rikyrah: Just got an e-mail from the Obama Campaign.
Over the weekend, John McCain's top adviser announced their plan to stop engaging in a debate over the economy and "turn the page" to more direct, personal attacks on Barack Obama.
In the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, they want to change the subject from the central question of this election. Perhaps because the policies McCain supported these past eight years and wants to continue are pretty hard to defend.
But it's not just McCain's role in the current crisis that they're avoiding. The backward economic philosophy and culture of corruption that helped create the current crisis are looking more and more like the other major financial crisis of our time.
During the savings and loan crisis of the late '80s and early '90s, McCain's political favors and aggressive support for deregulation put him at the center of the fall of Lincoln Savings and Loan, one of the largest in the country. More than 23,000 investors lost their savings. Overall, the savings and loan crisis required the federal government to bail out the savings of hundreds of thousands of families and ultimately cost American taxpayers $124 billion.
Sound familiar?
In that crisis, John McCain and his political patron, Charles Keating, played central roles that ultimately landed Keating in jail for fraud and McCain in front of the Senate Ethics Committee. The McCain campaign has tried to avoid talking about the scandal, but with so many parallels to the current crisis, McCain's Keating history is relevant and voters deserve to know the facts -- and see for themselves the pattern of poor judgment by John McCain.
So at noon Eastern on Monday, October 6th, we're releasing a 13-minute documentary about the scandal called "Keating Economics: John McCain and the Making of a Financial Crisis" -- it will be available at KeatingEconomics.com, along with background information that every voter should know.
Did they just say KEATING 5? HAHAHAHAHAH!!! Love it! :>)

A new Minneapolis Star Tribune poll shows Barack Obama opening an expansive lead in Minnesota, which appears to further shrink the electoral map of John McCain.
Some 55 percent of respondents said they support Obama, compared to 37 percent who back McCain. The last Star Tribune Minnesota Poll, conducted in September, showed Obama and McCain deadlocked at 45 percent.
The 18-point improvement comes as 58 percent of respondents said the Illinois senator would do a better job handling the economy while only 30 percent said the same of McCain.
The poll, conducted between September 30 and October 2, is based on 1,084 interviews with likely voters.
While the Star Tribune attributed the surge in part to "an increase in the number of Minnesotans who call themselves Democrats," Republicans questioned the results, and contended the most recent poll surveyed a disproportionately Democratic-leaning group of likely voters, and thus overstated support for Democratic candidates.
“These numbers would be accurate if the Star Tribune had done this poll in New York— not in Minnesota,” Glen Bolger, a pollster for Republican Sen. Norm Coleman said.
A portion of the Minnesota poll released yesterday showed a 13-point jump in support for Democratic comedian-turned-politician Al Franken, who's now taken his first clear lead, 43 percent to 34 percent, against Coleman.
On a conference call Thursday, the McCain campaign mapped out its electoral strategy for the remaining thirty days, with a focus on several states where the RealClear polling averages show Obama in front: Colorado (where Obama has a 4.4-point lead), Wisconsin (5), Pennsylvania (9.6), New Hampshire (5.6), New Mexico (7.8), Nevada (1.8)—and Minnesota.
THERE IS MORE.

Here are a couple of interesting sites paid for by the Obama campaign (according to the notes on the bottom of each site). I got to them first through a link from the recent Action Wire email about changing the subject that led to a page on the my.barackobama.com site (OffTopic -- here). A link at the bottom led to the first site, and a link at the bottom of the Lobbyist page on that site led to the second:
The first two doors we knocked on we only received shouts through the door. We explained we were from the Obama campaign and they yelled back they were already registered. I was beginning to think this would be a waste of time. As we exited the car at the next building we heard through an open window "Holy crap-there's white people wearing Obama shirts coming this way."

OK, take this one with as much salt as you took the Rolling Stones article about John McCain:
Democratic surrogates say they've been given the go-ahead from the Obama campaign to mention John McCain's associations with S&L kingpin Charles Keating and other historically tarnished creatures when asked about Obama's connection to ex-Weatherman William Ayers.
A senior Democrat who has had contact with Obama's high command points to Democratic strategist Paul Begala's comments on this morning's Meet the Press.
Begala noted that McCain once "sat on the board of a very right wing organization," the U.S. Council for World Freedom, led by a retired Army Maj. General named John Singlaub. The Anti-Defamation League allegedly called the CWF's parent organization a gathering place for racists and anti-Semites.
Said Begala: "Now, that's not John McCain. I don't think he is that. But, but, you know, the problem is that a lot of people know John McCain's record better than Governor Palin, and he does not want to play guilt by association or this thing could blow up in his face."

