55 years ago, my aunt faced the same problem. Her husband didn't want her to have the abortion, and she wound up dying, as well as the baby. And back in 1953, abortion was illegal unless it was in the interest of saving the life of the mother.

On another level – my own mother found herself unwed and pregnant. She couldn't endure the shame and stigma that brought. So, she did the back room thing. Thank God it left no permanent damage, and until she got pregnant with my brother (born in 1956) and me a few years later, she carried a truckload of guilt. Not because of the abortion, but because of the way she had to do it. She was not given the right to choose, then.

My mother was a Christian, but seeing her sister dying like that, and making the choice she did; while she didn't cheer for the passage of Roe v. Wade, she felt more comfortable in knowing as her daughter, while if I got in the same situation and didn't want a baby, I had the right to choose. And trust me, if McCain steals this election, he will put another conservative that will reverse Roe. Book it.

However, I'm told by some ReThug insiders that if Roe is reversed, the GOP has nothing else to fire up their base, because everything else they had charge of is royally effed up.
