The Moment We Knew: Barack Obama Wins Virginia & The White House

Okay, so it's the end of a very emotional and historical week. I haven't said anything b/c there's been so much going on that I cannot work together all my feelings and thoughts but, I'll try (everyone else has given it a shot):

    -President-Elect Barack Obama

When Keith (I call him Keef) Olbermann called it at 11pm Tuesday night, it felt like this huge weight of anxiety lifted off my chest and I was just so overcome with emotion. I knew that I would cry, I just didn't know that I would react in the way that I did. I couldn't be happier or more proud of my country than I was that night. Needless to say, I needed a large cup of vodka and cranberry juice to calm my nerves when I came home from work to watch the coverage.

    -Exit Poll on Proposition 8

I think everyone on all sides of this issue are getting just a tad bit too heated. I guess I would never really understand the strong feelings b/c I am not homosexual. I am indifferent I guess. I could give a damn who you marry, b/c it won't have anything to do w/ how my husband and I live our marraige and raise our child. Do what you want in the privacy of your own home as long as you're not a serial killer or a pedophile (that you can't do in the privacy of your own home).

I look at the results of this exit poll, and I think it is a little misleading for certain bloggers and news organizations to go on with this negative and misleading story blaming black people for the passage of this proposition. The numbers don't lie. 70% of the 224 people SURVEYED said that they voted yes. It is pretty silly to me to allow 224 (actually 157) people to represent the millions of black voters in the electorate. End of story.

-Barack Obama is not really black, but biracial.

He says that he is a black man with a white mother from Kansas. If that is how he identifies his racial background so be it. Please stop trying to put your own label on a man that has already come to terms with who he is and has labeled himself as African-American (hell, in it's purest definition). This country is in the shitter and we've got bigger fish to fry than trying to place even more labels on this guy.

    -Rahm Emanual

From the litte bit I've been reading, he seems like a cutthroat guy who gets shit done. Fine w/ me. Do what you need to do to get things back on track. All hands on deck to get our country back. Quit yer bitchin' (I'm looking at you Joe Scarborough) already. There's is plenty of opportunity for bi-partisanship in other positions in the Administration.

    -Sarah Palin

This woman is still in the news?!?!?! Please go away. And don't forget to put the tags back on all those clothes. That is all.

Sorry if that was too long.

rikyrah: Found this interesting - speaking of "WORLD REACTIONS" to President-Elect Obama's VICTORY!

    OBAMA INSPIRES AFRO-BRAZILIANS!

It is likely that no group of people anywhere in South America are watching the rise of Barack Obama as the first black US president as passionately as in Salvador, Brazil.

Salvador, on the northeast coast of the country, is Brazil's third largest city with about 2.8 million inhabitants, over 80 per cent of whom are defining themselves as black of mixed race.

Most people from the city are direct ancestors of the first four million slaves who were taken to the city in the 16th century from what is modern-day Nigeria.

Salvador was the main entry point for slaves for the entire region, and was the colonial capital of Brazil until 1763.
And today, it retains a strongly African feel, with the food, culture, and music drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

    SKIP

    Political hopes

Salvador is the capitol of the state of Bahia, a particularly poor region where income disparity is stark and political power consolidated in the hands of the non-black ruling elite.

According to official statistics, 40 per cent of the population lives at or below minimum wage level while less than one per cent earns more than 20 times the minimum wage.

None of Salvador's political elite are black, so many here see Obama's victory as a model to achieve political power.

"In Salvador more than 80 per cent of the population is black, and we live in the worst conditions," said Marcos Rezende, a young community organiser who was watching the US election results come in with several dozen others on television on Tuesday.

"The victory of Barack Obama has immense importance for us because all our local black candidates in the elections always lose.

"He has shown us black people we can bring this kind of influence in holding political power in the future, that yes we can also govern anywhere in the world".

Brazil has never had a black president of its own, despite the fact that 47 per cent of the 190 million Brazilians define themselves as black or of mixed race.

"Obama is not only going to influence the US, he will influence the politics around the world - and especially here in Brazil," said Lindinalva de Paula, who was also watching Tuesday night's results on local television.

"For the black community here, it represents advancement for us as well - and makes us think seriously of the possibility in Brazil of having a black president."

On November 20 Brazil will celebrate the National Day of Black Awareness – and at least here in Salvador – given the new president of the US - this year that will take on a little extra significance.

"Black children that do not understand politics now see Obama as president on the TV and realize that someone of their colour is president of the most powerful country in the world," says Rezende.