Sarah Palin does not know what an Achilles Heel is!?
How do you get to be 44 years old, without ever once hearing about - reading about - or hearing a reference to the term "Achilles Heel"? Even if you never read Greek Mythology...at some point in 44 years, you must have heard the term and wondered what it meant. Or, at least gleaned the meaning of the term by the context in which it was used.
Is Sarah playing dumb to pander to the functionally illiterate and bigoted? Or does she really not know what "Achilles Heel" means. Both possibilities are equally abhorrent.
Crazy old Dick Gregory said this over a year ago. He said folks weren't reaching back far enough (with the comparisons to JFK and RFK). He said Obama was channelling FDR.
I have been a very ignorant American. I apologize to God and everyone in my country. I have never seen living conditions as horrendous as some of these elderly people are living in. Note to self - detachment is no longer an option - I will now be much much more involved in community issues.
My second impression -
I have been going out every day for the past two weeks. Early on, my canvassing partner and I ran into two young black men - bling, tattooes, etc. I try not to be racist - but it was all I could do not to be scared to death. They came up to us - and we introduced ourselves. The one gentleman's name is Kai. I asked Kai if he was registered to vote - he said No and we discussed how he could register. He looked up at me - and I swear he was tearing up in his eyes - he said - "You are the first white man who has ever spoken to me with respect in my life. I appreciate all the work you are doing for Obama." He then asked for more registration forms - he took about 100.
Lilytiger
What keeps being highlighted in all these diaries of white canvassers is that they are breaking through their own fears about black people because they believe enough in Obama. They wouldn't have the fearlessness to go into some of the neighborhoods so they would not have learned that we all are basically the same. We all want to be seen, treated with respect and not forgotten.
The country has already changed because of Obama. These experiences now over shadow the myths they had.
What a moment in time.
TruthSeeker
Isn't it great how Obama gear becomes a sort of passport into ethnic neighborhoods where anyone wearing it is identified as a friend.
rikyrah
best part TS, to piggyback on you:
I understand from a friend at a local official registration location that Kai did indeed show up - with about 50 of his friends in tow. I actually started crying.

What Truth posted was what got to me the most. The fact that a white man can admit his bigotry and still get on through it to support Barack and face down this big scary-looking Black man.
And that the big, scary-looking Black man could get respect for the first time in his life from a white man who worked through his bigotry.
That's what this campaign has made happen.

My neighbor must be really pissed today. Palin must have said something that got under his skin. The reason I say this is because after I posted my diary, I went to eat and saw him walk across the street to another neighbor with another McCain sign. These two talk frequently (I see them all the time) but my neighbor was gesturing at the McCain sign and was rather animated in whatever he was saying. Oh to be a fly on the wall

Is the media going to talk about the interviews(more) and press conferences that Gov. Palin isn't giving? During the debate she did not answer any questions. That was not even a debate. Are they going to just roll over and let our opponent's campaign treat them like this? Have they no pride?

AP: Palin's Ayers Attack "Racially Tinged" DOUGLASS K. DANIEL | October 5, 2008 02:40 PM EST |
Once again Obama is being portrayed as un-American, not like the Joe six-packs that make up this country, and he hangs with terrorists. But instead of the fringe groups sending out emails, Palin is using it as part of her stump speech. Sigh.
I guess it's about to be open season on associations. McCain better get ready.
"Though I am flattered that Governor Palin has chosen to cite me as a source of wisdom, what I said had nothing to do with politics. This is yet another example of McCain and Palin distorting the truth, and all the more reason to remember that this campaign is not about gender, it is about which candidate has an agenda that will improve the lives of all Americans, including women. The truth is, if you care about the status of women in our society and in our troubled economy, the best choice by far is Obama-Biden."
JJai
This quote is alarming. As Christians we believe that the only thing that can separate us from God, and heaven as our reward, is belief in Jesus Christ NOT support for Sarah Palin.
Cute excerpt: In interviews and speeches, Michelle frequently talks about her early impressions of Barack. When she first met him, she told her local newspaper, the Hyde Park Herald, "he had no money; he was really broke. He wasn't ever going to try to impress me with things. His wardrobe was kind of cruddy . . . His first car had so much rust that there was a rusted hole in the passenger door. You could see the ground when you were driving. He loved that car. It would shake ferociously when it would start up. I thought, 'This brother is not interested in ever making a dime.' "
Enjoy, T.

