A black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics
Country first.
Proven leader.
Right.
From the Washington Post
Worse, Palin’s routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, “Sit down, boy.”
Update from HuffPo: today Palin supporters yelled “Treason!” in reference to Obama.
I’ve been having it out in the comments of my previous post with a regular here at JJP named “D” who says this is just “idiots shooting off at the mouth.” He, and no doubt many others, believe that McCain and Palin cannot be held accountable for what their supporters say.
Really? Even if those supporters are right in front of them? Even if the statements are made at an official campaign rally?
Everything we need to know about John McCain and Sarah Palin is summed up by their reaction to these incidents. Their positions on health care no longer matter. Their tax policies are irrelevant. Their talking points made moot. Not only do they bring out the worst in people, but they feed the worst in people. They are basing their campaign on painting Obama as a terrorist and monster. They are cultivating prejudice, racism, fear and ugliness.
America has been down this path before, and it is the exact opposite of what this country needs right now.
History awaits moments like these. We are on the brink. When a society’s pent up frustration and anger searches for an outlet, it is a leader’s job to step up and focus those wild emotions away from destruction and toward something productive. At least that is what a good leader would do.
A true leader would stop their politicking for a moment to remind the crowd that we are all Americans, that a sitting U.S. Senator is not a terrorist, that calls for murder have no place in a democracy because we work out our differences through debate and argument and law.
A true leader would recognize the pain ripping through his or her people and would seek to comfort them and then inspire them. A true leader would empathize with his or her people and then ask the nation to rise above our baser instincts, to come together as we’ve done before.
A true leader would lift his or her people up, not prey on their fears, their insecurities, their ignorance and their anger.
John McCain and Sarah Palin are not fit to lead this country. They have seized on a terrified populace and encouraged terror. This way leads to war, to hate, to self-destruction.
We can be a better nation than this, and we deserve better leaders than these.
If this bothers you, please do something.
Update: I have a version of this post up on Huffington Post.

My first thought was how can McCain use a slogan “Country First” and then descend into behavior that will divide us from within. Surely he can't be considering the consequences of his campaign should he win by using racism and McCarthy like tactics. It is deeply saddening to read Dana Milbank's article in the Washington Post. Not only “sit down boy” but someone in the crowd yelledd “kill him” after Palin got her crowd angry enough after attacking Sen. Obama of “pallin” around with terrorists.
McCain doesn't have a conscience. I'm sick of the media tip toeing around this nasty man.

I'm sure if an Obama supported shouted that Palin was a “bitch” right in front of him on live television, “D” and his ilk would call for his head. I'm sure they would be just as understanding if Michelle Obama were a card-carrying member of a group that advocated seceding from the U.S.
Also – You would think the Secret Service would be looking for the nut who shouted “Kill him!” at the Palin rally.

Clinton) “D” and his ilk would call for his head. I'm sure they would be just as understanding if Michelle Obama were a card-carrying member of a group that advocated seceding from the U.S.
“D” should try attending a McCain or Palin rally – alone – and see how it works out for him as a Black man.

That is the best summation of what I have seen and heard in the last few days. I know it's trite, but if you read random blogs/posts where people can be anonymous, it is SCARY how people still think.

So true. McCain couldn't have been thinking “Country First” when he picked a nitwit as a running mate, who went to 5 Colleges in 6 years, someone who can't put a coherent sentence together, someone who takes 4 days to come up with a news source and then blame the media for asking hard questions and have the gall to put her on the same level as a Harvard Law Graduate. GTFOH!

An opinion about what's at stake:
A reader writes:
What this horrible McCain/Palin campaign is doing is reminiscent of the worst of the 1930’s. Whipping uneducated, mindless acolytes into a violent – perhaps literally – frenzy, stirring fear and playing our citizens against themselves and each other. We’ve seen ‘journalism’ in Sean Hannity broadcast a disgusting and totally false propaganda hit piece in furtherance of this movement. We’ve even recently seen a quasi-nationalization of our main business – credit – much like what happened 70+ years ago.
I’ve never been an alarmist nor someone to lean towards the melodramatic, but am I wrong in feeling as though our governmental system and very freedom could be at stake in the coming weeks? This terrifies me, and has prompted me to act.
I have faith in the American people. They'll see through this to what we need, and make the best choice available. They made the right choice in the 1930s, unlike many other nations. They will make the right choice again. If I didn't have that faith, I wouldn't have the hope I feel.
The only response to this fear-mongering is hope-mongering, a pride in America's resilience, a confidence in her inventiveness, and a determination to get to the ballot box. This is not an election you can sit out. This is an election where we all have to take a stand, including the press. Too much is in peril for a false neutrality.