"These kids will say, 'I want to do it too. I can do it. I hope to be the president of Brazil.'"

SARAH PALIN SPENT $40,000 On Luxury Goods For TODD

Washington Post's Reliable Sources column reports on more Palin clothing expenditures, this time for Todd:

On top of the $150,000 first outlined in Federal Election Commission filings, Palin spent "tens of thousands of dollars" on additional clothing, makeup and jewelry for herself and her family, including $40,000 in luxury goods for her husband, Todd, our colleague Michael Shear reports. The campaign was charged for silk boxer shorts, spray tanners and 13 suitcases to carry all the designer clothes, according to two GOP insiders.

    Ayers Hit Back At McCain

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1108/Aye...

Bill Ayers writes of his "surreal" year in In These Times

He notes, with mixed emotions, that this campaign was probably the last to even attempt to refight the battles of the '60s.

But Ayers can't let them go.

Hitting back at McCain, he calls the Republican nominee's bombing runs as a Navy pilot "immoral."

    Ayers writes:

The '60s - as myth and symbol - is much abused: the downfall of civilization in one account, a time of defeat and humiliation in a second, and a perfect moment of righteous opposition, peace and love in a third.

The idea that the 2008 election may be the last time in American political life that the '60s plays any role whatsoever is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, let's get over the nostalgia and move on. On the other, the lessons we might have learned from the black freedom movement and from the resistance against the Vietnam War have never been learned. To achieve this would require that we face history fully and honestly, something this nation has never done.

The war in Vietnam was an illegal invasion and occupation, much of it conducted as a war of terror against the civilian population. The U.S. military killed millions of Vietnamese in air raids - like the one conducted by McCain - and entire areas of the country were designated free-fire zones, where American pilots indiscriminately dropped surplus ordinance - an immoral enterprise by any measure.

PE Obama calls Nancy Reagan to apologize about presser comment.

LOL! No, I guess this is serious...I shouldn't laugh but...whatever...stay away from the jokes dude!

    T.
  • evita
I never thought Reagan earned the pedestal he was put on. I don't care about what Obama said... And Nancy is old enough not to care much either.
  • posey
I did not like the mutt comment at all. If you read liberal predominantely white blogs, they are actually saying that Obama is not really "black" because of his white mother, and why can"t he say he is Bi-Racial? I feel they are already trying to take away his blackness and in doing so denying African Americans their right to be proud of Obama as the first African American President.
I have seen black women and men argue that Obama consider himself a black man just to be shot down. All of the sudden they want to claim him all to themselves. Sick of it.
  • caligirl
didn't like the comment either, but moreso because it really just wasn't funny. he sounded like he was trying to lighten the mood and it fell flat. but, hopefully people can just cut him some slack. it was his first official presidential press conference... i could sense the tension in that room through the television screen, so you KNOW he felt it! i think it's gonna take all of us some time to allow this new situation to sink in.

pres-elect barack obama has stated many times that he is a black man. i take him at his word.
  • CraigHickman
    Huh?

We can all claim Obama for ourselves. He doesn't belong to anyone.

We're all mutts, more or less.

We are not victims unless we choose to be.

Being proud isn't a right, and even if it were, no one could take it away from you.
  • Val
    I agree with you 100%
  • TRW
I agree. I guess I am missing something here. Obama has a bi-racial ethnicity and a multi-racial upbringing. I have heard bi-racial friends (White/Black) refer to themselves as Black and as mutts. I didn't think anything of it then, and I don't think anything of it now.

I feel like if people start to over analyze things they will drive themselves crazy.
  • posey
I have every right to be Proud of the First African American President and while he is everyone's President now ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE that does not take away the fact that while Obama acknowledge he is bi-racial , he also consider himself a Black Man. Nothing wrong with that.

For example, when he said " Brothers need to pull their pants up" who do you think he was addressing?
  • CraigHickman
I guess I was using "right" in its constitutional connotation. But yes, everyone has a right to their feelings and states of mind.
  • T.
Like I replied to Miranda below Craig, I found it funny. Never thought it meant anything UNTIL I saw what was going on in the blogs. Even mainstream blogs. It seemed like manna from heaven to some folks...I personally don't care BUT some people appear to...especially some of the ethnic majority who are seizing on to the comment for whatever reason...others think it was politically incorrect...

    T
  • Val
    T agreed.
  • CraigHickman
A person can refer to themselves however they want to. He didn't malign anybody else by calling himself a mutt.

Let the folks carry on. I guess they'll be asking for him to resign before he even gets started.