T.
Out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time...LOL!
The AP article somebody linked to kills me with that bs that Obama talking about how "out of touch" and "erratic" McCain has been is clear swipe at his age.
On Saturday's thread, it was brought up that John McCain's brother called Arlington in Northern Virginia "Communist Country" because of what seems to be overwhelming support for Obama in that area. It is interesting that he would use the term "communist" since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was also labeled by his critics as a 'communist" in an effort to discredit his movement. To me, this has given me a clearer picture of why McCain was opposed to the King holiday and found himself often supporting individuals like Richard Quinn and Evan Meacham who were critical and opposed to Dr. King. Make no mistake about it, McCain's brother's use of the term "communist" is no slip of the tongue----to me it is the same term many used as code for "this black man has too much power" during the era of King's rise as a civil rights leader.
Here's a couple things I found over at Color of Change about McCain's stance on MLK : McCain’s Contorted Position on Federal King Holiday
McCain Voted Against Creating Martin Luther King Holiday. In 1983, McCain voted against a motion to suspend the rules and pass a bill to designate the third Monday of every January as a federal holiday in honor of the late civil rights leader, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The motion passed 89-77. [HR 3706, Vote 289, 8/2/83; CQ 1983]
Arizona Governor Rescinded Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In 1987, One of newly elected Governor Evan Mecham’s first acts in office was to rescind Arizona’s recognition of the Martin Luther King Holiday. “Mecham strikes many voters as a simpleminded ideologue who is giving a bad name to the nation's second-fastest-growing state. After rescinding the Jan. 19 holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Mecham defended the use of the term "pickaninnies" for blacks.” [Time 11/9/87]
McCain Said He Thought Governor Was Correct in His Decision According to the Huffington Post, “In 1983, McCain voted against passing a bill to designate the third Monday of every January as a federal holiday in honor of King. Four years later, then-Arizona Governor Evan Mecham rescinded Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday, saying it had been established through an illegal executive order by his Democratic predecessor. McCain said he thought Mecham was correct in his decision.” [Sam Stein, Huffington Post, 4/1/08]
McCain: Wrong on Key Issues for People of Color McCain Consistently Voted Against The Civil Rights Act Of 1990. In 1990, McCain voted against a bill designed to address employer discrimination at least 4 times. According to the Washington Post, the “Civil Rights Act of 1990 is designed to overturn several recent Supreme Court rulings that made it much more difficult for individual employees to prove discrimination. The legislation, being fought by business, also would impose new penalties on employers convicted of job discrimination.” [S 2104, Vote #304, 10/24/90; Vote #276, Vote #275, 10/16/90; Vote #161, 7/18/90; Washington Post, 7/9/90]
McCain Strategist Opposed King Holiday McCain Defended Controversial Spokesman Richard Quinn, McCain's who called the MLK Holiday "Vitriolic and Profane." Richard Quinn, was a South Carolina "strategist" for McCain in the 2000 campaign. In a Partisan View column, Richard Quinn wrote, "King Day should have been rejected because its purpose is vitriolic and profane. By celebrating King as the incarnation of all they admire, they [black leaders] have chosen to glorify the histrionic rather than the heroic and by inference they spurned the brightest and the best among their own race. Ignoring the real heroes in our nation's life, the blacks have chosen a man who represents not their emancipation, not their sacrifices and bravery in service to their country; rather, they have chosen a man whose role in history was to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul.” Quinn has also advocated electing David Duke, and sold T-Shirts through his magazine celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. [Partisan View, Southern Partisan, Fall, 1983; Partisan View, Southern Partisan, Winter, 1989, PFAW Release, 2/17/00] [Spartanburg Herald-Journal, 12/23/05; Vanity Fair, 11/04]
McCain Defended Quinn as ‘Respected’ and a ‘Fine Man.” Despite Mr. Quinn’s writings and history of racial insensitivity, McCain defended him as a ‘respected’ and ‘fine man’ and refused to fire him. [Associated Press, 2/18/00; New York Times, 2/8/00]
I am personally tired of the media giving a "pass" to this man simply because he was a POW. Don't get me wrong, I love our fellow American military citizens-- -but it does not simply entitle you to the presidency of the United States. Hell, even D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammed served in the Army and looked at how he turned out.
It is mind-boggling to me that John Mccain is considered a foreign policy guru when he has made considerable gaffes dealing with everything from policies to geography, dissing our NATO allies---and last week he even had the nerve to say he asks Gov. Palin for advice on foreign policy---that is too scary.
I am tired of him using this surge argument about Iraq. Most Americans KNOW this was an unnecessary war that has led our nation and troops into a needless precarious situation. Even Gen. Petraues says he would not use the word "victory" in describing progress in Iraq. I was thinking of an analogy the other day that I felt conveyed my feelings on Iraq---- You find yourself on trial for a DUI in which you kill a couple and the jury has a choice of convicting you of involuntary manlaughter or vehicular homicide. The jury hands down the lesser of the 2 charges, involuntary manslaughter, and you breath a sigh of relief. The problem is you still killed 2 people due to your reckless behavior....and even though you are relieved of the lighter sentence, you still can't consider that a "victory" because the lingering truth is that you ended the lives of 2 people who didin't deserve it. Our armed forces need a Commander-in-chief who is not obsessed with war---diplomacy can work ----and we also need someone who will ensure that our military members are treated well when they come home. John McCain has a disgusting record when it comes veterans legislation---and McCain with is military background has never served on the Veteran Affairs Committee. I guess that explains why he feels increased education benefits, in the form of the new GI bill was too "generous" for our military members--he has never needed those additonal perks in life being the son of an Admiral and married to a multi-million dollar beer heiress.
