Democrats cheered on Wednesday when news broke that John McCain's campaign was abandoning Michigan, pulling down its ads and sending staffers to other states.
Almost immediately, an organization called Progress Michigan let loose with a taunt, demanding that McCain keep pouring resources into the state in order to explain to voters his "support for outsourcing" and the "failed economic policies" of the Bush administration.
Many speculated that McCain would now turn his focus to Pennsylvania. But United Steelworkers International president Leo Gerard tells the Huffington Post that the state could soon go the way of Michigan.
"We're seeing -- from the several hundred of our people working every day, hand-billing at the plants -- the last two weeks have really been breaking Senator Obama's way," Gerard said over the phone from his office in Pittsburgh. "In particular, I think folks are sort of not taking John McCain as serious as they were, when they see his vacillation last week. 'I'm not going to debate. I'm going to whip House Republicans into shape. Not."
With a little help from friends, Mr. Obama may have McAncient on the run in PA!! :>)
(Newser) – Barack Obama has kept his cool while his rival hurls frantic Hail Mary passes—and that will be what wins him this election, Charles Krauthammer writes in the Washington Post. John McCain tempted fate one time too many with his campaign-suspension stunt, Krauthammer argues, leaving his rival—who did not distinguish himself in the crisis—looking calm and steady.
Obama realizes that to win this election he must simply pass the “Reagan threshold” of 1980: “Make yourself acceptable.” Reagan did so by proving he wasn’t a menace; Obama is winning votes with his continued calm and his slow drift towards the ordinary that began in Denver. "If Obama convinces the electorate that he is not too exotic or green or unprepared,” Krauthammer writes, “he wins.”

rikyrah: The Anchorage Daily News is keeping a "minute-by-minute" diary of this case! :>)
The Alaska Supreme Court has agreed to hear an emergency appeal from lawyers seeking to shut down the Legislature's Troopergate investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin.
The action comes the day after Anchorage Superior Court Judge Peter Michalski threw out their lawsuit attempting to halt the Legislature's investigation of what's known as Troopergate. The suit was filed on behalf of a group of Republican state legislators who oppose the investigation.
In a written order issued about 4:30 p.m. today, the Supreme Court said it would hear oral arguments on the appeal at 3 p.m. Wednesday, and agreed to rule by the end of the next Thursday. THERE IS MORE.

Next Thursday....wasn't that about the time they were going to release the findings of the investigation? I think I read Oct 10...
The criminals are trying to pin voter fraud on Barack Obama?
Someone needs to lock them all up.

this is because it's turned around, Craig. They can't do their dirty shit in the dark anymore. Sources all over the place are telling the truth on their asses. Got one today where those mofos are doing Voter Suppression in MONTANA
MONTANA
Now, you know we're not there, but it matters not to these loathesome creatures.
Did you read my post down below from 538.com and their comparison of field offices in Missouri.
Chuck Todd did a segment on Race for the White House, breaking down the Electoral College Math, and it showed the success of the 50 State Strategy. Obama has many baskets to 270....McCain, he has to bank a lot of wild shots in order to make it there.
The Crow Nation is in Montana, rikyrah. And they're planning to vote in droves this year. For Barack Black Eagle, adopted son.
The polls don't consider members of the Crow Nation. Not at all. Barack, who hasn't closed up shop in the state, can still win Montana and those trying to suppress their vote know it.
This from a union leader in Pennsylvania is for Truthseeker:
Gerard, for one, also thinks Obama is becoming more comfortable talking about kitchen table issues. His union originally endorsed John Edwards during the primary season. But even after their favored candidate abandoned the race, Gerard recounts that it took the union members several weeks to reach a consensus on Obama -- perhaps, as was widely guessed at the time, because his cool demeanor was not resonating with the white working class audience.
Now, though, Gerard says that perception is turning. "Obama seems to have become more passionate. He seems to be angry about what's gone on. I watched part of his speech [on Thursday]. That kind of speech could go to standing ovations in a union hall. If he can keep that up level of intensity, what I call constructive anger about what the system has done, I think that he'll connect. ... And McCain will wind up campaigning just in Georgia before it's over."