Its not only purile racist violence-inducing speech – its slander. Why is no one in the media (but Keith Olbermann) holding McCain and Palin accountable for their behavior? I must say, I find the recent focus of the McCain campaign – trying to convince America that Obama is a scary black terrorist – extremely frightening. Not because I think it will work – I don't. I'm more concerned because over the next 30 days all the racist looneys given voice by McCain/Palin will come to fore. I am disturbed.

The closer this election gets the nastier McCain/Palin will be. They will whip up their bigoted supporters with slogans like “Who is Obama?” or “Can he be trusted?”
What we have to do is raise above it all and let the McCain/Palin ticket sink themselves. Independants which is the largest group of voters are jumping off the Republican ship and sideing with Obama because of such campaign tricks.
So let them be so they can ruin not only the Republican party but also their future in politics

You are absolutely right! McCain and Palin both need to be held accountable for ingiting the fear and hate at these rallies. Honestly. These rallies look like watching David Duke in drag. I'm sick. So sick with disgust. And “D”, you have to realize that when McCain and Palin behave as stokers and then bystanders to hate and intolerance they are opening the door for the most sinister evil to find free romping room. I want the MSM to boycott these rallies. Their behavior, while protected by rights to free speech, in neither patriotic nor American. AND that makes them UNFIT to lead.

Granted, this happened in London, but that hate is coming to a black person near you. Black people will be held responsible if Obama wins, and if Joe Six Pack can't get at Obama, no prob, he'll just take it out on the nearest black person. This is why McCain and Palin's rhetoric is dangerous and needs to be called out, just like Hillary Clinton's “well we all know what happened in June 1968 *wink wink*” was called out.

Ha! I wonder if this is how the political climate was in the decades preceeding the Civil War (in terms of an Us versus Them mentality). If we do not get over this red state/blue state BS and come together as a country we will be heading towards something more dangerous in the future. This week should make it clear for anyone with common sense that McCain is not what is best for the country. While the economy appears to be taking a nose dive without a parachute, McCain wants to call Obama a terrorist and play up the racism that is burried so deep within main stream America. Yeah, that's the kind of change we need….pfffft!

6.5 Police officers shall:

I agree with D. They cannot be held accountable for what their supporters say. Should we hold Obama accountable for the inappropriate remarks Ludacrise made on his record? I think not.
BUT, you are right about McCain-Palin's lack of response and reprimand to their supporters when they publicly say those nasty things. They are coming off as non-chalant and not shutting those folks down is sending a bad message.
I saw Jack's posting on facebook book of a man calling Obama a Terrorist in front of McCain & McCain saying nothing. Looking at that video it seems like McCain didn't really register what the guy said. it was a bit muddled and the crowd was already lound and rowdy. I wager McCain either didn't hear it or registered it late. Either way, I don't want a leader who comes off as letting things like that slide.

What McCain and Palin are doing now makes the Clinton campaign look tame. It occurs to me that they are “legitimizing” putting Obama's life in danger by pushing this nonsense. The first potential Black President is always going to have that problem, hell Bush had people trying to take him out, I'm sure, but this is really raising the threat level.
Saying your opponent is unfit is one thing, suggesting that he is a evil, a friend of terrorists and a danger to the United States is something else entirely.

