rikyrah: From "Mudflats": The theme: "Whycome" The Gov. didn't take care of "rural Alaska"?
We talk an awful lot about Wasilla these days. Americans now know more about the inner-workings of the city council, the library, the police department, and local churches than they ever imagined they would. We also talk a lot about the North Slope of Alaska with its oil fields, and the larger city centers of Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks. But look at a map of Alaska superimposed on a map of the Lower 48. Most of Alaska, which some call the “real Alaska,” is much larger, and much less known that the parts that make the headlines.
For every person who has lived in “the bush,” there is a different story. But universal is the opinion that bush Alaska has some very real problems, that have not been adequately addressed. The remote location of many bush communities makes many aspects of construction and infrastructure difficult. Communities often do without what the rest of us would consider basic neccessities. Health care and education face unbelievable challenges. The rates of domestic violence, rape, and alcohol abuse are alarming. Alaska State Troopers are too few, underpaid, and often underequipped. Sadly, our previous Commissioner of Public Saftey, Walt Monegan, was on track with a plan to address some of these issues. You’ll recall that he was fired by Sarah Palin, and his termination has become the focus of the “Troopergate” investigation.
SKIP
With growing evidence of an Alaska Native exodus from villages to the city, Mayor Mark Begich and Schools Superintendent Carol Comeau sent a letter to Gov. Sarah Palin on Monday asking her to organize an emergency task force to find ways to stem the migration.
SKIP
Many of the problems that face rural Alaska are not solvable in a day, a month, even years. But, when you have a Governor bragging about her reforming ways, it does make you wonder. Why was she so unable to even start real reform in her own state over a two year period?
So as you watch Sarah Palin talking about energy issues, ask yourself one question: If Sarah Palin is so knowledgeable about energy and has had executive experience, why is the Anchorage Daily News running a story like the one above?
Sarah Palin has been in office for almost two years and managed to sell a plane, is under investigation for an abuse of power, and gave people that do not need it (including people no longer in Alaska) $1,200 rather than funding real energy relief for rural Alaskans. The Washington Post has stated in a recent article that in 2002 through lobbyist ties related to Ted Stevens and Don Young she secured $900,000 in upgrades for Wasilla’s infrastructure. There are still many rural villages today without roads, electricity, indoor plumbing, and some even have their sewage leaking into the water supply. Money is needed, but more importantly, someone that is willing to spend the time to start a conversation.
SOOOO, "The Gov" cain't "sweep around her own back yard", BUT she wants to MAKE US BELIEVE that she can assist in running a country!?
I THINK NOT!
I'm just sayin' many people are trying to make sure that she CAIN'T COME BACK to Alaska - AFTER HER LOSS!! :>)

Some issues you have to let ride. Again, the lines have already been drawn. WHO, even the most "neutral" independent, would think it was a wise idea to go to KENYA of all places for this type of activity? He is lucky he remains in one piece. If they try to ride this one out they will only be preaching to the base as they have been doing with Palin, as they have been doing with the calls for murder, etc. I am not worried about this Corsi mess nor do I think Obama should have to answer for it. It's common sense. These are the same folks who do not feel we should meet with WORLD LEADERS without our own set of preconditions. The arrogance is staggering. Guaranteed if the situation were in reverse, the perp would be labeled a "terrorist" and "rightfully" denied entry to the US. They think their version of America has big and bad on lock but are sadly mistaken.
It is interesting to compare the governmental response to Obama in countries around the world with that of our own. This article in particular was facinating: Kenya Detains U.S. Author Critical of Obama I delves more specifically on the reaction in Kenya to the Obama candidacy, and the Kenyan ethnic tensions surrounding our election.

