The Mudflats poll had “compulsive blinking” as the number 3 most annoying McCain-ism of the debate, after the “hideous death grin” and Joe the plumber.
True, the blinking was incessant throughout, but this one particular moment was the blinking highlight of the debate. McCain has been asking over the course of two debates now, for the dollar amount of the fine that Barack Obama would impose on small business owners for not providing health care. He finally got his answer. “Zero.” This apparently unanticipated answer caused a screeching sound in McCain’s brain that almost got picked up by the microphones, causing him to shift from “smug” to “deer in the headlights” in 1.8 seconds flat.
The outcome, for those of you keeping track at home was a whopping 54 blinks in 28 seconds. That’s almost two full blinks per second, never mind the untold mental whiplash for McCain. Just for fun, try watching the video above and blink along.
Racism At Palin Rally: "Blacks Will Take Over" (VIDEO)
It was kind of strange, dintcha think, that John McCain came to the defense of his supporters last night after Barack Obama pointed out that people at McCain/Palin rallies were shouting out "terrorist" and "kill him!" in reference to Obama.
Now an Al Jazeera camera crew caught the honest sentiments of McCain/Palin supporters at an Ohio rally:
"I'm afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over. He's not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country gonna end up like?"

rikyrah: The Gov.'s hair is slowly "SLITHERING" back up into that "bee-hive!" Hmmm?
They wheeled George Wallace in backwards and then lifted him onto a seat behind his bullet-proof lectern. Confetti, thrown by little girls in straw hats, caught in his swept-back hair. Wallace waved to the crowd.
We were in Southie — South Boston — in February 1976, and Wallace was running for president. Five hundred people were packed into a small hall, and 300 more waited outside in the cold.
Wallace had been shot and paralyzed in Laurel, Md., during the presidential primary in 1972. A lot of people remember that. But not everyone remembers that he also won the Maryland primary that year, just like he won primaries in Michigan, Florida, Tennessee and North Carolina.
SKIP A LOT
The name of George Wallace, who died in 1998, was invoked a few days ago by Rep. John Lewis, Democrat of Georgia and a civil rights leader. Lewis likened the rhetoric of Wallace to the rhetoric of John McCain and Sarah Palin.
“Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse,” Lewis said. “George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Ala. As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all.”
It was a shocking statement. (And it was meant to shock.) McCain was stunned. In August, at a public forum, McCain had named Lewis as one of the “wisest” people he knew and a person he would “rely on heavily” during his administration.
SKIP
But McCain is resisting. So far. He wants to get out of this presidential race without being accused of racism.
And that was the point of John Lewis’ very strong statement. Lewis was issuing a warning to McCain.
<b.He was saying: Don’t go there. Don’t even think about going there. Don’t lay down the hay where the goats can get it.
In the much-anticipated final presidential debate of the 2008 campaign season, the man who landed the greatest number of punches, say the commentators, ultimately lost the debate. Despite the invocation of a terrorist, it was a plumber who may have been McCain's undoing. Salon's Joan Walsh explains it this way:
John McCain promised to kick Barack Obama's "you know what" on Wednesday night. He hinted that he'd bring up former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers and worse. Instead McCain bludgeoned Obama with Joe the Plumber, and the effect was more farce than fierce.

Did Obama just blow the election? Barack Obama actually told that Joe the Plumber guy that he wants to "spread the wealth around." Talk about playing into the most extreme stereotype of your party, that it is infested with socialists.
Note this Gallup poll from June:
When given a choice about how government should address the numerous economic difficulties facing today's consumer, Americans overwhelmingly—by 84% to 13%—prefer that the government focus on improving overall economic conditions and the jobs situation in the United States as opposed to taking steps to distribute wealth more evenly among Americans.

So...umm...where have you been in the last month when a Wall Street bailout was initiated by Republican president George W. Bush to save the very wealthy banking institutions? A bailout that both John McCain and barack Obama voted for.
Oh, I forgot. Your kind only thinks it's fair to let the average American pay for Wall Street and large corporations, and not the other way around. Sorry to tell ya but all Americans are socialists now as a result of this bailout. And now you see what Republican/Phil Gramm-esque economic policies have done to this country.
indie-ed
I am talking about Obama's tax policy, which BTW NO ONE here can defend.
If we are all socialists now it is thanks to the 'affordable housing' proponents at ACORN, Fannie and Freddie and the House and Senate Committees headed by Frank and Dodd.
Raising taxes and restricting trade is the recipe used by Herbert Hoover and it is the program being pushed by Obama.
Monie
Ya know, the Bush tax cuts worked so well that:
----The U.S. unemployment rate is at 6.1%--- the highest in 5 years. Over 700,000 jobs have lost since the beginning of this year alone. I guess all those nice tax breaks for the wealthy have created loads of jobs---NOT.
The US budget deficit will surge past a RECORD half trillion dollars next year by the Bush administration(not including the war budget)--while the Bush tax costs will cost the country $200 billion a year. And John McCain wants to continue these tax cuts.
But since you are a McCain troll--i think you should know that McCain once vigorously OPPOSED the Bush tax cuts before he politically pandered to the Rethugs in his blind ambition to become president.
Sen. McCain was one of only two Republican senators to oppose the 2001 tax cuts and one of only three GOP senators to oppose the 2003 reductions. Furthermore, his reason for opposing the cuts was taken straight from the playbook of the most radical left-wing Democrats. In 2001, Sen. McCain argued, "I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us at the expense of middle-class Americans who need tax relief."
So you need to ask John McCain how can he defend his flip-flop on the Bush tax cuts (he sounded just like Barack Obama in 2001 and 2003)---, where did his conscience go? Oh, I guess his conscience went to the same place his promise to run a respectful campaign went.

Wave Of McCain Robocalls Reported, Some May Violate State Law
From Huffpo:
The McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican National Committee launched a massive robocall campaign on Thursday designed to alarm voters about Barack Obama's past association with former radical Bill Ayers. The committee may be violating state law in the process.
The call begins: "Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC," before telling recipients that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans."
So much for not caring about a washed up terrorist.