This, ladies and gentlemen, pulls the cloak off of the republicants and shows you just what lurks in the shadows of our great nation. The arrogance of John McCain: presenting a racist, narrow-minded, dingbat hack as a viable candidate for VP and the shame of those who actually tasted the s* burger and claimed it has a nice, familiar flavor-even like mom used to make. I honestly believe that the majority of America has progressed beyond the hopes of that cult and are repulsed by the idea of being represented to the world by a person who is actually more dangerous to our country than Osama Bin Laden. To be attacked by your enemy is expected. To be systematically subverted and cautiously destroyed by your own team members is an evil betrayal, the smell of which should not be tolerated. She has the seed of totalitarianism all in her. And she's ignorant of the damage she is doing. There is no more vile a creature than one that would destroy its own. Sarah Palin would destroy 75 % of the country just to be applauded by 10%. John McCain is the warlock looking on in approval. Reminds me of Lord of the Rings. Naw, some other sci fi flick. Unfortunately, this is real. Hurry up folks, sink McCaint's navy before it makes it to harbor.

The Republicans are in full meltdown mode. For years they've been presenting themselves as the party of grownups, of responsibility, of maturity and reasoned, sane governance.
It's always been a false front, but in the face of the disaster their leadership has wrought, they're scrambling around like rats in a corn bin.
That McCain ~ the great war hero, the defender of the United States ~ would tolerate this kind of crap is unconscionable. Palin is nothing but a redneck rabble rouser whose sole purpose is to incite the kind of angry emotion that has too often led this nation to violence in the past. Shame on her.
And shame on John McCain. The destruction of the myth of the man is a wonder to behold and underneath the mask he is despicable. I expect he's always been despicable and we were as seduced by the myth, as he was.
There is no excuse for him not to have addressed this with his audience. The truth is that he revels in the kind of naked hatred he is inciting in his followers. How disgusting. How tragic. And what a stark contrast he is to Barack Obama. Increasingly, I'm hearing Republicans express grave concerns about McCain and and intent to vote for Obama because he is steady, calm, possessing of great dignity, and a shining intellect.

ok where does one start… First of all do you ever think about whats said behind closed doors? There have already been statements made that palin called Obama 'sambo' which is completely derrogatory. If that slipped out then you know worse has definately been said. There is a complete double standard here that alleged statement got brushed under the rug like many other things.. If Obama called mccain a cracker honky all hell would break lose.
I am a very liberal caucasion woman who happened to have the opportunity and priveledge in life to know many different people from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and i know there are many more like me out there. That being said why do 'White People' have this fear that if a black man becomes president he will only help his people? I heard this on NPR a southern white woman scared he would “only help them”
Is there really an us and them still? Or can we just help people. We need to stop denying the fact that there is racism within the Republican party. How long did it take Bush to address the NAACP? just some things we need to ask ourselves…

I don't know how anyone could NOT see that the Palin/McCain strategy (and I use that order deliberately) is to raise the energy of white supremacy.
White supremacy is unfortunately part of the core of this nation and it is part of what protects it (or in some cases, tries to protect it) from certain kinds of change. A Barack Obama presidency threatens this piece, and not only because he himself is not white (though that's part of it).
Palin and McCain are clearly calling on white supremacy to help them. It is extremely obvious to me that this is what they're doing. Hillary Clinton did a similar thing but in a far more muted manner. This is what his opponents do.
The Republicans in general, and Palin/McCain in particular, are clearly telling this country that they cannot compete in this race without the strong assistance of white supremacy. They can't act, can't be, can't do without it. They are telling this country that they need the support of white supremacy in order to continue their run.
It's glaringly obvious to me.
I don't know how anyone could make the argument that they “cannot be held responsible” for what their supporters are saying when it is clear that Palin's actions are clearly and obviously designed to invoke and call on the energy of white supremacy.
I mean, sure, plausible deniability and all, that's the name of the game, but really this is not difficult to see. People who say they don't see it are likely playing games IMO.

It's their rally. They organized it. Paid for it. Managed it.
Ultimately, they are responsible for anything that happens at it.
If the debate moderator can tell the crowd that they can't clap, or make any untoward outburts, surely a candidate can tell a crowd they MUST not shout hate speech or violent utterances.
If those people continue to incite violence, the candidate must ensure that they are removed from the event.
You organize a public gathering, you are responsible for the behavior of those who attend.
It's really that simple.

I think Urban raises one valid point – how long ago was it that some of us were complaining about how stupid it was of Barack to apologize for every stupid thing a supporter said. Every week someone was complaining that he was throwing someone under the bus.
However, in general many of those comments were simply in poor taste and disrespectful. The comments Palin luvers are throwing out are dangerous becuase some sick person will use it as amunition and their silence will be considered tactical consent to pursue their sick dreams.