McCain has also been given far too much credit for being "tough"---that he will stand up to world leaders. McCain can't even handle the media, who have been too lightweight regarding his campaign IMO. McCain canceled a CNN interview when Campbell Brown questioned Palin's qualifications. He won't grant an interview to NBC for Gov. Palin because of commentators like Keith Olbermann who digs in his campaign ass and does the real truthtelling. The McCain won't even respond to the Rachel Maddow Show. HIs wife complains that the ladies from the "VIew" "picked our bones" when questioned about their consistent campaign strategy of deliberately lying on Obama. He kicks Maureen Dowd off his campaign plane. He accuses Mika, the New York Times, and virtually anyone who disagrees with them as being in the tank for Obama. And most significantly, John McCain could not even look Obama in the eye, with his condescending attitude and disrespect displayed for all the world to see.
John McCain has embraced the same people who demonized him and his family in 2000. Even hiring Tucker Eschew, one of the masterminds of the "black baby smear" to his campaign. McCain doesn't stand for shyt----I would never associate with those who used my children as a weapon to discredit me--- John McCain is no maverick but a pushover who is willing to lose all decency to win an election. And now I am one to believe that this mythical "maverick" that the media touted was only a persona--perhaps his break with the Republicans on certain issues was due to "sour grapes" he had with the Republican party after his defeat in 2000. It is not a coincidence that every issue that he supposedly "broke away" with his party are issues that he has totally flip-flopped on---John McCain never stood for those issues in the first place.
And it is laughable that McCain created the biggest celebrity of them all---Gov. Palin. After she came along, he was finally able to draw larger crowds. And like actresses, she sticks to the same script. And like the Paris Hilton's of the world, she has to wink at the audience or do other outrageous antics to send her male wingnut admirers onto their sexual fantasy lands (because there is absolutely no reason a candidate has to wink at an audience during a debate) And the American media has to reach out and demand access but are denied just like fans catching a glimpse of their favorite singer backstage before being whisked away to their dressing room. And let us not forget how some celebrities get to evade their criminal behavior by hiring the best legal teams, just like the McCain campaign has taken over the investigation of Troopergate and the government of Alaska.
And most of all, let us look at the shadiness of Keating 5---John McCain's knee-deep involvement in political favoritism, lavish gifts, ---his wife's sweetheart business deals with Keating----and the scandal that cost taxpayers billions. CIndy McCain and her theft and addiction to drugs behind he guise of her charitable oraganization----why wasn't she forced to stand trial? And then tried to malign the whistleblower. Why was John McCain never held accountable for his lackluster performance as an aviator after it was proven he had a reputation for destroying aircraft---at least 3 times due to stalled aircraft---and was involved in at least 5 mishaps total. In today's military, he would have been considered a liability and probably had his wings confiscated. John Mccain and his notorious temper and erratic behavior are angerous for this country---PERIOD.
We need to figure out how to get this around. The fact is that MSM is NOT doing their job. No one is holding McCain accountable for this. We need to get this word out, Monie. Like our man says "we are the ones we've been waiting for".
BTW, I recently had a mental image of Obama's girls walking around the White House. It just made it that much more real. We're down to the wire, let's get 'em elected.
My Obama Screensaver Collection is awesome thanks to the great pics posted on JJP.
DOES RACE TRUMP THE ECONOMY?
Apparently "The Heartland of America" believes it and McCain is so sure that if he gets the discussion back to Obama's skin color, he can win. McCain isworking hard at turning the Obama discussion back to "We don't really know him" which translates to "DON'T FORGET HE'S BLACK."
It has to be our hope that ones pocket book, the recession, gas prices, lost mortgages, lost jobs, lost retirements and the $700B deficit economy would outweigh the issue of race. The sad part is that the issue of race may be more deeply entrenched than we realize. When race trumps people's bank account, it's a sad state of affairs in the USA.
What's unsaid on the race issue: Although the discussion about the debate was on Queen Sarah, Biden was the real victor. We don't talk about race much in this country but if the minds of men could speak, this is what we would hear from majority voters: "I feel more comfortable now in voting for Obama with Biden at his side based on his performance at the debate." Biden delivers the vote and wins the minds of men.
The OCTOBER SURPRISE: WILL RACE TRUMP THE ECONOMY?
Obama's unprecedented rise to power IS Divine Providence. No weapon formed against him shall prosper, it won't work.
Micheline
Given how desperate the McCain campaign is and Tom Brokaw's antipathy to Obama. I am increasingly uncomfortable with Tom Brokaw moderating the debate. My fear is that the debate will be a repeat of the "debate" ABC . My fear that they will use citizens asking questions about Obama's patriotism and Rev. Wright even though they have nothing to do with the economy being in dire straits. And we already know that Brokaw and McCain are friends so there's more reason for Brokaw to be biased towards McCain since the Republican desperately needs a game changer. I raised that question at Daily Kos and some answered that Brokaw is a pro but we felt the same way with Gibson and look how that turned out.
Don't tell me after Gwen Ifill's bias was questioned you're going to turn around and question Brokaw's...
Val
we were already questioning Brokaw when he falsified poll results in favor of McCain after the first Obama/McCain debate. So he proved he was in fact biased. Which was entirely different from Ifill who did nothing wrong.
Let Brokaw try to hang him. Barack will fight back against the lynch mob and win.
Just watch.

