Most Christians will agree that religion ought to be apolitical. And Saddleback showed the promise of a reconcilliation between the apolitical aspect of the movement and the rational language of pluralist politics. But Sarah Palin has essentially interrupted the reconcilliation, and has reassured all America of what it means to be a Christian in our Great Nation: Guns are good, wealth is virtue, Sex is shame, war is holy, and there is no need to Discuss It Any Further. Sin brings suffering, so let's trounce the sinners and ignore the existence of the suffering sinners. Sladerous campaign speeches become cathartic pressure-valves for backwater imaginations. The greater the bloodshed, the more rapturous the ejaculation. No insult can cut deep enough. But every attempt should be made -- in the name of freedom.
The same Evangelical leaders -- Warren, Wallis -- who made Saddleback possible ought to be taking a good, cold-eyed look at what the Palin nomination has done to their community. They should look keenly at the ignorance and intolerance it brings to light.
And they should do something about it.

rikyrah: Sooooo, Rangel is finding out that He CAIN'T act/be like the Caucasian Boys.
O.K. You say. So far. like the white boys!! But READ ON:
But Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., asked colleagues to let the ethics committee investigate and urged Republicans to stop trying to have him removed from his post.
As House Ways and Means Committee chairman, Rangel has a powerful say over tax law changes. By his own admission, he has no excuse for not reporting years worth of rental income on a beach vacation property he owns in the Dominican Republic.
“Mistakes. We all make ‘em. We all have to say we’re sorry, but we all don’t have to attack each other,” Rangel said.
House debate over the matter turned personal when he said GOP leader John Boehner, did not really have his heart in it when he and other top Republicans called for Rangel to be removed as chairman.
Boehner, R-Ohio, then rose to deny that claim.
“My intent here is not to claw at my friend from New York. My intent here is to have justice and to have all of us live by the rules of the House. I’m sorry that I had to do it but I have a job to do on behalf of my colleagues,” Boehner said.
The exchange capped a day on which Rangel admitted embarrassing mistakes in his personal finances but insisted they were innocent errors of omission, rather than acts of deliberate deception or greed. Those errors, he said, would be corrected in amended filings to both the IRS and the Congress.
“I really don’t believe that making mistakes means that you have to give up your career,” the lawmaker, who has spent nearly 38 years in Congress, said in a lengthy talk with reporters.
Did you note ANY DIFFERENCE?? "THEY" were saying - "YOU got ta give it up!"
Can you smell the PIETY??? Lawd ha'mercy!! :>) :>)

As the presidential race heats up and Democratic nominee Barack Obama is forced to respond to increasingly tough attacks from the Palin-energized GOP ticket, his campaign style is coming under growing scrutiny. Some feel the candidate has too often been more head than heart, more intellectual than passionate, less a leader than a lecturer. Will his style survive the rough-and-tumble of a modern media-saturated presidential campaign?
Yet balancing the two personae — professor and politician — has been key to Obama's success. Much of his style can be traced back to his dozen years as an academic, at the University of Chicago Law School. A look at those teaching days reveals just how he has managed to be at once popular and intellectually exacting.

GreenLadyHere, this is a fantastic article. I think teaching/learning is a sacred thing if done well, and it seems Professor Obama knows how to do this work.
Also, just for your own fun, if you ever want to try making links with text instead of the address, here's a link that sort of shows how to do it:
The "code" in the first gray box (under "The syntax of creating an anchor"): is the key. Just paste the web address in instead of where it says url (keep the quotes around it) and write whatever you want the link to say instead of Text to be displayed).
I think the addresses are just fine -- I just know how into learning you are and thought you might get some fun out of this :)

