Ok, this one is a little theoretical but I think you can figure out how to boil it down to something that makes sense in English. It's an observation that my wife has had recently that young people don't think about “belonging” and “membership” the way they (supposedly) used to, that they don't want to “join,” but they are willing to get involved and do things in an ad-hoc kind of way. This has driven her mentor, an old-school labor organizer, nuts, but after trying things his way for a while, she's started trying to reframe what it means to belong and be part of an organization in today's world.

When Clay Shirky's “Here comes everybody: Organizing without Organizations” first came out, I hated the title because it implies that we can somehow just self-organize, without leadership, direction, or commitment. He clarified that the title really should have been “Organizing without Institutions,” which didn't sound as good. But the point is: has labor become an INSTITUTION rather than an ORGANIZATION, and has that made it harder to include younger people in the ranks?

What can labor do to learn the lessons of the past few years in networked politics? I'm not saying that SEIU should become a Facebook group, but I'm curious how it will adapt to a new era.
