Obama Stirs Up Supporters In Colorado

Barack Obama is jumping on John McCain’s statement that he shares a “common philosophy” with President Bush as evidence that his Republican rival is out of touch.

Speaking to an enormous crowd that filled a Denver park, Obama said McCain finally gave us a little “straight talk.” He was referring to McCain’s comment during a televised interview Sunday that “of course” he and Bush share the philosophy of the Republican Party.

The Democratic presidential contender said that philosophy amounts to giving more to millionaires and billionaires in hope that it trickles down.

Obama and McCain are competing intensely for Colorado’s nine electoral votes. The toss-up state could seal the fate of the election if the race is close.

Here's a voting story from Arizona that I want to share with JJP readers:

I work in the public library and was at work today. There's this program/site where kids can "vote" online. Mostly they're doing it through school but we have some of the ID cards and stickers etc to hand out too. Today, a little boy -- one of those very blond white children -- who comes in often with his neighbor asked us about it. I went with him to the computer to help him get to the site. He's in third grade.

His neighbor, an older white very friendly perenially sunburned guy, came over with us. I mentioned that kids can of course only vote once and the neigbor started talking about "Chicago politics" and how it's "vote early, often and for Daley." I tried to be noncommittal.

I helped the little boy with the login process and how to get to the voting site. He turned to his neighbor and said he wanted privacy to vote, so I assumed that I would just show him how the site works and back off. But when I was showing the little boy what to do, he got all involved and just went ahead in front of us. There were three things for the kids to vote on -- the presidential race, the congressional race for the house, and a local initiative about salaries for state legislators.

The presidential race was first. I told him to scroll down so he could see all the choices (there are a lot of choices!), and he did. Immediately upon seeing the pictures of McCain and Palin, he hovered his mouse cursor over their pictures and said "NO!" Then he scrolled up and hovered over the Obama/Biden pictures and said "YES!" I showed him how to click to cast the vote.

After he had filled out all three votes (he chose the Democrat for congress, by the way, pretty confidently) I showed him how it says to "check your ballot" before clicking submit. I said, "Okay, now make sure you've picked what you really want to pick in the form." So he scrolled back up. On seeing the McCain/Palin pictures again, he put his mouse cursor over them and said "BAD!" then skipped up through the others murmuring quietly "no" and "bad" until he got to the Obama/Biden pics, and said "GOOD!" as he hovered the cursor over their pictures and looked to see that he had filled out that bubble.

So then he submitted his online votes and I told him that he could go back to the website after 7pm on Nov 4 to see how all the kids had voted. I said that this is of course not the same as the actual election results but I assumed he would be hearing about those also.

He turned to me, looked me right in the eye and said, with great confidence: "Obama's gonna win!!"

I left him as he was putting the little "I voted" sticker on his shirt, big smile on my face.

Obama is that leader. As Gen. Colin Powell said last week, Obama is the president America needs now "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities. ... He has both style and substance."

I need to catch up on work and spend time with my daughter, but I am working myself to exhaustion because this is such a critical moment in American history. Those of us with voice, expertise, and opportunity have an obligation to be part of framing, critiquing, and understanding what it means to American history and politics to find ourselves on the precipice of electing the first African American president. This is a serious moment.

Which explains why I was so pissed when I opened my NYTimes on the plane and discovered the front page story in The Arts section. "For Once, CNN Take News Less Seriously." The story went on to detail that D.L. Hughley, one of the Kings of Comedy, is debuting his own political comedy show on CNN this week. I don't have words to express my irritation with this development. CNN has been nearly lily white. Black commentators, guests, and hosts have been the rare exception rather than the rule. This is a network that responded to Hurricane Katrina, the most visible class and race disaster of our age, by promoting the blond, blue-eyed, Vanderbilt heir Anderson Cooper to a two-hour nightly show. They have now decided that the appropriate response to a likely Obama administration is to have a black comedian host a farcical news show. Hmmm.

