60 Minutes aired its interview tonight with Barack and Michelle Obama, they're first interview since Obama won the presidential election. In the interview, Obama repeated his commitment to close Guantanamo Bay and ban torture in order to "regain America's moral stature in the world."
President-elect Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast Sunday that since terrorists might try to attack the U.S. during the White House transition, selecting his national security team is one of his top priorities.
"I think it's important to get a national security team in place because transition periods are potentially times of vulnerability to a terrorist attack," Obama told CBS' "60 Minutes." "We want to make sure that there is as seamless a transition on national security as possible."
In his first television interview since his historic election, Obama said he has spent the days since the election on short- and long-term issues, from doing "whatever it takes" to stabilize the economy, restore consumer confidence and create jobs, to getting sound health care and energy policies through Congress. The president-elect also said that as soon as he takes office he will work with his security team and the military to draw down U.S. troops in Iraq, shore up Afghanistan and "stamp out al-Qaida once and for all."

GreenLadyHere, I'll bet Barack played a few board games back in the day; Monpoly for one.
I can see Barack now, with the car piece landing on Board Walk, Park Place and all the utlities and railroads. Negotiating mortgages with other players who are 'bout ta loose their property. The only rule change now is: The Wall Street mofos aint getting outta JAIL FOR FREE!
CHICAGO — On the day he formally stepped down as Illinois' junior senator, President-elect Barack Obama released an open letter to state residents, saying they had taught him lessons he would draw on during his presidency.
Obama, whose resignation after nearly four years in the Senate was a formality in the wake of his Nov. 4 election victory, thanked Illinois residents in a nostalgic letter published in Sunday newspapers throughout the state.
"I will never forget, and will forever be grateful, to the men and women of this great state who made my life in public service possible," Obama wrote

how cool would it have been if ed bradley had interviewed the obamas? i miss him :(

Ed and Obama - how cool would that have been?
too cool for words.

Now rikyrah you know that would have been way too much for the haters to deal with. Much too much.
Alaska's Educational Crisis The ADN looks at an epidemic in Alaska:
Among the grim statistics:
• Alaska's dropout rate, at 8 percent, was double the national average in the 2005-2006 school year, according to the latest figures available from the U.S. Department of Education.
• 38 percent of today's ninth-graders will have no high school diploma 10 years from now, according to the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.
• Alaska ranks 50th, or last, in the number of ninth-graders who will likely have a bachelor's degree in 10 years, according to the commission.
Just as well they have a role-model governor who is dedicated to the education of her own children - oh wait:
Her eldest son has a history of vandalism and was given a GED on the way to Iraq;
her oldest daughter was removed from high school for a mysterious length of time last year and is now about to have a baby (due December 18, Palin told us);
her youngest daughter, Piper, missed school all fall because she was being carted around the country in Neiman Marcus underwear.
And the governor herself, of course, couldn't manage to stay in one college, graduated with a degree in sports journalism, cut her own town's library funds and leveraged the town's budget on a new sports stadium (with new house thrown in!).
Seriously: this woman is the future of Republicanism?
I still say: I don't believe she has a college degree.
Between now and the election, we will find out if she has that degree or not. Journalists just have to monitor Alumni journals. They will say class of OR former student (which means the degree was never conferred.)
Remember when there were actual news journalists? Makes me think- What's up with Meet the Press? Isn't it time to name the next guy?
By the way I'm cool with Alaska seceding, Texas too.
It is time to organize. Our white allies need to step up and speak out against this. They cannot allow this hate to stifle their voices, as they have way more than we have. THIS is the country we live in if we do not regularly speak out against hate. If they are our brothers in this struggles, then they must act. This is NOT a job for the NAACP. This is the job of the Unions, the Lions Club and what have you. THEY NEED TO CARRY THIS MESSAGE TO THEIR FAMILIES. This damn sure wasn't done by anyone Black or not white.
So pissed off about this.

I lived in a small town in Maine for many years and we used to have these silly precision teams, so I laughed and loved O for this photo because I knew exactly what kind of folks he was hooking up with here. Bless his heart. . . http://blogs.herald.com/dave_barrys_blog/2008/1... (funny picture kindness of Dave Barry of all people)
I wanted to see that but my partner said he wasn't in the "mood" for that movie, after we left he said he wished we saw the bee movie.
I would say save your money on "W" unless its a "bonus" movie.