Hehe..
Thanks!
Everything's coming together. Biden was amazing in his debate, but didn't get his due in the commentary. He kicked the shit out of McCain, and O has been tapping into the economic rage.
Diane Sawyer just did her best to smear the Obamas in a sit-down portrait of the presidential candidates. I didn't see the whole episode, so I don't know what they reported about John McCain, but there was Wright in all his glory, followed up by Michelle's proud comment. Of course, Sawyer did it all as a "journalist" even as Michelle looked a bit perturbed that it was being brought up yet again in the interview.
He asks: "What B average college student couldn't do what Palin did last night?"
My girl Michelle Benard and Chris Cillizza didn't want to go there. Of course, Matthews was beating the hell out of the point (because somebody should have a long time ago and all night last night) and wasn't taking bs for an answer.
It is beyond ridiculous... I had a co-worker today who got the idea from somewhere that "Palin kicked azz" last night during the debate. As soon as I pressed the issue, the quick default was essentially (my favorite tell-tale sign from last night's crowd):

Let's put Joe Biden's very emotional moment last night, about his young sons' mortality into perspective, shall we?
Beau is going to Iraq today. From all accounts our beloved servicemen are still dying in Iraq. I'm not sure in what capacity Beau will serve, so therefore, I'm not sure he will be in harms way; but let's assume everyone that is deployed is vulnerable. By that logic, Beau may, MAY, God forbid, come back to the United States in a body bag, right? So, once again, last night, Joe Biden is faced with a reality where he may outlive one of his sons. This gut-wrenching moment is captured live and in-color. And that raging sociopath, Governor McBitch, couldn't even muster up something heartfelt to say before robotically launching off into her rehearsed bulls*t. God, I hate those GOP M*****fuckers.
So, this vacuous woman happened not to run from the room screaming and speaking in tongues, and the intellectually-bankrupt pundit class is happily jerking themselves off. "She shattered all stereotypes..." God, I hope they choke in their own cum and stupidity. Seriously.
I am watching C-Span's coverage, right? A question is asked. McBitch begins to answer. I realize that the answer bears no resemblance/relevance to the question that I think I hear. I start thinking, "Maybe, I didn't hear the question. Gosh, I'm so stupid." Then I look at the bottom of the screen where C-Span writes the question. It's the same question that I think I had heard in the first place. I breathe a sigh of relief when I realize that I'm still in control of my mental faculties. Then I say,"Gosh, that woman is monumentally stupid."
Next question is asked. Yeah, you guessed it - the answer bears no res...blah, blah, blah...What a fucking waste of time.
Anyway, Joe, you did good - "Maverick , he's not!" I could have died laughing. Senator Obama must be proud at how you passionately advocated for him, for all Democrats, for us - the regular guys and gals on the grind out here, just trying to live. Just stay that way. Disciplined. Eye on the prize, my man. Thirty-odd more days.
Repeat after me, Senator Biden: Grandiloquence is my enemy. Verbosity is not my friend.

Old flame cited as part of McCain's Latin experience
Sen. John McCain's senior foreign policy advisor cites a steamy romance 50 years ago with a Brazilian babe among the things that illustrate the candidate's decades-long interest in Latin America.
Speaking at an Americas Conference panel discussion Friday on the next U.S. president's Latin American policy, McCain advisor Richard Fontaine started out by mentioning an old Brazilian flame of McCain's, who recently emerged in the press.
''Talking a little about his personal experience, he was famously born in Panama and has traveled all over the hemisphere for many years.'' Fontaine said. ``In fact, I saw, I guess it was last week, that his old girlfriend in Brazil has been found from his early days when he was in the Navy and was interviewed. She's a somewhat older woman now than she was then, but it sorta speaks to the long experience he has had in the region -- in the most positive terms.''
Fontaine was referring to former model Maria Gracinda Teixeira de Jesus, who recently gave an interview to O Globo saying the former sailor was quite the kisser. According to McCain's memoirs, `Faith of My Fathers,` they met in 1957, when his ship, the USS Hunt docked in Brazil.
''I called him John but also my darling and my sweet coconut,'' she said. ``He was a great kisser. I liked it so much that I bought a book to learn how to kiss myself.''
Asked afterward about whether he was suggesting that McCain's fling with a Latin hottie counted as Latin America foreign policy experience, Fontaine said: ''The only thing I was trying to convey was that his experience goes back a long way,'' Fontaine said. http://www.miamiherald.com/americas_conference/...