In the interest of full disclosure let me say that I was invited to be a part of the initial episode of this show. I turned down the producer telling her that I was disturbed that the network seemed to think that comedy is the appropriate response to burgeoning black political equality. Let me also say that I have agreed to appear on CNN during election coverage next week, though I suspect after this blog I might get a cancellation call.

Don't get me wrong. I like political comedy. The Daily Show and Colbert Report helped me to endure the brutality of the Bush administration and Tina Fey is the only thing that allows me to endure Sarah Palin. My friend Elon James White has innovated a whole new style of Obama-perfect comedy: preppy, hip-hop, coo,l funny, full of insight, wit, and "proper prounciation." I am always sure to get my dose of Elon's "This Week in Blackness" But, this CNN deal is different. Yes, it is ridiculous that SNL is still playing Michelle and Barack in black face rather than finding actual black people to portray them. Yes, Comedy Central's new "Chocolate News" is embarrassingly bad. But this CNN-Hughley gig has the hairs standing up on the back of my neck.

SNL and Comedy Central are satirical, comedic spaces. Black people act like fools on those shows, but so do white folks. They are foolish by design.

But CNN is purportedly the most respected source for news. We are sliding into an economic recession rivaling the Great Depression. We are fighting wars on multiple fronts. Trust in our political system is at an all time low. This is not really a funny moment. In today's NYTimes, recent Nobel winner Paul Krugman even opined that American support for Barack Obama represented our nation "desperately seeking seriousness." So why does CNN think that black people have to serve as the court jesters just as we are moving into the White House?

It feels to me like the reassertion of racist notions of black people and our proper place in the world. Sometimes popular culture and media operate as forces of regressive and reactionary sentiments even as the political system is changing. It happened during the feminist movement. As white women were gaining control over their fertility, asserting their independence, and moving into the workforce, popular culture developed a new feminine aesthetic saying that women must be rail thin in order to be beautiful and desirable. Whew! Don't worry about women competing for power if they are so worried about the size of their thighs that they starve themselves and stay at the gym all day.

Same deal here. No worries about black people as serious contenders for political leadership on the world stage if we can be safely constrained to our stereotypical role as the comedic relief.

I am sick of us not being serious, not taking ourselves seriously, and not demanding that we be taken seriously by others. And this is not just a problem of mass media. Harvard University will be celebrating the scholarship and legacy of W.E.B. DuBois with the delivery of three public lectures by Michael Eric Dyson. These lectures are to be delivered November 5,6, and 7, while we are still processing the outcome and meaning of this election; an election where we either elect or fail to elect the first black president. And the subject of these three lectures is Jay-Z. It is enough to make me want to sign-up with that other black comedian Bill Cosby just long enough to say, "come on people!"

CNN will mark the Obama moment with a D.L. Hughley show and Harvard University will mark the Obama moment with a series of public lectures on Jay-Z. It seems I have once again entered bizarro world.

In this article Hughley laughs about his new role as political spokesman by saying, "Come on man. I barely even know how to read. I've got a G.E.D." Later in the article he says, "I am CNN's Barack Obama."

No, brother Hughley. Barack Obama was the editor of Harvard Law Review, he taught at the University of Chicago, he is one of only a handful of African Americans ever elected to the US Senate, he in an expansive intellectual with a broad vision for his nation who has built the most impressive political coalition of the last 50 years. You are not CNN's Obama, you are CNN's Sarah Palin.

This is how I see it . . .

When Obama gets that 270th electoral vote next Tuesday night, I don't want to see any of the usual suspects. No D.L. No Dyson. No West. None of that. I respect their opinions and I'm sure I'll hear them soon enough.

I don't need any commentary or analysis. . . .

I just want someone to take a camera, go to the street and interview as many black people as possible. Old, young, male, female, gay, straight, of all religions and walks of life. I WANT TO SHARE THIS EXPERIENCE WITH MY PEOPLE.

I DON'T WANT TO STUDY IT.

I DON'T WANT TO DEBATE IT.