I listened to the book on CD a few years ago. The lady who did the voice recording, did all the characters. It was transformingly delightful!
Queen Latifah Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, and Sophie Okonedo were fabulous.

That's so Malia! LOL! With parents like Michelle and Barack, these gils are gonna keep it real

do you guys know that sarah palin may get a book deal worth over 50 million dollars? what the fuck is she going to say in a book? and since when have her supporters been avid readers?
$50M seems a bit much. Even Hillary Clinton didn't get that much money. Of course if some publisher is stupid enough to pay her and the books fail too bad for them. I also head Joe the Plumber is getting a deal as well.
Miss- Opinion
Who said this book would have words? Trust, it will be pop ups and pictures. With a free blank page to draw and color.
spirit_55z
Hee,hee hee!, Miss-Opinion, it'll probably be sold as a set. The second book will be made of gingham cloth, as the hilbilly moms who purchase them will be able to eaily wash the BP&J and chil moose sauce before it stains the precious merchandise!
Rikyrah, co-signing. And, I wouldn't buy one even if I were offered a sitdown meal at the White House with The First Family Obama!
rikyrah
BWA HA HA HA HA HA H AHA

Nobody in publishing is going to pay that woman 50 million.
Found this in the comments over at Ta-Nehisi Coates about HRC as possible SOS:
First, this is classic Obama strategy, pure and simple. This guy is RUTHLESS. Obama is offering this to box her in and neutralize her power if she accepts it, and/or knock her down a peg and expose her if she doesn't. If she accepts, she is out of the Senate and her political power base is largely neutralized. It would be largely considered improper for her to politically engage as SoS. Right now, HRC is the *most* dangerous person to his administration. She poses the largest threat - forget Pelosi and Reid - it is HRC who would have the power to do the most damage if she were to decide to publicly criticize his administration and/or challenge him in 2012. If she's in the administration, she can't sh!t on it. AND, it gives her incentive to truly hope that the Obama administration is successful (and therefore not try to undermine it) whether or not she chooses to run in 2016 because her political future or legacy will largely depend on Obama's success (or failure).
If she chooses to turn him down, it just shows, once and for all that she's all about self. How would it look if the President-Elect personally asked her to serve her nation at a time of great national turmoil and she turns him down to stay in the Senate as the Junior Senator from NY? Seriously, what REAL excuse could she give to turn him down that wouldn't get her completely slayed in the media? That public lashing, if it were to happen would make her politically unviable for the forseeable future and if she did ever decide to criticize him after she declined a personal invitation to serve in the cabinet she would be laughed out of the room.
All in all, politics is a chess game and Obama is not just looking at the board as it is, but is looking at the board as it might be and anticipating many moves away. This just might be checkmate on HRC.
rikyrah: This is a GREAT POST! Annnnnnd it reminded me that I had been waiting sooo anxiously to be able to say - - - - - - CHECK MATE!! :>) :>)
I was soooo EXCITED on NOV. 4, that I missed saying it!! :>) :>)
Think I'll say it AGAIN - CHECK MATE!! Whew!!
That was E-A-S-Y!!! Annnnnnnd it FELT GOOD!!! :>)
spirit_55z
I am totally digging this post Ta-Neshi Coates. Barack is plaiyng with his Super Deluxe Chess Board too!
ljf
Oh yes Obama is ruthless. When I read how he defeated his first rival for his very election for public office, I was like Dayuuuumm. He won by disqualifying her signatures. I said to myself this mofo don't play. He is ruthless is so poetic. It is like listening to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" CD.
spirit_55z
Ijf, sure you right. Love this CD Love "Feddy Freeloader" too!
Odds on the dog. 30 70 doesn't happen aft jan 20 2010. I give them a year to get settled as Michelle said. Plus the look on her face said I'm not walking this dog in the "HAWK"