I laughed when he said it, just like you did.
  • T.
    CH, Want more fun?

1)Wed. night. Asst Managing Editor of Newsweek appeared somewhere. His words were "and then it was after he moved to Chicago that he decided that he was a black man". DECIDED? And that is after he called PE Obama "creepy", "culty".

2)Tue. night. Matt Bai from New York Times magazine appears somewhere. When asked about Obama's capacity for anger. Response? "You have to remember that he did not have a typical AA upbringing..." So I started to ask myself, "What is a typical AA upbringing? Only AA with that typical upbringing is capable of showing anger?"

Matt, in an article written some time ago, has also suggested the Obama is still struggling with racial identity issues.

3)Doris Kearns Goodwin on the Today show on Thurs:"You have to remember that Obama is more exotic while Michelle is from the typical AA home..."

    I'm literally rolling my eyes...

    T.
  • CraigHickman
Well, Barack called his beloved grandmother a typical white person. My husband tends to refer to certain of his characteristics as typical Dutch.

What's interesting about Doris Kearns Goodwin is that she suggested a typical AA home is one with two strong parents, one of whom went to work everyday, even with a disability, who made sure their children got good educations

I guess typical in these contexts don't bother me so much but I certainly understand why it can sound like nail on chalkboard.
  • Justice58
    I'm literally rolling my eyes...

    So Am I.......Ughhhhhhhhhh
  • Quanli
Yeah it is all over the place. Who knows if he will address it, with other matters of importance going on, but they are already stealing from him and us by being on this trip. We all witnessed them treating him like any other n*gger during the primary season. Everyone knows McCain's supporters weren't pissed off about some harmless, "not really black" man. No telling what else the President-Elect has gone through in his daily life with the skin he's in yet they won't even let him wear the title of black man for fear it might give one of us too much credit? He can bare all the mistreatment and unfairness that comes with being black when it's convenient for them, but when he's doing well--they strip it away? It's an insult.
  • CraigHickman
I think you're giving them too much power.
  • Quanli
Maybe I am, but you know it's only been a few days.
  • T.
CH, This may also provide some entertainment relief m'luv. Read the comments too.

    T.
  • CraigHickman
I've heard black people say much the same thing about Barack. With a different agenda, of course, but still.

    Pure entertainment to be sure.

Those who deny that Barack is black, for whatever reason, cannot deny that he's African American in the truest sense of the descriptor.
  • APeach
OK, I saw that pic on "Yes We Can...Hold Babies" and I tell you, I just can't look at that website anymore. I just can't.

Because I will never stop crying. And doggone it--I've been crying all week!!! :) I will have to walk around with tissue bonded to my hands. That is such a fantastic picture, and every time I look at it, my heart is full. And just when I think that a picture of children can't move more than another, I find one.

By the way, I just saw this re: how Joe Biden feels about Michelle Obama:

The Delaware senator raved about future first lady Michelle Obama, calling her "the most impressive person I've met in 35 years."

"I like him. I LOVE her," he said of the Obamas.

Sounds like what a lot of Black folks said about Michelle. Maybe Barack should have a little chat with Joe...! :<)

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2008/11/bi...
  • T.
I howled with laughter today at PE Obama's self-deprecating humor when he referred to himself as a "mutt", while discussing the family's choice of a dog. I thought it was quite funny. But apparently his comment may have far-reaching racial consequences for black people. You see his reference could mean two things. Is he is referring to the fact that he has mixed race parentage, or is he referring to the fact that he is a man born of simple means? Apparently the media and some right wing blogs are all atwitter about this reference, kinda sorta suggesting that it is a "racial gaffe". Some right wing blogs are now saying that if he refers to himself as a "mutt" them maybe he's saying that he's not really "black" and that he probably should call himself "biracial". Joe Klein commented that he "self identified" as mutt. OH.MY.GOD!!!!!! LOL!

    T.
    What's up my people?
  • Miranda
Lawd have mercy....LOL.....well.... the "terrorist fist jab" was fair warning...we cant say we didn't see it coming.
  • T.
Miranda m'lady. LOL! Crazy BUT if in fact he was referring to race, I must add this: for someone who so studiously avoided the explicit talk of race throughout the entire contest, it would be quite surprising that he would use a term that can so easily be manipulated by the media and others.