fyi the Nation is printing this article in its 10/6/08 edition "McCain and the POW Cover-up. Here are comments from editor&publisher.com about the article. Also, the author is a Pulitzer Prize winner who won other awards. He also wrote a book of which the move The Killing Fields is based.
"Sydney Schanberg Writes Massive Piece on John McCain Hiding 'POW Secrets'
By Greg Mitchell
Published: September 18, 2008 5:50 PM ET
NEW YORK Sydney H. Schanberg, the longtime New York Times reporter and editor and Newsday columnist -- and author of "The Killing Fields" -- has written a 9000-word investigative piece on John McCain and his longstanding efforts to, as Schanberg asserts in his lede, "hide from the public stunning information about the live Vietnam prisoners who, unlike him, didn't return home."
Part of the piece has just gone up at The Nation web site (www.thenation.com) and will appear in its Oct. 6 issue. A full version, with graphics, appears at The Nation Institute site. Schanberg, who once doubted claims about a large number of POWs left behind in Vietnam, later wrote dozens of columns for Newsday about the subject -- and McCain's alleged inactions. Now Schanberg criticizes the press for allowing this whole subject to be swept under the rug for so long.
The new piece details the evidence that hundreds may have been left behind, along with McCain promoting federal prohibitions that keep key evidence classified. Schanberg also reveals that he received a personal briefing in 1992 from high-level CIA officials who said intelligence suggested that many men were not freed -- and later executed. He raises several questions about why McCain has acted the way he has but, in any case, strongly believes that McCain owes the voter "some explanations." He also urges reporters to "dig into" the archives and complete "the historical record."

Reading that piece on Palin complaining about Katie Couric and her saying that Obama is not qualified, I get the the distinct feeling that this woman is very jealous of this uppity negro. She's a very presumptuous woman who wants to be the head of the ticket but can't. She wishes she was in the same position as Obama but doesn't have the talent or intelligence to be where he is.

From Huffington Post:
TMZ reported today that Queen Latifah would be appearing on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend in the role of VP debate moderator Gwen Ifill:
Well-placed sources tell TMZ Queen Latifah is getting in the middle of the Sarah Palin/Joe Biden VP debate by portraying last night's moderator, PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, on "SNL" this week.
A rep for "SNL" confirmed the news to Huffington Post, saying, "IF we do a VP debate sketch, we have lined up Queen Latifah to play Ifill."
"SNL" has no black female cast members, and only one black male cast member, Kenan Thompson. Fred Armisen, who is of Venezuelan, Japanese, and German ancestry, currently plays Barack Obama on the show.
At the risk of sounding uncouth or un-PC--I always knew there was something different about Fred Armisen, that he wasn't just another white person. I never bothered to look up his bio either, so I'm also lazy, I guess.
Biden won the debate. that's irrelevant to mccain/palin camp. they went in knowing that they were aiming not as much to win the debate as to win votes, e.g. skeptical conservative independent white women in ohio... i think she may have gotten white votes across the board.

I've been hearing bad things about Pakistan lately. The word on the air waves is that they are far more of a threat than Iraq or Iran. This troubles me because we have a very high Pakistani population in my school district & at my school. They are model students and I have a deep fondness for them. I don't want our countries to have bad relations. You know they catch a lot of mess as it is. Most of the girls wear the hijab, which is no big deal, but makes them totally identifiable. Other students call them Bin Laden (yes, both males & females). Many African girls also wear the hijab (head scarf), but the Afghani girls don't. This is Texas where I have seen graffiti on Mosques with my own eyes. They are easy targets.

