NEW ORLEANS - An exclusive new WWL-TV statewide poll shows the contest for president may be closer than many had predicted among Louisiana voters.

In the telephone survey of 500 registered voters, conducted by pollster Ed Renwick, Republican Senator John McCain earns 43 percent of the vote, while Democrat Senator Barack Obama receives 40 percent. Renwick said that amounts to a statistical tie, since the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 points.

Kay Hagan tells Liddy Dole to KISS HER AZZ! She is fighting back!

The North Carolina Senate race just got hotter. Democrat Kay Hagan has filed a defamation lawsuit against inumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole for calling her an atheist.

Dole questioned Hagan's faith in an ad and refused Hagan's request to take it off the air. The Hill reports that Hagan, a former Sunday school teacher, is now running a response ad that calls Dole's ad "offensive" and suggests Dole broke one of the Ten Commandments.

Meanwhile, in Texas, Politico reports on another late-breaking lawsuit in which a businessman is suing a wealthy supporter of Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, claiming he was forced to funnel $75,000 to Coleman through Coleman's wife, Laurie.

Coleman spokesman Cullen Sheehan called the allegation "entirely baseless" and "totally false." Coleman, a Republican, is in a tight race against Democrat Al Franken.

I dont see anything wrong with him voting. He still has rights and I don't see why he would need his kids authorization to excercise his rights. This isn't surgery.

How is it not fair to him? What isn't fair is the belief that the elderly shouldn't have any rights at all just because it doesn't fit your view or what you "think" is fair or not fair.

The man paid his due all his life, he got old and now has dementia but why not allow him to vote? We aren't talking about signing off on surgery, giving away his life savings etc. We are talking about his right to vote. To take that way what would he have left? What purpose would his being here serve? He is told when to eat, when to sleep, when to poop, where to go, when to get up, and now they are throwing a hissy fit because he wants to vote? Why is he here? Might as well put the man to sleep. Clearly he has no rights left and serves no purpose on this earth.

I just don't see how allowing someone to vote who-by what's reported in this story-is not aware of what's going on is beneficial. If that's the case, let's get the people in nursing homes AND mental institutions-cause people with dementia are there too!-out to vote.

Every elderly person who's been trotted out on TV to vote has been clearly enthusiastic and known what's going on. And no one's complained at all. So this really isn't about the elderly or trying to take away any of their rights.

I have to worry about absentee ballots from overseas servicemembers not getting counted. Little nuance in VA law that needs to be changed.

If i'm not mistaken D., I heard it was Republican officials who were trying to challenge the ballot being counted.

I have a suspicion mine wasn't counted from 2004 because my former locality, which was a local county in HR did not record a single ballot from overseas. I looke it up on the voter statistic site.

This time around, the issue was getting them counted.

The law in VA says the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot has to have a witness signature and address when used as an application AND a ballot. Some registrars took that to mean all the ballots had to have signature/address, which is different from the laws for other absentee ballots. And Federal law says they have to all be processed the same way.

I worked the issue on behalf of VFF....took about a week to resolve, but now we have to get the laws changed. Probably the ONE thing we managed to do this year that was truly non-partisan.

Don't mind me and my tone - Seniors (especially the ones with alzeihmers and dementia, in nursing homes, assisted living facilities etc.) hold my heart and my utmost respect. So I get riled up real quick on their behalf. . . . :-) nothing personal.

She's great. Has morning sickness, but she had it the first time around (think it's because of the toothpaste).

I've been the one who's been moody and eating everything in sight.

:-) Tell her the trick is to keep crackers by her bedside. nibble on the crackers when she wakes up. Eat small meals through out the day instead of large meals and listen to her body for cues on what she wants to eat and what she should not touch. The baby(ies) will tell her everytime.

It worked for me in both pregnancies (triplets and the singleton). I wasn't sick not once. At a glance they would tell me what not to touch.

The crackers have been helping her. This time, she doesn't want any desserts (which sucks for me); she just wants bread and things with a lot p salt (and steak, which she NEVER eats).

if she is tempted to overeat and she knows she isn't hungry - get her a slurpee or some crushed ice will do.