Rikyrah: So I'm watching "The Gov." give THAT SPEECH, WRITTEN BY THE "McAncient" SPEECH WRITERS. She just landed in Alaska.
I think she's got it!!! And she BELIEVES it now!! I can't believe it!! YES I CAN!!! YUUUUUUUK!!!! :>(
She speaks as if Alaska is NOT a part of the UNION!! What's up with that!!
AND her support there - REMEMBER:EACH ALASKAN will receive [from oil revenues] $2000! They get this money EVERY YEAR!!!
If you live in the other 49 states, WE PAY TAXES EVERY YEAR!!!THEY DON'T!!!
We are out here - the Republicans or ex-Republicans who will no longer tolerate the racist, despicable slime machine that the right wing and the John McCain-Sarah Palin campaign has become. I know, for I am one of them. I am not your typical progressive, being an ex- Air Force officer (9 years), evangelical Christian, card carrying conservative, Rush/Hannity listener - an now an Obama supporter in John McCain's home state of Arizona.
And I know I am not alone - for one, my grown sons are with me. My older, now in college, proudly rides around with Obama stickers on his scooter. He, also, was raised an evangelical Christian, and goodness knows I subjected him to a conservative worldview.
So what gives? Why are we out here - the Rebublican Obama supporters, the ones you don't expect.
ROTC Cadet, Air Force Captain, Free Republic diarist, James Dobson quoting conservative, 2 time Bush voter. Church worship leader. These all describe me. And there are more just like me. My evolution to progressive awareness has been a slow one, but is has never gone faster than in the last 3 or 4 months. How do I describe myself now - a progressive conservative, of course (if there is such a thing)!
So why am I and those like me out here? I am out here because I see through the hysteria that the right wing has become. I know the abandonment of principles when we see it. I despise in today's Republican Party what I was always told were the worst traits of the 'left' in years past. I know better these days. I have come to the realization that in many ways I left my brain turned off for far too long. I listened to those I was supposed to agree with, and never tried to be, as Rush Limbaugh says, a 'truth seeker'. Well I am a truth seeker now, I find truth much more often when I listen to Rachel Maddow that I ever did on Rush. I am able to see (on the right) political opportunism, shameless lying, rampant political positioning, and a party leadership that has forfieted all claim to trust.
Nothing has shamed me more than the evangelical groupthink around the Sarah Palin pick. People I used to respect for their strong stand on the family and values have completely abandoned their principles to back someone whom they think offers a slim grasp at victory. I will not participate in it, nor will my church, for which I am thankful. Trust me, the groupthink on the right is not as rampant as you may think.

Hollywwood can be cathartic sometimes (when it's not spending time being vapid).
The more we have criticisms in a positive manner about issues as opposed to put-downs on character, the more we will come out on top. We cannot play the Repugnantcan Game. They are the best at getting in the mud and slinging it at everyone. We cannot beat them at their game. Let's face it. We were winning when we played by our own rules. Let's stop giving them that power.
See what Hasselbeck did? Y'all know I am protective of Michelle, and there are a lot of things I would like to say in retaliation. However, if I just say, Obama's taxcuts will benefit working and middle class people and McCain's economic policy is a tribute to CEOs, we come out on top. When we keep hammering the issues, we come out on top.
We can do this guys, the race is close. But we need to decide, do you still believe in this country? I think I do...after a long time, I think I finally do. And it's not because of Obama. It's because of us.

Democrats must learn some respect by Clive Crook
This article is not the first to note the cultural contradiction in American liberalism, but just now the point bears restating. The election may turn on it.
Democrats speak up for the less prosperous; they have well-intentioned policies to help them; they are disturbed by inequality, and want to do something about it. Their concern is real and admirable. The trouble is, they lack respect for the objects of their solicitude. Their sympathy comes mixed with disdain, and even contempt.
Democrats regard their policies as self-evidently in the interests of the US working and middle classes. Yet those wide segments of US society keep helping to elect Republican presidents. How is one to account for this? Are those people idiots? Frankly, yes - or so many liberals are driven to conclude. Either that or bigots, clinging to guns, God and white supremacy; or else pathetic dupes, ever at the disposal of Republican strategists. If they only had the brains to vote in their interests, Democrats think, the party would never be out of power. But again and again, the Republicans tell their lies, and those stupid damned voters buy it.
It is an attitude that a good part of the US media share. The country has conservative media (Fox News, talk radio) as well as liberal media (most of the rest). Curiously, whereas the conservative media know they are conservative, much of the liberal media believe themselves to be neutral.
Here in Wisconsin, one of the heads of the "Palin Truth Squad", former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow is giving interviews, outraged over the lipstick comment. The state GOP has called a 1:30 press conference where a group of GOP women will rip into Obama for all of the assembled TV cameras. My question... where the hell are the Democrats on this? Not just here, but nationally, they are letting Obama get bloodied over this. Where is Biden? Is he turning into this cycle's Edwards? Where are Pelosi and Boxer and Sebelius today?
The campaign needs to stop forcing Obama to take on the entire right-wing... His organization in every state should have high-profile surrogates out there today ripping into McCain and Palin, not just on the lipstick, but on the the sex ed ad and the judge's order for Palin to stay out of the divorce.
Where are these people?

