Inauguration Inflation Underway at Washington Hotels

Thinking about heading to Washington for Inauguration Day? Get out your wallet … or bring a tent. Rates are stratospheric for the week of Jan. 20 for the few hotels that aren't yet booked.

At the Mayflower Hotel, the cheapest “inauguration special deluxe room” goes for $700 per night, prepaid, according to the hotel website. A week later, the same room costs $379 per night. The Ritz-Carlton near Georgetown starts at $899 per night and tops out at $7,000 for a “presidential” suite. Among the few D.C. hotels with rates under $500 per night: the Fairfield Inn on New York Ave. NE ($399 per night).

A bargain by comparison: The Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City — a short Metro ride to the Capitol — where rooms run $499 per night, prepaid, with a two-night minimum.

Beyond D.C.'s borders, the rates aren't much cheaper. Rooms at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Va., go for $549 per night, with a three-night minimum, according to the hotel website. The Hilton Alexandria Old Town starts at $469 per night. The Marriott Courtyard at Tyson's Corner, a 30-minute drive from the Capitol, runs $299 per night.

For those who want to walk, the Best Western Capitol Skyline still has space. The aging concrete structure near the Anacostia River is asking $631 per night, with a four-night minimum.

Right. And the other thing is how she basically is putting a minimum on the donations. Asking for $75.. LOL. Dosen't she know the power of nickle and dime donations?

“Mudstock” Report and Photos From Pittsburgh

On Friday, a group of devoted Mudflatters in the Pittsburgh area decided that they’d like to meet up, speak to each other in real audible words, enjoy each others physical company, and put a face, instead of a snowflake avatar, with the name. HamletsMill was the organizational brain behind this event and sent photos and a great story (see below).

Friday night’s Mini-Mudstock three hour event held at Rolands in the famous Strip District of Pittsburgh was a wonderful celebration of the amazing worldwide Mudflats phenomenon! We are sure many of you were there in spirit worldwide!

Eleven Mudpuppies and their MudGuests came to commiserate in person!

By professions identified, we had three lawyers, two university professors, a medical doctor, a nurse, a software engineer, an automotive structural engineer, and an architectural construction planner!

The dinner conversation was lively and the food was first rate!

We originally had thirteen signed up, but two had to cancel due to catching colds during the toxic spill evacuation in a town 40 miles north of Pittsburgh which made the national news earlier this week. (Hmmm. Was this a direct Rovian National Security conspiracy to affect our MudStock turnout?)

THIS IS GREAT! Alaska is going MAINSTREAM!!! Whoooo! Hooo! :>)

Texas_Girl_in_LA, my thing right now is trying to focus on the practical and minimize the drama as much as possible, if that makes sense. Like I just wrote in a dkos diary mentioning that death threat thing:

A recent rec'd diary described a family (or families) that had received death threats because of an Obama sign on their lawn.

My question would be, is there any way that we could assist in whatever needs thinking about or doing to help these families marshall support for their day to day well-being?

For example — this is just speculation on my part since I don't know the real neighborhood context it may not be practical and of course the real thing would be to be in communication with those families to try to get at what, if anything can be done, but … but thinking out loud here, what if volunteers from outside the area, or people from that area, or both, were to go door to door in that neighborhood talking to people about the death threat and asking them to help keep an eye out for the family/families that were threatened? Could there be a point of agreement among the majority of the neighbors that even thought there are differing politics, it is never appropriate to threaten people's lives like that?

I think from the comments I understand that the area this happened in is very Republican. But my suspicion is that most Republicans, no matter how strongly they might feel politically, would not feel it appropriate for someone to threaten their neighbors with death for having and displaying a political opinion. So, even though there are political differences, would it be possible for the people in that area to help look out for the safety of their neighbors — and if so what would need to happen to make that occur and what kind of help might be useful in making that happen?)…

[Overall] ….given how much energy there is on this site to talk about these incidents, do you think there would be any use to trying to make some sort of system or clearinghouse site or something that could focus on practical needs in a no-drama tone, something that could then pull assistance and resources from concerned people here

the O campaign keeps it's cards close to the vest. I been getting the feeling they are keeping track of all registrations completed by their volunteers. Also, it's clear they have extensive canvassing databases.

Then I read this diary. It's a man whose Hispanic wife didn't receive her mail in ballot. She also registered 1200 people, I take it they were Spanish speaking also. It's a good diary if you care to read it….but the thing I'm pointing to, it the bolded line(my emphasis) How would the O campaign know to do a robo call reminding her to fill out her ballot if they weren't keeping track of every supporter in minute detail??

The repub criminals won't know what hit them!

Among those registrations, was her own registration which was a change to permanent mail-in balloting. We became suspicious when a full three weeks after she filed her own registration she never received a mail-in ballot nor any kind of confirmation from the Secretary of State's office. All we did get was a robocall from Michelle Obama informing us that in a few days we would be receiving the mail-in ballot and to be sure that she fills it out and sends it in right away.

We took that as a sign that the campaign was aware that she had signed up for mail-in balloting and that the forms must have been processed by the campaign and turned in to the Secretary of State. We presume that this robocall would not have informed us with certitude that we would be receiving a mail-in ballot if it were simply a random call to voters.

Christopher Hitchens: McCain 'Losing Capacity', He's Just Not Quite The Man He Was

Christopher Hitchens defended his endorsement of Obama on The O'Reilly Factor on Friday. Subbing in for O'Reilly was Laura Ingraham, and the exchange (who would have thought!) got a bit heated at times. Ingraham was rather incredulous as to how Hitchens could support Obama. Hitchens responded that everything Obama has said since his first debate with Hillary Clinton “has been getting better.” Hitchens also, reluctantly, uttered rather harsh criticism of McCain:

“McCain is, in my judgment, I hate to have to say it of such a person, is losing height, losing capacity, he's just not quite the man he was. One proof of that, you might add, is his choice of running mate and potential vice president.”

What I wonder is, how can Obama supporters offer practical help to each other in these dangerous times — maximize the practical, minimize the drama, you know?

And, are there people who disagree with us politically, but still think things like what Texas Girl mentions below are over the line … and can we ask for their practical assistance too in some contexts?
