Okay, if Obama doesn't make another race speech, let's have a hard hitting add with John Lewis' statement as the theme: "The American people deserve better."

Show the news clips of McCain people saying they intentionally were going to "turn the page" away from the economy and show that page turning into those images Rachel Maddow used on her show and right before the end shift to one of Obama's inspirational "post-racial" primary speeches and contrast it with the incitement of McCain/Palin rallies... fade with John Lewis' statement with a picture of the Diversity of Denver's Democratic Convention.

I would not touch it if I were Obama. If Obama did that he would be getting into the sandbox with McCain. McCain made this bed, let him lay in it all by himself.

It presents an opportunity for him to inspire... for him to put all people who will hear him... put all their eyes on the prize... in light of the country's economic situation... in light of all the goings on.

He had no qualms responding to "Who is Barack Obama?" Part I courtesy of the Clinton campaign. He should seize this opportunity or he can merely be a politician and follow your prescription. It's as simple as that.

Yesterday my wife was "paced" for 6 miles on our local freeway by a driver who came up fast behind her as she merged onto the interstate, then this guy slowed up considerably and settled in along side her. My children were in the car. We have an "Obama '08" sticker in the back window.

I am constantly schooling the folks at my kids school (less than 2% black student body) about the value of diversity, explaining that as black kids especially my boys will have to have the best education, work harder, and strive to be 5 times smarter than white kids in order to be considered equal. That is just the way life is at this point. Maybe it will change in another decade or so but right now, that is where we are.

Ya'll know I don't push the black/white meme simply because I believe you are going to find ignorant assholes in every shape size and color but I am not dumb enough to not recognize we have a long way to go in race relations and I make it a point to have those conversations with the people I meet so they know that I know what time it is. The crowd gathered in front of the Capitol steps, which is right downtown, around the corner from the unoccupied Governor’s Mansion. State employees were encouraged to come in disguise due to fear of reprisals by the Palin administration, a chilling thought. Speakers included fishermen, two pediatricians (including one former head of Alaska Public Health), a former state Game Board rep, college student for gay/lesbian rights who’s about to vote for the first time, two Alaska Native veterans, and someone who read an encouraging letter from Juneau state representative Beth Kertulla.To wrap it up, one of Juneau’s favorite singers, Vicki Van Fleet, belted the following, sung to the tune of Janis Joplin’s Mercedes Benz (lyrics by Sally O of Homer, Alaska):

John Lewis should have a "This is 2008: Jim Crow don't live here anymore" press conference and put McCain on the spot. When it was convenient, McCain claimed that Lewis was one of "three wise men" he would consult when president.

For the next week, that should be a part of the Obama's campaign arsenal. They should demand that the McCain campaign strongly repudiate Gov. Palin and any and every "Obama's a Muslim/Arab" (demand that they speak forcefully against demonizing Arab/Muslim Americans to avoid the kind of hate crimes we saw after 911), etc., etc.

In short, they should demand that McCain make a speech on race and bring up the DOLLAR BILL ad they let McCain slide on earlier in the campaign. They should demand that Senator McCain deal with the "palling around with terrorist" idea which can only suggest that Obama is in league with those who would harm this country.

They should demand that McCain speak forcefully against this idea that Sen. Obama is "not one of us" or doesn't see America "like they do." They should challenge them to stop speaking in racist code.

Senator Obama has consistently treated Sen. McCain with respect and hasn't talked about McCain's racial slights or even began to talk about either McCain's or Palin's unsavory connections. They should demand that Sen. McCain place all of this in the context of this nation's racist history and explain why they saw fit to exploit it.

And, finally, if Sen. McCain isn't willing to do that, the same way Obama made his speech on race then they should say that that makes him unfit to lead. Sen. McCain says he won't let another Katrina happen but we know what he was doing when it happen.

