From Klein's website:

The new president’s only hope of resisting this campaign being waged by the elites is if the remarkable grassroots movement that carried him to victory can somehow stay energized, networked, mobilized—and most of all, critical. Now that the election has been won, this movement's new missions should be clear: loudly holding Obama to his campaign promises, and letting the Democrats know that there will be consequences for betrayal.

The first order of business—and one that cannot wait until inauguration—must be halting the robbery-in-progress known as the “economic bailout.” I have spent the past month examining the loopholes and conflicts of interest embedded in the U.S. Treasury Department’s plans. The results of that research can be found in a just published feature article in Rolling Stone, The Bailout Profiteers, as well as my most recent Nation column, Bush’s Final Pillage.

Both these pieces argue that the $700-billion “rescue plan” should be regarded as the Bush Administration’s final heist. Not only does it transfer billions of dollars of public wealth into the hands of politically connected corporations (a Bush specialty), but it passes on such an enormous debt burden to the next administration that it will make real investments in green infrastructure and universal health care close to impossible. If this final looting is not stopped (and yes, there is still time), we can forget about Obama making good on the more progressive aspects of his campaign platform, let alone the hope that he will offer the country some kind of grand Green New Deal.

Readers of The Shock Doctrine know that terrible thefts have a habit of taking place during periods of dramatic political transition. When societies are changing quickly, the media and the people are naturally focused on big “P” politics—who gets the top appointments, what was said in the most recent speech. Meanwhile, safe from public scrutiny, far reaching pro-corporate policies are locked into place, dramatically restricting future possibilities for real change.

CPL, this is classic shock doctrine. Nothing has changed. Wall Street, bloated and swollen as a result of too many years feasting on a veritable buffet of reckless and dangerous investments, has simply found another way to feed its habit.

Crawl to the Treasury ~ the Treasury fully staffed with your own people ~ and beg. Acting as if one is humble isn't so hard, not if it's rewarded with $700 billion or more.

Wall Street has robbed the retirement funds of millions and millions of Americans, the pensions of our retired elderly, and like any drove up junkie on the street, it can't simply quit.

It's got to keep on, and when the only money left resides in the government coffers ~ or that same government's ability to access loans from other governments ~ then that's where it will go.

We've been fucked. That's what I think about this.

The thing that absolutely confirms it for me is that little bitty change to the tax code when no one was looking. To me, that's just confirmation that the Bush Crime Family is still working, still plotting, still planning to loot every last fucking dime from this country before getting the fuck out of town on January 20.

I am pissed off. This just makes me furious. I despise these people and if someone, somewhere, in some company isn't eventually arrested and tried and imprisoned over this disaster, I will believe absolutely what I suspect: corporate power is the only power and government is merely a servant of money. The rest if window dressing.

More and more, I'm thinking we all “got took,” as my old uncle used to say, on this bailout bill.

Witness: The information you've provided re continuing bonuses and high living, evidence of a great big bankers' fuck you to the American people.

Witness: The little minor single sentence slipped into the tax code the same week everyone was hysterical about the collapse of wall street, the same little sentence that will benefit banks to the tune of $140 billion billion at the expense of all of us.

Witness: The initial intent of Paulson to have complete control of $700 billion with zero ~ zero ~ oversight or recourse through the courts should the thing go bad.

Witness: The current absolute arrogance and dismissive attitude evident in bailout czar Neel Kashkari, the unknown wall streeter who appears to have complete control of the funds provided by congress, funds that could easily have been devoted to helping millions and millions of people stay in their homes.

Witness: The refusal of Paulson, Kashkari et al to make transparent the funds so far disbursed.

Witness all of this and then pay heed to Naomi Klein, she of the brilliant Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.

Her most recent post . . . .http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2008/11/real-change-depends-stopping-bailout-profiteers

Real change depends on stopping the bailout profiteers

She's right.