McCain couldn't “do what he do” without being aided and abetted by others.
For example, tonight McCain will “win” the debate because IMO Tom Brokaw will choose questions favorable to McCain and unfavorable to Obama.
Brokaw will then allow McCain chance after chance to defend himself, while cutting Obama off.
The MSM will then proclaim that McCain got his groove back and Obama is slipping.
The only way McCain will lose tonight is if he loses control and his good buddy Brokaw is not going to let that happen.
McCain gets away with stuff because other people let him get away with it.

Palin's nomination itself is a nod to white supremacy. They are openly saying that someone who barely graduated college, who has a thin resume, who doesn't read, who is ignorant about the world outside of her little space and a governor of a sparsely populated state is the equivalent to a black person with degrees from Ivy League schools, 10+ years of legislative experience, a record of helping the people and a US Senator.
Basically saying Mary Ann with a HS diploma and 5 years experience as a part time receptionist is equivalent in experience and stature to LaTonya, who has a masters' degree and 10 years experience being the assistant manager. And that Mary Ann should be promoted to district manager over LaTonya just cuz.

Who said her daughther was a whore? If anything, Palin herself pimp'd out her own daughther's 'situtation' at that convention – that includes this upcoming shot gun wedding.
Typical white woman PALES in comparison to suggesting someone being assassinated, or being called a terrorist or uppity or even being accused of treason.

Yea I remember that flick….remember when the white guy said about Don Cheadle character, 'how come he gotta piano, I ain't got no piano…”
Change the word 'piano' with 'education', 'success', 'money' and any other accomplishment Obama has made.

This isn't merely something somebody said. These are people threatening VIOLENCE against another person.
This isn't “Obama got black lips and funny ears!”
This is “KILL HIM!”
And this isn't somebody saying this somewhere else and it got back to McCain and Palin. These are people saying this at their rallies where they can hear it.
Why not say, “Hey, I know you're excited, but let's cool it on that kind of talk, let's be the bigger person” when somebody shouts out KILL HIM?

Town: I agree.
And also IMO — the fact that they would compare the VP candidate (chosen by the McCain campaign with no accountability to the voters and nothing she did to make it happen) to the Pres candidate (chosen by the people in the primaries in a hard long fight that he directed/was in charge of) is part of that too, for me at least.

MSNBC's David Schuster is bringing up the “kill him” comments to a McCain talking head saying it is unacceptable. Her response, she hasn't talked to McCain but yes it is unacceptable like Ayers did unacceptable things. After the Schuster mentally rolled his eyes he did continue to go on about how the campaign should not be promoting, encouraging or supporting this behavior.
So one main stream outlet has this issue on it's talking point sheet.

Exactly Town.
The media as a whole has aided McCain's despicable campaign.
They constantly played that dumb ass Paris Hilton/Britney Spears ad mocking Obama and discussed it for a whole week.
They jumped the chance to continually discuss McCain's false accusation of Obama playing the race card and did that for an entire week.
They devoted an entire week for the ludicrous “lipstick in a pig” fiasco generated by the McCain campaign.
And throughout this entire campaign season, they told viewers that “The American people just don't know who Barack Obama is.”
It is shameful. It is disgusting. And for the most part, the media is a joke and McCain is calling the shots.

Feds to look into Sheriff Scott's comment at Palin rally
A federal investigation is being opened into the actions and comments of Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott at a rally for Gov. Sarah Palin in Estero on Monday.
Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney at the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, wrote in to complainant Carl Spackler that due to his complaint, her office will be investigating under the Hatch Act, which governs political activities of certain elected officials.
The complainant stated the sheriff violated that act because the sheriff’s office receives federal money, engaged in political activity while on duty, engaged in political activity while in uniform, wore political buttons while on duty and used political influence or authority to interfere with an election.

You're a blatant liar! No one here called Sarah Palin's daughter a whore. There is a double standard when it comes to young black girls getting pregnant out of wedlock. When young black girls get pregnant out of wedlock, they are called Welfare Queens, Undisciplined, Immoral,& Lacking Responsibility. Sarah Palin's unwed pregnant daughter wasn't called any of those names . Can you say….White Privilege?! Sarah Palin shouldn't have paraded her pregnant unmarried daughter on stage during the Republican Convention and then profess to promote family values. That's total hypocrisy!

