The Bryan Eagle in Bryan/College Station, TX has followed the lead of fellow Texas papers like the Houston Chronicle and Austin American-Statesman in endorsing Barack Obama for President. It's not a huge paper but it's the hometown paper of Bryan/College Station, best known as the home of Texas A&M University (also the home of the George Bush Presidential Library).

GOP busted for Voter Registration Fraud

As usual the Republicans scream bloody murder about something they ae usually doing behind closed doors. They launch accusations against ACORN while doing the thing they acccuse ACORN of doing.

Mark Jacoby, who was arrested in Ontario and owns a firm hired by the California Republican Party, violated state registration laws, authorities say.

SACRAMENTO -- The owner of a firm that the California Republican Party hired to register tens of thousands of voters this year was arrested in Ontario late last night on suspicion of voter registration fraud.

State and local investigators allege that Mark Jacoby fraudulently registered himself to vote at a childhood California address where he no longer lives so he would appear to meet the legal requirement that signature gatherers be eligible to vote in California.

Jacoby's arrest by state investigators and the Ontario Police Department comes after dozens of voters said they were duped into registering as Republicans by his firm, Young Political Majors, or YPM. The voters said YPM tricked them by saying they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters. The firm was paid $7 to $12 for every Californian it registered as a member of the GOP.

Several agencies had launched investigations into Jacoby's activities, including the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, which issued the warrant for his arrest earlier this month on felony charges of voter registration fraud and perjury.

I don't really understand, maybe you can help. What benefit does the GOP have for people being REGISTERED as a Republican?

In California it only matter in primary elections. I worked in a polling place last election and I had several people who were registered as Republicans who wanted to vote for Obama but could not because they were registered Republican. In primaries the Republican Party only limits people to vote for Republicans. In the big general election it does not matter, but in the primary it does.

In fact due to what happened last election several people I saw pick up registration to become Independents because of this.

This sounds like voter suppression to me! I am a registered (I) and will change to a (D) when the next primary comes around if I still reside in my state.

I saw that crap. I just chuckled to myself and kept on flipping!

Friend and I did another two big canvasses out in Antrim, NH yesterday. Getting some great responses out there. The campaign mostly targets undecideds and waverers, so the fact that we were meeting up with positive people was a very good sign. One 60-something woman was a Hillary supporter holding her nose for Obama, mostly because she still feels the Party machinery was conspiring against Hillary (she needs a little bit of a reality check on who the party machinery are), but the point is she's voting for Obama and that's all that matters. The truly senior citizens I spoke with at a retirement community had no such qualms.

It was fun! I'm probably not going back until Halloween and hope NH will keep holding the line. Voters up there sure like to think of themselves as independent but I hope they'll see what the right thing to do is.

I was very happy that Powell mentioned this young soldier. I hate the fact that being an Arab or Muslim has become an accepted smear or disqualifier for all things American.

Joe Biden is speaking in Tacoma today. That's about a half hour drive from where I live. I wish I could go see the speech. Oh well, maybe they'll have it on Obama live.

I usually don't comment on sites I read but I see an open thread and I need to rant for a bit to let out my frustration. This is probably going to end up longer than it should be.

Woke up to see Colin Powell endorsed Sen Obama which slightly surprised me, in a good way. It was the way he spoke as a more grounded citizen, I assumed after the career he had and the political positions he would have been further detached from the perspectives he spoke from. It really had more to do with his military career, than party lines.

Then I started reading the comments on Politico and everything just changed to frustration. The two main points being the arguments that "he is voting for the black man, what a surprise" and "how can he say Sen Obama is qualified and Gov Palin isn't when she has more elected experience" Knowing it was pointless to argue the points there I just moved on to some of the other daily reads just to see it mirrored.

First it just seems beyond stupid to think a black person will just automatically vote for another black man. To actually justify it would require proof that in every other presidential election, every other race other than white stayed home waiting for the day they could finally vote along racial lines.

I will be honest when I say that I felt as a 30 year old white male there is an apprehension to talk about racism, it feels like I am not qualified on the subject, that it is such a complex thing I should just take solace that it appears that it is slowly going away. Then the 2008 elections happened.