I DON't want to theorize about the social/political/philosophical ramifications of the first black president. That time will come.

But I just want to ENJOY the moment. I don't want to hear about someone's book or thesis. . . I just want to ENJOY the moment.

I want to see my people enjoy this moment. . . as a people. . . no drama. . . just a recognition of the fact that we were fortunate enough to witness history.

That's what I'm looking forward to.

I watched his DNC acceptance speech at B. Smith's restaurant, so I may start there and then walk the 4 or 5 blocks to Times Square. Times Square is good because it is 99% tourist, so I can at least get a good sample of America as a whole.

I want to see us enjoy this moment too. We deserve to sit back for a minute and just enjoy it. No drama.

I would love to see something like that. Imagine a compilation of reactions from across the country!

I'm going to spread that idea around. We can't depend on the MSM to get it right. I would love to see videos from people all over the country.

Whatever happened to Martin's show a couple months back? Does anyone remember that? It involved Black issues and he would bring on guests to debate the particular topic. I watched two shows and it was pretty good---but I wasn't sure if it was a regular thing or because it was Black history month or something...

Yeah, God forbid they give a credible Black commentator his own show who actually might have a greater understanding of issues that are important to communities of color. Instead we get to "laugh" with D.L. Hughley. Thanks CNN.

As I mentioned to B-Serious further down, I can see a show with Roland teaming with a black conservative like Amy Holmes, or now that I'm thinking about it - Michelle Bernard. It would be a start in showing the diversity of views black people have.

Then again, that would be too much like right!

amen! dr. harris-lacewell is ON TIME and ON PURPOSE once again! love this woman tremendously! i have sent CNN a rant regarding this hughley bullshit as well. haven't seen the show, but the timing and intent are suspect and outrageously offensive. i urge others to do the same.

Didn't Dave Chapelle quit his show because he began to feel that white people were laughing AT him and not WITH him? And here we have good ole D.L. on CNN. As Dr. Harris-Lacewell said, This is not really a funny moment with wars and recession.

Personally, I hope that "Chocolate News" gets better. I like David Alan Grier and what he is trying to do.

You made a great point. Laughing AT or laughing WITH. For me, that's the tight-rope a lot of black comedians seem to face.

I agree with most of what Dr. Harris-Lacewell had to say. I just wonder whether some of her anger is misplaced when she talks about D.L. Hughley. Personally, I think it says much more about the mindset of CNN that they would pick this type of format.

As a practical matter, I'd say that D.L.'s type of humor is inappropriate for a station like CNN. Now, if it were Showtime, Comedy Central or HBO I'd have no concerns. But no other news organization tries to mix a comedy show in with their programming. In a way, I get the sinking feeling that CNN is almost setting D.L. up to fail.

To be honest, I can't hate D.L. . . . the opportunity came and he took it. I just feel a little uneasy for him because his show is going to stick out like a sore thumb. His humor doesn't fit the climate. And his jokes will be broadcast for a predominately white audience that might not be familiar with or have an appreciation for his style of black humor.

I actually think that's the problem D.L. ran into with his "nappy-headed" joke on the Jay Leno Show. I've heard far worse from black comedians (male and female). It's just that (1) it might have been to soon to go there; and (2) he tested the joke on the wrong show, in front of the wrong audience. Therefore, I think some people looked at it and figured that the audience was laughing AT "us" (the Rutgers team), but not with the "us".

I must say, I'm not one to boycott D.L and I've written about stuff like this before. So, in that respect, I don't see D.L. as a threat. But I can certainly appreciate where Dr. Harris-Lacewell is coming from.

However, I do think that D.L. is smart enough to carry a show much like Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect or Real Time. I just don't think CNN is the place to do it.

Absolutely on point. I agree with each and every point you made. Although, I hope that if the show continues that D.L. (whom I've never been entertained by), will mature and adapt his comedy to a level that we can all live with.