He MUST be aware that many people were not amused by all the images of black folk celebrating and so they will do anything to tamp down our pride in his amazing victory. If he wants to talk about race, assuming that he was referring to race, he needs to continue with his usual MO or be more careful in his choice of words; otherwise he risks bloggers writing stuff like this from Ben Smith's blog:

"He told a couple of fairly edgy jokes, as these things go, one about Nancy Reagan, and one describing himself as a "mutt" — a reminder that he is bringing a loose, comfortable and unstilted way of talking about race to the highest office in the land. "

or people making comments such as this on NYT Caucus Blog:
"maybe he will now call his wife a purebred"

or what Joe Klein said above.

    T.
  • CraigHickman
Let folks parse his words and (over) analyze them till their hearts are content.

    It keeps a dialogue going.

rikyrah: Bringin' some "stuff" DOWN FROM ALASKA:

    1. ALASKA CORRUPTION BLOGSPOT [They're WATCHIN'!!]

    2. Sarah Palin's Record on ALASKA Native and Tribal Issues

After struggling over this one, I'm going to go ahead and just post it, and let you make up your own minds.

Sarah Palin's Record on Alaska Native and Tribal Issues

This document has been floating around, and is factually true. But the other fact is, our governor is very good at staying off the record on important Alaska Native issues. Or any Alaska Native issues, really. I refer you to my earlier posts (below or to the right) to view where her lack of attention has gotten us, as Alaskans and Alaska Native people.

    This document asserts that:

    1. Palin has attacked Native subsistence fishing
    2. Palin has attacked Native subsistence hunting
    3. Palin has attacked Alaska Native tribal sovereignty
    4. Palin has attacked Alaska Native languages

This is not new, but I think "Palin's administration" or "Palin, through her staff" is the most accurate wording. Palin has released only a "supportive" letter to Alaska Native people during her campaign for governor, and other than that has remained publicly silent on Alaska Native issues.

The Alaska Native languages attack, for instance, was actually on an issue I've covered here before - the Yup'ik language ballot. In this instance, "Bethel and the State of Alaska" fought against providing Yup'ik voting materials to the highly Yup'ik area of Bethel. The Lt. Governor, Sean Parnell, is listed as one of the defendants, but not Palin directly. She's done this many, many times before (most notably in the Troopergate investigation,) - letting her people take care of the highly controversial issues, while she visibly takes on highly popular issues (gas pipeline, $1,200 checks to all Alaskans.)

For those of you who do not know Alaska, Alaska Native people make up nearly 20% of the population. To say something publicly against solid Alaska Native issues would be devastating to a campaign - and we vote to the tune of 90% in some boroughs.

Again, the facts of this document are true, I'm just a bit cautious about saying "Palin believes this" about anything that she will come in and say "Oh, but that was my staff, not me" on. Which she has done. Frequently.

Frequently.

    3. (ALASKA) Women Against Sarah Palin

SEE the pic under the article "YES WE CAN". A sista is cryin' !

This is the philosophy of the author of the blogspot: About Me

    womenagainstsarahpalin
We are not in the habit of criticizing women in the public sphere, as we usually feel we should support our female compatriots with as much encouragement as we can. However, Sarah Palin's record is anti-woman. Feminism is not simply about achieving the power and status typically held by men. It's about protecting and supporting the rights of women of all classes, races, cultures, and beliefs. Palin's record and beliefs do not align with this. She was chosen by John McCain specifically because he believes that American women will vote for any female candidate regardless of their qualifications. He is wrong.

GreenLady you have to know that, for reasons that only a good psychoanalyst can describe, GOPers have this need to find an "Us vs Them" theme throughout EVERYTHING. They sincerely like war. They really do. They think there's some sort of dignity in being the big bad bully superpower and so any hint, I mean, any tiny, atomically small, fraction of a perceived slight against the USofA, and they holler THEY HATE US!! And heaven knows they want to good fight with Russia...its a longing that you and I will never understand, and that's a good thing. Like I said, only a good psychoanalyst can really break it down, but I just chalk it up a tiny wee-wee.

We drew down under Clinton. Only cost us, oh, 4000 or so lives between Somalia, Khobar, the Cole, and 9/11.

I'm sorry, but I'd rather not return to 9/10/01.

And, let's remember that Obama will be swearing to preserve, PROTECT and DEFEND.
  • Monie
Now it is all Clinton's fault. Is there blame to go around...maybe.

Did the Bush administration drop the ball prior to 9/11----absolutely. i firmly believe it did not occur "out of nowhere."

    Let me remind you...

The FAA received 52 WARNINGS about Al Qaeda's hope to attack airlines between April and September 10,2001 ( during Bush's term and in between his many vacations).