After years of stupid policies pushed by selfish motives we get a presidential candidate that only speaks of "we" and "us". Sen Obama just seemed so sincere and natural, having known of him and his life from when I first saw him at the 2004 DNC. It really seemed so American to me. Just like in the past when things get so fucked up it looks like it's all going to hell someone or something happens just in time to save us.

It was back when Clinton was being called the presumptive winner and that was when I started pointing out to people just listen to her. Listen to how it is all about her, people around me agreed but would say things like "you're right and it's a shame that I don't think enough people will vote for Obama, I hate to say it but Americans just aren't ready for a black president" In which I would reply what makes you an authority on what every American thinks.

So there it happened, racism was not affecting me. I won't pretend to understand things from perspectives I know little to nothing about. I can't look at a person of another race and say some lame cliche like "I feel you're pain" or "I can understand what it is like" but I damn sure can look at it from the perspectives we do share, as Americans, and as people.

This is the first time in my life since being old enough to vote I am actually excited and proud of one of the candidates for president. In my first election my thoughts were things are going good, Clinton seems pretty cool and my family always votes democrat. Done vote cast. That carried over to Gore, except I thought he was more intelligent so I actually felt a little more pride in my vote. Kerry was just anyone but Bush. I didn't think he was a bad guy, but I didn't feel any admiration for him. Funny that both Gore and Kerry seem like much better people after their failed attempts at presidency, but that is besides the point. Right now I truly have faith in Barack, enough that I give up going to movies to send his campaign the money instead. Nothing I would have done in any past election.

If racism is a deciding factor in this election then in my opinion it has hurt and affected every American (making under a quarter million a year) and that alone is reason enough for me to get over my fear of confronting it.

Maybe everyone was born equal but I really can't feel everyone is equal, and it doesnt have a thing to do with skin color, eating habits or any other stupid thing people use to separate us into groups. What makes people worth being taken seriously is being able to justify what they say or do. I know we have the "freedom" to think, say and pray whatever we want but if you can't string together any logic behind it, even if I don't agree I wouldn't consider that equal.

Stupid shit like "he seems like someone I could have a beer with" or "I wouldn't vote for a Muslim" is just so degrading to rational thought. Would these same people apply those values to a surgeon. I can't see any of these people being wheeled into a hospital after a car accident and considering any of that a priority when the doctor walks in.

Why is it easy to accept kids dressed up like "goths" in a mall and figure they will grow out of it, yet black kids dressed as "thugs" aren't going to grow up as well. Kids are kids, they say and act weird but I would say most of them grow out of it.

I have set high expectations for Obama and I have confidence in him. He could let me down but it won't be because he is black, which brings me to my next rant....

What do people think a president does? Do they think we elect a genius that knows everything about all the decisions he is faced with. Like the old guy from the matrix? I mean really the only qualification is making judgment calls, and being able to see a future further ahead than the next election. If they applied these rules across the board to every elected seat we would have an empty congress. How can any first term senator be qualified to be a senator? How can a person who has never been governor of a state be expected to have the experience to run the state.

If these people just looked in front of them they would have their answer. Who was able to go from virtually unknown to beating one of the most well known politicians in the primaries. Who is able to raise tons of money during a time when America is getting hit up on all sides. That's the kind of things that instill confidence in me. It is actually tangible. I watched it happened and then could reflect back on it. I can't so shit with this imaginary what if experience. McCain's answer for everything is "trust me my friends, I know how to fix the economy" "Trust me I know how to get Bin Laden".. if this is true does that means he is blackmailing us to elect him or he will never tell us how?

I really wish I was allowed to freedom to say these things while phone banking but they are pretty strict when it comes to what I say to the people on the call lists, and after seeing what the campaign is accomplishing I am not going to pretend I know better than them.

So anyway I feel better now. Its not often I get to bitch and rant to a group of people I don't know :) It is quite cathartic.

