The Politico has just posted a story on Joe Lieberman's battle to hang on to his plum committee slot, but Politico kind of buries the lede. The real story here is that Lieberman's aides are now openly threatening Senate leader Harry Reid by saying that Lieberman will stop caucusing with Dems if his chairmanship is revoked:

“Senator Lieberman's preference is to stay in the caucus, but he's going to keep all his options open,” a Lieberman aide said. “McConnell has reached out to him and at this stage his position is he wants to remain in the caucus but losing the chairmanship is unacceptable.”
That's pretty clear cut. Lieberman's aide is leaking the threat that he wants to remain in the caucus but that losing his committee slot is “unacceptable” — meaning that he'll bolt the caucus if it happens.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has reached out to Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) about the prospect of joining the Republican Conference, but Lieberman is still bargaining with Democratic leaders to keep his chairmanship, according to Senate aides in both parties.

“Sen. Lieberman’s preference is to stay in the caucus, but he’s going to keep all his options open,” a Lieberman aide said. “McConnell has reached out to him, and at this stage, his position is he wants to remain in the caucus but losing the chairmanship is unacceptable.”

A Republican Senate aide said Friday morning that there was little McConnell could offer in terms of high-ranking committee slots, which is why Lieberman is resisting overtures from the Republican side.

I say put him on that committee that deals with the war veteran's issues (as a sub-committee chair), and make him go to Walter Reed on a weekly basis with Jack Murtha, to clean up any piss those vets are sitting in from unemptied bedpans.

I want Lieberman HUMILIATED. Perhaps he will be humble and more appreciative of his colleagues and think less of himself.

It would give great satisfaction to kick him to the curb ASAP.

It would give greatER satisfaction to let him twist in the wind and play with his mind.

Lieberman's power is caucusing with the Democrats but being able to skip off to the Republicans.

Lieberman's MO is to suck up to power. Lieberman sucked up to the Republicans because they had the power. They had the White House, they had Congress. What better way to stick it to the Democrats who didn't support him than to suck up to the Republicans?

And the Republicans were all too happy to let Joe suck their dicks so he could have a little bit of power.

He knew if the Democrats regained control, he'd lose his power, which is not in the chairmanships, but in being able to caucus with the Democrats but “threaten” to jump over to the Republicans.

That's why he was riding and dying for John McCain, not only because they are good friends, but because he'd only retain his little bit of power if John McCain won.

Well, he didn't. There's a new Democratic sheriff in town who has already hemmed him up. The Republicans are no longer in control. Lieberman could jump over to the Republicans and it probably wouldn't make a bit of difference. Without being able to have influence over the Democrats or Republicans, Joe Lieberman loses his power. That's why last week he was kissing Obama's ass — he knew the GOP was going down and he didn't want to go down with them. He wanted to curry favor with the Dem. side.

Neither side has much use for him and neither side can trust him. Sheriff Obama and Deputy Reid need to completely grind him down to the ground before the Connecticut electorate finishes him off and the best way to do that is to keep Lieberman nice and close and let everyone know Lieberman is Obama's bitch. They can't do that if they strip down Lieberman.
