I spoke to my Uncle. (The one who said the Obama is a cross between Robert Kennedy and Malcolm X.) He is a coin collector. He has coins going back to the 19th century.
He's usually suspect of coins advertised on television. He says that it's doesn't hurt to get the coins for memorabilia. However as part of a coin collection/investment item, it is probably not worth the investment.
(FYI, wheat pennies (pennies minted prior to 1959) are worth about 6 cents a piece and pennies minted after 1984 ain't worth a penny because is made of zinc.)

I splurged and got the British-made coin. The $37 version, not the solid gold baller edition. I also bought some of the Sun Times “Mr. President” edition from a frat brother in the Chi. I'm a little caught up in the history at the moment and unashamed to admit it.

Ain't buyin. No dis to those who do and Big up on the Obama coin, but how about a brother or sister on a coin we don't have to buy.
I'm not asking for a special edition Negro set, just a significant step to a correct view of black as Americana. I personally don't much like the symbols of statues and whatnot as they teeter on cult of personality, but they do serve an important psychological purpose short of that error.
Might not be bad for other folks to grow up seeing black folks and others on the most important symbols of our country. But, if you thought Obama's election caused race problems with the shameful strife and even deaths, try getting somebody (King, S. Truth, Tubman, Banneker) on the currency.
You still see what dust is kicked up when you talk about removing the Confederate flag, not from history, but from homage. I want the Confederate history to stand as reminder, but renaming Robt E Lee High School or putting MLK Avenue NOT in a black neighborhood would mean progress.
Those new coins in 2009 honoring the presidents? They include one who only served 30 days in office (harrison), one who thought the states should decide humanity of the negro (tyler), one who was a slaveholder his entire life (polk), and a slaveholder who had not held prior elected office (taylor).
Glad for Obama's presence, but we should continue to touch all quarters – not to change current folks minds but rather to seat the bases for the next generations.