The only thing I disagree with in Michelle's comment is that white supremacy is part of the core of this nation — yes it is but I also believe it's possible to purge it. Not with just one election, but I don't believe it's a permanent feature of our nation. If I did, I would just give up now. I think we can — slowly, incrementally, over time — change it.

Please, stop — it's not “representative” of this country. Obama is ahead in all the polls. There are many many decent people in our country, and I didn't believe that, and didn't believe that we can change, and didn't believe that we can forgive, and didn't believe that we can redeem ourselves, then I would be forced to give up HOPE.
Obama is WINNING. We are watching the DEATH THROES of the McPain campaign. The fact that they are stooping this low is VICTORY, even if their acts are worthy of our CONDEMNATION.

The Palins' un-American activities
Imagine if the Obamas had hooked up with a violently anti-American group in league with the government of Iran.
By David Talbot
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, at a rally in Vienna, Ohio, on Sept. 16, 2008.
Oct. 7, 2008 | “My government is my worst enemy. I'm going to fight them with any means at hand.”
This was former revolutionary terrorist Bill Ayers back in his old Weather Underground days, right? Imagine what Sarah Palin is going to do with this incendiary quote as she tears into Barack Obama this week.
Only one problem. The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that's the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. (”Keep up the good work,” Palin told AIP members. “And God bless you.”)

AIP chairwoman Lynette Clark told me recently that Sarah Palin is her kind of gal. “She's Alaskan to the bone … she sounds just like Joe Vogler.”
So who are these America-haters that the Palins are pallin' around with?
Before his strange murder in 1993, party founder Vogler preached armed insurrection against the United States of America. Vogler, who always carried a Magnum with him, was fond of saying, “When the [federal] bureaucrats come after me, I suggest they wear red coats. They make better targets. In the federal government are the biggest liars in the United States, and I hate them with a passion. They think they own [Alaska]. There comes a time when people will choose to die with honor rather than live with dishonor. That time may be coming here. Our goal is ultimate independence by peaceful means under a minimal government fully responsive to the people. I hope we don't have to take human life, but if they go on tramping on our property rights, look out, we're ready to die.”
This quote is from “Coming Into the Country,” by John McPhee, who traipsed around Alaska's remote gold mining country with Vogler for his 1991 book. The violent-tempered secessionist vowed to McPhee that if any federal official tried to stop him from polluting Alaska's rivers with his earth-moving equipment, he would “run over him with a Cat and turn mosquitoes loose on him while he dies.”
Vogler wasn't just a blowhard either. He put his secessionist ideas into action, working to build AIP membership to 20,000 — an impressive figure by Alaska standards — and to elect party member Walter Hickel as governor in 1990.
Vogler's greatest moment of glory was to be his 1993 appearance before the United Nations to denounce United States “tyranny” before the entire world and to demand Alaska's freedom. The Alaska secessionist had persuaded the government of Iran to sponsor his anti-American harangue.
That's right … Iran. The Islamic dictatorship. The taker of American hostages. The rogue nation that McCain and Palin have excoriated Obama for suggesting we diplomatically engage. That Iran.
AIP leaders allege that Vogler, who was murdered that year by a fellow secessionist, was taken out by powerful forces in the U.S. before he could reach his U.N. platform. “The United States government would have been deeply embarrassed,” by Vogler's U.N. speech, darkly suggests Clark. “And we can't have that, can we?”
The Republican ticket is working hard this week to make Barack Obama's tenuous connection to graying, '60s revolutionary Bill Ayers a major campaign issue. But the Palins' connection to anti-American extremism is much more central to their political biographies.
Imagine the uproar if Michelle Obama was revealed to have joined a black nationalist party whose founder preached armed secession from the United States and who enlisted the government of Iran in his cause? The Obama campaign would probably not have survived such an explosive revelation. Particularly if Barack Obama himself was videotaped giving the anti-American secessionists his wholehearted support just months ago.
Where's the outrage, Sarah Palin has been asking this week, in her attacks on Obama's fuzzy ties to Ayers? The question is more appropriate when applied to her own disturbing associations.