Let's not forget Barack went on Fox twice. He's constantly entering the lion's den.
I have no fear. Barack will fight, he is use to fighting.

It’s hard to believe that the corporate media is headlining Sarah Palin’s warmed-over-from-the-primaries Sean Hannity smears against Obama. But then again, according to the site Think Progress, the Mainstream Media Stand To Receive $1.44 Billion From McCain’s Tax Cuts.
While Palin, as the aerial presidential campaign wolf hunter, retreads disproven slander that Obama was somehow in league with an act committed by Bill Ayers when Palin was in the second grade -- so to speak -- and Obama was also in elementary school, the mainstream press ignores Palin’s extremely radical ties to extremist political and religious movements.
The corporate media shot down the notion that Palin was affiliated and supportive of the Alaskan Independence (Secessionist) Party by accepting the McCain campaign excuse that she has always been a registered Republican. But then explain this video from this year – 2008 – in which Governor Palin welcomes and praises the secessionist party during their convention in Fairbanks. Watch it. You can’t wish reality away, although Palin is superb at trying to blink it away.
Also, you can support and be supportive or a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, as you would the John Birch Society (and there is a photo from the '90s of Palin with John Birch Society literature), without having to have them as your registered political party. That appears to be the route that Sarah and Todd Palin have taken. But you know that’s just too "subtle" a distinction for the mainstream corporate press to grasp, so they rather recycle disproven slander against Obama than expose Palin’s radical present, not just her fanatical past.
As we noted in a BuzzFlash headline this weekend: "Palin Who Pals Around with the Alaska Independence (Secessionist) Party, Gets Blessed by a Nutcase Minister Who Protects Her from Witch Doctors, Listens to Speakers Who Believe Jews are Damned, Calls the Iraq War Divinely Inspired (and More of Unacceptable Anti-American and Extremist Beliefs and Behavior) is Now Following the McCain Effort to Reawaken Old Discredited Smears on Obama. Palin is Just a Rabid Pit Bull. Forget the Lipstick." And that’s not even the half of her UnAmerican beliefs, not even a fifth of them.
But given the desperation of the McCain campaign because somehow – miraculously – reality has peaked through the crowds and many Americans are seeing the Grand Hypocrisy Party as the larcenous cabal that it is, Palin is being employed to resurrect the Obama slander that is only newsworthy because of the fact that the McCain campaign has run out of other lies to peddle.
Meanwhile, Palin – who is a believer in a renegade theology called "The Third Wave" that believes God has chosen certain people (her) to lead America into preparation for Armageddon, indeed that her ascension to the presidency is a prerequisite for End Times – is getting the kids gloves treatment from the national press (except for, unexpectedly, Katie Couric). Think of the billions of dollars that is spent on corporate news reporting and try to fathom that they covered the VP as a good "performance" on Palin’s part, without dealing with her complete deficiency in offering any plan or vision for America’s future. (Meanwhile, the "snap polls" that BuzzFlash received – admittedly unscientific – ALL showed that Biden won by at least 20% with the crucial Independent vote on every major issue.)
Remember that Palin was placed on the ticket, allegedly, because a rather secretive organization of far right evangelicals told the McCain campaign to appoint her V.P. or risk the formidable institutional support and get out the vote support of the Armageddon crowd. McCain, seeing that he evoked all the enthusiasm of road kill, relented. This was the same group of radical evangelical "leaders" who anointed George W. Bush in a secret meeting (no media or taping equipment is allowed) in 2000. Remember, they didn't choose to McCain; they chose to back Palin with the hope that she will soon succeed McCain.
Since then, Sarah Palin – in her own language of "Crack Barrel" expressions, scripted campaign slogans, and dropped sentences – has been running not for VP but for president.
As Frank Rich implies in another scintillating column on October 5, when the Governor accidentally said recently that she was running on the Palin-McCain ticket, she wasn’t kidding. Palin has said several things that contradict the McCain campaign message – and they don’t seem intentional to try and draw in a different group of voters.
In Colorado on Saturday, where she resurrected some slime against Obama, from Sean Hannity and the gang, she argued that the McCain campaign shouldn’t have given up on Michigan. Say what?
McCain is acting so petulantly and irascible of late, it is hard to take him seriously as a candidate. As Frank Rich notes, McCain is now relying on Palin, a radical extremist in the guise of a "down home" persona, to carry him across the finish line.
McCain appears to just want to cross the finish line, to show that he could be elected before he dies. How long he serves is of less importance to him than to feel validated by winning the presidential election. He is not putting the country first; he is putting himself first, a man with a fierce grievance that he wasn’t nominated by his party earlier in his youth, when he had the fire to do something. Now, he just wants his trophy presidency and then he’s ready to turn it over to Sarah Palin.
Those of you who doubt it should remember the below the radar comment that Palin made in the VP debate, one of the few substantive remarks she uttered. In essence, she said that she would model her role as VP after Cheney. BuzzFlash wrote a commentary on this horrifying power grab ("Like Putting Lipstick on a Cheney: Palin's Vow to Continue Unitary Executive and Lack of Accountability for VP Position") that doesn’t exist in the Constitution and to which Biden appropriately replied:
"Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we've had probably in American history... The Constitution is explicit. The only authority the vice president has from the legislative standpoint is the vote, only when there is a tie vote. He has no authority relative to the Congress. The idea he's part of the Legislative Branch is a bizarre notion invented by Cheney to aggrandize the power of a unitary executive and look where it has gotten us. It has been very dangerous."
But Sarah Palin, to quote "The Blues Brothers," is on a mission from God.
And as Frank Rich notes, the ultimate game changer may be that if somehow the McCain-Palin tickets squeaks through (and it would have to be with voter suppression and stolen votes), expect Palin to assume the presidency right quick.
That’s the plan of the Anti-American extremist evangelical right wing. With Palin as president, it becomes their country, not ours. They are the ultimate terrorists against democracy and the Constitution, but you won’t read a word about it in the corporate press."
Even the AP thinks Palin went a step too far with that "palling with terrorist" crap.
Val
I have a feeling there will be a few more speeches encouraging citizens to rise up over the next few weeks.
Love this one from Bruce Springsteen
Hello Philly,
I am glad to be here today for this voter registration drive and for Barack Obama, the next president of the United States.
I've spent 35 years writing about America, its people, and the meaning of the American Promise. The Promise that was handed down to us, right here in this city from our founding fathers, with one instruction: Do your best to make these things real: opportunity, equality, social and economic justice, a fair shake for all of our citizens, the American idea, as a positive influence, around the world for a more just and peaceful existence. These are the things that give our lives hope, shape, and meaning. They are the ties that bind us together and give us faith in our contract with one another.
I've spent most of my creative life measuring the distance between that American promise and American reality. For many Americans, who are today losing their jobs, their homes, seeing their retirement funds disappear, who have no healthcare, or who have been abandoned in our inner cities, the distance between that promise and that reality has never been greater or more painful.
I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his work. I believe he understands, in his heart, the cost of that distance, in blood and suffering, in the lives of everyday Americans. I believe as president, he would work to restore that promise to so many of our fellow citizens who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning. After the disastrous administration of the past 8 years, we need someone to lead us in an American reclamation project. In my job, I travel the world, and occasionally play big stadiums, just like Senator Obama. I've continued to find, wherever I go, America remains a repository of people's hopes, possibilities, and desires, and that despite the terrible erosion to our standing around the world, accomplished by our recent administration, we remain, for many, a house of dreams. One thousand George Bushes and one thousand Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down.
They will, however, be leaving office, dropping the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and our financial crisis in our laps. Our sacred house of dreams has been abused, looted, and left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs care; it needs saving, it needs defending against those who would sell it down the river for power or a quick buck. It needs strong arms, hearts, and minds. It needs someone with Senator Obama's understanding, temperateness, deliberativeness, maturity, compassion, toughness, and faith, to help us rebuild our house once again. But most importantly, it needs us. You and me. To build that house with the generosity that is at the heart of the American spirit. A house that is truer and big enough to contain the hopes and dreams of all of our fellow citizens. That is where our future lies. We will rise or fall as a people by our ability to accomplish this task. Now I don't know about you, but I want that dream back, I want my America back, I want my country back.
So now is the time to stand with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come on up for the rising.
JJP - headed out to a fundraising drive with family and friends. Trying to raise a sizeable donation for Obama/Biden -- I know they will need every help they can get for the next few weeks.
Talk to you later All -