How about defending Obama's redistributionist tax policy instead?
Stop with your distortions, you know good and well that his tax policy is not promoting socialism. Go sing that song and dance to the Walmart family ... whom I believe rake in ... wait ... lemme break it down ...
The average medium income of American households in 2006:
48,200 with over 36 million people living in poverty
Average pay of the American White Collar worker 15,000- $25000
Notice I left out blue collar workers. The first number should tell the tale about that!
Average income of the Walton family members: 10.4 billion dollars
Welcome to The Walmart Family
So taxing these folks a little higher is your idea of Socialims and wealth redistribution?
Yet individually they made this in 2007
Christy Walton 16.3 billion Jim Walton 16.3 billion S Robson Walton 16.3 billion Alice Walton 16.1 billion Ann and Nancy Walton a combined 4.3 billion
Then in 2008
Jim - 19.2 billion Christy - 19.2 billion S. Robson - 19.2 billion Alice Walton - 19.0 billion Ann and nancy a combined 5.2 billion
Seems like they are doing okay in this trash heap economy. We can't possibly tax them a bit more ... now can we??
meanwhile ...
The Walton's of Anti- union, anti healthcare and anti workers rights, Walmart, pays their full time sales associates and cashiers an average of 8.23 an hour or less, which is below the basic living wage standards AND below the poverty line. These jobs (sales associate and cashier) make up more than a third of Walmart's job force.
We are only speaking of their American work force at the moment ... we don't even want to talk about their oversea's atrocities ... as if their worker's record wasn't bad here. IT could be worst for us in the US.
Do you think walmart makes up for this by providing
healthcare or both health and dental for it's employees ...?
um hell no.
In fact they refuse to provide healthcare to their employees
and have taken to bullying tactics by 'discouraging them"
from voting for candidates that support the Employee free
choice act.
Hmm ... while you are (as usual) copying those poorly written
Republican talking points, they are fucking the "average
working American" right up the ass with a hard stick of
corporate greed.
There is no doubt that Walmart supports the Republican party
(overall), they've donated more to them than any other party. They know who supports their good ole' American values.
How dare Obama, attempt to tax the poor downtrodden Walton's and their corporations, in our society ... how ever will they get by?!
Walmart gets more than 250 billion in annual revenues.
They are only ONE company getting fat off the backs of other's in this country.
I'm not a math or economics whiz but geez ... something seems a bit off. Under Obama's tax plan taxes on the top income bracket in our country will go from 35% to 39%. Let's take the waltons, with a combined income of 10.4 billion ... they're individual fortune would go down to 4.0 billion. Hey they may have to forgo a few houses, but that tax money can be used to rebuild our crumbling infrastrutures, pay our military service members more. Provide healthcare for All americans (including their own employees) bring down the deficit so our ass isn't owned by human right's violating China ... and the list goes on.
So Sit, down and STFU ... you are the weakest link ...
Goodbye!

You see, Joe Wurzelbacher is apparently related to Robert Wurzelbacher. Who is the son-in-law of (are you ready...?) Charles Keating!
Yes, that Charles Keating. The Charles Keating of the Keating 5 Scandal. For which John McCain was reprimanded by the United States Senate, for his involvement in attempting to illegally influence government regulators. The Charles Keating who John McCain has been trying to avoid have mentioned. So, he basically mentioned it 24 times.
(By the way, lost in all the attention paid to John McCain not getting the same career-ending censure by the Senate, as did the other four defendants - the reason for that is because he'd been in the House of Representatives at the time of his transgression. The Senate decided that they didn't have jurisdiction over him to give the same penalty. So, his career was saved.)
Anyway, back to Robert Wurzelbacher, Joe the Plumber's father. You see, Robert Wurzelbacher was an executive of American Continental Corporation, the parent company of Charles Keating's Lincoln Savings. That's the bank which caused citizens to lose their life savings and cost U.S. taxpayers $3.4 billion. As part of that scandal, Robert Wurzelbacher pleaded guilty to three counts of misapplying $14 million and served 40 months in prison.
And now, Lincoln Savings, Robert Wurzelbacher and Joe the Plumber are back with John McCain.
"Congratulations! You're rich!," indeed.

The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled “kill him” when presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s name was mentioned during Tuesday’s Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.
Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.
“I was baffled,” he said after reading the report in Wednesday’s Times-Tribune.
He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.

Secret Service Blocking Reporters At Palin Rallies: Milbank
Arlington, Va.: The Secret Service has now labeled the "kill him" report as unfounded. Why isn't The Post giving this report as much coverage as the original false report received?
Dana Milbank:
Glad you asked, because I saw this earlier. This is actually about the incident in Scranton, not the one in Clearwater, Fla, that I wrote about here.
I wasn't at the Scranton event, but I have to say the Secret Service is in dangerous territory here. In cooperation with the Palin campaign, they've started preventing reporters from leaving the press section to interview people in the crowd. This is a serious violation of their duty -- protecting the protectee -- and gets into assisting with the political aspirations of the candidate. It also often makes it impossible for reporters to get into the crowd to question the people who say vulgar things. So they prevent reporters from getting near the people doing the shouting, then claim it's unfounded because the reporters can't get close enough to identify the person.
You figure if it's loud enough to make national TV, it would be loud enough for someone else to hear it. And I'm guessing if that "someone else" was a law enforcement officer, it would be cause for concern.
Then again, I don't know. I didn't hear about this incident, so I can't say one way or another. The ones from last week, though, were pretty unmistakable (though it does beg the same question.....).
Shooting the messenger will backfire on Obama because this is not about Joe, but rather how Joe has correctly exposed Obama's tax policy for what it is.
Obama views taxation as a means of implementing fairness. The redistribution of wealth as determined by government and not by the EARNER of the wealth. Joe is a guy who wants to work hard, get ahead, own a business, become the boss, make more money...pursue the 'American Dream'and yet he knows that under Obama he will 'punished for his success.' Joe knows that under Obama he will see his hard earned money confiscated by the government and handed over to someone who did not earn it.
'Joe the Plumber' gets it. Obama told him, work harder, and I will take your money to help 'spread the wealth.'
McCain is right to pick up on Joe's assessment and hammer it home.
Objects in the rear view mirror are closer than they appear.
Have you heard of a calculator?! Do you know how to add and subtract? My taxes would go up nearly 5% and I don't make anywhere near $250K. Under the McCain plan his piddly little health insurance tax credit doesn't cover the costs of my insurance AND doesn't consider the additional taxable amount he'd be adding on. It's a lie and a sham.
Yes, you are punished for your success by having public schools, libraries, policemen, and fire trucks that come when you call them, even if you're just one prankster. They'll treat each call as real.
I think the Republicans have cast taxes in a way that would look stupid in their own eyes. How can they propose to live in a society governed by the rule of law with public benefits and protections funded by taxes ...and NOT want to pay taxes.
I did say want because I believe Joe (not the faux plumber) was right when he called it patriotic to pay. What is unpatriotic is the THEFT of money and service by inappropriate uses of taxes.
But Republicans talk infinitely more about not wanting to pay than about stopping the misuse. Very American!
I will be willing to let Joe off the tax hook if, after getting more and more successful he agrees to use proportionally less of public services - highways, libraries, police, fire, etc.