His latest comedy special that aired on HBO - which was his last tour as well. He should stick to politics and social commentary. He crossed the line into Black woman bashing and really showed his unresolved "issues". I can't have sympathy for a man w/ enough money for therapy who won't go.

I don't think her anger is misplaced when she talks about D.L. Hughley. I think it says just as much about Hughley's mindset as it does CNN. As you stated, his humor does not fit the climate of the times. Also, CNN is not Comedy Central or SNL.

As far as his agreement with Don Imus that the Rutgers women were indeed "ugly" and "nappy headed" - I would be just as pissed if he said that on BET or The Tom Joyner Show or something. Saying it in the mainstream "in front of everybody" made it worse. I think he showed a real contempt for black women with those remarks and his subsequent refusal to apologize.

I'm with Rikyrah, I would much rather have Roland Martin have a show on CNN. Heck, give Roland and Amy Holmes a show so they can (responsibly) put a black face on being liberal/conservative and have guests on that reflect the diversity of our views. They can leave the comedy to Comedy Central and SNL.

I'll put it this way . . . I don't think D.L. has (or should feel to have) an obligation to turn the opportunity down.

That's all I can go on. I don't know D.L.'s intentions. His focus is comedy. CNN called with a prime-time opportunity to showcase his "talent." For me, the question is: what does he plan to do with the show?

I don't know how much control D.L. has over the content and direction of his show. I don't know what he's got planned. Like I said, I have to watch it first.

Remember, Dave Chappelle left when he started to feel like he was losing control over the direction of his show. They wanted him to do things he was uncomfortable with . . . so he left.

Bottom line . . . I wouldn't boycott D.L. just because I thought his humor was inappropriate for CNN. That sounds too much like censorship to me.

Now . . . if warranted, would I try to convince everyone I know to avoid his show like the plague? That's a different question. Would I encourage someone like Dr. Harris-Lacewell to confront D.L. on his own show? That might be even better.

The former (boycott) is based on censorship. . . the latter (confrontation) is based on persuasion. I prefer the latter.

As for D.L.'s "nappy-headed" joke, I've heard far worse from other comics. In fact, I've heard far worse from "Chocolate News" already.

I respect the fact that you and others would take offense to that joke regardless of the venue. Still, I've seen him perform that same joke in unmixed company to an approving audience. For better or worse, venue matters to a lot of people.

I agree . . . Roland would have been a much better choice. But it's not surprising to see CNN pass up on such talent.

I am not on a formal "boycott" of D.L. and I don't want to see him or anyone else be censored. However, I have no intention of supporting the career of any person with such blatant, unapologetic disregard for black women. It is not funny to me whether the venue is Leno or "unmixed company."

Also, D.L. is different from these wack, nameless BET comedians because everyone knows him. I can't imagine black men being very forgiving if a black female comedian insulted black men on Jay Leno's show the way D.L. did.

As far as CNN - who are we kidding? No way he has any control over the show.

As for "Chocolate News," I haven't seen it yet but so far many people I respect hate the show already. I'm going to find it and watch it but I have to say, I hate to see such a platform wasted.

Fair enough. I think that's the best route. D.L. has the right to accept his own show. We have the right to turn the channel. The ratings will determine whether he sinks or swims.

As to your second point, I think reasonable people can disagree on whether D.L. has a disregard for black women. I can see one making the argument that he has an unapologetic disregard for the Rutgers women's basketball team. But I don't know whether that sentiment extends to all black women. I'd need more than his inappropriate joke to make that judgment.

To me, that judgment assumes D.L. actually considered the social ramifications his joke would have on other black women. It further assumes that most, if not all, black women were offended by his joke.

As to your other point, unfortunately black men and women insult each other all the time in the public eye. We've mastered it like sport. Sadly, it's nothing new and it never seems to grow old. Indeed, one of the reasons I like JJP is because this is one of the few places black men and women can come together in appreciation for each other. . . not in competition against one another.

But D.L. is symptomatic of a larger problem between black men and women . . . a problem that, at times, plays itself out through various forms of popular culture.

