I think you have to look at this in the terms of short term and long term goals. Cabinet positions are short term and window dressing. High level staff positions and mid to low level positions are long terms goals. In the short term you can make history in an appointment and make a few changes. In the long term, you can direct policy, i.e., change the lives of people and build a power base so that you can always be at the table for the policy positions. I'd rather have diversity at the high level staff positions because these people have the ear of the President. They are the ones in the room when decisions are being made. This also gives them the knowledge and leverage to be the next Cabinet people to continue making decisions. Also the mid to lower level positions are important because you have a new generation of leaders who can continue to build their resumes and open doors for others to follow.

Me, personally I don't care about the faces of the administration. I want minorities to be in a position to implement policy and build power. Power and policy are the way to true equality, not the faces of the administration. That looks good but didn't work out at all with Bush and only minimally with Clinton.

I concur with your concern. The Obama Administration should mirror America with the best and the brightest administrators money can't buy. If Barack Obama cannot do at least the same level as former president Clinton in regards to black, Latino, and native American appointments, I will have to look backwards and wonder why I voted for the brother? You see, one of the key reasons I voted for Barack because I thought he would include more blacks in key positions so that black businesses could gain more of the Federal contracting dollars. I knew that with the mortgage crisis, the federal government for many black owned contractors, may be one of the only games in town. When blacks are heads of Federal agencies we tend to make sure that Federal contracting requirements are implemented, as Mr. Jackson :-( did at HUD.

Let's be honest under both the Clinton and Bush administrations federal contracting dollars for black contractors increased due to the efforts of black administrators standing in the gap. I for one, will be watching to see who Barack Obama selects for key Secretary positions. His selection of the Attorney General is a good start , I'm sure there will be more. I hope all Jack and Jill readers will be watching too.

PS, Thanks Jill for the shout out.

Obama is appointing the people who he thinks are best qualified for the jobs he has to fill. I do not want him to appoint someone just because they are African American or just because they are Hispanic , White, Asian or Native American. I trust that there are numerous minorities out there who are extremely qualifed for his cabinet posts. I trust that Obama will name the best people without question or debate- and not base his selections primarily on the color of their skin. I trust that he will make wise and sound decisions. So far he seems to be doing a good job.

Also, just running back to say that while certain Cabinet positions are definitely high profile, and send a certain signal, I think the President-elect's choices for some key White House positions are equally as vital, and send another kind of signal. He has a number of Black folks who are going to be in the room with him far more often than his Cabinet secretaries will be. That's real influence.

And, these are positions that have never seen a Black person ever in those roles. I think that is very important to remember.

Our new President just appointed a brother today to be the Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Let's not sleep on this really vital appointment. And yesterday, Melody Barnes was on that stage as an integral player in his Economic Team. This is some serious stuff, family. Unprecedented.

Family, I just wanted to underscore what has been said by others, but having served in the Clinton Administration does not necessarily make one a Clintonista.

Those are distinctly different animals.

I was a Clinton appointee in the 1990's. I in no way identify myself as a Clintonista. I just don't want us to blur these definitions. There is an entire generation of Democratic or Independent policy types who cut their teeth in the Clinton Administration because that was our first opporutnity to serve in government. That doesn't necessarily mean our allegiance is with the Clintons. Let's please try to separate those issues.

These are great points. I'm all down for affirmative action too but people in such high positions should be chosen because of their credentials. As a comment you quoted in a recent article said, Obama really needs to open the door for people of color into lower staff positions so that they have the chance to work their way into the ranks of Washington. I tend to either extremely disagree or agree with you; never in between. haha

Thank you for addressing this topic, and noting that asking for diversity does not mean only looking at diversity. Rather, that it should be something on the radar, if not intentional.

Keep in mind that diversity does not have to be race alone. It is equally important to have people with different reflections of America as it relates to gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, and academic standing (would be nice to have a couple of folks with a PhD or two, but that's just my bias from growing up in the Ebony Tower, LOL!)

People are singing Obama's praises for who are getting the "inside" jobs that aren't media exposed, but you're right; apart from Holder at Justice, he hasn't named any other African-Americans to Cabinet positions.

There are fourteen cabinet positions - he has about eight more opportunities to name another sista or brotha to a Cabinet position, just like he has opportunities to name more Latinos and Asians to Cabinet positions, too. We want Obama to be bold, but it remains to be seen as to whether or not he has it in him.

I'm more concerned about too many Clintonistas in his Cabinet at this point.

All three of them beat Reagan and Bush Sr COMBINED.

Though regarding Bush Jr's appointments, all they served to be were Ethnic faces in High places while doing Bush's bidding and subverting the laws and the Constitution they swore to uphold.

Gonzales disgraced himself in allowing the politicization of the Justice Department and then lying about it on Capitol Hill when confronted with EVIDENCE.

Condoleezza failed to impress upon Bush that Bin Laden was tired of playing with America and was determined to attack - she delivered the memo but didn't tell Bush "Maybe you need to cut your vacation short to go back to DC and deal with this."

Colin lied to the UN to help Bush get his WAR ON.

Rod Paige gave us NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND - and every child who's parent can't afford to send them to Sidwell Friends or Georgetown Day, Holton Arms or St. Albans, and have to deal in the public education system are ALL BEING LEFT BEHIND.

Elaine Chao got in the Labor Department so she could bust up Labor Unions.

Christie Todd Whitman was in EPA and was forced to lie about the air quality after 9/11.
Gonzales disgraced himself in allowing the politicization of the Justice Department and then lying about it on Capitol Hill when confronted with EVIDENCE.

Condoleezza failed to impress upon Bush that Bin Laden was tired of playing with America and was determined to attack – she delivered the memo but didn't tell Bush “Maybe you need to cut your vacation short to go back to DC and deal with this.”

Colin lied to the UN to help Bush get his WAR ON.