That will curb her temptations and she won't have to worry about eating a lot of junk she doesn't need.

Also Daddy - I can't help you lol my pounds were all stomach, but hubby gained at least 20 lbs and had a time getting rid of it after. LOL

Oh yea, a huge key in managing morning sickness and other pregnancy issue is to ensure she is not stressed out at all. NO STRESS. If you can help her accomplish that . . . . she will have the best pregnancy ever.

I'm still trying to get rid of the weight from the last kid...lol.

Don't know if I mentioned it before, but I work in DC and we live in Norfolk. So most of the time, she's got our son by herself, and she's in school. I don't usually get home until about 830, and I'm out the door at 4 am. So she's beyond stressed...and that's before we throw in my stuff for VFF.

Tell your boss the benefits of working remotely.

Maybe he will let you work from home. Your commute must be a b*tch.

D - how is his vote different from someone who refuses to vote for Barack just because he is a black man? What percentage block do you think those voters cover? Do you think they exceed voters like that senior? Do you think we should investigate that group (voters who refuse to vote for a black man) and retract their votes?

Why should their vote have value but we should investigate, litigate and throw out the vote of our seniors?

My thing with seniors is that we need to leave them with their dignity even the ones suffering with dementia. If we insist on take away all their rights, doesn't matter if we agree with it or not, (I am not talking about decisions that would make them unsafe, I am talking about basic human rights) what is left? They are just empty vessels serving no purpose.

Because at least that person is making a conscious decision, even if it is based in BS.

This isn't about all seniors, and you know that. There's plenty who could debate the merits of Obama and McCain better than you and I. This is about someone who-from this story-appears to be somewhat mentally incapacitated.

I know that - we are referencing the ones with mental challenges. I still believe they (folks with dementia or other mental issues) have rights (even though it is practically nonexistent) in this country and it should not be taken away from them.

That is okay though. When you get old and have issues, know that I will be right here blogging on your behalf. :-)

She said McCain staffers wouldn’t tell her why she was being asked to leave and when she got outside, she saw “a group of about 20 people” who had all been asked to leave.

“I saw a couple that had been escorted out and they were confused as well, and the girl was crying, so I said ‘Why are you crying? and she said ‘I already voted for McCain, I’m a Republican, and they said we had to leave because we didn’t look right,’” Elborno said. “They were handpicking these people and they had nothing to go off of, besides the way the people looked.”

PALIN POPULARITY FALLS IN ALASKA AND NATION

Gov. Sarah Palin electrified the conservative base of the Republican party when she was first picked as Sen. John McCain's vice-presidential running mate, but polls say she has become a polarizing figure since then in her home state.

Palin's supporters regularly refer to her as the "most popular governor in America." But while her approval rating remains sky-high among local Republicans, she's lost the support of Democrats and independents who once formed a significant portion of her base.

Palin’s popularity with Alaska voters has dropped precipitously, from a high of roughly 90 percent this spring — long before she was selected to join the McCain ticket — to an approval rating now of around 60 percent.

Not bad for a governor, but nowhere near the support she enjoyed before making her debut on the national stage.

A statewide poll conducted Oct. 23 by Ann Hayes found about 63 percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of Palin, with 47 percent having a very favorable opinion.

Palin’s negatives are about 35 percent, according to the telephone survey of 400 likely voters with a margin of error of roughly 5 percentage points.

Ahmed Chalabi is in the news again. I post a lot about this shady character because the Neo-cons(PNAC) heavily courted this guy for years leading up to the Iraq War, including Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitiz, and Schuenenman (McCain's foreign policy advisor) and much of the so-called "faulty intelligence" that led us to war was provided by him.

Chalabi, after all his lies, is still resurfacing in Bush administration circles and affecting American policy. Even after all his predictions about Iraq did not pan out and suspicions grew, Gen. Petraeus still assigned him to a committe position in Iraq's government---in which he later had to be let go because of his murky ties to Iran. He is suspected of being tied to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps(IRGS) who is thought to be arming pro-Iranian renegade militia that atacked US and Iraqi troops.

Now Chalabi is back in the news AGAIN in trying to stall the status of forces agreement by raising doubts against it for the sake of Iran.