It could be argued that they did Corsi a favour. I read a Kenyan responded that he would have been in danger if Kenyans had got a hold of him first.
I feel good.Today the elderly couple who does my lawn to supplement their income got into a conversation about the state of the country. To my surprise they had nothing good to say about McCain and in their words that trollop he picked to be VP.Now they are white who grew up in segregated Oklahoma,so I asked them were they registered and they said no.I said even though our state might not turn blue your votes count and then I registered both of them on the spot and since they dont have transportation I will take them to the polls on Nov. 4th.Two more votes for change.

I dont know how true this is but we have a right to know Report: McCain's cancer has metastasised to his lymph nodes Counterpunch has an source who reports that McCain's melanoma has recurred and has spread to his lymph nodes. Counterpunch's anonymous informant does not have first hand knowledge, but relays information given to her by a NIH official. The NIH official reportedly learned of McCain's condition through a doctor in California.
The article is available by subscription only, but here is the tease:
Is McCain Much Sicker Than We Know?
A source tells CounterPunch that McCain received grim news during a recent, secret visit to a top cancer hospital in Los Angeles.
The story continues with interviews from cancer specialists, not treating McCain, who speculate that the recent noted swelling on the left side of his face could be caused by radiation therapy.
Since McCain refuses to allow public review of his medical records, third hand information is as reliable as a guess on the state of his health. Something is wrong, the public has a right to know whether Palin is really the top of their ticket.
lgcap's diary :: :: The most recent reports about McCains cancer are from July.
McCain's mole removed Posted: Posted: Monday, July 28, 2008 2:41 PM by Mark Murray Filed Under: 2008, McCain From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Mark Murray
Obama hasn't been the only one who's been to the doctor lately... McCain had a regular three-month check-up this morning in Phoenix, and the doctor decided to remove a mole-like growth from the right side of his face near the temple, according to a spokesperson for the campaign. The removal was precautionary and the doctor was not concerned about a recurrence of the skin cancer that has left a scar along his left cheek, the spokesperson said.
The campaign's spokesperson was vague about whether McCain was awaiting further tests -- but repeatedly reassured the press corps that there was nothing to worry about and the procedure was purely a precaution.

