As a progressive, I have my issues with Obama. I think he has the potential to be a great president. At least, I was thrilled when he talked about reachign out to the rest of the world early on in his campaign. And when he stood up for undocumented immigrants (I'm an ESL teacher), I thought "This is something we haven't seen before: a politician who speaks out for the most disenfranchised people in our country. But, as a progressive, so it is disappointing to see him list to the right in recent months. But I read what you wrote and that clinched it. I voted for Obama a few days a few days after reading it. I am white, but I am not congratulating myself for this. Nor do I think that racism in America has gone the way of the Dodo bird simply because we are voting for a black president. In fact, I'm watching this election and I'm terrified that it will be stolen from us. And you've reminded me of why we can't let this happen. So I'm sending out an email to all my friends with the subject heading: Another Stolen Election? And if you don't mind, I'm going to refer to what you said in your blog...that is, the reason for your vote: for your beautiful little girl and your mother who lived through Jim Crow Mississippi - another shameful period in our history that's being revisited through vote suppression. And I'll refer people to this great article about all the African-Americans who are braving these long lines to vote. This is a great blog...I came back to it because I just voted recently. I can only imagine how the tears will flow---tears of joy! tears of hope!---when I get to go early-vote for Senator Obama in the general election. <br><br>A vote for Obama is a vote for a more hopeful America, a more progressive America, a more working-on-perfecting-our-Union America. I am so amazed at what ordinary people have accomplished, working so, so hard on behalf of Senator Obama's campaign. I love how it's truly not all about him. It's about us, about what we can accomplish together when we're willing to listen respectfully, speak respectfully and behave respectfully. He and MIchelle are so inspirational. I pray the sacrifices they have made will be worth it. I feel like I owe them a debt of gratitude already, and they haven't even moved to Pennsylvania Avenue.....yet! Beautiful baby!! My son is the product of an interracial partnership, like Obama, and I will not stand for setting a precedent that you can bring someone like my child down with racial attacks.