pjamma: Just watched it 2!! That B*@ with the WHITE GENE even put the “Ayers matter” back in the '60's, YET she yelled so passionately AS IF it occurred RECENTLY!!
That's some HATIN'
BUT, IFFFF she wants to go back to the '60's, THEN pul-eeze permit me ta BRING SOME DATA FROM THE 1960's:
1. http://countrystudies.us/united-states/history-...
2. Black folks were STILL STRUGGLING FOR EQUALITY!!
3. Black folks were forced [by the inequality and hatred of WHITE FOLKS] to form organizations to combat RACISM – perpetuated by WHITE FOLKS!!
[C.O.R.E., SNCC, SCLC, etc.
4. The system of overt, state-sanctioned racial discrimination and oppression that emerged out of the post-Reconstruction South and spread nation-wide became known as the "Jim Crow" system, and it remained virtually intact into the early 1950s. Systematic disenfranchisement of African Americans took place in Southern states at the turn of the century and lasted until national civil rights legislation was passed in the mid-1960s. For more than 60 years, they were not able to elect one person in the South to represent their interests. Because they could not vote, they could not sit on juries limited to voters. They had no part in the justice system or law enforcement, although in the 1880s, they had held many local offices, including that of sheriff.
Characteristics:
* Racial segregation. By law, public facilities and government services such as education were divided into separate and unequal "white" and "colored" domains.
* Disenfranchisement. When White American Democrats regained power, they passed laws that made voter registration more complicated. Black voters were forced off the voting rolls, and the number of African-Americans elected to office decreased. From 1890 to 1908, Southern states of the former Confederacy created constitutions with provisions that disfranchised most African Americans and, in many cases, poor White Americans.
* Exploitation. Increased economic oppression of blacks, Latinos, and Asians, denial of economic opportunities, and widespread employment discrimination.
* Violence. Individual, police, organizational, and mass racial violence against blacks (and Latinos in the Southwest and Asians in California).
7. 1963 - 200,00+ Black Folks [and sympathetic OTHERS] held a “MARCH ON WASHINGTON” in order to bring the concept of RACISM to the “attention” of the FEDS. {Guess “they” didn't know about what “they” were doing! Par For the course!}
8. Black Folks [and society , in general] witnessed the ASSISSINATION of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy & Sen, Robert Kennedy!
9. BLACK FOLKS were DENIED ADMISSIONS to certain Colleges/universities [e.g. James Meridith - University of Miss. - 1962} He had to be ESCORTED to school by FEDERAL TROOPS!!
`10. BLACK FOLKS were the VICTIMS of HORRENDOUS ACTS OF VIOLENCE - churches were bombed, houses were burned/bombed, crosses were burned on lawns, Emmett Louis "Bobo" Till (July 25, 1941 – August 28, 1955) was a black fourteen year old from Chicago, Illinois who was murdered [1] in Money, Mississippi, a small town in the state's Delta region. The murder of Emmett Till was noted as one of the leading events that motivated the nascent American Civil Rights Movement.[1] The main suspects were acquitted, but later admitted to committing the crime.
11. 1964 – The Civil Rights Act had to be legislated in order to bring BLACK FOLKS some RELIEF!!
12. 1965–The Voting Rights Act continues to be violated by WHITE FOLKS under the “new concept” of the VOTER SUPPRESSION of BLACK FOLKS!!
13. 1968 –Congress had ta take time out of its BUSY SCHEDULE in order to pass legislation BANNING DISCRIMINATION IN HOUSING against BLACK FOLKS!!
There is soooomuch more!! [Please feel free to add - ALL Y'ALL!]
SOOO, WHITE WOMAN — DID YOU FORGET ALL of THIS while you are trying to “RECONSTRUCT” what Mr. Ayers did and with whom he did it!??
This is a rhetorical question, so I'll answer it!! NO YOU DIDN'T
You just hoped that we have gotten “OVER IT!”
WELL, WE DID NOT!!
So, the next time that YOU want to “take that trip down MEMORY LANE”, DON'T let me HAVE to remind you what was happening to BLACK FOLKS at YOUR HANDS!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmR1YvfIGng
WE Shall Overcome [Some Day]
As long as people like YOU, “McAncient/The Gov.” EXIST, —–
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!! And it's 2008, in case you want to “DO THE MATH!!”
WHEW!!! REASONABLE RANTING DEEP BREATHS!!!