(Photo: Max Whittaker/Getty Images)The McCain campaign issued a statement this evening from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where Senator John McCain had a small spot on his face removed and biopsied on Monday.
According to his campaign, Michael Yardley, chairman of the public affairs department at the clinic, issued this statement:
"Senator McCain visited the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, yesterday for a routine check of his dermatological health. The biopsy that was performed did not show any evidence of skin cancer. No further treatment is necessary. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/7/122...
Actually, it's not hilarious at all. It will get a lot of media attention and then the subject of Barack's "connections" to Kenyan "radicals" will become the next smear. And the proof? The Kenyans deported the man who was there to search for more information on these connections and to announce his smoking-gun findings to the public.
This is the game they're playing. They're going all in.
I feel sick.
Michelle
I feel sick.
Hang on Craig, just hang on to what you know of what is happening outside this noise. And please take care of yourself.
I told my gf it was going to get ugly but just like always I am never fully internally prepared for how ugly.
This thing is fighting back against what is happening. This collective is choosing and it is a bloody internal choice because of how sick this thing is to start with.
I can't say "don't let it get to you" here with any credibility, because I am letting it get to me.
But .... for some reason I am angrier that it is making you sick than that it is making me sick and apparently now my inner Jewish mother is involved (who knew?)
MsKitty
Like I said downthread, we all knew it was going to get seriously ugly these last weeks because Gramps has nothing else to offer and he knows it. We have to keep our eyes on the prize, and don't lose sleep over every bit of poo that McPalin decides to fling. We have to keep on keeping on with the donations, the calls, the door knocking. I know how hard you have been working for the campaign so don't allow yourself to get sidetracked and discouraged, stay focused.
I agree with Truthseeker and any criticism of Obama on this front will fall flat like the rest of their attacks.
Corsi clearly had no respect for Kenya as a nation and it probably never even crossed his mind to get his papers in order. Would he go to Germany or Australia and not have his paperwork in order? Of course not!
He will come home, lie about his immigration papers, and give a press conference here.
They're going all in.
TruthSeeker
Ha... The Kenyans will just respond that in addition to not having the work permit, his safety was an issue. They'll say they saved his life.
The little bastard was going there to get dirt on Obama to help McCain. The quick-thinking Kenyans kneecapped him. Who the hell does he think he is, anyway? I hope they have pictures to prove he wasn't hurt in any way.
That is hilarious! Why would this fool go to a foreign country without the necessary paperwork? And now he has to submit to black authorities on their turf. Bwaahaha!!
If you'll notice, his book isn't exactly selling like hotcakes.
Press Now Barred From Talking To Palin Supporters October 7th, 2008 By JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief
Yet another bar has been lowered in the 2008 Presidential political campaign — or, in this case, the Vice Presidential campaign which in this case is controlled by a Presidential campaign:
Constantly under the watchful eyes of security, the media wasn’t permitted to wander around inside Coachman Park to talk to Sarah Palin supporters. When reporters tried to leave the designated press area and head toward the bleachers where the crowd was seated, an escort would dart out of nowhere and confront him or her and say, “Can I help you?” and turn the person around.
When one reporter asked an escort, who would not give her name, why the press wasn’t allowed to mingle, she said that in the past, negative things had been written. The campaign wanted to avoid that possibility Monday.
This item from the St. Petersburg Times should be troubling to all Americans. Since when is the press barred from talking to a candidate’s SUPPORTERS? So now Palin is kept under tight wraps by the McCain campaign, giving interviews to a few select mainstream media reporters plus softball p.r. type interviews for Fox News’ mega-partisan talker Sean Hannity…while the press is barred from talking to her supporters.
This is how new standard operating procedure is created. In 2004 the press had lots of stories about how people were screened to enter and in some cases kicked out of George Bush’s political events. Now it’s come down to the press being barred from talking to a candidate’s supporters. And the irony is that speeches at these events will talk about defending freedom….
The Atlantic’s Andrew Sullivan writes:“This is not America. And it’s a chilling preview of how Putin-like a Palin-McCain administration would be.”
Prosecutors move to delay Rezko sentencing. "Federal prosecutors moved Monday to delay indefinitely the sentencing of convicted fundraiser Antoin "Tony" Rezko, sending their strongest hint yet that he is ready to spill his political secrets."

Obama awarded Illinois grants to relative's group. "As a state senator, Democrat Barack Obama awarded $75,000 in government grants to a Chicago social service organization led by a rabbi who is also his wife's cousin, records show."
Nate_Wesley
I'm not even sure why you wasted time posting this. Obama arranged grant money for a program that PREDATES his wife's cousin work there. And from an even lower standard, if there were no rules regulating the use of this money, then there were no rules to break--meaning no true impropriety--and no wrongdoing.
A lame maim on all accounts.
Suprk
Several tax experts said they believe Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is required to pay federal taxes on $25,000 in reimbursements from the state of Alaska for her children's travel expenses.
What does that have to do with Michelle's and Barack's corruption?