Obama wasn't talking about Sarah...he wasn't engaging her. The Repubs come out and insist he was referring to her. Obama says no, it is a common phrase, and I was talking about McCain's policies. The Republicans continue to say he was talking about her. The press milks the story. The repubs say, see he's engaging the 2nd on the ticket...that must mean he sees her as an equal: unqualified.

This short piece is so insightful! It addresses why so many of us have been disturbed and eerily repulsed by the Republican pick of Palin as VP. Here is a young, attractive, smiling mother who is anti-nature, anti-woman's rights, anti-intellectual ,and anti-global in her views. There is not a shred of compassion in her message.
It's easy to feel confused and off balance by this contradiction in message and messenger.

Deepak Chopra on Obama and the Palin Effect
Sometimes politics has the uncanny effect of mirroring the national psyche even when nobody intended to do that. This is perfectly illustrated by the rousing effect that Gov. Sarah Palin had on the Republican convention in Minneapolis this week. On the surface, she outdoes former Vice President Dan Quayle as an unlikely choice, given her negligent parochial expertise in the complex affairs of governing. Her state of Alaska has less than 700,000 residents, which reduces the job of governor to the scale of running one-tenth of New York City . By comparison, Rudy Giuliani is a towering international figure. Palin's pluck has been admired, and her forthrightness, but her real appeal goes deeper.
She is the reverse of Barack Obama, in essence, his shadow, deriding his idealism and exhorting people to obey their worst impulses. In psychological terms, the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of "the other."
Obama is calling for us to reach for our higher selves and, frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind. (Just to be perfectly clear, I am not making a verbal play out of the fact that Sen. Obama is black. The shadow is a metaphor widely in use before his arrival on the scene.) I recognize that psychological analysis of politics is usually not welcome by the public, but I believe such a perspective can be helpful here to understand Palin's message.
In her acceptance speech, Gov. Palin sent a rousing call to those who want to celebrate their resistance to change and a higher vision. Look at what she stands for:
-- Small town values -- a denial of America 's global role, a return to petty, small-minded parochialism.
--Ignorance of world affairs -- a repudiation of the need to repair America 's image abroad.
--Family values -- a code for walling out anybody who makes a claim for social justice. Such strangers, being outside the family, don't need to be heeded.
-- Rigid stands on guns and abortion -- a scornful repudiation that these issues can be negotiated with those who disagree.
-- Patriotism -- the usual fallback in a failed war.
--"Reform" -- an italicized term, since in addition to cleaning out corruption and excessive spending, one also throws out anyone who doesn't fit your ideology.
Palin reinforces the overall message of the reactionary right, which has been in play since 1980, that social justice is liberal- radical, that minorities and immigrants, being different from "us" pure American types, can be ignored, that progressivism takes too much effort and globalism is a foreign threat. The radical right marches under the banners of "I'm all right, Jack," and "Why change? Everything's OK as it is."
The irony, of course, is that Gov. Palin is a woman and a reactionary at the same time. She can add mom to apple pie on her resume, while blithely reversing forty years of feminist progress. The irony is superficial; there are millions of women who stand on the side of conservatism, however obviously they are voting against their own good. The Republicans have won multiple national elections by raising shadow issues based on fear, rejection, hostility to change, and narrow-mindedness.
Obama's call for higher ideals in politics can't be seen in a vacuum. The shadow is real; it was bound to respond. Not just conservatives possess a shadow -- we all do.
So what comes next is a contest between the two forces of progress and inertia. Will the shadow win again, or has its furtive appeal become exhausted? No one can predict. The best thing about Gov. Palin is that she brought this conflict to light, which makes the upcoming debate honest. It would be a shame to elect another Reagan, whose smiling persona was a stalking horse for the reactionary forces that have brought us to the demoralized state we are in. We deserve to see what we are getting, without disguise.