Just got back from Italy! Soooooo tired....but wanted to share how the news over there is so different from what we're fed here. I could only understand the BBC and CNN World News which I have never seen in the USA....and its not even offered on any cable package where I live, but the world economy is in the toilet and the bailout was a straight up necessity for the crap they are not telling us about. And, btw, John Lewis, imho, was describing the hostile environment created by George Wallace's behavior, and warning that McCain's attacks on Obama, which have spawned much hate-mongering in the past week, is fertile ground for similar violent outcomes. He did not say John McCain/Sarah Palin=George Wallace.

What John Lewis has said is not very different from what others have in the past week, including those who share McCain's ideology. His perpective, though, is that he has lived it and knows of what he speaks.

Yeah, somehow McCain is "responsible" for things people say in his rallies but when John Lewis makes a remark nowhere near Obama, somehow, Obama is supposed to condemn Lewis' statement that come nowhere near threatening McCain's safety.

I mean, Rep. Lewis didn't call for people to "kill" McCain... Nothing like that. Rep. Lewis is a Black man who spoke out strongly against the racism drummed up by a White man and his campaign that was fully aware of the racism they were trying to exploit. It was only when the mobs started to hurt McCain's standing that McCain spoke up but he didn't CONDEMN any of it.

Nowhere did McCain say that kind of HATE and FEARMONGER has no part in our discourse and I DON'T WANT YOUR VOTE. That's a condemnation. What McCain did was damage control until and unless he comes out and strongly condemns the much more dangerous and insulting tactics of his campaign.

When McCain himself refused to look at Obama and couldn't RESPECTFULLY address him as Senator Obama "in his face" as opposed to referring to him as "that one"... Well, there is no way that anyone owes McCain any consideration.

They got a problem with what Rep. Lewis said... Take it up with John Lewis.

By McCain refusing to look at Obama in the first debate and calling him "that one" in the second, it gave the racists permission to display their assholery in public at McCain rallies.

Why can't people call Obama all sorts of names and threaten death on him?

Why SHOULDN'T they disrespect him? After all, McCain disrespected him to his face TWICE.

If McCain is a decent person, he'd FORCEFULLY say "Violence and disrespect will NOT be tolerated."

I posted about this video yesterday after seeing it on Crooks & Liars. It is so horrifying that I couldn't stand to watch another second of it. I am scared. It is sickening and so discouraging to see so much hate in this day. It was a scene straight out of the Civil Rights Era! If anything happens to Senator Obama because of the frenzy whipped up by John McCain and that ignorant hate ranting Sarah Palin, I am holding them responsible!

My husband and I had dinner last night with my mother-in-law, who's in a retirement center with 200 other senior citizens.

She and two others are voting Obama. The rest of those doddering fools, sitting there with their safety nets of Social Security and Medicare, are voting for McCain. Why? Play the Sidewalk video and there you are.

New rule: If you're a senior citizen living on SOCIALISM by way of Social Security and Medicare, and you vote for McCain? You lose.

I know you get them from all over, so maybe ya'll should think about putting a collection them in some sort of file on the website so that we could link to them, or share them with other peeps who may not view the websites. I love sending them to family and friends who are not as obssessed as I am about politics. I've found that the pics (and videos) hits them harder than articles that most of them won't even read. As they say, a pictures says a 1000 words.

General Motors And Chrysler Discuss Merger



General Motors is in preliminary talks about a possible merger with Chrysler, a deal that could drastically remake the landscape of the auto industry by reducing the Big Three of Detroit automakers to the Big Two.

The talks between G.M. and Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns Chrysler, began more than a month ago, and the negotiations are not certain to produce a deal. Two people close to the process said the chances of a merger were "50-50" as of Friday and would most likely still take weeks to work out.

GM has been a stone's throw away from bankruptcy for a while now. Thing is, in many perverse ways, bankruptcy would help the company. For the market share that GM has, they have way too many brands and way too many dealers. Both the brands part and the dealers part are inseparable--the dealers have a huge lobby of their own and franchise law support from their individual states. Largely because of contracted obligations to dealers, it cost GM over $1 billion just to shut down the Oldsmobile brand--money that they don't have to axe un-needed brands like Buick, Pontiac, SAAB, or the practically offensive Hummer line.