This is random, but Mika B. has truly embraced her role as the Alan Colmes of MSNBC's Morning Joe. I know I'm not the first to make that comparison, but it's blatant at this point.
She really gets on my nerves. At least I know what to expect from Joe. But, for some reason, Mika acts like she's afraid to say "boo" whenever Joe raises his voice.
She seems consumed by some sort of liberal guilt that compells her to agree with Joe whenever possible. It's as if she thinks her journalistic credibility depends on how often she agrees with the devil's advocate in her head. She mistakes "neutrality" for truth in reporting. In fact, to the extent that she tries to be "neutral" she's really just trying to balance out her opinions . . . . so for every positive thing she says about Obama, she forces herself to repeat 2 or 3 Republican talking points as a weak attempt to avoid the hate mail that is sure to come her way.
She'd rather be "fair" than truthful . . . kind of like how others in the media can't talk about McCain's dirt without feeling compelled to find something (anything) to say "Obama's hands aren't clean either." Obama's Keating 5 ad was a direct response to McCain's decision to resurrect the Wright and Ayers smears. But rather than treat the Keating ad as the political self-defense it is, some in the media prefer to have their audiences think that both ads are equally deplorable.
McCain and Palin are basically calling Obama a terrorist. That's reckless on so many levels (as a matter of safety) it's not even funny. . . and the McCain camp has to know how dangerous this line of attack can be.
The media did a similar thing to Kerry four years ago. When they couldn't ignore the swift-boaters anymore, they'd search for anything they could find on Kerry's side to try and convince their viewers that both sides were equally at fault . . . . implying that there's no need to blame one side more than the other. . . .meaning let's let the swift-boaters off the hook because of some weak contention that no one's hands are clean. It's garbage.
Sometimes one side is right and the other side is wrong. But the media can't seem to grasp the fact that "fairness" does not equal truth. Whatever happened to the idea that, while you're entitled to your own opinion, you're NOT entitled to you're own set of facts???
Sorry for the rant. But I really dislike biased shows that try to pass themselves off as neutral or "fair and balanced". . . especially when those shows come on in the morning like Morning Joe.
Considering the measures NBC took with Keith and Chris, MSNBC should replace Morning Joe with a standard, boring, "just the facts" morning broadcast and move Joe's show to 5pm with the rest of its pundit lineup. Because it's NOT a neutral program . . . it's just 3 hours where Joe gets to spew Republican talking points and his guests agree with 85-90% of everthing he says.
JJai
And Giuliani was on there this morning ranting about Ayers, Wright, and any hateful thing he could think of this morning while Mika and Joe were silent. They really gave him a good platform. Later on they had Gibbs but hey he is no balance to Giuliani.
Mika seems anxious and off her meds most mornings....
so true brotha. it's hard to get truth amplified nowadays. everybody is such a coward.
rikyrah
She's ridiculous. Pathetic and stupid. There must be someone qualified that could fill that spot. I would have said Rachel, but ....BWA HA HA HA HA
Joe couldn't handle Rachel.
msmartin
Joe can't handleRachel, he probably wants to do the same thing to her that he did to that woman they found in his office.

i am such a wimp. i always get nervous when the facists get in their tanks. the ayers stuff is making me nervous. and angry. mcain is obssessed with ayers because this is his life's big battle...vietnam. and he knows that this country is perpetually in denial about that genocidal, wastefull. and divisive decade long conflict. it was the treacherous hippies who lost that war not the lunatics who perpetrated it. so wall street is crashing and mccain wants to force the country to sign on for yet more convoluted denial about vietnam. fuck you john mccain! fight your fucking war in your fucking grave! war hero my ass!
andyfrombrooklyn
and sarah palin who is my age represents how the false understanding of vietnam can get passed on to the next generation. rambo movies and pow/mia flags over government buildings and infrastructure. aaarrrggghhh!!!!!
This is a distraction and part of their kitchen sink strategy. Throw anything and everything at Obama and let's see what sticks... They are running out of time and they know it. This is the way they change the subject. So every time they say Ayers, we say ECONOMY. They say Wright, we say ECONOMY. They say elitist, we say ECONOMY and on and on until November 4th when we change out verbage to stuff like "YAY" "or "Free at last!"
I liken it to someone you know is lying in your face, and has always done that. Do you freak out like every time? No you say, you lying... get to stepping.