random thought #1: loved the interview. love them. we've got to keeping praying for this family and the secret service that protects them because crazy didn't go away on nov. 4, it just got angrier.
random thought #2: i was over at the huffpo and as usual everyone is gushing about the obamas and how great they are. however, i can't help but wonder when these people, who right now seem to love the obamas' dirty draws and are driving the tank while drinking gallons or kool-aid, will turn on him and call him everything but a child of God. obama's liberal white support has been fascinating to watch but i can't help but to think that it won't last and wonder what will it take to turn them against him. the obama love affair probably won't last among black folks either but we tend to be a little more forgiving of our own, sometimes to our detriment (o.j., kwame, etc.).
Quanli
I disagree on the extent of black loyalty. I think if OJ, yes, even OJ would have straightened up he would have been welcomed back with open arms. When blacks love you, they love you. I wonder more about liberal whites though because they can be more questionable than southern rednecks. At least with the rednecks you know where they stand at all times--liberals not so much.
rikyrah
I think either Marc Lamont Hill or Boyce Watkins did a piece on the lack of response from Black folks when OJ was convicted. One of the reasons they said that Black response was just about 'nil is because OJ hadn't shown appreciation for the support he was given the first time. He went back to ignoring the Black community, and we knew it, and said finally, ' we want your Black card back'.
Black folk don't wanna throw Black folk away....how else to explain that some folks STILL hold out hope for Uncle Clarence.
Quanli
Exactly! It was the lack of appreciation that did him in along with others, but it's not our first instinct to abandon our folks.
except that i'm really, really, really REALLY proud of them.
it will be wonderful to go to mexico wednesday and not have to fake a canadian or english accent like i've been doing for the last long eight years.
Si, soy Norteamericano! Barack Obama es presidente! muy bueno!

rikyrah: Been meaning to post this SHOUT OUT to "538's NATE SILVERS! THANK YOU for referring that site to me [back in the day - 'bout 6 months ago! :>)]
Earlier today Media Mob reported that political polling expert Nate Silver, the wunderkind statistician behind the Web site FiveThirtyEight.com, was out with a proposal for two books: one about the art of prediction and the other a Freakonomics-style guide to the mechanics of electoral politics. Mr. Silver's agent, Sydelle Kramer of the Susan Rabiner Agency, told publishers she wanted indications of interest by Tuesday, but evidently the indications came faster than expected (so much for the art of prediction) and Ms. Kramer decided to just hold an auction today.
According to several sources, that auction has ended, and Penguin Group USA has prevailed.
GOOD FOR HIS TALENTED SELF!!! :>) :>)

I'm so happy for Nate. He's been a true find this election season.

rikyrah: Me 2! :>) True Dat! :>)

OTOH, that fake plumber skinhead tax-dodging guy mentioned in one of the presidential debates has apparently signed a book deal with some small to the point of almost-nonexistent publisher (to be "co-written" by the author of the publisher's only other book from what I can tell). Apparently the fake plumber skinhead tax-dodging guy decided not to go with a larger press because, despite the strong interest that he claims the larger presses expressed, he's against that kind of thing...
(just feeling amused)
(not including a link bc I don't respect the fake plumber enough to give him any actual publicity)

I wonder what the mother of Michelle's roommate at Princeton have to say now. ..........remember, she didn't want her daughter rooming with a black girl!
This 60 Min interview is amazing. It has political and personal and they are both so real. I love this interview. Pure win. It has to be 1/2 hour.

Obama is brilliant. I realize he is defanging the Republican Party. He is doing this by 1) being bipartisan and putting Republicans in his cabinet. 2) He keeps referring to LIncoln and Lincoln approach to governance.
He is coopting the high idealism of the Historical Republican party. He is helping the Republican party move further to the right thus driving a wider wedge between the American electorate and the right wing idealogue.
His approach is so Zen
There is a saying in Sun Tzu "The Art of War"
"Therefore those who win every battle are not really skillful--those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all"
freespiritbty
Exactly right!! Obama is brilliant indeed! He's neutralizing any challengers in 2012 and beyond. His genius is breathtaking. He continues to change the game.

This Week With President-Elect Barack Obama Is Up:
P.S. I have an EXCUSE for knowing this song. 20, 000 years ago, when I was a high school Vice principal/principal, some of their relatives were attending school there. Annnnnnd, they arranged to have them PERFORM for the students! :>)