Now, the media won't cover this...or McCain's advisor like Shuenenmann and Charlie Black who lobbied extensively for Chalabi and his shadiness. And they have the nerve to accuse people of "palling around"



Chalabi's Star Rises Again with Iranian Intrigues in Baghdad

Ahmed Chalabi, the erstwhile Iraqi exile who intrigued with Pentagon officials and the media to create a casus belli for toppling Saddam Hussein, is up to his old tricks.

Chalabi's star plunged when it turned out Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, as the steady stream of informants he served up to the U.S. media maintained.

After the 2003 occupation, the crafty Shiite's effort to play a leading, if not top, role in Iraqi politics ended in humility when he won few votes at the polls. He did snag fleeting positions, as a deputy prime minister, oil minister and then the official in charge of rebuilding the capital's utilities.

But in part because of suspicions that he was an Iranian secret agent, U.S. defense officials, American commanders in Iraq, and even his neoconservative champions began to shun him.

A Pentagon investigation did not end in charges being filed, but in May, NBC reported that U.S. officials had "cut off all contact with controversial Iraqi politician Ahmed Chalabi, the former favorite of Washington's once powerful neoconservatives," because of "unauthorized contacts with Iran's government."

Chalabi faded from the international spotlight, but now he's back in action big time, says Aram Roston, an NBC investigative reporter and author of "The Man Who Pushed America to War: The Extraordinary Life, Adventures, and Obsessions of Ahmad Chalabi."

Roston calls Chalabi a "key figure" in Iranian efforts to scuttle the status-of-forces agreement that is under fierce negotiation between Baghdad and Washington.

"He is seen more and more by the U.S. as a foreign agent, an Iranian agent," Roston told me by telephone from Mexico, where he is vacationing. What Chalabi says is "equated" with the Iranian position on the status-of-forces agreement, Roston said, which it opposes.

During a visit to Iran in September, Chalabi said the agreement would be used by the U.S. to establish "secret bases" in Iraq. That allegation, and other unpopular items in it, such as exempting U.S. citizens from prosecution in Iraqi courts, has made it increasingly unpopular.


[Update: The U.S. raid into Syria last weekend has also generated Iraqi demands that the agreement include a prohibition on U.S. forces launching attacks on other countries -- read: Iran -- from Iraqi soil.]

Just yesterday, Oct. 28, a conservative Shiite newspaper in Baghdad featured Chalabi's opposition to the agreement, which has to be signed by Dec. 31 or the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq will be illegal. The U.S. has threatened to cut off aid.

"This time represents a black page in the country's history," Chalabi told Al Bayyna Al Jadidah, according to a translation provided to Roston by an Iraqi contact.

"Chalabi is influential," Roston said, not just because he's "backed by Iran," but also because top Iraqi Shia politicians "view him as someone who understands the Americans, that he has the wisdom to know what's going on in their minds."

For years, Chalabi was a fixture in Washington's corridors of power.

"He is a genius," Roston observed, "at staying relevant."

Chalabi needs to be arrested and sent to Jordan to answer for the crimes that he was convicted of.

Death sentence for Chalabi if the Jordanians get his ass, and he knows it.

He must have something on Bush and the Gang, because he would have been "dealt with" for hoodwinking the American Government and collecting major cheddar for hoodwinking them, too.

Ya'll I need check myself into a JJP detox program.

I had to go into the office yesterday (first time in 5 years) and I could not function. I kept thinking about logging into JJP to see what you all were talking about. They took my laptop to upgrade it (I now have a T61 model :-) but I had to wait 4 1/2 hours to get it.

I was suffering so bad that I snuck into a computer lab that was restricted to folks like me, and I know I should n't have but I had to do something. I just needed a quick fix. So I started surfing on JJP for about 45 mins but I stopped short of posting anything and I made sure I cleared out the queues so no one would know what I was looking at but . . . it was hard . Then it took me 3 1/2 hours to get home because of rush hour traffic, I had to take the dog to the vet and take my kids to get costumes for the halloween parade at school tomorrow but it was rough. I started having withdrawal symptoms, started snapping at the kids and my husband who went with us just because all I wanted to do was get home and log in to see what I missed.