Really really tough issue, something that the gotcha questions can't really capture. We can't really defeat the Taliban / al Qeda without incursions into Pakistan. I suspect we finally decided to cross that boundary because Pakistan is in turmoil after the ouster of Musharraf. The Bush administration put a bet on Mush and lost. The problem for the Pakistani leadership is that they don't really control their borders either, and they're not very excited at the prospects of policing that area. Yet it's also an insult to their sovereignty.
In short: no good answers. Lots of careful diplomacy. You know, the kind of thing that McCain is good at ;-)
(Newser) – Think Sarah Palin's performance was folksy and colorful last night? Pundits reached to do it justice:
* "I always wondered what a wolverine would sound like chewing through plywood," writes Howard Fineman of Newsweek. "Now I know: like Sarah Palin 'debating' Joe Biden." * “Somewhere in heaven, Norman Rockwell is smiling,” writes David Brooks in the New York Times.
* “The perky weather girl was more appealing than the gray politico,” writes Daniel McCarthy of the American Conservative. But listen to any slice of Biden’s performance and it’ll make sense and make a point. “Palin … not so much.” * "What she showed was some folksy charm and some energy—qualities that might get her selected for Dancing With the Stars, if not Jeopardy," allows Joe Klein of Time. But Biden’s gimmick-free, commanding performance proved him the only plausible president onstage.
Sources Newsweek, American Conservative, Time, New York Times
I know we've talked about this a lot, but it's pretty clear now how long this plot has been cooking. The RNC philosopher-kings settled on this Act as its scapegoat for the economic outcome, and it's a brilliant choice, because it's easy to argue that forcing banks to give mortgages to brown people is obviously stupid and bad. Except the reality doesn't match the claim.
As DeLong points out, this is not unlike the antisemitic conspiracy theories, although it's somewhat reversed (Jewish people are scary because they are RICH; black people are scary because they are POOR).
If the attacks on "community organizers" had you scratching your head a month ago, it was part of this sleazeball attempt to link Obama to the mortgage meltdown. Somehow, community organizers = mortgages for black people.
It's so pervasive that, last week when I was making conversation at a random bus stop in Seattle, a student from the local community college told me she thought her economics professor was a Republican. I asked her what he thought was going on with the economy. She responded that his story starts with the Community Investment Act.
There's a conspiracy alright, but it's coming from the Republicans.
If I were really optimistic, I would say that this smear has failed (except among wingnuts) because Americans aren't *that* stupid, or racist. But I think the smear has failed because it's just too complicated to understand. If you're smart enough to understand this attack, you're also smart enough to know what the truth really is.
Teacher
I really agree with you on this one, Anderkoo. I heard an economist discuss the racist and predatory practices that contributed to the calamity and the lie. Part of the mythology is that these people bought houses they could not afford without any mention of the outrageous terms they were subjected to, even when not warranted by their credit rating. There was no incentive for the mortgage broker to offer the person the cheapest rate they could find, but the exact opposite, because the mortage broker gets a percentage. Who would pay themselves $5 grand when they could pay themselves $8 grand? The first lie is, "your credit is not the best, but I'm going to help you out." They then proceed to talk them into 2 ARM loans @ 18% & 20% when prime was 5% or 6%. Even though this is usury, they are encouraged to be thankful because they are getting the american dream. All they need to do is pay this for 2 or 3 years and then refinance. They are ok paying the $1000 a month for 3 years and this is not a hardship for them. Then they get a letter from the Nth mortage company-because their mortgage has been sold multiple times by now and they can barely keep up with it- telling them that their ARM is now adjusting and their monthly payments are going from $1000 a month, which they could afford to $2300 a month, which they can't afford.
It's not that they couldn't afford the house, per se, it's that they couldn't afford the predatory lending practices. For most people, it comes down to the monthly payments and the down payment. Even if the person has no down payment per se, they still need to have the $ for points, fees, etc. They are still going to put down $5 to $10 grand, even with no money down. Closings are scary, and they try to sneek extra fees in, so one must be sober and vigilant when going thru it. People also need to know that they can challenge certain things, and they don't know that, so they REALLY get hosed. They may be afraid to call the bluff of the mortgage/title company, because they really want their house. It is not an easy process and it needs to be simplified a lot.
Anderkoo
Among many injustices was the number of minority families who qualified for prime loans but were pushed into sub-prime loans. (There must have been many white families, too, but I suspect that minority families were easier to single out as "marks." Would love more facts on WHY this was happening and whether it came from POLICIES or racialist assumptions by agents). Sure, there were also families who were truly in subprime territory. In those cases, I blame not just marketing but also propaganda coming from all directions that home ownership is "the American dream." I still bear a grudge against Tavis Smiley in particular for being so willingly used by subprime lenders to get the message out to his audience.
Home ownership is not for everyone -- right now it's not for me -- and I would like to see more education in all communities about sensible ways to invest. There were lots of middle-class white families also being suckered into "the American dream" that they thought they deserved.
caligirl
your comment reminds me of something barack used to say a lot back during his primary stump speech: "i won't just end the war, but the mindset that got us into war in the first place!" that really resonated with me, and i wish he'd revive that line...
more than anything else, any bailout, americans need to end the MINDSET that got us into this mess in the first place. the propaganda...incessant commercials, billboards, reality shows ("cribs"), all that garbage that makes people who consume it feel substandard or less than. the non-stop suggestion of inadequacy that is the crux of the issue. it takes an incredible amount of personal determination and mental stamina to resist that.
Anderkoo
Agreed -- Barack has been consistent about a message of responsibility. I wonder what that will mean in governance.
The problem with ending the culture of consumerism is that our entire economy is built around it. You don't have to listen too hard to hear the fretting over what will happen when Americans stop buying -- because the economy really will come crashing down. People buying big-screen televisions keep other people employed at the store, the shipping companies, etc.
This is why consumerism is an addiction -- it's a spiral that's impossible to get out of without a lot of pain. Americans will need a lot of strength to get through a "12 step program" to get off our credit cards and back to real life.
“Like all of the family members that are here today gathered on this green, my heart is full of love and pride,” he said. “We take comfort in the knowledge that you are the best trained, best prepared group of citizen soldiers our country and this state has ever sent into harm’s way.”
All told, Biden’s remarks lasted just over three minutes, far shorter than his speeches typically are at such events, according to Lt. Col. Len Grattieri, spokesman for the Delaware Guard.
“I’ve come here many times before as a Delawarean, as a United States Senator, but today I come as you prepare to deploy as a father,” Biden said. “A father who got some sage advice from his son this morning: ‘Dad keep it short we’re in formation.’”
I don't pray often, but tonight I will pray for them. Joe and his son are sacrificing so much for a war that we don't belong in.