Rikyrah and all, See a cute picture from Barack Obama's flickr of an event in Michigan. It a nice picture showing Barack with a couple of kids and what looks like ther Dad and Granpa. It's pretty cute.
Yesterday I was going off when someone suggested that Obama is responsible for Tyler Perry and someone responded saying . . . . . everything isn't about Obama. My response -- in John McCain's world. Everything is about Obama especially if it comes from a black person.
Val, that link you posted is such crap, why do we even bother to give it credibility by repeating the nonsense?
Supporters and donors to politicians have different views from those they support.
Perry isn't a part of Obama's official campaign.
There's no there there.
APeach
True...but I see it from the union angle, not a racial one, which I find bizarre because geeze, he can't speak for every Black person.
But if you're getting support from unions, then you don't want to associate with someone who is anti-union, cross a picket line, etc. I'm sure if there's anything at all to be "handled," it will be.
But let me just say this: what a crappy thing for Perry to pull.
Val
Craig I hear you - btw yall we raised $10,000 today for Barack!!! Yea Democrats.
Craig - you are preaching to the choir. I said basically the same thing yesterday. This post was a response to the person I had the discussion with yesterday. My reaction - do what I can to help raise money for Barack and Joe - they will need every dime for the next few weeks to push back on this crap.
In the meanwhile - I have been making sure folks don't overreact - stick to the facts, not get side tracked because Craig -- we knew it was not going to be easy and we would have to fight to down to the last minute. I said before - this race is not about just Barack or Joe. It is about all of us. So an insult to Barack or Joe is an insult to me and my family. I refuse to take it.
I am ready and my intention is to get everyone I know fired up and ready to kick a*s on this nonsense. It is not going to work this time. I will be darned if I allow them to swiftboat us this year.
Go Obama/Biden/We the People 08!

$10,000??? that's crazy! The nation is in your debt!
(How many people is that, btw?)
Val
150 people. My birthday was last week so instead of a birthday party we/I hosted a fundraiser for Barack/Biden.
Everyone's mocking Lowry, but I at least partially agree with him. I described myself as stunned, which isn't that far from mesmerized. I had a tremendous amount of difficulty processing any meaning in what she was saying. Part of the reason for that was that she was speaking extraordinarily quickly and part of it was that she kept making unsignaled changes in direction. Part of it was because a lot of what she was saying was filler, and basically meaningless. But another big factor was that I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't believe that she was acting like a beauty contestant, and it stunned me almost insensate. I couldn't believe that John McCain had allowed this to happen. I still can't. So my sympathy goes out to Rich Lowry. He's now the butt of a joke. But, for me, those little starbursts in the living room were real. They came from my frying synapses.
I had hoped I was finally done with acting as an interpreter for politicians whose relationship with the English language was tumultuous.
BWA HA HA HA HA
Town
Sarah Palin is a bimbo for going out there wearing red stripper pumps and winking and blowing kisses at the debate. She is a fool because she actually thinks she belongs in the Big Leagues when at best she belongs on the Company Softball League.
But she's not politically stupid and she knows that McCain will throw her under the bus if/when they lose. She's only a small part of McCain's problem but she'll get 100% of the blame. So she's going to start throwing McCain under the bus because she's looking forward to 2012. She's the fresh new face of the GOP and she knows it. Those crowds ain't coming for him, they're coming for her. The only reason people are enthusiastic about McCain's candidacy is because of HER.
McCain's people know that, which is why they've already started throwing her under the bus. McCain is not only running against Obama, he's running against his own running mate.
He made his bed. And he's pissed he doesn't get to nail her in it.