I need help. Next Tuesday can't come quick enough.

I just want to say that even though i am excited about this election process, I am also embarassed at times. I look at this video and I wonder "Will these same college students be the next generations teachers, lawyers, doctors? Isn't this kinda juvenile? I understand free speech and all but are these America's next "forward thinkers" who will lead this country in the future. What ever happened to spreading the word about your viewpoints in a positive way.

How come a random gentleman like "Joe the plumber," whose supposed background has pratically been debunked and whose own words have been particularly troubling and misleading about Obama, still manages to be a central figure in this important election. Joe is even being considered for a record deal.

And yet, by all accounts, Obama was a hardworking intellectual, admired by other colleagues and students...and he's been labeled "uppity" and "elitist" because he is actually pragmatic, forward-thinking and obtained a good education on his own merits.

I pray that one day this country will abandon the"insta-celebrity fever" we have and truly teach our children everywhere to be thoughtful, informed, and hardworking. I think reality tv has fucked this country up---even the media is tabloid-ish.

Let us value our best and brightest. I am getting tired of caricatures and pitting this group against the other.

It is no wonder we lag behind so many other nations in education and new technology---we simply don't value the importance ot it the way we should. And it shows. Will we continue to show the world this...because we know they are watching.

On the one hand I agree with you; on the other hand, you don't go nearly far enough. An Obama presidency means much more than a truce in the 60’s culture war. It means the end of a much older and more terrible war, in which the 60's was merely one battle: the American Civil War. That is what is at stake here.

The Civil War was fought from Sumter to Appomattox, from April 12, 1861, to April 9, 1865. But the roots of the war predated 1861, and the consequences lived on long after 1865. In reality the Civil War never ended, it just shifted from a military to a culture war - the same culture war that is still going on today.

What you call the “boomer warfare” of the 1960’s was part of that larger war, marking the struggle to end Jim Crow, the century-long regime of American apartheid (Vietnam was, in my opinion, related but secondary). The end of apartheid was a second humiliating defeat for the forces of the conservative "South" at the hands of the liberal "North", and it subsequently gave rise to those decades of distorted and irrational politics you so deplore, as the reactionary and fundamentalist forces regrouped and mounted yet another rearguard insurrection against their liberal "oppressors", culminating in their partial ascension to power under Bush. (And we can only hope it ends there, instead of with Palin and the Christian Nationalists in 2012).

I realize this may sound harsh; I do not think Bush is a racist, for instance (quite the contrary), and I am very aware of the progress made in this country since I was young, including in the South; nevertheless, this election is clearly about race, about who and what we are as a nation, as a people, as a family (I would throw California's Prop 8 squarely into this battle too).


So let's be clear - it is not "boomer warfare" which has distorted our politics, or made rational politics so elusive since the 60's: it is something far deeper, something far older, something which has been with us from the beginning in this country, and which we in turn brought with us from the Old World; something which in fact traces back to the very origin of humanity - spiritually, psychologically, politically, evolutionarily. That depth is what gives the American story its pathos and its importance. That is why the world watches us: to see if we can work it out - to see if there is hope.
And that's why January 20, 2009, is so important: the day Barack Obama is sworn in as our 44th president will mark the third, and I believe the final defeat of the forces of repression and division in this country, and the actual end of the American Civil War.

How can I be so sure? Because when the American President is inaugurated, it is directly homologous to the crowning of the King in ancient days: the King is the groom, the Nation is the bride, the crowning is the hieros gamos, the sacred marriage. When Barack Obama is sworn in as our 44th president, a symbolic marriage will be enacted, binding us together forever, black and white. We will have chosen to become one. We will have chosen to become family. The War will be over. E pluribus unum.

The whole world will be watching this. You have stated over and over again that an Obama presidency would be “transformational”, even “indispensable”. You're right. And you're right that this is only the beginning. A new chapter is dawning.

Will the old guard resist? Of course. But their power is waning. Providence made sure the better man lost in 2000, and the eight years since have been just enough rope for the old, corrupt right to hang itself.

Nilesen releases viewership of Obama infomercial
Not sure how to read this, but a survey saying that nearly 22 percent of the nation's households watched the 30-minute infomercial isn't that bad.