From a Washington Post article detailing the urgent calls to Condi Rice TWO months before 9/11

On July 10,2001 George Tenet met with Condi Rice and J. Cofer Black about numerous communications intercepts and other top secret intelligence that Al Qaeda would soon attack the US

He did not know when, where or how, but Tenet felt there was too much noise in the intelligence systems. Two weeks earlier, he had told Richard A. Clarke, the National Security Council's counterterrorism director: "It's my sixth sense, but I feel it coming. This is going to be the big one."

But Tenet had been having difficulty getting traction on an immediate bin Laden action plan, in part because Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld had questioned all the National Security Agency intercepts and other intelligence. Could all this be a grand deception? Rumsfeld had asked. Perhaps it was a plan to measure U.S. reactions and defenses....

Tenet and Black felt they were not getting through to Rice. She was polite, but they felt the brush-off. President Bush had said he didn't want to swat at flies....

Rice seemed focused on other administration priorities, especially the ballistic missile defense system that Bush had campaigned on. She was in a different place.

Tenet left the meeting feeling frustrated. Though Rice had given them a fair hearing, no immediate action meant great risk. Black felt the decision to just keep planning was a sustained policy failure. Rice and the Bush team had been in hibernation too long. "Adults should not have a system like this," he said later.
  • D.
I wasn't referring to Medvedev's words; I was referring to his actions. Which to me, read as "f--k you" to Obama, not to Bush (who, lest we forget, is on his way out the door!).

See what I said to June below: ample time had passed between the announcement of negotiations for this defense shield and now. If a message needed to be sent to Bush, it could have been sent by now. Just like I said about Obama's actions once, there's more to read from the when something is done than there is from the how/why it's done.

Obama's mind's in the right place: fixing the economy. I do kinda wish he'd tell Medvedev "f--k you" back, but that's just me.
  • GreenLadyHere
D: Which to me,; but that's just me.

  • Monie
D., you know that this is also a reaction to the Bush administration's circling of Russia with missile systems......and quite naturally, the lame duck is no where to be found or at least heard from.
  • JunePearl
Ditto. Russia's reaction is really aimed at all Americans. Not Obama in particular. If we had a real leader in office, I wouldn't feel quite so wary, about this...but we have Bush...
  • D.
If that's the case, then why did Russia's announcement come after the election...especially considering that the US/Poland agreed to put systems in place back in February?
  • JunePearl
Because if Russia had said anything before the election no one would have been paying attention. It would have served as a blip on the radar of our focus. Remember, we were tending to election mania. If you want to be heard, you do it after something big happens, not before.

In summation, I believe they waited until after the election because they are attention hogs.
  • D.
    True, it is.

But there's not a whole hell of a lot Bush can do about it, at this stage in the game.

I halfway wonder would this have happened if McCain won, but that's not my main concern. My biggest worry is that as the days go on, more and more of this type of behavior is gonna start to show up. It proves Biden's statement, but you can't help but be a little concerned...
  • Monie
After the exclamation of "We are all Georgians," I am sure that the same thing would have occurred.

Like you've said many times before, history has told us that "tests" occur irregardless of who is in office. The Bush administration were given many, many warnings before 9/11....and the country even experienced the Cole bombing during the 2000 presidential campaign, so we knew fundamentalist activities were rising....so the inaction of Bush was blaring. Remember, Bush spent a LARGE portion of his first months of the presidency on vacation ( I think it was even reported as a record for a president).

Of course now we live in a very different world where our leaders are alert and take nothing for granted. And I am convinced that the departing Bush administration and the incoming administration are
    not taking anything for granted.
  • D.
My concern is that if you get too much stuff popping off at once (Russia's already acting a fool, so let's say China joins them, Israel preemptively/preventatively attacks Iran, and al-Qaeda emerges from some hole somewhere), it could become a lot difficult for him to deal with.

I won't question Obama's vigilance (yet; he does have bigger problems with the economy).
  • Monie
Well you know it was reported that a foreign entity hacked into both McCain and Obama's computer systems over the summer so there is obviously those who are "interested" in US policy regardless.

McCain actually concerned me more because began to become more hawkish and erratic and basically surrounded himself with the far-right Bushies which helped cost him the election.

Bush does not even compare in intelligence to Obama. I mean let's be honest---Bush was unmistakenly a wild frat boy whose Ivy League education was a result of legacy. He ran an oil company into the ground...and quite frankly rode into the Texas governorship off of the Bush name...which is very powerful in business circles and connections.

I don't think Bush ever clearly had ideas of his own., the presidency was always an endeavor that was way over his head...he was mostly th poster boy of the presidency and Cheney and the hawkish PNAC were the brain trust.

