror usual politics with our celebrity culture. I think it's going to be crazy.

Sigh. Ok. I can appreciate your comment but let's be clear. You didn't present your initial response as one of questioning and wanting to understand anything. You said you had all the answers (being well-versed in feminism) and basically told me I wasn't entitled to my own thoughts because you didn't agree with them. It isn't about you. You have many places to go online and in person for a well-rounded take on the feminist movement, Black liberation theory and white privilege. I am under no obligation to bring you up to speed. Yes discourse is fine and not agreeing is fine, too. But your attitude was one was of privilege in that your thoughts were the dominant ones and you had to convinced of something to give it weight. You demanded I continue to engage you after I chose to decline. Which is my entire point. Humility goes far in learning something. Too many white people still insist on trying to tell Black people how they should feel or how they should
view something or what they should do. It's happened with the reaction to the passage of Yes on 8 and it happened to a lesser degree here. Just for another example, I recall when I first saw you posting at JJP you were telling the Admins how they should credit their pictures because they didn't meet the 'correct' standards as stated by you. But feel free to keep reading my blog.

Thank you H&F. I appreciate your comments and analysis. I do get that white feminists have too often made a huge error in not working in coalition with women of color. Big mistake, huge missed opportunity and a really stupid idea to continue to do so.

I appreciate your comment too because one of the reasons I come here to JJP is to be able to listen to voices like yours, even if I am a blabster myself. New York Jew, what can I say?

I like your blog too. We probably have more in common that you might think, particularly in the area of art and culture.

Yes. The whole "First Mom" thing rankles me just a bit. Now I understand why: to "soften" her, make her less of a so-called lightening rod, nonthreatening. It's like wearing the floral pattern dresses--and AFAIK, she can wear a cardboard box, rock it, and STILL be drop-dead gorgeous--their really emphasizing the soft and feminine. It's like the reason I read some Black men will wear brown suits instead of black to appear "nonthreatening." Politically, I don't blame that strategy one bit.

OTOH, I'd like to see the full range of Michelle: Lawyer, wife, Mom, daughter, aunt, professional, playful, funny, biting, corny, fashionista, no-nonsense, geeky, brainy while rocking the pearls, the pants, the suit, the jeans, the dress. I believe she has all of these traits, and then some. But she can only safely play up *some* of them, lest someone feel "uncomfortable"--or more to the point: threatened.

But I really believe she's up for the task. I don't think she was under any illusions about what this would all mean for her and the responsibilities she'd have. I've met President Obama before (when he was a Senator) and was impressed, but I think I'd really have to check myself if I ever met her because I'm in total awe of her. :<)

It's apparent that mainstream feminists have been fighting for an unfamiliar cause. See, feminism, is not the ability for a woman to choose between a career or a family. At its most fundamental level, feminism is the ability to recognize that there shouldn't be a choice at all.

Y'all simply don't understand the MEDIA!! All of the media people puffing around the "First Lady-elect" about progress on the future of the "first dog" and school selection, and other domestic fluff is simply excited anticipation by the media to the day when the Obamas actually move into the White House. The media is not waiting breathlessly for a replay of the Kennedy era in technicolor. No siree bob! What the media is all excited about is anticipation of a REAL LIFE, LIVING BREATHING 4 years of the Huxtables in the White House in wide screen, high def. America loved the Cosby show and lived through every episode in a loving respectful way right up until the final episode. It is no mistake that there is a close correlation between the Obamas and the Huxtables. Both husbands and wives are college educated professionals with young children, who are both dedicated to raising each child to reach its highest potential. Once the Obamas move in the White House, media coverage of the home life of this family will exceed anything that has ever been broadcast in this country, and America will not get enough of it.

Well I don't think making a comment obligates me to engage in an entire discourse when the person raising objections already says they've studied the subject thoroughly (feminism), focuses on part of my comment "feminist industrial complex", compares it to something that has a different set of parameters (the military) and ignores the bulk of my position: which is that a lot of white women use "feminism" when it's convenient but are not necessarily interested in equality. But since you INSIST: Hence the infamous Steinem article from Jan 08 about how sexism trumps racism when she supported HIllary and used the media to display her anger and huge sense of entitlement that it was a (white) woman's turn...just because.

Let's go down the list: Joan Walsh, Geraldine Ferraro and a host of other white women all said the same thing and this was during the time the Clintons started race baiting. Ferraro took it even further and blamed Black people (focusing on Black male reporters claiming NO ONE talked about sexism and were giving their tacit approval of it). It backfired for many reasons, one of which is that there are women who are Black and we were not even brought into the conversation but we were attacked and insulted. Another reason is that is simply wasn't true: plenty of Black people talked about and denounced sexism but that got in the way of their whining about how unfair it was to compete on a level playing field.

They wanted deference, they wanted to fall back on their white privilege. So when I use "industrial complex" it is intentional because when you tie something around a cloak of privilege you are benefitting from it and profiting from it. Look at how many Blacks are in the Senate or Governors (zero). Look who got themselves attached to Affirmative Action after all the blood had been shed. Do some research that isn't based on a privileged white-centric class-specific perspective.

If one's mind has already made up why would I wish to argue about a subject?

Look at who is presenting this latest ridiculous story about how FLOTUS Obama must be "giving something up" or is somehow diminished. It doesn't take the historical context of those descended from slaves value the traditional family structure. Our ancestors weren't allowed to have one. Not when you were legally defined as 3/5s of a person and listed on property records next to the cows. Not after Emancipation when the backlash resulted in mass lynchings of men, women and children. Not when the main source of employment for a Black woman last century was to be a domestic, raising somebody else's kids, working 16 hour days for as much as $2/hr 6 days/week. Often sexual abuse was going on there as well as further continuance of the rape of enslaved women (Don't believe me: go do some research and check the census records). Of course we weren't considered "real" women. Both parents HAD to work, not because the women felt the need to be liberated or the men
were lazy but because it was a matter of survival.

It was white women who wanted "liberation". Black women wanted to the boot off the neck first. Meanwhile they still enjoyed all the privileges that befit their status under white male supremacy. First wave to present when push comes to shove the leader of the day choose their advancement at the expense of anything else. Michelle Obama chose to have a family, chose to support her husband and choosing to make her own path. She is not Hillary. Her ambition and desire for power do not drive her. She is not competing against her husband. She did not choose a weak willed man who will embarrass her with public disclosure of his numerous indiscretions. They are not elite. They are just ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

Your response is rather provocative and takes away from a serious matter. I don't think using a sexual analogy is appropriate if you are actually interested in having a real conversation.

Well I don't think making a comment obligates me to engage in an entire discourse when the person raising objections already says they've studied the subject thoroughly (feminism), focuses on part of my comment “feminist industrial complex”, compares it to something that has a different set of parameters (the military) and ignores the bulk of my position: which is that a lot of white women use “feminism” when it's convenient but are not necessarily interested in equality. But since you INSIST: Hence the infamous Steinem article from Jan 08 about how sexism trumps racism when she supported HIllary and used the media to display her anger and huge sense of entitlement that it was a (white) woman's turn…just because.

So when I use “industrial complex” it is intentional because when you tie something around a cloak of privilege you are benefitting from it and profiting from it. Look at how many Blacks are in the Senate or Governors (zero). Look who got themselves attached to Affirmative Action after all the blood had been shed. Do some research that isn't based on a privileged white-centric class-specific perspective.

If one's mind has already made up why would I wish to argue about a subject?