Town,
Your observations have been so on point for awhile now. But, all the hounds that McCain's people are keeping at bay in Alaska will be GONE, November 5th. And, she's going to have to deal with all the cockroaches folks have shone a light on in Alaska.
The knives are poised; they're only waiting for November 5th. And all the questions that everyone here and there have posed that they've been stonewalling on, will start to tumble out.
Town
I heard that Todd was going to testify? Maybe the Palins figure they better clear up Troopergate NOW before the lions get to them on Nov. 5th.
Did you read the Mudflats account of the two different rallies? They are tryiing to figure out how the mud got in the roads leading to the Obama rallies.
rikyrah
you and I know how the mud got there. don't fool me

On Meet the Press, Paul Begala let people know that if McCain wants to play guilt by association, he'll lose. There was some group that McCain had a relationship with that was a right wing racist organization. And Paul used his notes to get it ought there and get it right.
The Dangerous One isn't going to know what hit him before this is all over.
this is the second day your Open Thread post photos have brought tears to my eyes ~ in a good way. so easy to get discouraged with the right wing hate machine in full cry. this, and the photo yesterday, they lifted my spirits. thank you for that.
Well, the right wing hate machine is going full throttle with Queen Palin leading. She is trying to say that Obama is a terrorist and will be relentlessly attacking him in the coming weeks to lead a Willie Horton scare campaign. Say it ain't so...they are doing it again
rikyrah
I told y'all - Birth of a Nation, 2008 is upon us.
I know I've been gone for a minute, busy week and all that. But, y'all know I have kept reading and keeping up with the jjp post!
The debate was actually frustrating for me to watch. I knew that Palin would do well enough. In fact, I was getting so fed up of people saying she wouldn't, that's exactly what the McPain camp want to encourage. I keep telling people, coming from Chicago, you can't get far in politics and be a fool or a saint. So:
Number One: Don't look to Obama as a savior. He himself is really good at calling on people to use their power of civic duty, and not to think he will solve all the problems by himself. It's one of the main reasons I support him, he encourages people to get involved and take ownership of the political process.
Number Two: Stop calling Palin a bimbo or a stupid fool. The woman is clearly out of her league, but she is no fool. You don't get as far as a governorship by flailing along on pure luck. She is a shrewd politician, who is now in way over her head. In fact, it's probably best that she be out here now, imagine if she had time to fine-tune her political muster, can you imagine this woman running for president in 2012 with enough experience in the political process to render her competent for playing the game, but as an unknown, as opposed to us knowing in advance what she is really all about. It is actually frightening.
But moving forward! Here are some post I found about religion and whiteness and the election. I've been saying for the longest time we are in a special place in time where we can forge positive relationships with white evangelicals. The younger generation especially. They are starting to move in a more liberal direction, we must do all we can to encourage this. If I have learned nothing else in the past 16 years of following politics, is that we must forge alliances if we want to get anything done.
Gotta go get ready for church, have a great Sunday all!
Anderkoo
JunePearl, as it happens my wife organizes young Christians who are mostly white and mostly evangelical (but also a range of other cultures and Christian faiths) on social justice issues. She is absolutely seeing that change -- but most old-school liberals do NOT see it happening. It's been frustrating from her perspective trying to reach out to other groups -- there are some very strong stereotypes about white evangelicals that most blinds people to the potential. Would love to talk with you more about this if you are interested, drop me a line -- gene@anderkoo.com

NYT: Election divides Catholic Church In Scranton, Pa., every Catholic attending Mass this weekend will hear a special homily about the election next month: Bishop Joseph Martino has ordered every priest in the diocese to read a letter warning that voting for a supporter of abortion rights amounts to endorsing “homicide.”
“Being ‘right’ on taxes, education, health care, immigration and the economy fails to make up for the error of disregarding the value of a human life,” the bishop wrote. “It is a tragic irony that ‘pro-choice’ candidates have come to support homicide — the gravest injustice a society can tolerate — in the name of ‘social justice.’ ”
Bill O'Reilly and Barney Frank faced off over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on Thursday night's "O'Reilly Factor" in one of the most heated "Factor" segments in recent memory.
O'Reilly, who has called for Frank's resignation as the chairman of the House Finance Committee, called Frank a "coward" and told him, "Stop the B.S!"
Frank didn't take O'Reilly's abuse lying down, fighting back, saying, "Bill, here's the problem with going on your show. You start ranting. And the only way to respond is almost to look as boorish as you."
Watch (transcript below):
"Almost as boorish as you!" LOL!!:>)

I also have to say that The Right has been after Frank for years. Openly gay, smart, and fearless, Frank is a nightmare to them.
The good news is that Sarah Palin can complete a sentence...the bad news is that the rest of us have to listen to it, according to Bill Maher in his opening monologue on Friday night.
Maher also had mocking words for Rich Lowry, who thought Palin was 'man straightening.'
In typical news-dump fashion, the McCain campaign put out the last two years of Sarah Palin's tax returns late Friday afternoon.
The information contained a few interesting revelations in what was, otherwise, a fairly mundane filing. Palin, it appears, did not pay taxes on the more than $60,000 of travel reimbursements that she and her family members reportedly billed the state during her 18 months as governor. There is a fairly wonky debate over whether she should have been charged for these trips or whether it was accounted for in her salary. John Bogdanski, a tax professor at the Lewis and Clark Law School, told the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls that they did qualify as taxable income.
It does not appear that such deductions would have been allowable for any amounts attributable to travel by her husband and children. Section 274(m)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code strictly forbids deductions for bringing spouses and dependents along on business travel unless the spouses and dependents (a) are employees of the taxpayer (here, the taxpayer is the governor), (b) are traveling for a bona fide business purpose, and (c) would otherwise be entitled to deduct the travel on their own tax returns. Unless Palin's spouse and kids are also her employees and she can show that they were away on their own businesses, their expenses would not be deductible by the governor. And therefore she cannot exclude from income any per diems attributable to any of them. (By the way, since she's the employee, the income would be required to be reported on her own return, not her kids'.)
I'm just lovin' this!!