Gwen Ifill had to stick to the questions. There was already buzz before the debate about her being bias because of her book coming out which referenced Obama. If Palin won't have achieved the low bar set for her prior the debates and Gwen would have been more aggressive in getting her to actually answer a question the right would be screaming bloody bias.....
good strategy ahead of the debate was to poison the question chair. if gwen had pressed, it would have activated the "this debate is invalid" mechanism set in place. that would have swung a lot of votes to mcpalin. i think all sides agreed to a draw. ifill don't press. biden nail mccain and stay the policy course. palin - just talk to the air as you always do. ...stasis at worst. slight vote gain in swing state and indep voters at best - for palin. for biden - keep obama lead intact. for ifill - get out of this thing, just get out of it.

You are preaching to the choir. Keep in mind that society doesn't want to pay for any actual solutions, which are simple but not easy. It is also very hard to influence values, which have a big impact on education. Factor in all the examples of people in our culture who are dumb but also rich....Our society values rich over smart, unlike other cultures. This is something I love to talk about if anyone can recommend a blog to me.
Craig, I had essentially the same reaction. Biden showed up, armed with facts, knowledge and unmatched experience. He took every question and not only answered impressively, but educated his audience.
Palin was cute and personable. She was even articulate in some responses. But articulation of grammar is no substitute for the articulation of knowledge and command of the facts. I soon got bored with the you-betcha's and doncha-know's, and grew impatient with her non-answers.
In short, Biden won because he was supposed to. And Palin lost for the same reason.

On the plus side, no matter how hard the MSM spins, the people have already spoken. They look disingenuous when they don't factor the voice of the people (polls) into their spin, though I've heard many of them say thy don't believe or trust the polls.
They still have white privilege, but it is diminished. They can't get away with the same stuff they are use to getting away with because we have alternative forms of media. I listened to one after the other praise Palin this morning and state how they think she won BUT the polls have a different opinion. Even better, all the polls agree with each other, so they couldn't provide one that supported with their spin.