Agreed. Distraction.
We have real reasons to vote FOR change. That's where this country is headed. Let the dead-enders drive into the ditch. We'll be magnanimous when they ask for a hand to get back out.
MsKitty
Exactly. I don't know anyone, even acquaintances who are comfortably in the six-digit income range, who isn't shitting bricks about what's going on with the economy. People don't have time to deal with that guilt-by-association nonsense, and if they're paying that much attention to it they likely weren't going to vote for Obama anyway. Americans want to know who has the best way of dealing with this mess in a calm, rational way. The candidate who can best deliver on that is going to win this election. Period.
Nate Silver over at www.fivethirtyeight.com says 179,000 people have already voted here in Georgia - says tally indicates 40% of voters are black so far - looks like O-Man is very likely to be currently leading in GA.
Will be voting later this week myself - need to mobilize your people in the urban areas that have chronic problems with long lines on Election Day NOW.
The reports from the field are what's really encouraging.

Palin's trying to hang on to one (?) electoral vote in Nebraska! And I'm loving the fact that Obama might actually flip North Carolina (or even GA)?!?!

Police officers shall not compromise their integrity, nor that of their Department or profession, by accepting, giving or soliciting any gratuity which could be reasonably interpreted as capable of influencing their official acts or judgments, or by using their status as a police officer for personal, commercial, or political gain
6.5 Police officers shall:
(a) not authorize the use of their names, photographs or titles in a manner that identifies the officer as an employee of this Department in connection with advertisements for any product, commodity or commercial enterprise;
(b) maintain a neutral position with regard to the merits of any labor dispute, political protest, or other public demonstration while acting in an official capacity; not make endorsements of political candidates, while on duty, or while wearing the Department's official uniform.

My new responsibilities as senior analyst for the Tom Joyner Morning Show, coupled with my increased television presence in prime time, made it too difficult to continue a three-hour morning show.
I'm also making some changes on the blogging front. Today is the last day I'll be blogging for Essence.com. I am expanding our blogging presence on RolandSMartin.com and doing some other exciting web ventures that I can't quite discuss yet.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's husband has agreed to answer written questions in the state Legislature's investigation into the firing of her public safety commissioner, campaign officials said Monday.
Todd Palin has been resisting a subpoena by lawmakers since mid-September. But with the Legislature's report on the matter due Friday, Palin has agreed to answer written questions submitted through his lawyer, McCain-Palin campaign spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said.
Stapleton called the move a good-faith offer, despite allegations that the investigation has been tarnished by partisan politics since the governor became Republican Sen. John McCain's vice presidential candidate.
"We certainly hope this would not be the case, but there is a good chance that Friday's report may not get to the facts in a way that is at arm's length from politics as the legislators originally intended," Stapleton said. "However, Todd Palin believes it is still important to make an offer of cooperation and good faith."

When normal people fail to show up in court don't they get thrown in jail? I don't see why everyone is handling Palin and all the evil and dirt that embodies her with kiddy gloves. She wants to talk the talk and walk the walk treat her as such. This is getting out of hand!
With a month to go in the presidential campaign, the Republicans have launched their lamest attack yet -- Barack Obama is actually a dangerous closeted radical, they say.
Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin launched the attack this weekend. "Our opponent ... is someone who sees America it seems as being so imperfect that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," she said on Saturday, apparently referring to Obama's distant and tangential connection to William Ayers, a co-founder of the 1960s-era Weather Underground.

And that's to say nothing of Sarah Palin. She's probably the last person who can point fingers about law-abiding citizenry. Palin, remember, is under investigation for allegedly pressuring and intimidating law enforcement in her home state of Alaska. To this day, the self-professed reformer refuses to cooperate with state-authorized subpoenas that she and her husband have both ignored. And yes, that's the same husband who was involved in a radical secessionist political party that wanted Alaska to leave the United States. Do you really want to go there Sarah?

(Newser) – Hillary Clinton has raised more than $8 million since July for Barack Obama, USA Today reports, and has hit 40 Obama campaign events in the past 2 months. She’ll headline two more Obama fundraisers this month, plus 11 events for other Democratic candidates. But while she’s raising money for others, her own campaign still owes $9 million to various vendors.
Obama has implored top fundraisers to help Clinton with that debt, and Clinton has promised to settle up, but “with a month to go until Election Day,” she says, “our energies have to be focused on persuading people to support Democrats.” Clinton has reason to hope Democrats win, strategists say—if they do, Clinton’s efforts will make her “the most important woman in American politics.”