Nielsen just released last night's ratings of Barack Obama’s national campaign spot for the 56 local markets where we have meters.

* Overall, for the six networks that aired the program simultaneously, the spot had a household rating of 21.7% (meaning that 21.7 percent of all households watching television were tuned to the spot.)

* In comparison, the final debate between the two presidential candidates received a 38.3 household rating in the top 56 local TV markets. The candidates’ first debate on September 26 received a 34.7 household rating in the top 55 markets; their second debate, on October 7, received a 42.0 household rating in those markets.

* The last presidential candidate to air a paid simulcast was Ross Perot in 1996, which received a national household rating of 16.8.

* Last night, the Baltimore market had the largest TV audience, with a household rating of 31.3, while the Portland market had the lowest household rating: 14.2.

Comic strip spurs controversy at Montclair University

The student newspaper at Montclair State University has apologized for publishing a comic strip that referred to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with a racial slur.

Bobby Melok, editor-in-chief of The Montclarian, told The Star-Ledger of Newark that the newspaper got the strip — “The K Chronicles,” penned by syndicated cartoonist Keith Knight, who is black — through MCT Campus, a syndicate that provides content for colleges across the country. Melok said a production editor placed it on the comics page without raising a flag.

“We assumed because it was part of the syndicate, it was appropriate,” Melok said.

The strip, which was published in editions on Oct. 23, was entitled “Stories from the campaign trail.” It depicts an Obama campaign volunteer who goes door to door in an area where “no Democrat has gone before.” When the volunteer asks a woman her choice for president, the resident identifies her candidate with a racial epithet.

Here in a New York Times article, Saxby Chambliss explained that the Republican base is energized because of the following:

"There has always been a rush to the polls by African-Americans early," he [Chambliss] said at the square in Covington, a quick stop on a bus tour as the campaign entered its final week. He predicted the crowds of early voters would motivate Republicans to turn out. "It has also got our side energized, they see what is happening," he said.

I can't believe this mofo has the nerve saying that. That may explain why we see tightening in the polls. Most of it coming from the south. The Republicans can't stand to see people exercising their right to vote. Screw them! We'll teach them a lesson!

Except that he's lying. Black voters haven't always rushed to the polls early. In fact, the opposite is true.

I'm not surprised a Republican said it. Still though, if he has to hope that 'their side' comes in hopes of canceling out Barack Obama supporters--and not because of enthusiastic support of John McCain--I'm not going to place much stock on that being very fruitful.

But, despite it all, we're coming out . No matter how many obstacles they put before us - we're coming out.

"The Obama-mercial was fairly highly rated across the three broadcast networks (CBS, Fox and NBC) in the early metered market numbers. Between the three networks it scored an impressive combined 17.8/29 (household rating/share).

If ABC truly hoped that by being only scripted programming on broadcast for 8:00pm-8:30p, it would help out Pushing Daisies, that plan went awry. My guess is ABC was more likely just looking to burn off an episode. Daisies scored a 4.2/7, pretty much the identical rating it had a week ago up (4.2/6). The good news is things didn’t get worse. But, unless there was a major up tick of 18-49 viewers, not getting worse won’t help any."

I'm glad that the informercial did well...but man, did it bury Pushing Daisies, which is likely to be canceled. And I like that mystery solving pie maker, too.

Number one, John McCain is NOT closing Obama's margin as quickly as he needs to (if indeed he is closing it at all). This appears to be a 6- or 7- point race right now ... that's where we have it, that's where RCP has it, that where Pollster.com has it. In order to beat Barack Obama, John McCain will need to gain at least one point per day between now and the election. Our model does think that McCain has pared about a point off Obama's margin -- but it has taken him a week to do so. Now, McCain needs to gain six more points in six more days. And he needs to do so with no real ground game, no real advertsing budget, and no one particularly strong message. Not easy.