But the bottom line is, Obama is very calm, collected, pragmatic, and decisive. Both the Clintons and McCain learned that they just couldn't shake him...and I think other leaders know that---some admire it and some are not sure waht to make of it. At this point, I think that's an asset honestly.

Obama is a smart man who has studied international relations, has a keen sense of history and an added plus of being a "minority" And believe it or not, being a minority is resonating loudly to leaders like Chavez or even Ahmedinajad (sp?)---I am not saying it will completely change their policies, but it does alter their perceptions at least for now. And I think that should be taken advantage of by his incoming administration.
  • D.
Those are all assets. But in some cultures, they can also be perceived as weaknesses. Calmness can easily be mistaken for aloofness.

My biggest problem with Obama has been in areas of foreign policy and how he would deal with countries like Russia and Iran. Reagan was able to talk the Russians down, but he made it completely clear that if it came down to it, he'd destroy them. Obama doesn't have that option (without going nuclear), so he needs to show strength from the beginning.

I understand that most are more concerned about problems here at home, but-as Obama said himself-the president should be able to deal with more than one thing at a time. Yes, the economy's a big deal, and I'm not trying to lessen its significance...but at the same time, other nations are seeing a window of opportunity to act fools, thinking we're at our knees.

And Obama should remind them that, current difficulties aside, we can still take care of business if/when we need to.
  • Monie
Whether you realize it or not, Obama is an academic who has ironically been studying Reagan extensively amongst others. Obama is very measured and pragmatic....I take comfort in that.

One of the things that has hurt this country more than anything in the past 8 years is credibilty and haste in dealing with our foreign policy.

Obama chose a great VP who is as experienced in foreign policy as McCain...though not as hawkish perhaps. McCain repeatedly said he wanted Russia kicked out of G-8 and other confrontational things even before he became ithe election was over---and you seem to endorse that ?! Now McCain/Palin would have been even scarier....Palin had NOTHING to offer McCain as far as consulting and thankfully the neo-CONS like Scheunemann will be away from the White House as advisors. It is time to build some international support aside from just Israel, plain and simple.
  • D.
...and part of doing that is showing our allies that we stand by them-especially when they're threatened.

I doubt I have to remind you of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which Poland and the Czech Republic both signed.
  • Monie
When did Russia threaten Poland and czech republic outright?

My understanding is that the Bush administration brokered these missile systems in those countries in an effort to guard against Iran and other threats---while unfortunately also giving the impression of encircling Russia.

And now post-Georgian conflict and heightened tensions, Russia apparently wants to build their own missile in response.

Is that good for our relations with Russia--probably not.

Is Russia's actions reactive to our own policies--YES!!
  • D.
    "Blame America first?"

Unless Russia's got it in their minds that they want to attack the US, why would they feel encircled? It's a DEFENSIVE system.
  • Monie
D., don't come at me with the same tired Republican meme...expressing dissent is somehow placing blame on America.

The tensions between Russia and Georgia...not to mention our $1 billion pledge to them in the aftermath of the conflict has created a tension on Russia's behalf, whether you think it is substantiated or not.

Believe it or not, according to reports most Czech citizens themselves opposed the missile system.

Check out this article from July

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/eur...
  • D.
You're the one who suggested our actions caused their reactions.

Let's try this: how would. YOU deal with them?
  • Monie
You started off by claiming WE are protecting Poland and the Czech Republic supposedly from Russia...which is unfounded since I don't recall any threat to them from Russia's behalf.

Not only is there suspicion about the missile system. but their is also a race from both the US and Russia on securing the upper hand as far as "black gold" or oil is concerned. And I particularly happen to think that the "energy" race has influenced our foreign policy more than anything.

But it is very worthy to note that a majority of Czechs did not even approve of this missile system---quite possibly because it leads to "Cold War" type tensions.

If missile had been placed by russia along the Mexican border, Cuba, Haiti and so forth, there would be an outcry on our behalf. PERIOD.

At this time becasue of the heightened tension, negotiations and talks are the prudent answer period. I am tired of hawkishness.

Our country financially and psychologically cannot afford more conflicts, especially not one with Russia.
  • D.
What is there to negotiate? The Poles have given permission, and the Czechs may well do so.

Since most of the schools they are considering are all girls schools I don't think we have to worry about the little dude on the court. I'm sure Malia's potential suiters will be brought in (maybe from the brother school, all prescreened, of course or sons of family friends). I think there is little chance she is just going to meet someone randomly in the next 8 years. Not to mention I'm sure Will Smith, P Diddy, Tom Cruise and every other celeberty with a son aged 10 to 12 are already lining thier little boys up to win Malia's heart.