By the way, dont forget crap shooting gambling with industry lobbyist McCain. It seems that he forget to tell the IRS about his winnings.
Sarah Palin is the breadwinner and husband Todd is, well — he takes a lot of deductions for his fishing and snow machine racing careers, according to 2007 and 2006 federal tax returns released Friday.<
Sarah Palin makes $125,000 a year as Alaska governor. Plus, since she took the job in December 2006, she hasn't paid taxes on the more than $17,000 she received in controversial per diem payments for working out of the family's lakeside home in Wasilla — some 575 miles from the capital of Juneau.
For the 2007 tax year, Todd Palin's self-employment brought him $66,893 in gross receipts — $49,893 from fishing and $17,000 from snow machine racing. But, the returns show, he claimed so many deductions that he reported only $15,513 net profit from the fishing operation and claimed a $9,639 loss from his racing, leaving him with an overall net income of only $5,874. In addition, Todd earned $43,519 last year working part-time on the North Slope for BP Exploration.
A critic of Gov. Sarah Palin is suing to try to force preservation of any government-related e-mails that Palin sent from private accounts.Andree McLeod, a former state worker, filed the lawsuit against Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, in Anchorage on Thursday. Palin's gubernatorial spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, said Saturday she could not comment on pending litigation.
The hacking of Palin's private account is significant because Palin has sometimes used private e-mail accounts to conduct state business. Previously disclosed e-mails indicate her administration embraced Yahoo accounts as an alternative to government e-mail, which could possibly be released to the public under Alaska's Open Records Act.
"Palin's decision to conduct state business in such an unprofessional and secretive manner suggests that her promise to have an ethical, open, honest and transparent administration is pure bogus," McLeod said in a statement Saturday.
"Equally troubling is the fact that most of Palin's private e-mail accounts have recently been shut down," she said. "I'm seeking the court's help by requesting them to tell the governor to obey Alaska's public record laws."
THERE IS MORE.

rikyrah: OMG!! Alaska just BAKED "McAncient"/The Gov.:
Once again, there were duelling rallies here in Anchorage today. The McCain-Palin rally was held in the just-completed Denaina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. The Obama rally was held outside, just a couple blocks away, at the Delaney Park Strip, also in downtown Anchorage.
One would think that the Republican rally celebrating the hometown girl, in her very very red state would have drawn a huge crowd, and that the Obama rally would be a few brave intrepid souls with a couple signs shivering by the side of the road. One would be wrong.
The Obama rally was all set up and running when I arrived - tents, face painting, t-shirt sales, voter registration, postcard writing to swing states, a huge stage and sound system. By 1:00, there were more than a thousand people milling around with signs, kids, dogs and huge smiles. This was definitely a feel-good place. Hundreds lined the roadside waving signs to appreciative honking motorists, and hundreds more milled around the tent area. Anchorage mayoral candidate and former legislator Eric Croft got up and spoke, so did Kat Pustay who’s heading up the Obama campaign in the state. Then came Ethan Berkowitz, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House seat currently held by Don Young. Ethan welcomed his “fellow revolutionaries”. The crowd went wild.
SKIP
I just had a feeling this rally wasn’t going to have as big a crowd as the Obama rally, because the rally that was held for Palin herself, when she was in Anchorage a few weeks ago only had about 500 people show up. But I walked into the room and I really was stunned. I felt like I had entered an empty chair convention. It was really bad. I actually felt sorry for the organizers for a minute, before I snapped myself out of it. A head count yielded about 250-300 people.

Rikyrah,
That pic is so moving! It can't get any more beautiful.
TruthSeeker
As my Mother would say, God love him, but he's a raging maniac...
The Biden impersonation fell a little flat for me, but all the funny moments ya'll mentionoed were good. The reason why I felt the Biden portion was a little flat is because despite what many MSM pundits said, Biden was SOLID in the debate, even his "friendship" with John McCain was not as heavily parodiable(?). Biden was the better of the two hands down. Of the two, Palin came off as the lesser knowledgable of the two...PERIOD. The best line of the skit for me was exactly what came out of the debate, when the Biden guy said "Joe Biden is BETTER. THAN. THAT". Most Americans agreed. The McCain is my friend, but dangerous riffs were pretty funny too.
Tina Fey was great as always. Latifah was as beautiful as always. To my eyes, she made Ifill better than she was.
Basically, they had to go more out of their way to parody Biden. I did like them "calling" Palin out for the "Can I call you Joe" bit. It's true that throughout the debate she only called him Joe once I think for that lame ass "Say it isn't so Joe" line.
Justice58
Yes it was! I was laughing out loud. The guy playing Joe Biden had me rolling about his home town. No one good came out of it but him! Hilarious.
I loved Queen Latifah as Gwen Ifill. Sure was promoting that book too! lol
rikyrah
LOL at the wig on Queen Latifah, and pushing the book - hilarious.
What was even funnier (and kinda scary too) was the fact that most of what Fey said, was word for word what Palin said during the debates! Talk about about plenty of raw material! LOL!
