Obamas Attend Funeral

President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended the funeral this morning of a relative of their close friend, Eric Whitaker.

The Obamas spent nearly two hours inside the legendary Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago's South Side, where the service was being held.

Whitaker is one of Obama's friends from Harvard. He is part of the president-elect's close Chicago inner circle, often traveled with him during the campaign and has been mentioned as a possible appointee in his administration.

Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church is a famous, active church in the South Side. It was founded by Rev. Clay Evans. Obama has been there in the past for community events.

The Obamas arrived at the brick church at about 9:45 a.m. Two white limousines and a hearse were parked outside. The president-elect shook hands with a family member at the door of the church when he arrived, a press aide told reporters.

There was a bit of confusion on the pool reporters bus after the Obamas arrived. Reporters were told that Obama's recently-named Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, had asked photographers not to release pictures or video of the Obamas arriving, out of respect for the family. But pool had already sent them out on the wire.

Reporters were not allowed inside the church. But a Springfield, Ill. newspaper, The State Journal Register, reported in 1996 that four large portraits of Evans, Rev. Jessie Jackson, late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington and Martin Luther King. Jr. "dominate the waiting area."

The Obamas left in the motorcade before all of the people inside left the church.

New Obama statement on the Mumbai attacks:

"Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the American citizens who lost their lives in the outrageous terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all who have been touched by this terrible tragedy.

"These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them. The United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology.

"There is one president at a time. I will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground in Mumbai, and am grateful for the cooperation of the Bush Administration in keeping me and my staff updated. We fully support the Bush Administration's efforts to protect American citizens and assist the government of India during this tragic time."