The New York Times' website has a neat interactive map that lets you compare this past Tuesday's election returns to that of the 2004 election.

    http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/results/presi...

One really neat thing to take note of is the voting shifts feature. It can show you changes in voting patterns vs 2004 at the county level. Perhaps it is the best evidence of Howard Dean's 50 state strategy, as the overwhelming majority of individual counties/parishes showed a shift to Democrats. Some observations:

**For whatever reason, most of the counties in Tennessee, Arkansas, and southern Louisiana, and eastern Oklahoma tilted more Republican.
**Both Mississippi and South Carolina appeared to tilt more Democratic than Alabama did.
**In my home state of Alabama, folks north of Birmingham/Jefferson County favored the GOP more, joining most of Tennessee. Most of the counties south of B/JC tilted to the Dems. (A potential move to Montgomery looks even more promising.)

The tears continue. I remember the day when my paternal grandmother really gave me permission to cry. I was 8 years old, and I was sitting in her kitchen watching her make biscuits. She was kneading the dough with her knuckles, and I started to cry. I don't know why, but I started to cry.

Grandma Rena walked over to the counter and brought a box of tissue and set the box in front of me. I took one tissue, and she looked at me and said: "Child, I didn't give you the box of tissue to cry one tear; I gave you the box so you can cry yourself a river." So I am carrying a box of tissue with me.

Black Man Given Nation's Worst Job

    November 5, 2008 | Issue 44•45
    Article Tools

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation's broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, "It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can't catch a break."

There's some shady stuff going on in Alaska. We need to keep an eye out on that Senate election.
  • TruthSeeker
Yeap....the turnout is lower than 2004.
  • GreenLadyHere
rikyrah: That's WHY I have made my daily "Field Trips" to ALASKA! :>)

The UN-VETTED ONE is slick and "barracuda-driven" to try another way to get to DC.

    I'm WATCHIN' her!!

President-Elect Obama! First Lady Michelle! :>)
  • Justice58
    No kidding! Take a look:

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/washingtonpost...

Elections officials, party leaders and voters are wondering what happened this Tuesday in the Last Frontier, where turnout was surprisingly low and two lawmakers who have been the focus of FBI corruption investigations appear to have been reelected despite polling suggesting they would be ousted.

An Alaskan Blog: Stolen Election In Alaska

    http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/2008/11/06/st...

Something stinks. Not just an ordinary low tide smell. Not like something you’d blame on the dog. It smells like an infection. For me to plug my nose, I’d have to overlook some curious facts.

In Alaska, more people voted for George W. Bush in 2004 than for Sarah Palin on Tuesday despite an identical 61-36 margin of victory. Yes. Only four years ago 54,304 Alaskans got off their sofas and voted for Bush, but decided to sit home and not vote for Palin in 2008. In turn, I have to ignore the 30,520 Alaskans who felt progressive enough in 2004 to vote for John Kerry, but weren’t inspired to vote for Barack Obama. I would have to glance past the 1,700% increase in the Democratic caucus in February, the 20,991 newly registered voters, and the three largest political rallies in Alaska’s history. I would also have to forget the people I stood in a long line with to early vote. It would be helpful not to know every other presidential election since Alaska began keeping records has had a larger turn out than the one we just had with our own Governor on the ticket. Try not to remember 12.4% more Alaskans showed up for the August primary as compared to four years ago, before the Palin nomination. Don’t think about the Lower 49’s record voter turn out this year either. Try to delete the memory file, though difficult, that 80% of us approved of Sarah Palin just two months ago.

Something stinks. You don’t care? Obama won. Yes. He. Did! Free at Last! Wait. Democracy demands all of the votes be counted…if you can find them.

    WTF is happening?
  • GreenLadyHere
    Justice58: Good catch! :>)
  • CraigHickman
Alaska is the most corrupt oil company, ahem, I mean state, in the nation.

Alaska really is its own entity. It's really is not part of the United States and so many of its citizens actually would like to secede.
  • univofiowagrad2003
Great Point!!!! I think Palin is going to try and lurk in the shadows and appoint herself as senator...
  • Town
She can't appoint herself as senator. After the last crooked senator/governor appointed his daughter to the Senate, they changed the rules in Alaska to where you have to have a special election.