Check out this old episode of Adam West's Batman. The penguin is debating Obama and slinging mud at him, he attacks Batman as a mysterious figure with crimnal associations. Remind you guys of anyone?
Did you guys hear about this paper?? The publisher was on CNN this afternoon. It's a black woman who says she's publishing the names of people who didn't vote in the Primaries because people died for them to get the right to vote!!
She said people were seeing their family members' names on there and calling them. The CNN segment was called the "shame game".
I saw that report, and I completely disagree with this tactic for a couple of reasons:
1) We don't know why the person didn't vote. What about people who don't vote for religious reasons (Jehova's Witnesses for instance)?
2) This is a free country, and individuals are free to exercise their right to vote or not to vote. Although my personal belief is that people should vote, I respect that it is THEIR right to decide.
Who the Eff is this lady to decide that she is gonna shame somebody into voting? Maybe I don't like that cheap ass beauty supply store wig she was wearing, but I acknowledge her right to wear it. That's what's really wrong with the so called moral majority. They think they know what's best for EVERYBODY, and then proceed to enforce their views on EVERYBODY. Big Brother here we come...
TruthSeeker
1) I don't think being a Jehovah's Witness is an excuse not to vote!!!! I have no respect for their cultish posturing.
2) Not for African Americans it's not! AA's have a special responsibility to exercise the right that others died to secure. They have an obligation to at least attempt to vote.
3) I don't give a damn about her wig. There is much at stake in this election.
1) I can understand you not agreeing with the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses, but are you suggesting that just because you view them as a cult they don't have the right to excercise their religious beliefs (which happen to dictate abstaining fromthe political process)?
2) Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you that black people ought to exercise their voting rights to honor those who died to allow us to have that option, if for no other reason. But more important than this belief, I believe that people have the freedom to make that choice or not on a personal level--even black people.
3) The bad beauty supply wig was my attempt at illustrating the lady's right to make choices on a personal level. Perhaps a bad illustration...
My point here is that it is a really slippery slope when we begin to attempt to dictate personal decisions on the basis of what is deemed to be a moral obligation by some. I stand by my original outrage at the nerve of this woman to attempt to shame people into the political process because it's what SHE thinks they ought to do. Again, I feel this despite the fact that I hold the personal belief that it is important that people be contributing members of society (which includes participating in the political process). Black, white, brown, yellow, or red, people have the right to decide to be who they want to be on a personal level. I have the right to be outraged by their decision, but I do not have the right to force my belief on others.
TruthSeeker
1) They have the responsibility to exercise their humanity. You suggest they take benefit from political "rights"; yet suggest they should abstain from the process which provides those rights. It's a disgrace - especially for an African American - not to vote. I don't give a damn what the reason is. There religious belief is ignorance, disguised.
2) No. They don't get a "choice".....not on this subject. Until the day African Americans have FULL equality and opportunity - they don't get a damned choice!
3) I bet they got a shock when they opened the paper that morning. Maybe the'll be pissed off enough to go to the polls. Her grandson's name was on that list. He lied to his grandma that he voted in the primaries. These same people complain of every injustice that befalls them, yet don't vote. They should put their names on the digital billboard on the interstate.
1) Where did I suggest that they should abstain? In fact I stated the exact opposite from a personal perspective.
Since when does humanity = participation in the political process? On the contrary my interpretation of the expression of one's humanity involves the acceptance of people's right to their own ideologies regardless of their views (be they political, religious or otherwise).
The fact that I may personally disagree with one's chosen viewpoint does not imply that the person has no right to express that viewpoint (albeit ignorant in my view). Again, I agree with the position that people SHOULD participate in the political process, especially black people. From my personal viewpoint, it is a disgrace when black people don't vote out of apathy.
2) They don't get a choice? WOW...
3) I agree that if you silence yourself by not voting, you have no right to complain about ANYTHING. I still don't think that this personal decision gives OTHERS the right to attempt to implement the equivalent of the virtual scarlet letter.
Clearly we'll have to agree to disagree, and that's the beauty of having the freedom to express one's ideologies regardless of what they are. I believe that this just underscores my original point.

That's right, the don't get a choice. There's a reason why John and Sarah are not spewing anti-semitic bullshit at Jews. It's because JEWS VOTE.
Rick's doing a story on early voting.....everybody's saying "surge" McCain's favourite word..hahahah. This is one surge that WILL work, McCain! Poor McCain, he's like the three stooges all in one.

Ok, it's official - Katie Couric is Beelzebub in a frock..."befuddled" she says in that cheerful voice of hers.....hahahahah. McCain didn't know what hit him, but he manages to invoke the bible - that old standby for scoundrels.
Barack this morning: “For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky and think this is all set, I just say one word. I guess it’s two words for you: New Hampshire. You know, I’ve been in these positions before where we were favored and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked. And so that’s another good lesson that Hillary Clinton taught me.”
keep the fight up, stay on offense. IT AINT OVER!!
Im already tired of this "Joe the Plumber" crap. They are so desperately trying to find their "October Surprise". Trying to portray this dude as an "everyman" (AKA white), Wouldn't surprise me if he was planted there, he is a registered Republican.
McCain got his ass handed to him again last night, kept rolling his eyes, you can tell so much that he cant stand the fact that this BLACK guy is going to deny him his "right" to be President.

Obama's original response to Joe on the street in Ohio, was almost prescient. It was the perfect response in light of what we've since found out about Joe.
Kat-Mo
Out of everything said at the debate last night, the thing that kept going around and around in my mind was Senator Obama's claim that "only 2% of small businesses" would be affected by his plan to raise taxes on incomes of $250,000 or more. As if this had no real impact on the growth of small businesses or the number of people employed.
Small businesses are responsible for 80% of the job creation in the United States every year. While many small businesses only employ the owner, there are literally millions of small businesses that employ 1 to 499 employees. That's the cut off for small businesses that Sen. Obama would like to re-define. He wants to classify single owner, single employee businesses as "not small businesses as we invision them". Exactly what else should they look like if not someone working for themselves? Isn't that the American Dream?
Of course, Sen. Obama's entire purpose is to whittle down this number in the Public's mind so that when he talks about raising taxes he and we can pretend that it isn't really that big of a deal. Well, if it isn't that big of a deal, why do it at all?
The truth is, it is a big deal and it is a lot of money. There are over 662,000 small businesses making more than $250,000 a year in the United States. These are not "fat cat, mega corporations". They range from single owner/employee to small manufacturers with 500 employees or less. Together, they employ millions of Americans.
These are companies like the small manufacturer in New Jersey with 100 employees who makes special ballistic glass inserts for military jets and vehicles that protect our men and women in uniform. They are companies like metal fabrication company right here in Kansas City that employs 50 and makes custom steel parts to any specification for companies all over the world.
Or the plastic manufacturer who employs 150 that contracts with auto manufacturers to make small parts for cars. A manufacturer who is already having to scramble to make ends meet due to the rising cost of fuel and materials, who is trying to find new business to keep his company open and his people employed since the auto manufacturers, his biggest contract, started slowing down and closing their factories.
Or the solar light company, producing solar street lights that have made Iraq and many other small countries with poor electrical infrastructure safer and energy efficient. With better lighting, businesses stay open longer and help developing economies. This is a "small business", but they had an outsized impact on the war. The lights helped bring down the violence in Iraq and make our men and women in uniform safer so they can return home. These same lights are being installed today in cities and villages in Afghanistan. They employ over 100 people in the development and manufacturing of these lights. They are one of the "small businesses" that make over $250,000 a year that Sen. Obama wants to tax.
Then there is the electrician who lives down the street. He doesn't "look like a traditional small business". He doesn't have a "store front". He employs three other electricians. His "store front" is the vans with his company name on the side. Just like Joe the Plumber, he built his business over time with long hours and his own money. Then he "spread the wealth" the right way by employing three other men who earn a decent living and support their families.
These are the "small businesses" that Sen. Obama wants to increase tax on as if they were truly some giant conglomerations owned by cigar smoking, fat cats getting rich off someone else's sweat. These are people who have been trying to build the American Dream and, through their hard work and perseverence, have given other Americans the opportunity to work towards their dreams, too.
In a recent ad, Sen. Obama claimed that a small company that traditionally made the thread for the United States flags moved their jobs overseas because they received "tax breaks" from our government to do it. Talk about dishonest. If Sen. Obama was honest about why that company moved, he would have to tell people that it wasn't because of "tax breaks", but because our government imposes extraordinary tax burdens on small businesses compared to other nations. The same taxes that Sen. Obama wants to raise. The same taxes that drive companies out of business and out of the United States.
Sen. Obama claims that it is "only 2%" of small businesses, but they represent the largest income and employment opportunities of all small businesses. These are the companies that are most likely to expand and create jobs in the United States. These are the small businesses that help keep America's economy going in good times and bad.
These companies represent 662,000 American Dreams.
Does it make sense to tax these companies during an economic down turn when they are already trying to keep their doors open and their people employed? Does it make sense to take money out of their pockets when they could use that money to expand their business and employ more people?
Sen. Obama claims he has the plan to help restore our economy. Instead, his plan looks like an assault on the American Dream.