You are welcome to vent, here, V. We usually manage to go further on insights here than Politico. Some of them are progressive when it suits their own personal agendas, but when those agendas need to be inclusive of everyone, they don't want to know other opinions.

And they refuse to believe that African-Americans are not a monolithic group; that our opinions can be as divergent as theirs are. My father used to always say he'd rather face a rattlesnake (open bigot) versus a water moccasin (closet bigot), because the rattler lets you know he's going to revert to his nature (striking and biting). The water moccasin will sneak up on you like he's harmless and THEN he strikes, and it's too late because you didn't see it coming.

Colin Powell did two important things with his MTP endorsement:

1. He did the Obama campaign's job for them when he made the strongest statement ever about the "he's a Muslim" smear. Powell told them to go look that soldier's name on the wall -- "his name was Kareem Ushad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11. And he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life."

2. Powell played role model and speech therapist for Black Republicans. For those who can't spit it out themselves, Powell gave them the right kind of words to say: "...over the last 7 weeks the approach of the Republican Party and Mr. McCain has become narrower and narrower."

Number (1) brought tears to my eyes.

Colin Powell believes Barack Obama is more ready to lead than John McCain.

On MTP Joe Scarryborough just told Tom B that Colin's endorsement of Barack is a "bad "distraction for McCain.

But he will spin it differently tomorrow morning on "Morning Joke".

Sort of like the distraction that Lori Klausutis was. Lori Klausutis was the 28-year-old office worker for Scarborough who was found dead in his office when he was a Congressman. This was a distraction that kept him from running for re-election. So we should care less what Joe Scarborough thinks or says.

Yeah I mean ... while Gary Condit was dragged through the mud and low and behold ... cleared of any wrong doing in the case of Chandra Levy ... Joe had a dead woman laid out in his office with her skull cracked twice and no one is allowed to say a damn thing in the MSM. I mean it is literally a total black out.

Why try to undercut his thoughtful analysis by bringing this up?

Brokaw is part of that older generation that really needs to sit down and watch from the sidelines. The one thing this whole process has shown is that older white Americans still have major issues with people of color and black men in particular, pitiful. But, then again considering how he ignored the contributions of blacks in his book "The Greatest Generation," or whatever it was called, its not really a surprise that he would eqaute race into the mix.

I was so disappointed in the Dallas Morning News also. I could not believe the drivel they wrote in the op-ed piece.

I wrote them a letter and cancelled my subscription which was only based on the fact that they were the only game in town besides the Observer.

Believe me they need that subscription money but continue to back a candidate who has disgraced himself and this country with his campaign tactics.

But what was most important about Powell's endorsement is that he called the Ayers stuff demagoguery, he criticized the GOP for narrowing the party and moving too far to the right, and he smacked the country around on its hate for Muslims, citing a young Muslim soldier killed in Iraq who was 14 on 9/11 and vowed to go fight for his country and gave his life.

I was impressed more by that than by the endorsement.

Barack can take half of what Powell said and put it in ads from now till the election.

I lalso like how he said Palin was not ready to lead.

A lot of people have been saying that lately....every newspaper endorsement I've read cite that as a major reason to distrust McCain's judgment.

I went over to Fox News Sunday. They spent about 1 minute talking about it. Of course, they tried to minimize it's importance. Brit Hume went through a tortured political dodge until he couldn't help but force himself to say that it would impact the election (good for Independent voters, etc.).

Fox honestly tried to make "Joe the Plumber" a bigger deal than Colin Powell and 150 million dollars. So sad. You could tell that their heart wasn't in it.

First off...yes, it is half-hearted. I'm not happy about it in the least. I didn't decide to proclaim the gospel of Obama because of Powell, and I have no intention of championing Obama's ideas.

I've liked and respected Obama since day one. "Like and respect," however, don't translate into agreeability, as I'm sure you know.

Over the last couple weeks, I've come to the conclusion that the GOP, in its present form, may not deserve to govern this country for another four years. Powell said a lot today that I've said in more recent posts on my blog.

Now, my wife thinks I'll still vote for McCain, and my mom thinks I'm just hopping on the bandwagon. You think I'm at least half full of shit. I expect that.