We all know how black comedians, in particular, consistently showcase routines wherein they joke about how sistas ain't right and brothas ain't sh*t.

We write songs about it. We make movies about it. All of that takes place in the public eye. All of it, to one degree or another, perpetuates various stereotypes about black men and women. We criticize the supply but never fully examine the demand. We keep buying the cds. . . purchasing the tickets, etc. This begs the question: WHY???

I think we must begin to ask ourselves what it is that we truly want. Do we want a strict code of cultural ethics or do we simply want the freedom to be ourselves without fear of having to represent the entire race at the same time?

Sometimes a joke (however in bad taste) is still just a joke. That is, unless a joke about one or a group of black people automatically morphs into a joke about all black people.

That doesn't make it right, but it does beg to question whether we can separate a person's on-stage persona from his or her true self. And, to the extent that we can, how far do we accept that some things are just meant for pure entertainment? And, in the case of D.L., what responsibility do we have to each other as black men and women to acknowledge such protests when they are made?

Whatever the case, I think we both can agree that this issue goes way deeper than D.L. And, to the extent that there's a failure to communicate deeply held cultural/historical wounds . . . well, perhaps that's the true discussion that still needs to take place in the black community.

Because it seems clear to me that black people, like any other race/culture, should be afforded the luxury to partake in buffoonery without assuming the identity of buffoons. . . an identity that more aptly reflects how others view us, but not necessarily how we view ourselves. This should also extend to other aspects of human nature (most notably, sexuality and anger).

We could run through an entire list of black entertainers and never completely agree on which ones cross the line and which ones do not. And that's not necessarily a male/female thing. It's really a matter of personal tastes and the thresholds each of us have when it comes to pushing the envelope.

As an entertainer, D.L.'s joke was in poor taste, perhaps even reckless. But, as a man, I honestly can't say whether D.L. is a misogynist or a devoted husband and father who's joke just went too far. For all I know, he might be both at the same time. . . he might be neither.

I honestly don't know enough about D.L.'s personal life and worldview to feel comfortable labeling him one way or the other.

But, of course, that's just my opinion. I respect your viewpoint as well.

I guess we'll find out if he or Wayans get a young man on their doorsteps, calling to take their daughters out on dates, and saying, "I'd like to take out your daughter; you know, the "nappy-headed ho" and see how they like having their own daughters referred to as such.

Hughley and Wayans have daughters, B-Serious. How easily their joke can turn when it's directed at their children and see how fast they'll try to "go off". Trying to defend Don Imus with the lamest of "freedom of speech" defenses takes them out of defending their own daughters' womenhood.

Well, if entertainers used their children as barometers for what is and is not appropriate they'd have a very boring shows.

I'm sure there are a lot of things comedians say that they'd never want their children to hear or endure.

If that were the case, comedians would never talk about sex, drugs, relationships . . . they try their best to separate their public persona from their private life - a luxury that we afford white entertainers all the time.

As for freedom of speech. I agree, many "freedom of speech" arguments are lame. But this country has purposefully set a very low bar for protected speech because it values (at least, in theory) freedom of expression over freedom from offense (even if we all know that this works much better in theory than practice for black folk).

You mentioned In Living Color in a post below. What makes that humor ok, but D.L.'s humor inappropriate?

Time and venue. People cringe at the thought of D.L. acting a fool on CNN, despite the fact that we might laugh along if some of those same jokes were told at a taping of the Kings of Comedy. We especially cringe when such buffoonery encroaches upon perhaps the most serious political moment in black history (I think that this was the main intention behind Dr. Harris-Lacewell's article . . . she didn't mention the "nappy-headed" joke).

In Living Color had a skit for almost every type of black stereotype. In fact, I know a whole lot of black men and women that laughed their as*es off everytime Jamie Foxx played Wanda.

For me, it's a matter of consistency. We assume to function by a set of unspoken rules of cultural ethics. Yet we have no problem making exceptions when we feel appropriate. And there are times when our words don't match our actions. So when we highlight one incident for rebuke, we run the risk of establishing a zero-tolerance code of ethics that most black folk are unable (and justifiably) unwilling to accept when it comes to black popular culture.