Joe the Plumber tells Katie Couric:
“McCain was solid in his performance,” he says. “I still don’t know where he stands,” he says of Obama. “I’m middle class. I can’t have my taxes raised any more.”
He also says he actually isn’t in the bracket where Obama would raise his taxes — but he’s worried that Obama will shift the bracket down.
He also said that, in his encounter with Obama, the Illinois Senator “a tap dance…almost as good as Sammy Davis, Jr.”
I'm sensing a pattern with these McPalin supporters.

Obama figured he wouldn't get Joe The Plumber's vote, so it's all good.

Anyway, reporters and bloggers are getting ready to do an "anal probe" on Joe. They are snooping into his background. I suspect some unsavory things will eventually come to light.
Admiral_Komack
Kodos: "We have reached the limit of what rectal probing can teach us."
Ok, Joe the Plumber was supposedly born in Dec. 1973. That makes him 34 years old.
Sammy Davis Jr. died in May 1990.
Joe the Plumber would have been 16 years old.
What 16 year old white kid in Ohio would have REALLY been paying attention to Sammy Davis Jr.'s tap dancing skills?
Who has really thought about Sammy Davis Jr. (besides his family) since 1990?
He gets an epic FAIL for repeating the Republican talking points fed to him by people MUCH older than him.

WAL-MART OPPOSES OBAMA PRESIDENCY..... Wal-Mart<http://www.walmart.com/> is taking this outrageous step because Democrat Barack Obama has committed to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers' freedom to bargain for fair wages, health care, decent working conditions and a real voice on the job. All of America 's workers have the right to freely decide whom to vote for independent of employer pressure and intimidation. So, please forward this email to everyone you know. Be sure to get the word out. Let's hit them in their pocket book. STOP giving money to Wal-Mart Republ icans and Corporate Neo-Nazis. We need to let our money do our talking. DON'T SHOP AT WAL-MART. Let's take them to school and hit them where it hurts - in their greedy little pocket books! Corporate giants like Wal-Mart have been suppressing workers' wages and passing along health care costs to hardworking taxpayers like you for years. Wal-Mart executives are getting rich, while we're being left behind. They understand what is at stake in this election, and so do we--a real voice at work for:
-- Fair pay; -- Health care for all; -- Equal treatment; -- Safe workplaces; and -- A secure retirement. The Wall Street Journal<http://www.wsj.com/> reports that Wal-Mart is telling its managers to tell employees not to vote for Democrats (OBAMA). With all this talk about Joe the Plumber, when is someone going to address the plight of Kesha the Hairdresser? Kesha the Hairdress and Ty'rel the bus driver are all on the public dole. They live in the nice houses they can't afford, courtesy of ACORN. They both attend anti-American black churches and send their kids to public schools which teaches black children to hate America. And I have discovered the secret indoctrination plan that converts little ManMan and Neicy into Afro wearing, fist pumping militants:
8:30 am: Say the Pledge of Allegiance
9:15: Art Class
10:00 am: Math problems
11:00 am: Recess. Play dodgeball and kickball.
11:30 am: Lunch
12 pm: Spelling and Reading

2:00 pm: Go home
This powerful black indoctrination program ensures that Kesha and Terrence and Ty'rel all hate America, and after all we good (white) people have done for them [/snark]!!

Formal Complaint Filed With Alaska Attorney General To Investigate Palin’s Failure to Issue Juneteenth Proclamation Violating The Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act
The Alaska Attorney General’s Office received a formal complaint yesterday charging that Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin violated the law when she failed to issue a proclamation for the state’s Juneteenth Day in 2007. The holiday observance, which celebrates the freeing of the last remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, has been adopted in 29 states and was signed into law in Alaska in 2001. The bill known as HB 100 specifies that the “governor shall issue a proclamation observing the day.”
The formal complaint (#EH274215525) stems from a press conference held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on October 7, 2008 by jazz musician Gregory Charles Royal, who claimed Palin made a racially disparaging comment to him back in 1990 while touring Alaska with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. During that press conference, several representatives of the Juneteenth celebration in Alaska spoke to reporters about their concerns regarding Governor Palin’s race relations in Alaska.
The complaint was filed by Royal with the Alaska Attorney General’s Office as a violation of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act, the same act which Governor Palin was found in violation of in the ‘Troopergate’ scandal just last week. The statute provides, in this case, that a state official cannot withhold official action in order to affect a matter in which that official has a personal interest. The complaint maintains that the Governor’s historic record on race relations as stated by Juneteenth representatives and others, demonstrates a personal ideology of disengagement with the African American community — out of character with previous Alaskan administrations.
Cited in the complaint are Gwendolyn Alexander and Bishop Dave Thomas from the African American Historical Society of Alaska, and Reverend Ronald V. Myers, Chairman, National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign. Additionally, published comments from Eleanor Andrews, board chair of the Anchorage Urban League and attorney Rex Butler from an article by Linn Washington, Jr, columnist with the Philadelphia Tribune, were also included.
I am sooo excited by this!!! Look at the SIMILARITIES with the recently declared ETHICS VIOLATION!
She LACKS ETHICS!!!
How many more pieces of evidence exist!?? We can cite some! Waiting on the COURTS!! :>) :>)
OOOP! She did it again! [And I don't even like this song/the artist either! YUK!]
Besides Obama's obvious intellect, logical lawyer's mind, here's what I think will stick in people's minds about all three debates:
Whereas Obama remained unflappable, even dapper and debonair during tough times, looking increasingly energized as time went on, McCain looked increasingly frustrated and tired, barely able to contain his absolute hatred for the tall, dark and handsome Negro with a poet's gift for words and a younger, good-looking wife.
Whereas Obama and Michelle stayed and shook hands with everyone after the debates (including the janitors), McCain shook hands with the moderators then headed toward the door. It was as if he couldn't wait to get home, have a ham sandwich and milk and get some sleep.
I was agitated so much, yesterday, because I couldn't formulate my thoughts about this topic. THANK YOU for YOUR STATEMENT!!
EDUCATION is one of the biggest ISSUES under discussion. And in Mr. Obama, we have one who has the highest of intellects but the Repugs want ONLY to RELATE to "Joe 6-pack", "hockey/soccer moms" and NOW "Joe the plummer!" The OPERATIVE WORD --RELATE!!
That's where they reside INTELLECTUALLY! [I know, "their names" and "intellect" in the same sentence. OOPS! :>)]
I am NOT trying to diss anyone. So please forgive if I did.
But look at reality. McAncient/The Gov. DON'T "pal around with Joe 6-pack, an'em!" BUT, "they" USE THEM as their BASE!!
Sadly, "they don't realize that "they" are being PIMPED!! "They" NEVER will be invited to their home, social events or "the White House!" But, Ms. "Whatever" Cindy and The Gov. are PIMPED also! So, what else is new?
OTOH: Mr. OBAMA is INCLUSIVE and for errybody!! YES HE CAN!!!