7. 1963 - 200,000+ Black Folks [and sympathetic OTHERS] held a “MARCH ON WASHINGTON” in order to bring the concept of RACISM to the “attention” of the FEDS. {Guess “they” didn't know about what “they” were doing! Par For the course!}
So, the next time that YOU want to “take that trip down MEMORY LANE”, DON'T let me HAVE to remind you what was happening to BLACK FOLKS at YOUR HANDS!!!

baratunde: Thanks, again, for “bringin' this!”
I brought this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech
Hate Speech
Hate speech is a term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against a person or group of people based on their race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language ability, moral or political views, socioeconomic class, occupation or appearance (such as height, weight, and hair color), mental capacity and any other distinction-liability. The term covers written as well as oral communication and some forms of behaviors in a public setting. It is also sometimes called antilocution and is the first point on Allport's scale which measures prejudice in a society. Critics have claimed that the term “Hate Speech” is a modern example of Newspeak, used to silence critics of social policies that have been poorly implemented in a rush to appear politically correct[1][2][3].
Legal aspects
In the United States, government is broadly forbidden by the First Amendment of the Constitution from restricting speech. Jurists generally understand this to mean that the government cannot regulate the content of speech, but that it can address the harmful effects of speech through laws such as those against defamation or incitement to riot.
The fact that such laws apply only to the victimization of specific individuals has led to disputes regarding how such laws should be regulated, if they are to be regulated at all. Among those who hold that hate speech must be regulated, it is undecided as to whether hate speech should be regulated by the state or by voluntaristic communities. Criticisms of hate speech regulation include the view that such legislation would be unjust to those with controversial political or social views.
Where such laws exist they are limited by the constitutional rights to freedom of expression. For example, the German constitution is more restrictive, guaranteeing 'freedom of voicing one's opinion' and elsewhere restricts its misuse against the public peace. The German Criminal Code specifically forbids inciting hatred against ethnic groups, and revisionism, as in France under the Gayssot Act, is prohibited on those grounds.
An alternative to legal regulation or criminalization of speech, particularly in jurisdictions such as the United States that extend broad protection to the content of speech, is the use of tort law to pursue Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress (IIED) claims against those accused of hate speech. Law and precedent concerning intentional torts and the necessary elements which establish liability in an IIED claim place limits on when such a claim may arise.
THERE IS MORE.

This isn't just about Barack's safety.
It's about MINE.
Y'all know, did I tell you, when Barack was announced our nominee by acclimation that one of our black delegates received an email from a nutjob who said he was going to kill all the black people in Maine. Secret service got right on it and the man was arrested.
I love Maine. Have never had any major problems. Who woulda thought that a presidential election when the first black president could be elected would turn into a situation that could make me feel unsafe in my own house?
What these Nazis are doing is criminal and they should all be held to account for their hate.

- using Cheney's own type of language about him (post-Katrina visit, I think, white guy told the VP what he thought of him, got hauled off by police? – don't have details)

Humans in groups do things that they would “never do” calmly thinking by themselves, we KNOW this. McCain and Palin are acting in an unconscionable way.

I saw a preview of it. I am planning to pick it up. Sounds intriguing.
The media's talking points always include ” McCain, we know him, POW, honorable” and Obama'” mythical character, vague biography, what does he really believe”. This is the logic they use as they justify why they are harder on Obama. Funny thing is, I did not know much about Keating Five, I did not know McCain was not shot down but rather crashed the plane that led him into captivity (and many before it), that he graduated fifth from the bottom of his class, and what a snake he is, etc. I think many in the electorate are like me, we only know the mythology of John McCain. A politician who seemed like a decent guy from his appearanes on Jay Leno. I guess the joke was on me.
If the media was doing half their job, they would be asking who “is the real John McCain”? And while they are it, who is his sidekick that pals around with members of an organization whose mission is secessation from the US.