McCain's biography is a smear so the only way to move away from the smear tactics is to not talk about him. That ain't happening.
(Newser) – Three aircraft crashes involving Navy flyer John McCain early in his career led Navy administrators to question his skills and judgment, reports the Los Angeles Times. In the most troubling incident, McCain was "clowning" around in a Skyraider over Spain in 1961 and flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to the candidate's own account. McCain also crashed a jet in Texas and one in Virginia during training.
McCain claimed the "engine quit" in the Texas crash in his autobiography, but a Navy investigation found no evidence of engine failure. Probers blamed the crash on faulty flying by the 23-year-old pilot. After McCain was sent to Vietnam he lost two planes, but was not faulted in either of those cases. He has often cited his service history, including his time as a POW, to score campaign points.
"Alaska Hockey Moms for Obama" was created to keep the American people informed about what’s going on up here in Alaska regarding the campaign and related articles. Many Americans are misinformed by John McCain, Sarah Palin, and the Republican campaign, in general. Check the National Election Polls here.

My poor Governor - better get ready for the jumpsuit.
A new man has pinched his nose and jumped into the shark-infested waters of Alaska political blogging. I’d like to welcome Cliff Groh to the pool. Groh is in Washington D.C. now, blogging about the Ted Stevens trial. His history with Stevens is long, and his knowledge of Alaskan politics is extensive. He is working on a book about the current political corruption scandal uncovered by federal investigation. He understands the dynamics of corruption. He’s a straight shooter.
The name of his blog? Alaska Political Corruption. It’s not catchy or clever, but it gets the point across, and Groh is good at getting the point across. I’m adding it to my blogroll, and will be checking it throughout the trial. Here’s his assessment of the two legal teams.
Not counting the defendant himself, there were 12 people sitting at the defense table or at the bench behind at a hearing last week.
The prosecution also had approximately a dozen people at that hearing.
This massive investment on behalf of Ted Stevens is a far cry from what we saw in the three trials of Alaska state legislators occurring in Anchorage last year. In each of those public corruption cases tried in Alaska, the defendant was outgunned so badly it was embarrassing. It was like a freight train was roaring down the tracks on one man.
This case sets up very differently. With all of the resources expended on Stevens’ defense, this trial is more like two freight trains colliding—and it’s not clear which train will ultimately get the worse of it.
All this fine legal work for Ted Stevens doesn’t come cheap. It’s entirely possible that this defense is costing $175,000 per week during the trial, and that estimate could be substantially low.
$175,000 a week? You could buy a lot of sled dogs, fish sculptures, massage chairs, barbeque grills, generators and home renovations for that chunk of change!
SORRY! I just took the whole post, since it was short.
ALASKA is going to be telling a "BRAND NEW TALE" about the political life in that state! :>)
Welcome to the REAL WORLD, they seem to be saying!! :>) :>)

Keith Olbermann. I think we should call his truthful as hell rant "the ripping of a new asshole"....my goodness did he not tear Sarah Palin a new one or what?
I watch Keith Olbermann because I agree with his perspective. I wouldn't watch Fox News. So if a lot of people are like me, I wonder if his message gets out to those who need to hear it! And if it did, would they just react like I do to Fox News?