Now it wouldn't surprise me if she ran for the Senate in the special election. Sistah Sarah and Terror Todd got a taste of the lower 48 and got smoke blown up her ass coast to coast and they won't be content to hang out in Wasilla no more.
  • D.
She gets voted in as senator, and runs for president before she completes her first term.

God help me, but who does she think she is? The conservative Barack Obama?
  • Town
I've observed Barack Obama. Sarah Palin is not Barack Obama.

I do believe Sherri Shepherd is smarter than Palin.
  • msmartin
Ooh you are so wrong for that.
  • Acts Of Faith Blog
Have you watched the View? Unless there's a clip which I am selective about seeing I have permanently banned that biyacht-fest. She was actually considering voting for McCain because of Palin and her special needs child. They wouldn't have done jack for children when he voted down state funding for health insurance for kids. The stupidity just hurts my head too much.
  • GreenLadyHere
    h&f: Major co-sign!!

The UN-VETTED ONE is NOT properly caring for that child OR any of the other ones!

Who jumps out of the hospital bed AFTER 3 DAYS and runs back onto "bui'ness as usual??" NO CARING MOTHER!!!

EVEN ANIMALS NURSE and CARE for their YOUNG for a select LENGTH of TIME!! [And she tried to compare herself to a "pit bull or "pig!" THEY are BETTER THAN HER!!]

I would LOVE to read a TELL-ALL book from JUST 1 of her children!! [Speaking of which, the National Enquirer did NOT come through (from Alaska) like I anticipated. Hmmmm?]

    LAWD, I'm SOOOO HAPPY that she's a LOSER, I mean - she lost! NO! I mean she's a LOSER!!

President-Elect Obama!! First Lady Michelle! :>)
  • D.
    Not under any circumstances.
  • parker404
    Damn, Town. That hurt :)
  • djchefron
That is why true conservatives such as yourself need to fight for your party. If republicans keep going down the path of know nothing theocratic hillbillies then you will cease to exist.
  • D.
I'm slowly approaching the point of "f--k the GOP." They "change" they want is to drive out the moderates and go even further to the right.

Maybe after another drubbing in '12, they'll begin to see the light.
  • Nate_Wesley
Which did we hear more of in earnest: Moderate Democrats choosing to support McCain, or moderate Republicans choosing to support Obama?

If the GOP doesn't realize that they need a candidate that unifies people outside of its core base, then they're going to have problems. Sara Palin and people of her ilk are not the answer.
  • Town
Here's the thing: the Republicans who have differing opinions or who want to pump the brakes on what's going on are drummed out of the party. There's a real "you're either with us or against us" mindset.

If the GOP is to survive, you're going to have to get rid of the Rush Limbaugh Jesse Helms faction of the party. It's very telling that the GOP only won electorally in the South and in places like Idaho and the Dakotas. I don't know why Bobby Jindal is jumping up to plant his butt in Iowa because the same people who wouldn't vote for Obama because of his skin color aren't going to vote for Jindal because of his, GOP or not. And a lot of "misinformed" voters think that Indian = Muslim, when in most cases that's not the case.
  • D.
What we need is a strong, young, black conservative voice (besides Michael Steele).

Instead, all the black conservatives I've seen are all puss......um, punks.
  • djchefron
Even though we rarely agree and sometimes are interactions were angry rants I do respect you.If people like you leave without speaking out on the wrongs of your party then the theocrats will take over and we will truly have one party rule and even though it would be democratic that scares me even more because if we dont have an effective opposition then we to will become corrupt.
  • whiterosebuddy
There is some REAL shady stuff going on in GEorgia too!
We all saw those long lines, we all know about 10's of thousands of more registered voters...yet...the vote totals for the state are LESS than in 2004!!

What the hell is up with this aberrant tally?

No one is talking about how they have stole the election in GA....
  • Miranda
We were just discussing this today at the People's Agenda for the Black Revolution meeting (or rather when I went to lunch with my black co-workers, apparently we plan the revolution when we go to lunch together, or at least that's what the "looks" tell me).

If you look at the way the count went down, its obvous that Georgia is a blue state. Obama won Georgia, plain and simple. They totally stole this one in an attempt to hold on to the myth that he couldn't win one of the strangleholds of the GOP. Yes he won VA, NC and FL - yeah, those are southern states.....but if you really want to stick a fork in there, AL or MS or GA would do it. Georgia was the best shot and he did it. There will be a run-off for the Senate seat and I hope Obama or Biden comes down to help Martin out. We need it.
  • roschelle
you guys are awesome. these picture say more than anyone ever could. There is HOPE.