I really wish I was back in VA for this---you have to admit, Obama giving a rally near the notorious East End community of Newport News will be inspiring to so many down there. Iam so proud that he is courting Virginia hard this year. And I think this rally will resonate well with all the blue-collar shipyard workers, military, and Hampton Roads in general. People can continue to claim Obama is disconnected to the people(elite) , but giving a speech In Newport News---not far from one of the poorest Hampton Roads communities and near one of the region's largest employers is inspiring---He DOES care about the people and I hope so many of the young people will be inspired in the East End since it so desperately needs "change" and a fresh start.
I don't know about the military people; I know some who are not enthused. I'm only going in my blogging role, though, so I won't be causing any trouble.
It will be interesting. I try my best to stay out of Newport News, unless I'm on the highway.
Monie
D., you and the rethugs keep underestimating veteran's support for Obama....as you can probably tell, I am a part of a military family and many of the spouses and active-duty members I know are voting Obama because McCain's record on veteran legislation sucks, and soldiers are getting tired of going to Iraq...I have friends who have been on 3 separate year-long tours and preparing to leave again...and many really leaned toward Obama after McCain picked Sarah Palin. Out of 12-13 of my closest military friends, at least 9 are voting Obama....and I have a diverse group of friend---s, black, white, Mexican, German etc.
By the way, why is Vets for Freedom paying frat boys to protest?
My God, Monie...I JUST found out about that (I'm in a cab heading back from the VFF office in DC).
My understanding is that someone got a little overzealous with their emails. Foul, but no true harm done.

I can imagine the new John McCain ad right now...
"Barack Obama visits Newport News, VA, home to one of the most notorious torturers in American history (picture of Michael Vick flashes up on the screen). So many from Barack Obama's community have been BAD for America (picture of Frank Raines), BAD for our values (picture of OJ) and BAD for you (picture of white kid with puppy). Barack Obama...BAD judgement...BAD NEWZ....
This is John McCain and I approve this message...Change is coming."

