I'm still in shock. I'm loving the posts by you, B-Serious, and Jill. I didn't think he'd do the right thing. Called out the Muslim bullshit. Called out Palin. Called out Country Last for being erratic.

If she wants to commit suicide and fade into political obscurity, she endorses Obama. If not, she shuts up and hauls ass out of DC after January 20, 2009.

Now, as to this endorsement being calculated? It's possible. Powell did donate to the McCain campaign, and his poll numbers aren't good. And as the Republican operative (too chicken to be named?) said, this could believably be interpreted as a 'gotcha' against President Bush and certain Republicans still in power. Yet I believe Colin Powell means it when he says, “The party has moved even further to the right, and Governor Palin has indicated a further rightward shift.”

But what really brings the endorsement home for me was Powell's concern for the Supreme Court. Powell has been a reliable supporter of affirmative action programs, and perhaps he senses McCain-appointed justices will interpret laws in ways that rip them up: “I would have a difficult time with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration.”

I now fully expect a new chapter of revisionism when Republicans recount the history of the current war in Iraq: “How It Was ALL Colin Powell's Fault”.

Color me pleasantly surprised.

I believe we are all capable of doing wrong and of being wrong. How we handle it is very important. His words this morning were elequent and harsh. He said what was needed to be said. At the end of the day, he strikes me as a tragic figure, how can you not have compassion for someone who was used by the times he lived, over and over again.

And, indeed he did. Even though these folk are trying to throw him under the bus, He'll still have his integrity and tact by finally telling His truth.

For me, more than anything, Colin redeemed himself, by speeking his truth.

Powell was thoughtful in his reasoning for endorsing Obama and showed courage in calling out the GOP on its swing to the far right and McCain's pick of Sarah Palin. But I thought his story about the Muslim soldier who gave his life in service to his country was very compelling.

Powell's timing could not have been better; I think if he had endorsed Obama earlier in the campaign it would have been much less effective. This endorsement is a heavy body blow to a campaign and candidate who are punch drunk from the last few days. It minimizes the effect of Palin appearing on SNL; it dominates the headlines for the next few days (i.e., keeps ACORN out of the headlines) and keeps the GOP on the defensive.

Powell may be flawed but I am not going to contribute to his demise, because life ain't easy for a brotha with or without scruples in the GOP and the military. Hell life ain't easy for a brotha period.

Powell is now a man without a country so to speak. Liberals hate him and will not forgive him because of his involvement with the selling of the war in Iraq and the GOP will now demonize him for his endorsement of Obama.

Some will say he is a shrewd politician, some will say he is a traitor to his country, some will say he is a racist and some will say he is basically a good man who his trying to find redemption.

Whatever you are General Powell, you have my thanks.