Diane West: How could someone like Obama could be ahead at this juncture
WEST: I find it amazing. I think that a lot of our traditional beliefs about the way people think and act are being shattered in this election.
Obama is such a keep it real brutha...LOL..this is hysterical:
He may have been his top choice for running mate but even Barack Obama knows that Joe Biden has a tendency to give long speeches.
In last night's documentary on Obama and McCain on PBS's "Frontline," Rolling Stone magazine's Ben Wallace-Wells related an amusing anecdote about Obama attending his first meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which happened to be a confirmation hearing for Condoleezza Rice.
About midway through the meeting, Joe Biden is "going on and on" and Obama scribbles a note and passes it back to his aide.
The note said simply: "SHOOT. ME. NOW."
Michelle
Miranda, I've heard that story (maybe read it in the bio of him from that reporter, though I don't know that it mentioned Biden specifically, that's priceless) and I LOVE it. Always makes me smile to think about it.

Palin just lost A LOT of votes in Maine. She's a dumbass. She just said the license renewal fees get in the way of the private sector to do business.
In Maine, license renewal fees for the many small business are a big part of the tax base of a state government that has virtually no money.
Small business owners in Maine, and I'm one of them, are perfectly fine contributing our state's tax base, even when the state raises those fees by small percentages.

You all have great posts this morning so my comment may be a bit off but I need someone to talk me down.
What the heck was up with Michelle's choice of clothing. Who the heck put that crap around her neck? Again - I love Michelle Obama but she needs to fire whoever is advising her to wear that crap.
Town
Michelle's fashion choices have always been hit or miss with me. I think that because of her build and her figure, simple clothing looks best on her. I think anything overly fussy or busy is not a good look on her. And I think that sometimes she's a little too casual for the occassion (i.e. the night of Barack's acceptance speech). She needs to put Thakoon in the back of the closet (night of acceptance speech, one of the debate nights). While she may feel more comfortable in flats, perhaps she could compromise by wearing kitten heels when she wears skirts/dresses. And Gramma's Hats on a String and the Wilma Flintstone necklaces have got to go.
I don't think there's any need for Michelle to go the designer route even if she gets into the White House. Just because it's designer doesn't mean it's good (i.e. Thakoon's busy ass dresses). She has done pretty well mixing low end stuff with high end stuff. Maybe she could be the first First Lady to show American women you don't have to wearing $300K outfits to look great. But if she does go the designer route I hope she keeps wearing Maria Pinto (b/c she's served her well) and that she wears pieces from black designers as well.
Jay
This may be totoally inappropriate...but Michelle's kabowa! was showing last night, that dress was very form fitting. She's a brick house for sure.
However, Cindy's outfit was freaking BLINDING ME! That was definitely Martin Scorsese red, not a soft Christmas red. Dang!
Town
Cindy McCain looked like a piece of candy corn in all that orange.
Or maybe she was waiting for the Great Pumpkin.
Val
Jay - not inappropriate - Michelle has a hot body. She does. Which is why I can't understand some of her choices that doesn't do her justice.
Now, just curious - did you like her accessories?
Jay
Yes indeed...but her accessories are usually distracting. Very big and gaudy = me no likey.
MsKitty
I'll give it a shot. I think Michelle can't get too fashionista right now because that would feed into the "presumptuous" meme, not to mention some female voters might not consider her to be relatable if her wardobe is straight from Paris or Milan.
I think once Michelle gets in the White House, her glam factor will go through the roof. No doubt the top designers and stylists are duking it out as we speak to be the ones to get the nod from the new First Lady.
Teacher
We talked about this last night. The verdict was thumbs up for the dress, thumbs down for the mardi gras beads around the neck.
I agree with you, Kitty, that she will regain her former sense of glamour on or around Nov. 5th. I can't wait.
Val
MsKitty - I'm not talking Paris or Milan or even high end designer wear. I am talking about the decision to wear her mother's knick knacks around her neck.
I don't know what to say. Maybe I can do something to get those images out of my head. Thanks for trying though.
Texas_Girl_in_LA
Please do... because I think you are being a bit hard on Michelle and her choice of clothing last night.
Teacher
Why do you think this, TX Girl in LA? Sometimes I think Michelle is being rebellious because something is being asked of her that is, essentially, stupid. It is stupid for her choice of clothing to have the effect on O's campaign, period. Why can her choice of clothing have an impact on the campaign, but not Cindy's choices and not the fact that the Palin family have membership in a radical, subversive, successionist organization? It's hard to paint someone as militant and angry with fuzzy hats hanging on plastic pearls hanging around the neck. Even for me to question any of this is "playing the race card." In effect, we should be playing the whole deck, because there is clearly one standard for Michelle and another for white women. We understand and support Michelle, but the necklace didn't befit a woman of her stature.
Val
" It's hard to paint someone as militant and angry with fuzzy hats hanging on plastic pearls hanging around the neck." RAOTFLMAO!
Teacher --It isn't about a double standard. It is more like any woman going into a business meeting or who is front and center in the public eye. It is important to look your best. Just a pet peeve of mine. You don't have to have a lot of money to dress well. Michelle is gorgeous and her body is something to die for. She is intelligent, kind, commanding, is a great fantastic speaker but her choice on clothing leaves much to be desired. She was doing a speech today and when I glanced up and saw what she had on I changed the channel. . . .
FYI - we/voters were hard on Cindy McCain's choice on clothing before McCain picked Palin for his VP. Prior to that, folks were talking about her hair, her clothing, it was so bad that on some blogs some came out and said Cindy McCain looked like trailer trash and there was no excuse for her looking like she did with the money she had. Once Palin got on the ticket, Cindy made sure she looked great.
Folks also railed against Hillary Clinton regarding her pant suit choices etc. Remember everyone talked about her yellow pant suit that she always wore on Wednesdays? So no double standard.
Here is an article to prove it - Dear Cindy McCain, Please Pull Up Your Shirt And Tie Back Your Hair: An Open Letter In Pictures
Yes, there is definitely a double standard for Michelle. Last night when I saw her, my first thought...she's beautiful. That was it.
Elephants & Flowers
I'm six hours late getting to this thread. But, I agree with Texas-Girl. Michelle looked beautiful last night. Great dress, great color, great fit. The necklace wasn't too much, either.
FYI - Cindy looked much better with her short dirty-blond haircut from back in the day. The platinum blond and pale blue eyes are too jarring for me.
Okay D the surge was a success. Here are some reasons 1.For all intent and purposes Kurdistan is now a independent country 2.The jihadist that got training are now migrating to Afghanistan http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/world/asia/15... 3.Iran no longer has a enemy on their flank Yup Yup, you betcha it is a smashing success!!!
Monie
D., I briefly looked at this---I'll read it entirely later. Vets for Freedom are only focused on the troop level numbers when assessing surge success. I, and like others on JJP are not downplaying our troops contributions, but you have look at ALLl factors while assessing the surge.
Here are some other MAJOR factors with the surge:
----It is reported that satellite images showed that many Sunni neighborhoods in and around Baghdad were abandoned (due to ethnic cleansing) prior to the troop surge of 2007. Point blank: The people left. Throughout the course of the war, international humanitarian groups have estimated that 4 million Iraqis (15% of population) have been displaced, living in neighboring countries or other parts of Iraq.
---The U.S. began cooperating with many of the "Awakening councils" prior to the troop surge. The U.S. paid these groups and gave them weapons in exchange for dropping their opposition to the occupation.
--The rebellion of the U.S. backed Sunni sheiks against a-Qaeda terrorist in Anbar was well under way also before the surge.
---Another group, Sons of Iraq, which includes an estimated 90,000 Iraqis have also been cited as a major reason for a drop in violence. The U.S. is paying them $10 a day to protect neighborhoods and provide intelligence.
Much of the violence began to decline before and during the beginning stages of the surge. Our troops have been a band-aid in protecting the goals of the U.S. and Iraqi groups in their cooperation to quell the violence. But the surge is not just a black and white issue. The troops alone did not cause the violence to go down. It took ethnic cleansing, payola, and deals formed with former insurgents to get Iraq to the level it is today. The true indicator of how well political reconciliation will be measured is when U.S. forces are vastly decreased and the Iraqi forces and people are in control of their own country. Right now, U.S. troops are still primarily "policing" the country though many insurgents and Iraqi forces are taking a larger role than they have in the past.
BTW, Vets for Freedom was very partisan with their scorecard---they picked and choosed legislation that was favorable to McCain Republicans--of course, VVFis a more Republican leaning organization. IAVA looks at ALL legislation concerning veterans. Of course you know I raised my eyebrows at VVF after they paid frat boys to protest---they lost credibility with me.
VFF is a non-partisan organization. VFF PAC-which is separate from the parent group-has endorsed both Republicans and Democrats this year.
The scorecard looks only at legislation related to the war. A lot of those votes were along party lines. Of note, two Republicans-the senators from Maine-recieved failing grades.
Monie
The problem for me D. is that when you only look at legislation concerning the funding of the war itself---you ignore the boader picture of troop care afterwards. And many Republicans, including McCain, continue to vote against funding VA healthcare and other programs. That is a DISGRACE.
Many of our homeless in this country are veterans. Many veterans, including a large number for the latest two conflicts, are committing suicide and struggle with PTSD---and care is inadequate in many cases. Many veterans are struggling financially after they leave, due to a number of reasons including education and assimilating back into civilian workforce. And of course, the conditions at Walter Reed, where a large majority of injured troops from OIF/OEF was a complete disgrace but shed light on a broken system. The U.S. is NOT investing all that it should for troop care AFTER the troops come home.
To me, that is just as important as the course of the war itself. Our troops lives are not just affected while in battle, but many of the lasting effects continue long afterward, after many have exited the military. And that is why I regard IAVA , DAV, and Vietnam Veterans of America's scorecards as a better indicator of who "truly" supports our veterans overall.
Of course, I have the highest respect for all troops and veterans--I'm married to one and will be glad when he retires, which is still a while but he is over the 10-year mark. I just happen to look at this conflict from a different perspective. The vast majority of our armed forces always do the best that they can---though I feel the Bush administration failed them. tremendously. And that will always shape my opinions about Iraq.
.....and from a military spouse, that's a fair assessment.
VFF is a single issue group; we don't take a specific stance on the troop care issues. I imagine that we will, as the war begins to close. IAVA is the exact opposite; they focus on veterans' issues, and haven't taken a specific stance on the war.
Though I'm sure you've heard that even their non-partisan nature has been called into question.....
Monie
Fair enough...I'll check on the supposed "partisanship" you speak on regarding IAVA. But I still feel that IAVA and others give a more comprehensive window into real veteran legislation, not just war funds.
Our VA programs, for the most part only need a fraction of the $10 billion dollars we spend in Iraq in one month to continue to carry out their goals for one year. At the end of the day, both candidates,Obama and McCain, have voted against troop funding as protest votes when timetables became an issue. But in the greater scheme of things, Congress as a whole has been appoving the Iraqi war budgets . So I think it is safe to say that all of our leaders have "supported" this war by approving the financing for it---even if it means China owns our ass.
Don't bother: apparently, one of IAVA's guys is/was the "Veterans for Obama" coalition director. That's the beef. It was mostly fought out in the blogosphere.