The reality is that while I'm still skeptical of Obama, he did at least work to earn my vote. And even as partisan as I've been in my defenses of McCain, I can't say the same for him. And, if nothing else, I can at least send a signal to my fellow Republicans/conservatives that our "politics as usual" is no longer viable.

"He worked to earn it" ... I'll give you that. However, is it fair to say (and I think I read a comment by you where you alluded to this) that you are voting against McCain, more than voting for Obama?

BrotherJonah was a roofer who became disabled, with injured feet. He was out scrounging for scrap metal today (against his doctor's orders), to get enough food money to last him and his landlady through the weekend. BrotherJonah shares a house in Colorado Springs, Colorado with a widow who he calls Miss Johnnie. He came home and found the woman was crying and showing him a table full of Chinese food. He thought one of our friends or my relatives had come over and bought for them. But the real story was much more interesting.

Obama volunteers were canvasing in the area and knocked on the door of Miss Johnnie. She is a registered Republican, but told them she was supporting Obama. She then started to tell them her troubles, including how her husband was a Vietnam Vet who died of Agent Orange. One of the volunteers was a Marine and a Vietnam Vet. The volunteer then started making calls on his cell phone. Soon, he handed the phone to Miss Johnnie. It was Barack Obama.

The woman told Barack about her daughter Michelle, a Marine who had been deployed to Iraq twice, and whose scheduled discharge may be delayed because of the Stop Loss rules. She talked about her continous troubles with the VA concerning her husband's medical bills. She talked about the difficulty of getting the VA to cover medical expenses that she had paid out of pocket, and the nitpicky paperwork errors by the VA. She told him about her difficulty affording food.

About 20 minutes later a very large order of Chinese food came to the door. The delivery man was a recent immigrant and didn't speak English, so he called his boss, who told them that Obama had called and put the order on his personal credit card. Brotherjonah came home and had only been able to buy a half gallon of milk, enough food for one meal and some cat food. Instead, they had enough food to last until Monday.

Wow what a Sunday morning filled with good news....first and most importantly they found that little boy. It was heartbreaking to think he was caught up in the foolishness of his family. So I am happy to learn he is safe.

Then to learn Obama raised an unbelievable $150M in a single month adding over half a million NEW donors. It is simply staggering.

Then after enjoying the pictures from the St. Louis Obama rally, I discovered there was was a rally in Kansas City and there was 75,000 at that event. I love this quote from the blog linked below:

When it comes to the public's image of John McCain, it's as if somebody dialed the electricity down in the past month. For Barack Obama, the juice is still flowing.

People's regard for the Republican presidential nominee has deteriorated across-the-board since September, an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll showed Friday, with McCain losing ground in how favorably he's seen and in a long list of personal qualities voters seek in White House contenders.

Perceptions of Obama have improved or remained steady. Beyond views of the two rivals' character traits, McCain faces another problem -- Obama is more trusted on the economy, the contest's commanding issue, including a 15-percentage-point edge for better grasping how the raging financial crisis is affecting people.

Obama's image has been sturdy even as voters' views of the overall campaign have tumbled downhill since September. The portion of people saying the contest excites them has sunk to 32 percent while those calling it frustrating have grown to 41 percent -- and in both cases, six in 10 of those whose feelings have worsened are McCain backers.

Paralleling McCain's problems are similar ones faced by his running mate, Sarah Palin.

(Newser) – Mervyn's will be closing all of its 149 stores before the end of the year and holding huge going-out-of business sales, the Bay Area's Daily Review reports. The California-based department store chain filed for bankruptcy in July and had been fruitlessly scrambling for a sale or a deal with landlords and creditors that would keep it alive. More than 3,000 jobs will be lost in the Bay Area alone.

A statement from Mervyns' CEO blamed the demise of the 59-year-old chain on the "extremely challenging retail environment" and said all other possibilities had been exhausted. Retail analysts said the company's mix of quality and discount items had failed to secure it a niche in recent years, and things worsened after the low-to-middle-income shoppers it targeted were hit hard by California's slumping economy.