Chrysler, now a private company with fewer brands, isn't much better. They have a line of middling, gas slugging vehicles in both the Chrysler and Dodge brands, and the Jeep line is full of SUVs. Forget about hybrids, none of the Chrysler Corp. brands have a small car that gets good gas mileage. Just like GM and Ford, they relied too heavily on truck and SUV sales and didn't reinvest those profits into cars. Add the contraction in personal credit, and you've got disaster on the way.

Merger, bankruptcy, or whatever, if you're a Big 3 employee who's still fortunate to have a job: Pay off your house, put away some money for college (for your family AND yourself), and polish up your resume. The next few years ain't gonna be pretty.

The global financial meltdown has caused a dramatic shift in the 2008 presidential race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. With four weeks left in the presidential campaign, Barack Obama now leads John McCain by double digits, 52 percent to 41 percent among registered voters--a marked shift from the last NEWSWEEK poll, conducted one month ago, when the two candidates were tied at 46 percent.

Underlying Obama's surge in support: An historic boiling over of dissatisfaction with the status quo. An astounding 86 percent of voters now say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, while a mere 10 percent say they are satisfied. That's the highest wrong track/right track ratio ever recorded in the NEWSWEEK poll.

Sen. John McCain's wife and father-in-law continued a lucrative business partnership with disgraced financier Charles H. Keating Jr. for 11 years after the GOP presidential nominee said he ended his close friendship with Keating in March 1987.

"Economists For McCain" Trash McCain's New Mortgage Plan

Many of the professional economists who formally endorsed John McCain's economic plan are expressing bewilderment with his most recent proposal to rectify the home mortgage crisis.

In interviews with the Huffington Post, roughly a dozen of McCain's economist supporters said they disagreed with the Senator's recent proposal -- for the government to buy distressed mortgages at face value from banks and renegotiate them with homeowners. Several viewed it as a gimmick, driven mostly by political circumstance. Only one pro-McCain economist spoke up in favor of the plan.

"This is just political gamesmanship," said Robert H. Heidt, a professor at the Indiana University School of Law. "The bill is wildly over-ambitious in trying to rescue home buyers from the downturn in real estate appreciation. It's costs would never end. I will end up voting for McCain but this is ridiculous."

The Gist of the ACORN Story

The Republican party is grasping on to the ACORN story as a way to delegitimize what now looks like the probable outcome of the November election. It is also a way to stoke the paranoia of their base, lay the groundwork for legal challenges of close outcomes in various states and promote new legal restrictions on legitimate voting by lower income voters and minorities. The big picture is that these claims of 'voter fraud' are themselves a fraud, a tool to aid in suppressing Democratic voter turnout. But I want give readers a bit more detail to understand what is going because the right-wing freak out about ACORN happens pretty much on schedule every two years. The whole scam is premised on having enough people who don't remember when they tried it before who they can then confuse and lie to. And this is clearly important because I'm hearing from a lot of people whose heart is in the right place thinking some real voter fraud conspiracy has been uncovered and that Obama has to distance himself from it post-haste.

Who's going to see the Oliver Stone movie on Dubya?

Oliver Stone made "JFK" and we haven't stopped talking about who killed Kennedy.

He was on Bill Maher last night and basically said he made the movie to show all of America what W was really like.

They were in the same class at Yale - only Stone dropped out to enlist and go to Vietnam, while W dodged service all together.

I'll probably catch a matinee - cause I expect him to do with "W" what he did with "JFK".

I saw a funny newspaper review blurb about this movie that I thought was honest. They didn't really praise or deride the movie for its artistic or entertainment value...they just wondered why Stone would make the film in the first place, and moreover, wondered who would go see it. One one hand, the people that like 'W' would hate the film and bash it mercilessly, mostly on hearsay. On the other hand, the people that hate W would probably already know 'what happens' from experience, and wouldn't want to sit through it again.

ME. I have got to see W.