In regards to Joe the Plumber, seems he isn't even registered to vote and someone is reporting that for someone getting ready to buy a business for $250k he isn't even registered in the local phone book.
"Say It Isn’t So, Joe! Wurzelbacher Not A Real $250K Plumber?
October 16, 2008
Joe The Plumber, aka Joe Wurzelbacher, the Toledo plumber who became the hot topic of the last Presidential debate due to his rope-line confrontation with Barack Obama’s over the Democratic candidate’s tax plan, may not be a plumber, and may not be planning to buy a plumbing business where he will be netting $250,000 a year.
He isn’t in the Toledo Yellow Pages, he isn’t registered to vote and it’s more likely that his existence as a plumber buying a $250K business is as sincere as Sarah Palin asking Joe Biden if she can call him “Joe.”
Isn’t it interesting that Joe is buying a business that is making a profit of exactly $250K, the Obama tax break minimum. If we’re talking a business that is bottom lining at $250K, a standard business acquisition falls into the 4 to 1 investment area, which would call for Joe
is buying a business that is making a profit of exactly $250K, the Obama tax break minimum. A normal business acquisition falls into the 4 to 1 investment area, which would call for Joe to come up with $1,000,000 to purchase his $250K business. If that plumbing business had assets like trucks, equipment and offices, the cost could be far more.
Add to that Wurzelbacher doesn’t appear in the Toledo Yellow Pages listings, yet has been able to put together at least a million to invest, especially in these dire economic times, you begin to wonder whether Joe is a plumber or did someone in the McCain campaign find him in central casting?
Most important, if he is really a plumber, where’ the ass crack?"

Two readers with access to the Ohio voter file say that Joe Wurzelbacher's inluence on this cycle will be limited in one way: He doesn't appear to be registered to vote.
(And yes, the freelance opposition research on Joe began before the debate ended.)"
They probably paid this guy a few bucks to harasssss Obama in the rope line. Then one of McCain's interns probably got the bright idea to make Joe the cornerstone of his debate speak. Hahaha... that's what McCain gets. I hope they do bunches of stories about good ole Joe the Plumber. Expose him for the fraud he is!
Town
I knew something was shady about Joe when I saw him on Good Morning America today saying that Obama was a "socialist," which is the talk radio talking point (among many) about Obama.
Loved Joe then Joe hate all in less than 24 hours.

Win a news cycle with this drivel and lose in the long run.It seems Old Joe seems to be related to Charles Keating Jr. Say it aint so Joe Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher related to Charles “the Crook” Keating. Oops. http://www.eisenstadtgroup.com/2008/10/15/joe-t...