People are angry at D.L.'s "nappy-head" joke, but if Don Imus were to draw a sketch of his "nappy-headed ho" he'd probably draw a picture that fit the stereotype portrayed by such characters as Foxx' Wanda and/or Martin Lawrence's Shenene.

That's why it was so easy for Imus to flip the script back on the black community and divert attention away from himself and back on to black pathologies.

I'd say an overwhelming majority of black audiences laughed at those skits on In Living Color. And if it weren't for the fact that we constantly act in anticipation of white reaction, I believe most black men and women were happy enough to just laugh and have a good time . . . knowing that Wanda is a caricature and in no way representative of all black women . . . just as Damon Waynes' Wino was not representative of black men (even if we all might know one or two Wandas and Winos from our neighborhoods. LOL).

So what's changed since then?

The times and venue have changed. I don't think people were mad at D.L.'s joke so much as they were mad at the fact that his joke was used in defense of Don Imus.

If Don Imus never happened, I could easily see that joke having little to no controversy as D.L. and many other black male and female comics like to play the dozens at their shows (which is why smart people never sit in the front row).

But D.L.'s joke didn't take place inside a vacuum. It happened on the heels of a major controversy when the wound was still relatively fresh. Even more, it happened in front of a white audience on national television. I think that's why D.L. got so much backlash.

Just as he's getting a lot of backlash now for telling (what I assume to be) HBO-level black comedy on CNN. Not the right time. Not the right venue.

B-Serious, you make some good points, but comedian Eddie Griffin also referred to those sistas at Rutgers, and he said this in his joke:

"First of all, I'd make that SOB pay the tuition of everyone of those sistas at Rutgers; then for every time he referred to them as 'nappy-headed hos', his advertisers would have to cut checks to the United Negro Educational College Fund. Then, I'd walk into his office and ask him (Imus), "who's the nappy-headed ho, now, BITCH? Go ahead and say 'Nigga' so I can get my check..."

I totally agree with you regarding the venue. There's a time and place for everything, including the humor on "In Living Color", but just like Dave Chappelle took off when he felt that his show was turning into buffoonery, so did Keenan Ivory Wayans when the network started pushing him towards more buffoonery in the skits as well. DL pays just enough attention to events to make jokes about it - not to see the significance of the event itself. That's also pissing off people like Dr. Harris-Lacewell, as well as me, and everyone else raising objections on the board.

Ironically, HBO was running one of DL's shows "Going Home" and he was funny as hell. Personally, he's lost his touch - he knows it, and needs the venues like the one CNN is giving him to hide behind the fact his joke pool has dried up and I don't understand, because Bush provides enough fodder for jokes for the next 10 years if a comedian does it right.

Sorry, Anovelista, but both Hughley and Grier are 21st Century Coons. Ever since D. L. and Damon Wayans tried to defend Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers University Women's Basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" under the guise of "freedom of speech" I have lost respect for both of them and any other Black comedian going this route just to collect a paycheck.

Dave Chappelle set the standard - he forfeited a $50 million dollar pay out from Comedy Central when whites started laughing at him and not with him. His self-respect was worth far more than taking the payout from Comedy Central.

Wayans, Hughley and Grier can't get the paying gigs they used to pull back in the 90s when they were THEMSELVES. And if they can't get those gigs on television, maybe they need to hit the road with their comedy, although I caught Hughley's show here in DC last year and it's clear he hasn't come up with any more new material since 1999, so he's grasping for anything that will keep his wife and children in the lifestyles to which they have become accustomed.

I agree with Melissa - this is NOT a time for D. L. Hughley to get on national television with his COON act.

I blogged on the whole Don Imus debacle - and I live in New Jersey - so trust me, I hear you on D. L. and his "nappy headed ho" comments. That is the main reason I do not like him.

