Oh, don't get me wrong Hustle, there will be institutional racism in the US for a loooong time to come… I have no doubts. But like the heading said, THIS election will not be decided based on the fact that Barack is black (or bi-racial or whatever)… I think it's going to be a referendum on Bush and the republicans… and also a strong desire for a new direction for the country. So to reiterate, I didn't say racism would disappear because of this election…. I just don't think Barack's race is going to be a determining factor that greatly shifts the outcome in favor of McCain. Not as much as I did at the beginning in January. And like you, I don't think we should whine about race, but I also don't think that where we are right now is where we'll always be. As far as it being a permanent feature I can't say, but I can say that it's better than it was even 30 years ago… and I hope, pray and even believe that it will be even better thirty years from now. So while we have a way's to go racially as a nation, in all fairness I have to say that we've also made great strides thanks to the hard work of a lot of people. ONLY in America is Barack's story even possible.

wholly disagree MCB2. What event, arrest, judgment, legislative change marked the defeat of embedded, insitutional racism? Even if all racists were to disappear today, there is a pretty solid machinery in place that lets race operate by a largely invisible hand, making perpetrators – individuals, companies, institutions – easily able to skirt accountability. We shouldn't whine about race. We should just treat it as the permanent feature that it is.

The updates are fantastic. My laptop acts like it is supposed to; oddly I never had a problem w/ my desktop computer downloading this site. the one thing I would suggest is that you still keep the number of comments as the actual number on the top of the page or list how many pages exist.

Just speaking for myself, you guys have so many comments because this blog is GREAT!!! You just do not know how therapeutic this blog has been to me. With all the ups and downs and things that have been thrown at Barack over this campaign year, this blog has kept me somewhat sane when I wanted to scream at a TV pundit, a stupid newspaper op-ed or anything else. The posts, the comments, and the links has done me good. I think this speaks directly to the number of comments, links and post here.

Why Race Won't Matter in this Election

This will be a short entry. The reason why race won't matter in this election is because Barack has transcended the race issue. Think of black people who white people love. Oprah, Michael Jakson (pre-crazy), Tiger Woods, etc… White people don't look at them as normal black people, they look at them as famous people who happen to be black. There are going to be fringe elements who are going to hate him because he's black regardless, but for the most part, Barack isn't offensive to most white people who aren't racist. So, let's stop our hand-wringing and enjoy our upcoming landslide victory.