And yet another campaign tactic blows up in McCain's face. Ha!

I saw a clip this morning on CNN where he said he's not at 250k yet.
Wow. What a debate, eh? Only a die hard low information rethug partisan could have heard that as a win for Mr. Morton (thanks to Field, I can't ever look at the man without thinking of him as Mr. Morton :-)
It's astonishing to me ~ and a measure of how twisted and out of touch our MSM pundits are ~ that they could confuse the bellicosity of John McCain with having anything to say.
He had nothing. He brought nothing to the table. He has nothing for the American people. Try as he might, he can't cover that up with bluster and accusations against his opponent.
And lies. Lying out his withered old ass. Makes you wonder (I am convinced of it) if the MSM's darling Great Warrior is nothing more than a craven, grasping, rudderless, conscienceless politician.
The differences between the two were stark. Again, the MSM. What a bunch of loonies. I think they have this meme they love to go back to; John McCain as the comeback kid. Only he can't come back. He hasn't got anything to bring to the table, he's never had anything, and it was so clearly evident last night.
Obama discusses with ease and obvious intelligence the complex issues of the day, offering policy proposals which he expects will address our greatest concerns, along with a big dose of hope that things can get better.
McCain blusters about tax cuts for the rich and small government. It's a no brainer for anyone with a brain. One man is intelligent, capable of complex thought, energetic, informed, did I say brilliant? And the other is tired, angry, capable only of pointing the finger of blame, while parroting the same old tired discredited rethug ideology.
Listening to McCain, I imagined various scenarios in which our country could get into serious trouble, and the possible rethug responses.
National Issue: CHINA IS THREATENING TO TAKE OVER CALIFORNIA! Republican Response: We must CUT the capital gains tax to ZERO!
National Issue: NEWLY ACTIVE VOLCANOES HAVE ERUPTED ACROSS THE PLAINS STATES, KILLING MILLIONS! Republican Response: We can only survive this by cutting the capital gains tax to ZERO!
National Issue: PEOPLE ARE STARVING IN THE STREETS AND TURNING TO CANNIBALISM! Republican Response: Only a cut in the capital gains tax ~ to zero ~ will save us!
Please. They have nothing else. Their solution to every issue is to give rich people more and fuck the rest of us. These motherfuckers are worn out, tired, over, done. Step back. Give it up. Your policies are bankrupt. Your theories disproven. Conservatism as a form of governance is a failure. Go home.
Here's my recap of the debate. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will fiind a faux disciplinary form, calling John McCain out on his flagrant acts during the debate.
Theoconservatism as a form of governance failed. The eight year lab experiment didn't work out that well.
Neoconservatism will need a major reinvention post-whatever happens in the War on Terror to survive. I think Americans prefer an aggressive foreign policy stance, as long as it doesn't border on rabid nationalism. As conservatives, that's a line we have to walk back over, cause we crossed it a while back.
I think Americans prefer an aggressive foreign policy stance, . . .
just a feeling? or is that based on some verifiable data?
"theoconservatism" is just one more myth the rethugs present to drag in a constituency.
bottom line, the republican party's goal is to serve the rich. if that comes about by way of deregulation, by way of starting wars in order to reap rich rewards belonging to other countries, by way of instituting tax policies that harm the vast majority of american citizens, well, that's just too bad for the majority of us.
you entirely miss the point of your party when you imagine that it is anything other than a front for the world's wealthiest. it's a theocracy only when that works to drag in support from folks who wouldn't otherwise vote against their self interest. it's a bastion of neoconservative "thought" only when that drags in a populace terrified by the prospect of a dangerous world when that population would be far better served by this country devoting itself to energey independence and reasonable foreign policy, both of which would make us far safer than preemptive wars.
of course the primary purpose of the most recent war is to destroy and rebuild, ensuring that republican cronies are vastly enriched on the backs of americans for generations to come. if that were not the case, we'd have fought the war in afghanistan instead of ridiculously setting our sights on iraq.
basically, D., your party sucks. deal with it. ;-)
what the GOP has is a disastrous theory of government, disastrous economic theories, harmful views of social issues.
that's not image. it's fact. it's like worrying about a skin rash when you've got a cancer eating away at your gut.
well, you're obviously feeling frisky this morning and just having a little fun yanking my chain. my chain is all excited and happy and full of joy as a result of my candidate kicking mcain's ass last night. it therefore refuses to be captured and yanked.
you're obviously a smart man and i really believe you wouldn't hang out here if you couldn't actually see your corrupt, decrepit, stinking party for what it is: a complete and utter failure.
You know what I find, most telling about a lot of the comments to this ... we are talking a 6 minute delay in the start of a sporting event and people are off their fucken rockers. I mean ... is our country not on the brink of economic meltdown? Are we not involved in two wars?
Who gives a flying fuck about a six minute delay in a baseball game, when you have the opportunity to hear what the "potential" next President of our country has to say about America's future and how he plans to work toward resolving these issues??
It can only be one thing ... they are racists. Scroll further and it's confirmed.
If they told Obama to kick rocks, their demographic would be happy, but they'd get hammered by the rest of the world. So they do this to intentionally piss off their demographic., knowing it could affect how they vote ("That damn terrorist interrupted the most American of sports!!") I bet whatever game this is ends up with terrible ratings.
Wish I had my satellite radio; I'd love to hear how this is going over on FNC.
Luckily, I ran off to do other things before responding to you right away.
*sighs*
I know, who is carrying the game. However, I've come to believe with all sincerity that Fox does not care about their so called "base." Obama is paying a whopping 1 million dollars for the ad ... and that ... 'my friend' is what Fox really cares about. The almighty dollar.
My post was not to discuss, Fox's airing of the ad, but to discuss the ignorance of people complaining about it. As if baseball is so important, but the failing of our economic structure and country as a whole ... is not.
McCain won...with his base. Last night was for them. They needed red meat; needed to see him come out, fight, and mention every little thing that was important to them. Which he did..though probably at the cost of the rest of the independents and undecideds that he hadn't already lost.
He stopped hemorrhaging last night, but he's still bleeding...severely.
At this point, it's a numbers game: can McCain mass enough of his base to defeat not only the Obama insurgency, but the people who just don't hear McCain speaking about their issues?
Right now this election is Obama's to loose. In other words McCain's got to find a way to steal voters from Obama. He's got his base, so I think he should have spent more time pandering to the people who haven't made up their minds. Let the rallies be for the base and the debates be to help people make up their minds.
Because of this, I cannot call this a win for McCain (including with his base because he already had them to begin with).
Reality is that all Obama has to do is wake up for the next 2-3 weeks, keep a loose muzzle on Biden, and he wins.
McCain got a lot of the base back with Palin, but he's not holding it. That was the real point of the attacks last night; to show that there's still some fight there. You figure if William Buckley's-that god of conservatism-son is gonna vote for Obama (and has the gall to declare it publically!!!) there's a big problem with the base (know what "the base" translates to in Arabic? A friend reminded me of that, after I said it one too many times).
Micheline