This video ought to be sent around the country, especially to those who are on the fence. They need to see her for what she really is; an ignorant, low class, narrow minded, anti-america phony and liar. He tore her a new one alright. borke it off in there and left it.
McCain claims he doesn't know Obama. Why not? Did you work with him for 4 years in the US Senate? You mean to tell us that "you don't know" who Obama is or what he's all about after 4 years? Just like Hillary "didn't know" if Obama was Christian or not even though he had joined her for prayer breakfasts.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.
Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.
Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

Check out this video of McCain commenting on Rick Renzi being "innocent until proven guilty." McCain's hypocrisy is so obvious yet the msm lets him get away with this crap. I guess McCain gets a pass when it comes to his "associations." And there are so many to choose from and here is just three of many.
McCain witholds ‘judgment’ on Renzi indictment. By Matt Corley on Feb 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ), who is a member of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) National Leadership Team and a co-chair of his Arizona Leadership Team, was indicted this morning for extortion, wire fraud, money laundering and more. Asked to comment, McCain refused to pass “judgment” on Renzi, claiming that he doesn’t “know enough of the details.” As TPM’s Paul Kiel notes, McCain claimed similar ignorance when it was first revealed that Renzi was under federal investigation.
UPDATE: On a blogger conference call today, McCain said that Renzi “would probably step down as co-chair of his Arizona campaign.”
Here's how the New York Times summarized the legislation John McCain voted against (not just once, but twice):
The Senate voted overwhelmingly today for a Federal law to prohibit bombings, arson and blockades at abortion clinics, and shootings and threats of violence against doctors and nurses who perform abortions.
The vote was 69 to 30. Twenty-eight senators who voted against Federal financing of abortions six weeks ago supported the measure, seeing it as a law-and-order matter rather than as an abortion issue.
As you can see, McCain was one of a distinct minority of radical "pro-life" senators. A number of senators who opposed abortion nonetheless voted for the legislation because they thought it would protect women and their doctors. It was only the extremists who opposed the bill -- and McCain was one of them.
One important detail about this legislation is that it was a standalone bill. In other words, McCain was opposed to this particular policy; he can't say that he opposed the bill for some unrelated reason.
And this new book on McCain will hopefully whet the curiousity of one or two journalists....hopefully before November 4. Is it possible McCain could have done something illegal while successfully taking down Abramoff? The writer of this book has been nominated for a Pulitzer in the past and now he believes Abramoff should be pardoned!!

A new book released the day after Sen. John McCain accepted the Republican presidential nomination attacks one of his trademark political successes: his investigation of now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff in 2004 and 2005.
“The Perfect Villain: John McCain and the Demonization of Lobbyist Jack Abramoff,” by former Boston Globe freelancer Gary S. Chafetz and put out by small independent publisher Martin and Lawrence press, aggressively puts forth the case that McCain’s investigation into Abramoff wasn’t the high-minded reform crusade he has made it out to be on the campaign trail, but rather was pure political payback.
Abramoff had been one of the financiers of evangelical leader Ralph Reed’s brass-knuckled efforts to defeat McCain in the 2000 South Carolina Republican primary. Shorly after McCain lost that campaign to Bush, he quit the race.
Chafetz argues that McCain nursed the wounds of that defeat for years, and in 2004 jumped on the chance to investigate Abramoff after the Washington Post published a damning expose of the millions of dollars in lobbying fees Abramoff had collected from his casino-rich Indian tribal clients. Peppered with new quotes from Abramoff—who met with Chafetz while in federal prison in Cumberland, MD—the book alleges that McCain withheld the vast majority of emails he confiscated during the inquiry, many of which could be exculpatory to the former lobbyist or damaging to McCain allies.
But Chafetz goes further than almost all of the few remaining Abramoff defenders, arguing that McCain deliberately twisted the results of his investigation to paint Abramoff in the worse possible light—and that McCain’s own actions to benefit his political contributors are similar to the very misdeeds he accused Abramoff of committing.
The McCain campaign did not respond to a request for comment by press time. On September 4th, just as McCain was getting ready for his GOP acceptance speech, Abramoff appeared in court to receive a four-year jail sentence stemming from his guilty plea in the public-corruption case. He has already been in federal prison for nearly two years on unrelated fraud charges in a Florida case.
As for Abramoff himself, Chafetz says he appears to have “battered woman’s syndrome” and now believes the accusations against him.
One section of the book relies heavily on documents he found on a Web site that purports to have transcripts of interviews