It wouldn't be complete without the picture of Allen Iverson with a chair and a group of white senior citizens bowling.
If this shows up on tv, you can count on a strongly worded post from me. But, hey. It could be your ticket to ride! They are desperate enough to use it.
Monie
ha, ha...Town, you are pure comedy---but so true. It is sad when a John McCain ad like that is not some far-fetched idea.
Teacher
Have fun writing your speech, & most of all, enjoy the Obama rally tomorrow. I'll be interested in hearing how close you get to the Kool-aid table. You're probably more thirsty than you know.
I don't see how a smart person like you can support racists....
Okay, that's worth a break in writing. Support racists?
I don't. I acknowledge the shady racial history of both political parties, but I don't let that history affect what I believe and what I say in public.
Teacher
Yes, the nation has racist history too, but thats not what I'm talking about. You don't think John-I-will-always-hate-gooks-McCain is a racist? I could not vote for him, no matter what party he represented. Same with Palin. Like Chris Rock said, If Flavor Flav were nominee of the party I support, I would not vote for him. This is not about a political party, but about supporting a person who represents/does not represent values or policies I agree with. Racism is a deal breaker for me. Can you support MCain with his record of voting against benefits for veterans? Is there anthing which is a deal breaker for you? I don't really know any Black Republicans. My intention is not to offend. I'm sure you've had this conversation many times, but I'm not able to read EVERYTHING that is posted.
I don't think McCain is a racist. I think he harbors ill feelings toward his captors, but knows that their thoughts and actions aren't representative of an entire population. I can understand and-to an extent-sympathize with that.
McCain's voting record on veterans' issues is not the best; I can acknowledge that. It will have to improve in order for him to keep my support past this election, should he win.
Deal breakers....short of McCain calling Obama "boy" or the n-word on national TV (which I still have nightmares about)? "I don't know, but I'll get back to ya." ;)
McCain-or rather, conservatism in general-represents to me an opportunity to succeed-and more importantly, fail-on my own. I believe that we don't need the government to level the playing field; with hard work, we can level our respective fields ourselves. So, with that, it's hard for me to support someone who I believe believes the polar opposite of that.
Is McCain the best choice? No; there's others who I could and would support. Is he the best choice for me in this election? Considering the alternatives, yes.
Anderkoo
I'd love for you to articulate your vision of where conservatism goes from now, D. Frankly I think that we're about ready for a synthesis between libertarian and New Deal philosophies and move on to something more interesting. I'm heartened to see that Richard Thaler is one of Obama's advisers -- the ideas that he and Cass Sunstein laid out in "Nudge" about "paternalistic libertarianism" are quite persuasive. Of course, they take for granted that there is no such thing as a level playing field, and I think that's going to be part of a new (post-modern) consensus.
And even economists are increasingly recognizing that psychology and other forces shape "rational" choices.
We need to get beyond "Market is good" and "Market is evil."
When I hear Obama underlining personal responsibility AND social responsibility, as Teacher points out, I hear the beginnings of a new way to resolve that old battle. But then, maybe I'm an optimist and just hearing what I want to hear.
Will they...not without a shock to the system (which may come this year) and a lot of deaths (most of the old conservative guard). I might get up the nerve-and money-to test the theory myself.
As to how long...years. That's the best answer I can give.
Anderkoo
Good luck with that -- I feel for you, because this is where liberals are just coming out of.
The extreme wings will hold the GOP hostage for the next decade, blaming the fall on straying from their core values.
It will take many years of humiliation before they can be purged from the ranks.
Then will come a period of pragmatism (what I see culminating in Obama).
From a cyclical POV, when the other party gets supermajorities it's hit its peak. There will be a plateau... then overreach... then our equivalent of GW Bush.
With any luck, it will be decades before that happens. Hopefully you will still be a young man to benefit from the collapse and lead the new revolution.
Teacher
Anderkoo, I was with you until you said, "our equivilent of GW Bush." Can you please clarify what you mean?
I liked & understood your article D, but as I stated on your site, for me, republicanism/conservatism is synonymous with corruption. I don't see what is offered to me by embracing your/their ideals besides keeping them empowered. Whats in it for me? Whats in it for the people in the hood?
Anderkoo
"Anderkoo, I was with you until you said, "our equivilent of GW Bush." Can you please clarify what you mean?"
I guess I'm being totally ridiculous here but I mean that, in 20-30 years, all the energy we have right now will become tired, the "establishment," and some leader will come along and embarrass us so badly that we'll have to go slink into a cave, lick our wounds, and rethink the whole thing. Carter is probably the equivalent, though I was too young to remember that era. (I guess if Carter is Bush, Obama is Reagan... I see these things as going back and forth over time)
Teacher
Have you not heard O speak about personal responsibility? We have had some heated discussions here about who was under the bus after he finished. Being a teacher, I am also big on personal responsibility. But as we can all see from this election cycle, and from daily life in general, the playing field is not level. I also think that other races have not had to endure the psychological assult that we have had to endure. Our society makes all kinds of excuses not to try to level the playing field, so I don't think anyone needs to worry about anyone but white people getting breaks they haven't earned. I understand your words about supporting the Crypster, but inside, I don't get it. It's an emotional thing and not about your explanation. Thanks for trying. Maybe you are more Libertarian than Republican?
I've always termed myself a "neoconservative independent." I'm not registered as a Republican or democrat (more because VA doesn't make you identify when you register. In full disclosure, I was a registered Republican when I lived in DC).
All the online quizzes I've taken (like those are scientific) have put me right on the line between Republican and Libertarian. The Ron Paulian brand of libertarianism scares me, though, so I haven't looked too much into it.
We can agree that the playing field isn't level. And yes, I've heard Obama speak about personal responsibility. But then, a few breaths later, I've heard him talk about how the government should do "more" for people. I can't support that. Let me fall and pick myself up on my own, and I'll be wiser and better for that struggle.
Now, I'll concede that's not a specific "Obama" problem; that may be more of a beef with progressivism/liberalism in general. He just happens to be the standard bearer today.
(probably much more than you needed; still halfway in speech mode)
Anderkoo
I think we're in for some interesting few years on this libertarian-welfare balance. We all know that government plays an important role in ensuring the free market. For example, I think it sounds good, but it's stupid to blame the current meltdown on Wall Street on "greed." Wall Street is greedy? Shocking! The point isn't that there was greed, the problem is that the greed wasn't properly constrained and directed in a productive, rather than destructive, direction.
Meanwhile, things that even libertarians think are the function of government -- like taxes for roads -- might become obsolete as technology improves. Libertarians would love if you could just pay for roads by the mile, as you drive (all roads = toll roads). As an environmentalist, I would too. So things are changing rapidly as technology advances and as we begin to understand better how people behave in complex, interwoven, global economies/societies.
Our society is too big, and too interdependent, to reject the idea that "I am my brother's keeper." There was a time when that was literally true, and communities could take care of themselves. Post-modern capitalism has made that impossible. My neighbor's failures can be like a house fire that can easily spread. The trick will be how to create a safety net without turning into socialist France. I have hope it can be done.
Town
If you don't feel that McCain is racist, why would you have nightmares about him calling Obama "boy" or "n-----r" on national TV?
I guess that works; haven't gotten to that stage yet. And I got the wink too. ;)