However, I disagree about David Alan Grier. Maybe I missed it, but I have never seen him acting like a "coon". If "Chocolate News" had good writers (BLACK writers - it is called "Chocolate News") ala "The Daily Show" it could be really good.

The last time I thought David Alan Grier was even CLOSE to funny was during his days on "In Living Color". Since those days, he just smacks of "coon-dom", even if he hangs around the likes of the brilliance of Paul Mooney.

CNN likes to portray itself as the only cable outlet that is truly neutral. I almost prefer Fox. At least you know where they are coming from. First, let me say that I agree with the other commenters about the D.L. Hughley show. I may have missed it when he has ever been funny, but to each his own. Also, I thought it was extremely low class for him to pick up the "napped headed hoe" banner where Imus left off. Yes, there is freedom of speech, but there is also a thing called common decency and those young women did not deserve to be talked about like that by anyone--he should have known better, but clearly he doesn't. And the worse thing about it is that it seemed like he, (and Wayans for that matter) said it to generate controversy and get their names in the paper--hoping that they could get some free publicity. The whole thing turned my stomach...you couldn't pay me to watch his shown.

Also, we are on the same page with SNL. I was just telling my friend that it would be to like right for them to get a Black female comedian that is a) funny and b) looks like Michelle, and I specifically mentioned Aisha Taylor. She is funny, smart, and looks a lot more like Michelle. Heck, they should try to bring her own as a regular to mix things up.

Its a HUGE drive. I just drove thru Georgia Tech's campus today ....and that appears to be Obama-Biden central if the number of signs in windows and bumper stickers on cars is any indication. My son has Autism and I appreciate Obama's sincere addressing of the issue for family's with special needs children. My school district told us we would not be allowed to miss work due to voting-code for "we'll dock your pay." I imagine that some will be taking that day off. I started to, but have to take another day off for personal reasons close to this date. I wish I had the courage. They threaten our jobs a lot at my school.

I am going to try to go in at 6/7am to vote just because I know once I leave work the traffic won't get me home in time. I can sacrifice my beauty sleep for one day :)

Teacher - do what you have to but I know you will find a way to vote (i.e. late afternoon or absentee ballot).

I'm not sure what state you work in but in CA workers are given up to 2 hours off to vote. Or maybe it is just me company. hopefully you can vote after work if you don't take the day off.

Teacher: STAY STRONG! SAFE-GUARD YOUR JOB!! I'm sure that Mr. Obama would say the same.

The Peach State Gets Peachier - GA and NC Update 10/24

GA continues its march to Obama. I am amazed and hear stories every day of people and the wait to vote.

Total - 867,210 (+75,000)

African American/Latino/Asian - 362K

% - 37.5% - Target is 30%+ to win the election - We gained +1% from the last 2 week average in one day so the trendline is going the right way. That is the barometer I watch the most.


We are now at 29.2% of the 2004 vote when 20.2% voted early.


We start canvassing our 11 precincts tomorrow and 8000 voters tomorrow !!!

NC


Total - 926,155 (+150,000)

% - 31.2% - Target is 20%+ to win the election

26.1% of the 2004 vote has been reached already when 30.8% voted early!!

This is a HUGE 150,000 vote day and our magic number is holding steady.


NOTE - One important thing to realize is that unlike NC where there are 400 Obama staffers we have 40 maybe in the field so their GOTV efforts so far are outperforming GA as a % of the non white population and in total numbers.

NC is running roughly at 32.6% with 22% of the electorate being non white.
GA is running at 37.6% with roughly 30% being non white.
They are thus overperforming us by 25% which tells me we have lots of votes to harvest still and can get that type of over the top turnout as well by 11/4.
GA goes to expanded early vote next week with more local spots to vote and extended hours all week and that is where our efforts are focused. Motivation is a non issue. We are answering a lot of questions like where and when to vote, arranging rides etc....

All I know is that McCain's band of merry incompetents can look at these numbers and know that if they keep up they are in even bigger trouble than they know already.