It is funny. I have never worn any obama paraphernalia. I think it comes from years staying in the deep south. We need to be conscious of our surroundings and conscientious of our speech around the “others”. I don't wear my Obama in my sleeve, and I feel it in my heart. Screw these damn people. Hate to sound so morbid, but it may actually be a reality.

It is funny. I have never worn any obama paraphernalia. I think it comes from years staying in the deep south. We need to be conscious of our surroundings and conscientious of our speech around the “others”. I don't wear my Obama in my sleeve, and I feel it in my heart. Screw these damn people. On a positive note, this bigotry shows those white folks who don't believe that racism still exists that it is alive well and in your damn face.

Exactly. This is what happens when nepotism and undeserved priviledge gets out of hand.
W must crush Palin's undeserved attention before we have another McCain. No wonder McCain felt such a connection with Palin. They shared the same spoiled behaviour (that worked for them) to attain undeserved success.
One would think McCain's time as a POW would quell his selfisness but to no avail.
She used her perceived attractiveness and he used his family to get ahead. Neither, pulled themselved up from their bootstraps to actually acheive earned success. They despise Obama, a man who has actually used intelligence, hard work, and common sense to succeed all without compromising greatly his own moral standards.

No I mean RAN, or are you too stupid to understand that? You liberals are all the same. You can say what ever you want about McCain and Pallin but don't dare say one word about Obama. In fact I could even cut Biden to the core and not a word would be said! Why? because he is white!!! Who the hell is the racist?
Also explain to me just how Sarah Pallin is leading a charge for a race riot! Tell me one thing she has said!? You can't because it's all lies! No matter what is said by anyone against your Obama will be racist to you!
Also I never said that anyone here said Pallin's daughter was a whore. Although if i dig deep enough I'm sure i will find it. My suggestion to you is to get out of this stupid blog and read other news and maybe you will find it.

Or maybe you should get the copy of Rosetta Stone for American English, not some liberal version for Europeans. Stop watching MSNBC and start watching real news on FOX NEWS!!!

Anderkoo, above you mentioned disagreement with me on my statement that white supremacy is part of the core of this nation. That's ok, we disagree.
But this is over the line — “Please, stop” in response to the statement from Rhondacoca about it being representative.
You wrote:
here are many many decent people in our country, and if I didn't believe that, and didn't believe that we can change, and didn't believe that we can forgive, and didn't believe that we can redeem ourselves, then I would be forced to give up HOPE.
I can't tell if you're making a threat here, or if you're just being extremely self-involved. Either way, I ask you to dial it down please (meaning: step back from the emotional drama and “Please stop” thing and speak it as a disagreement).

Fair enough Michelle, forgive me for indulging some drama in my language and phrasing. In no way did I intend to threaten anything. I am quite familiar with attitudes of white privilege and the harm that it has done to me and others, but at the same time I feel that the concept of hope opens to me the possibility that people can change and that where we've been is not where we have to be going. I don't mean to attack you, Rhondacoca, or others and apologize for giving off that sense or attitude. The last thing we need right now is to generate negativity around our strong feelings, and I'm sorry to do so.

No worries, Anderkoo, thanks for the reply.
that where we've been is not where we have to be going.
I do feel like something's shifting right now. For me the door into seeing it isn't hope, but I hear you when you say that's what opens it for you.

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if I'm drinking too much of the Kool-Aid, and for sure my mother-in-law worries I'm confusing Obama for Jesus. I'm not, but I do get a lot out of meditating over the idea of “hope” and why we so need it as a way out of the past. anyway, thanks for hearing me out, this can sometimes be a tough way to communicate because it's hard to get all the right emotion and it's easy to misread what we write without the affect.

I am a white woman who has campaigned for Obama in my neighborhood, because I am middle class and know he will help us.
Some of the comments made here are very polarizing. How dare you group me or Senator Clinton with the likes of Sarah Palin just because we are all white women. Newsflash – Obama is biracial and he is fighting for the white middle class as much as he is fighting for anyone else. My fear is that after working hard to get Obama and the Democrats to victory this November, I will still find myself the target of hatred by African Americans, even though you know full well that millions of white Americans voted for Obama. Again, how dare you reduce me to my race and anatomy and consider me interchangeable with despicable Republican Sarah Palin.