Did you notice that eveytime Palin mentioned McCain being a Maverick CNN's insta-poll nosedived. I'm thinking that people are getting tired of the BS but I don't wanna get my hopes up.
Sorry to interrupt the Republican “Non-Implosion is Victory” party, but there was some breaking news in Anchorage tonight that came out a couple minutes before the debate.
An Anchorage judge today refused to halt the Legislature’s investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin and denied the state attorney general’s attempt to throw out legislative subpoenas.
Superior Court Judge Peter Michalski heard arguments from both sides this morning and ruled just before 5 p.m. this afternoon.
“I think it’s great. It’s a big day for the state of Alaska,” said Peter Maassen, the lawyer representing the Legislative Council, which ordered the investigation.
Maassen said he expected the other side to attempt a last-minute appeal to the state Supreme Court. THERE IS MORE.
I think that prosecutor(s) "up there" are being emboldened to "fight" as a result of this presidential election! Just feelin'. No videos! :>)
7 minutes. (takes drink and checks off the free “Air Space” Palin picture in the center of the Bingo card).
Ahh! Just announced that judge dismissed the lawsuit filed to stop the Troopergate investigation.
I don’t like the set. WAY too much color. And where’s the babbling brook?
Here we go.
Biden won the coin toss. Bailout question. Focus on the middle class, not just wealthy.
Palin: Soccer game! Parents on sideline! Betcha! Fear Fear Fear! Reform. Freddie & Fannie (Bingo card!) Country first.
Q: Polarization
Biden. Talking about experience. Reaching across the aisle. Republican friends. “Fundamentals of the economy are strong” said McCain. 9:00 the economy was strong, 11:00 we are in crisis.
Palin: Fundamentals means work force. Greatest in this world. Governor, mayor, track record of reform. Maverick! (Bingo card) Barack Obama 96% along party line. Energy, reform.
Q” Who was at fault in the meltdown?
Palin: Lenders. Deception. Greed. Wall Street. Getting rid of corruption. Joe six-pack! Hockey Mom! (2 bingo card marks!) Heck! (Bingo card) I can’t keep up!
Biden: Let Wall St. run wild. John McCain wants deregulation. Believed Wall St. could self-regulate. John McCain called for deregulation 20 times. Wants to deregulate healthcare industry. Deregulation is the promise. Story about Joey Danko who can’t fill his gas tank.
This is a LENGTHY post! :>)
Obama-Biden '08!!

I am interested in seeing how they are going to explain how McCain is now calling for Bush to veto the bailout that he just voted for. He made it sound like anybody that pushed for earmark legislation was going to be confronted by an angry mob with torches and pitchforks led by McCain himself.
I know there was somebody in his camp that had to tell him that wasn't such a good idea

Isn't it the Obamas' anniversary today?
Val
yes. 16 year anniversary.
rikyrah
i'll check. and find some excuse to congratulate them..LOL
Palin mentioned Geraldine Ferraro as her favorite VP "candidate" (when she was supposed to name an actual VP office holder). Well, note the difference:
Put up a picture of Palin and Ferraro and I sure we can get the point across to Palin in a way that speaks to her (Palin) on her level: One of these women is not like the other...