Miranda/rikyrah/Miss-Opinion: Ooooooo. K. Since Y'ALL ASKED!:
This sort of hit me this weekend. Obama is the first ' celebrity' President. I don't mean this in a bad way. I mean, this is the first Presidency that has met, head on, the celebrity culture in which we live. It's a little disconcerting seeing the Obamas on the cover of magazines like People, Life & Style, OK.
Yeah, isn't it strange? I'm not used to being a "fan" of the president or tripping over myself to find out what designer she's wearing, what school the little ones will attend, what do they eat for breakfast? boxers or briefs? etc. etc. It's strange.
GreenLadyHere
rikyrah: I bought the PEOPLE" magazine 2-day!! :>) :>) GREAT ARTICLE!! :>)
Miranda
This President actually has a CD.....and I don't mean with him reading a book....I mean his campaign has a billboard 100 top selling CD with Sheryl Crow, Alicia Keys, Kanye and Will.I.AM................Michelle wears a dress on The View and it sells out the very next day! Its such a wierd phenomenon because we tend to think of our politicians as old foggies, out of touch culturally with the NOW generation...but our President listens to Jay-Z and took his wife to see Do The Right Thing on their first date....EVERYBODY over 30 remembers when they saw that in the theaters! Its wierd having a President that really relates to people under 40.
rikyrah
And Malia and Sasha's dresses from Election Night have been big sellers too.
msmartin
One of those dress designers is an African American woman.
TruthSeeker
I guess that's why McCain went and got himself the beer commercial girl.
Did anyone else get loopy listening to them talking about the girls moving to the White House?
Miranda
Oh, I love this couple!!! I can see Michelle's face when she saw that apartment "oh, I KNOW he doesn't think I'm staying up in here!!"...LOL
rikyrah
I cracked up listening about his Senator's apartment.
The story about the car when they first met is hilarious. The car with the holes in it.
Miranda
I know Michelle just has to stop dead in her tracks sometimes and think "wow.....who'd a thunk....the guy with the hole in his car"
rikyrah
I love the story about him having the car with the hole in the floor. It's true because one of Michelle Obama's oldest friends is a talk radio personality here, and she talked about those old days. Barack Obama was a 'Broke Brotha', who spoke of high 'ideals', had no clothes, an apartment that if you sneezed, you were in the next apartment, and the car with the holes in it. Michelle married him because she loved him and believed in him. And, she wasn't afraid to carry the family financially on her back while Barack Obama ' did his thing'.
Smartest decision he ever made - marrying Michelle.
rikyrah
when he said the apartment near Harold's Chicken Shack, I cracked up.
Honey01
Ha! I almost died when he mentioned Harolds!
I also read that the Inauguaration planners are attempting to get Italian Fiesta delivered.
Justice58
Miranda, I was thinking the same thing! One never knows where life will take you! It's an amazing story!
rikyrah
I had to tell ' A Brotha', who was complaining that Barack 'could have done better'.
I was like, in what world?
Tell me, back in the ' me me me' 80's, what Black woman was listening to a Black guy, graduating from the top of his class from HARVARD, when he says, ' Baby, I'm gonna go back and help poor people'.
I was like, you gotta be kidding me.
Very few women, especally college educated women with a truckload of their OWN LOANS, was hearing that.
When Michelle heard and said, " OK", Barack knew what he had.
He knew that he had found the person for the long haul. The person to go to hell and back with him.
That guy sounds like a typical low quality black guy that spends the bulk of his time putting black women down but doesn't have his own s*it together.
Kat
Whaaaaaat? A beautiful, stylish, smart, well educated, funny woman who is not only willing to ride along while you help the poor, but will do it in a car with a hole in the bottom? How could he have possibly "done better"?
What's this guy like who made this comment?
rikyrah
He has ' issues' with Sistas of the ' darker hue'.
Justice58
Major Eye Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kat
Tell him there is a white girl in Tennessee who wants to FIGHT him.
Miranda
LMAO!!! There's a white girl in Tennessee that will beat him senseless...."but it supposed to be ME!"
Miranda
And you KNOW Michelle had a girlfriend or two that was telling her "you can do better than that!".....and making snide remarks about the "guy with the lil apartment and hole in the car"....you know they were all up in her ear!....but Michelle was "raised right", and now she's First Lady!!
Miranda
I love Malia's lil attitude!! LOL
spirit_55z
Hey y'all i was over on te other thread. hee, hee, so many of them. Malia: "That's embarrassing, mom"
Miranda
LOL.....of course my fav is still "Wait....is he gonna be on ALL the TVs??"...she didnt care if Daddy was gonna air an infomercial to the voters..all she wanted to know was if it was gonna interrupt That's So Raven!
