The Obama transition just announced part of the White House press office, confirming that Robert Gibbs will take the high-profile job of press secretary and making Dan Pfeiffer, the largely behind-the-scenes communications director and manager of the campaign press shop, deputy White House communications director.
Anita Dunn, another key figure in the campaign, isn't going to the White House, but the administration will be bringing in an outsider in the senior job of communications director: Emily's List executive director Ellen Moran.
Washington – President-elect Barack Obama today announced the following White House staff: Ellen Moran, Director of Communications; Robert Gibbs, Press Secretary; and Dan Pfeiffer, Deputy Director of Communications.
President-Elect Obama said, "These individuals will fill essential roles, and bring a breadth and depth of experience that can help our administration advance prosperity and security for the American people. This dedicated and impressive group of public servants includes longtime advisors and a talented new addition to our team, and together we will work to serve our country and meet the challenges of this defining moment in history."

rikyrah and greenladyhere: thank you too! I have been circulating this article to the young people in our Learn 2 Teach, Teach 2 Learn Program. Our youth can be the innovators and inventors of the future, not just the consumers of new sciences and technologies!
Here in Boston, we have been working with a multi-level role modeling program to get youth of color exposed to and engaged with emerging technologies and sciences. We hire teenagers, get them trained with project-based modules with help from the MIT Media Lab, have them design and build projects that solve a community issue important to them, then send them out to seventeen different community organizations to teach summer technology and science camps to elementary and middle school youth. Youngers always want to be doing what the teenagers find cool, so the teens are much more better at recruiting youth than adults. . . smile. The great staff and college mentors all look like our youth and that is really important too. Mel King is the founder and director.
In six years, we have gotten over 180 teenagers and over 2000 elementary and middle school youth involved in the program. We are creating a critical mass of 3-5000 youth exposed to and engaged with emerging technologies and sciences who can catalyze cultural change in the community about what is possible to achieve!
Schools are not yet able to reform education fast enough to really impact the STEM aspirations of youth of color, so these kind of programs are a big help. The out of school time model is very effective (and provides much-need meaningful summer and afterschool jobs for teenagers) and we are beginning to have other cities show interest in replicating it.
So if you know folks who are interested in organizing around this, tell them about what is going on in Boston!

And the contents of the mystery note? A clue. A clue, which addressed one of the very questions I had just been pondering, and it wasn’t the one about the turkey, which won’t be answered until Thanksgiving Day.
The question? Who will step up to be the dragon slayer in 2010? Who has the smarts, the experience, the integrity, and the chutzpah to go toe-to-toe with Sarah Palin, whether she runs for governor, or senator. And there was the answer, scrawled in unfamiliar penmanship - Democratic State Senator Hollis French.
Ahhh. This is good. He is very qualified, has an impressive resume, and is one of the White Knights of the Legislature. Before he gets the official Mudflats endorsement, however (not that this endorsement is particularly coveted), I’m going to wait and watch and see what happens when the Legislature meets again. They have much on their plates, and they need to know they are supported, but they have some tough decisions ahead and people will be watching.
I saw Hollis French on Thursday. He was on line at Costco. That’s why I love this state. Our representatives aren’t somewhere distant, holed up in a marble tower. They don’t seem alien and unapproachable. They are on line at Costco, buying fruit. LOTS of fruit. The man really loves fruit. So, when it becomes appropriate to send something to Hollis French when he becomes our next Governor, or Senator, I’ll make it a fruit basket, and make it under $250.
Interesting! THEY ARE WATCHING!!! :>) :>)

rikyrah: Another POSSIBLE, MAYBE, PERHAPS, NOT CONFIRMED:
ABC News reports that Obama has tapped Larry Summers to be his top economic adviser:
ABC News has learned that President-elect Obama has decided to name former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers the director of the National Economic Council, essentially the president's senior economic adviser.
Part of the Executive Office of the President, the NEC was created for the purpose of advising the President on matters related to U.S. and global economic policy. The NEC has four functions, by executive order: ensuring that programs and policy decisions are consistent with the President's economic goals, monitoring the implementation of the President's economic policy agenda, coordinating policy-making for domestic and international economic issues, and coordinating economic policy advice for the President.
Earlier AP reported that Tim Geithner, the current president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, has been chosen as Secretary of the Treasury.

rikyrah: Another APPOINTMENT - under CONSIDERATION - POSSIBLY - PERHAPS: :>)
WASHINGTON - Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, a rising star in Maryland politics, appears to be under serious consideration for secretary of veterans affairs in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet, according to a news account published yesterday.
Brown, an Iraq war veteran, was named this month as co-chairman of an Obama transition team overseeing veterans policy. He is now being vetted for the job of VA secretary, according to the National Journal, which quoted an anonymous source close to the Obama transition effort as saying that Brown was being seriously considered.
Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who suffered the loss of both legs and an arm in the Vietnam War, and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, an Iraq war veteran who lost both legs in combat, have also been mentioned as possible choices for the post.
The Obama-Biden transition office would not confirm the report. Michael Raia, Brown's spokesman, declined to comment, saying the lieutenant governor's "primary focus remains serving the people of Maryland."
If selected, he would become at least the second African-American in the Obama Cabinet. Former Justice Department official Eric Holder is in line to become the nation's first African-American attorney general.
Brown, who turned 47 yesterday, served a 10-month tour of duty in Iraq as a member of an Army civil affairs team out of New York in 2004 and 2005 and is a colonel in the Army Reserve. According to his official biography, he is the highest-ranking public official in the nation to have served a tour of duty in Iraq.
- One South Florida city is planning to honor the president-elect with his own street.
Opa-locka plans to rename Perviz Avenue to Barack Obama Avenue on President’s Day in February. The city commission voted on the name change last week and officials say it is expected to finalize the approval next month.
Opa-locka is a predominantly heavily African-American community north of downtown Miami.
P.S. My sister (DETROIT) reports that Ms. Reeves is on the City Council THERE! Sometimes she comes to meeting in her sequined dresses. Oooo-Kaaaaay! :>)