It's funny that I came to the same conclusion. I think McCain's answer to the abortion issue will rile up the base. This will probably make it harder for Obama to win North Carolina and Virgnia. We will see.
NC, yeah, it may hurt him there, but not that much.
VA.....hard to tell. It won't fly in Southwest VA at ALL....but I don't think Obama's really expecting to win there (the resources he has there are small compared to Hampton Roads and Northern VA).
Northern VA may have enjoyed it, and Hampton Roads may not care a whole lot (as the abortion issue doesn't affect a whole lot of military bases).
I think that, at the end of the day, McCain will keep VA. But it won't be because of anything he did to keep it. It will be numbers again.
Town
Unfortunately for McCain, the numbers are on Obama's side:
There are two losing Republican candidates running in VA: Gilmore & McCain.
Gilmore's already a lost cause and McCain's steady decline added to that means people may not get out and vote for either one of them.
NoVa will put Virginia over the top. Obama won't win by 10 points (if he does, game over for McCain), but I believe he will take VA by a slim margin.
Remember, there's only 3 Democratic congressmen (of which, two aren't being challenged). The GOP doesn't stand to lose those seats (though my home representative-Thelma Drake-is catching a lot of hell). People will come out and vote for them, which in turn will drive a few McCain votes.
I think McCain has conceded NOVA. I think Obama has conceded the southwest. The problem is that Obama can write off that part of the state and still win...but McCain has to carry both SW and Hampton Roads to offset losing NOVA.
(by the way, don't watch the local evening news tomorrow. Fair warning.)
Town
1) The people in the rest of the state don't give a damn about Thelma Drake, that's not going to prompt them to run to the polls. Of course there's only going to be 3 Democratic congressmen when you gerrymander all the Democrats into 3 areas. In Bobby Scott's case, they gerrymandered all the black people in VA from Richmond to Newport News into one district.
2) The "blueing" of Virginia has occurred AFTER the last census. The Census is coming up in 14.5 months. Mark Warner, Tim Kaine and Jim Webb all won AFTER 2000.
3) Which means redistricting. Tom Davis knew what time it was when he decided not to run again. I fully expect VA to pick up at least one more Dem. congressman due to redistricting.
4) All Obama has to do is follow the Warner/Kaine/Webb map to success to win Virginia. It doesn't matter if Obama is like Bob McDonnell and wins by 325 votes, he still wins.
5) Democratic enthusiasm in VA is higher than Republican enthusiasm this year. The ONLY way Gilmore will win is if people get out and vote for McCain and he rides on McCain's coattails. But people aren't that hyped on McCain much less Gilmore; they never were. They'll reluctantly go to the polls and vote Republican but they aren't enthused about it. Also, Kerry didn't lose VA by all that much in '04 and neither he nor Bush campaigned in VA. McCain has only been to Va TWICE, while Obama has been at least 12 times.
6) And Obama will be back in VA this week campaigning in Roanoke. (SW Virginia)
7) I'll repeat, if Obama wins VA it will be b/c NoVa put him over the top. Fairfax County alone could cancel out SW Virginia combined.
8) NoVA + black people bum rushing the polls in Richmond & Tidewater + Charlottesville + I-95 / I-64 corridor = Obama.
9) Virginia already knows that a black man in the executive position doesn't mean the state will fall down. Wilder didn't tear down VA when he was in office, Virginia is still standing, the blacks didn't get all uppity and try to put white people into slavery. (Wilder tearing down Richmond is another story).
True on Drake. But she-and the majority of the other GOP representatives are popular enough to drive some McCain votes (and to survive a possible McCain loss).
What do you think Obama's "must win" in VA is?
Hope the 3rd isn't redistricted. Then again, that might be beneficial.....
Here's Maude Hurd, of ACORN, responding to McCain's accusations:
"We appreciate that Senator McCain's effort to stir up the Republican base by attacking a community group that is trying to increase public participation in our democratic processes. However, these attacks reflect an increasingly panicky candidate; unfortunately the Senator McCain we saw tonight is very different than the Senator McCain who stood shoulder to shoulder with ACORN at a February 20, 2006 immigration reform event.
It is clear for us to see that John McCain was for ACORN before he was against ACORN; he was for reform before he was against reform; and he was a maverick before he became erratic. What is really going here is that Senator McCain and his allies are part of a coordinated effort to engage in what appears to be an unprecedented effort to suppress voter turnout."
Good post! I agree that the attacks about ACORN aren't something that can be pinned on Obama without holding McCain to the same standard.
That said, ACORN really EFFed up by hiring ex cons and ex drug addicts to register voters. Howc ould they NOT think that people desperate for money WOULDN'T cut corners? They should have used college interns or something instead. That was an avoidable and costly mistake...
TruthSeeker
I can understand where ACORN's coming from...trying to help people get back on their feet.
Absolutely NOTHING wrong with helping people get back on their feet. I think it is a noble thing. However, what I disagree with is mixing this with the democratic process in this country. Perhaps have them work in the office instead... doing things that don't have a potential effect on people's votes being counted/not counted. Just my opinion though...
TruthSeeker
I don't entirely disagree. They took a huge risk, knowing they were already a target of the GOP. I wonder who else would take those jobs though...
I think of the thousands who filled out forms correctly and were helped with a pay check. Of course, the GOP has other ideas.
Confirmation of Joe’s Identity and Link to Keating 2:15 am Thursday October 16. 2008
Ok, this is the big one. We have confirmation that the last name we were using is in fact correct so I will now reveal the connections since the name has been said on MSNBC and CBS.
Joe the Plumber is Joe Wurzelbacher. There is a Jan Wurzelbacher associated with a Joe and the address with the building I have pictured below. Earlier tonight I called the number associated with that address and the name Wurzelbacher Bros. and the machine message made no mention at all of any business.
Now to the Keating connection. As mentioned in a previous post the name Wurzelbacher is fairly uncommon so it’s not hard to track down potential connections just using geography and ages to make the likely connections. There is a Robert Wurzelbacher who died in 2004 (possibly deceased is more accurate) who is in the same area and is of an appropriate age to be a parent or uncle to Joe who according to reunion.com is 33. This Robert Wurzelbacher not only had a history of campaign contributions to republicans but is implicated in the Keating Five scandal. The full text of the article relating to this is below. There are other Wurzelbacher contributions to McCain and other republicans in other parts of the country. We are looking into those now. With the confirmation of the last name and the limit number of family members this looks very bad. There is also no such plumbing business listed or advertising and the number I called (I only called one so as not to disturb at a home number late at night) makes no effort to tell you that you have reached a business. This is looking very, very much like an act.
They are pulling the sex kitten card for sure. Before it's all over she'll be dancing on a car like Tawny Kiteain (sp?) in a Whitesnake video. She's wearing her hair down a lot more these days. Next the necklines will begin to recede. Mark my words...
Mac Race Down Drain Despite Appeal to Plumber Joe Posted 1 minute ago in Politics
(Newser) – John McCain turned in his best debate performance last night but couldn't turn it into the game-changer he needed, Sam Youngman writes in The Hill. McCain was fiercer this time, but he failed to score a direct hit on his unflappable opponent and didn't come up with any new arguments for himself—or against Barack Obama, Youngman notes.
Bringing up "Joe the Plumber" was the Republican's best move, but it likely won't change the course of the race. "McCain needed a decisive win," Youngman concludes. "Instead, he might have just cemented the status quo, leaving Obama with little more to do than run out the clock and turn out his voters."