Number two, John McCain is NOT gaining ground in the states that matter the most. The top tier of states in this election are Virginia, Colorado and Pennsylvania. There is lots of lots of polling in these states, particularly in Virgnia and Pennsylvania, and it's all coming up in roughly the same range, showing Obama leads in the high single digits (in VA and CO) or the low double digits (in PA). The second tier of states is probably Ohio, Florida and Nevada. McCain seems to be getting a bit stronger in Florida; Obama seems to be getting a bit stronger in Ohio and Nevada. McCain does seem to have halted Obama's progress in some of the third-tier states, particularly Missouri and North Carolina. On the other hand, some other third-tier states, like New Mexico and particularly New Hampshire (where Obama is getting some insane numbers lately), now appear to be off the table.

But isn't it good that the MSM is saying that it's close? Maybe that will shut down the complacency among Obama supporters, and give some of us the incentive to fight even harder.

What's even funnier is McCain's claim in a Wednesday speech that 'we're fooling the pundits and the polls', which almost mirrors his 'We've got Obama right where we want him' in an earlier stump.

So being behind in the polls has been McCain's plan all along. Right.

"'Joe' – aka Samuel Wurzelbacher, a Holland, Ohio, pipe-and-toilet man – just signed with a Nashville public relations and management firm to handle interview requests and media appearances, as well create new career opportunities, including a shift out of the plumbing trade into stage and studio performances."

"Toilet Man" is appropriate reference to Joe and should also be the name of the one hit he may produce from Funky Finger Productions.

The artist title etc does not always show up when you hold down the mouse - sometimes it's just numbers or letters. Also, most readers will not bother to make this click, nor should they have to.

More important, an embedded link doesn't show up on a Google search or a Technorati search. if someone wanted to find an artist's work and did a Google search for them, the posting on a blog that didn't use a title in the text would not show up. I have no idea, for instance, if my work has been used in blogs without attribution, or if then people have bootleg copies of my work. In general, I give permission for blogs to use my work, but it drives me nuts when they do so without permission or attribution.

In addition to the legal issues of copyright and permissions, it is a matter of respect. Take the example of Gordon Parks. He's an amazing photographer. Wouldn't you want to know about him, assuming you didn't already? Wouldn't you want your readers to know about him? Doesn't he deserve the respect of attribution?

If part of the mandate of a blog is to educate, why lose the opportunity to educate readers about visual artists? For sure, JJP or any other reputable blog would not lift a quote from, say, Ralph Ellison, and use it without citation. It just wouldn't happen. Yet many blogs use art and photography without attribution to illustrate posts. This is just not ethical. I say this as an artist and artists rep.

I do understand that many people just don't think about this, I know that t JJP and (many) other blogs have the best of intentions, but have probably just not thought about it, yet.. Most bloggers think more about words than about images. So I'm taking this opportunity to do a little outreach on the issue.

Each image should say - right underneath the image - the name of the artist, copyright information including date, and at least one link to the artist's site or wikipedia or museum, gallery etc. And, as I said before, if the artist is living, they should be contacted if possible. Some artists grant permission, other's don't. It's a tricky copyright negotiation, in which artists can actually lose the right to control publication and sale of their work.

I hope this isn't too harsh, but I'm trying to make a living and a reputation as an artist's rep and and artist, and this is a daily battle for me and the artists I represent.

I'd so much rather be stressing about art than about the election. I can't wait until Obama is elected so I can resume my daily life in art instead of phone banking, fund raising and nail biting.

As a working artist and photographer, as well as a gallery owner who represents many wonderful artists, I am asking that JJP and all of you who blog will remember to give credit and links to any artists whose images you use. And if the artist is still alive and within hailing frequency, it's best to ask permission first. Most of us are pleased to have the recognition and publicity, but without a citation there is neither.

Obama Seriously Considering "Late Surge" into Arizona

The campaign is now seriously examining a late surge into the state. That may include ramping up TV advertising, on-the-ground staff or even deploying the candidate to stop there. Obama is scheduled to make a Western swing late this week, making an Arizona visit possible.

According to Pollster.com’s averages, Arizona is a 6 point race in McCain’s favor, compared to Pennsylvania--McCain’s best hope of picking up a blue state--which is an 11-point race in Obama’s favor. That means Obama has more reason to travel to Arizona than McCain does to Pennsylvania, no matter how far-fetched it once seemed to try to win McCain’s home state.