I just read a diary about this on Kos (probably the same place with these pics) The person said all she heard (from the crowd) was nasty anti-Obama stuff. Will be interesting to see how McCain spins this one:
Another proactive thing you can do to protest the racism and sleazy lies of this campaign is to call Mcaint's office and voice your opinion on the despicable race he is running. I called the Washington office and left a voice mail then I called the Phoenix office and voiced my displeasure with the nasty racist tone of the campaign with the young woman who answered. If the media won't do their jobs, then we can individually let Mcaint know just how displeased we are with his not dealing with the issues, making the campaign about personal attacks instead.
Here are the numbers:
Phoenix Office: 602-952-2410
Tempe Office: 480-897-6289
Tucson Office: 520-670-6334
Washington Office: 202-224-2235
The young woman in the Tucson office told me she could leave a message if I gave her my address, which I refused for obvious reasons.
I also posted this information on Daily Kos, and other commenters have been calling the offices; apparently, they are getting through because the reports are that they're being hung up on and that the staffers are shell-shocked that suddenly they're getting this flurry of calls. As an Independent whose vote McCaint is, at least theoretically, trying to sway to his side, I feel it incumbent upon me to let him know that he ain't getting me interested with the tactics he is using.
What this does is let them know that there are voters out there who are not pleased with this swift-boating smear campaign that is just like the ones run in 2000 and 2004, that if this is indicative of the change McCaint is speaking of, then it is another of the myriad of lies they tell daily.
You can also call or email the broadcast and print news outlets and let them know what you think of the biased campaign coverage. It's time to get fired up and DO something to at least try to change the way things are going. 55 days - we've got 55 days to make it happen - and yes we can make it happen.
GreenLadyHere
99% Sure: THANK YOU SO MUCH for this information!!! Got my dime - gonna make my call!! :>) :>)
Please do and thanks, GreenLady. There were enough of us calling that they stopped answering his DC office phone when you pushed option 2 to speak to someone. The lines in Phoenix, Tempe and Tucson were jammed for awhile and some reported that the McCaint staffers were caught flat-footed and offguard by the sudden spurt in calls.
It's a good thing - he needs to know about our displeasure. There's also a campaign number to call though it too is a long distance number in Arlington VA -
The Mailing Address: John McCain 2008 P.O. Box 16118 Arlington, VA 22215
Phone # (703) 418-2008. When calling the senate office, they may ask for your address (why, I don't know). I suggest using one of Mrs. McCain's company addresses:
Henley & Co. 10201 E. Valley Road Prescott Valley, AZ (928) 445-4032
OR
4201 N 45th Ave Phoenix, AZ (602) 264-1635
It would be good to use the address of one of their seven homes but that information is difficult though not impossible to gather.
Calling and expressing your displeasure is at least cathartic; I felt good afterwards and to the young woman's credit, she listened to me patiently as I forcibly though not profanely nor loudly told her what I thought of the McCain campaign nasty tactics and lies, even got in a rant about Turd Blossom working with the campaign. I also left a message on the comment line in the DC office - option 1, I think.

From Andy McCarthy:
Even as Obama mathematically eliminated Hillary in the primaries, he was sinking like a stone because, as we're seeing now, he doesn't wear well over time.
The Chicago pol in him quite intentionally says a lot of offensive things (cling to guns and religion, punished with a baby, lipstick on a pig ...). He has not been swift enough to discern the change in the audience. This is a guy who, up til now, had to appeal to (1) an ultra-Left Chicago district, (2) the 7 in 10 Illinois residents who just wanted Alan Keyes to go away, and (3) the Democrats' antiwar base. They gave him such a warm glow maybe he was duped into thinking everyone would love his routine. In any event, this is his first conversation with America and he's not ready for prime-time. Plus, he is in the unenviable position of having to pose as a post-racial, post-partisan centrist when his record is one of race-conscious, left-wing partisanship. It's only natural that when he gets rattled and is not reading a script, he reverts to Hyde Park.
A primary season like the modern Democratic Party has is an exercise in unreality. It molds the candidate into something attractive to a fringe that is unrepresentative of the country at large. When Obama moved from that sandbox to the real playing field, he wasn't ready. In a panic, he sensed the need to turn to an old Washington pro — and somehow managed to find a pro, Biden, who shares some of his own worst foot-in-mouth tendencies (and has not been able to shake that congenital problem in his three dozen senate years). The result? It's only been a week and they have already suggested that they will order banana-republic style prosecutions of Bush administration officials, that Palin — mother of a special needs child — doesn't care about special needs children, and, now, lipstick on a pig.
This is exactly what it looks like: amateur hour.

In fact, I'm not convinced a large percentage of trolls are human -- there's so many that most just have to be 'bots.

I am becoming concerned that people now have in Palin the excuse they need to vote against Obama. Despite the fact our country's economy is on the brink of disaster; despite McCain's support of a war that few of us support or at least agree that it was not waged properly.
Michelle
I am becoming concerned that people now have in Palin the excuse they need to vote against Obama.
I don't think this is anything to worry about, in real terms.
There are people who were NEVER EVER going to vote for Senator Obama because he is Black. They would not and will not cast their actual vote for him, whether or not they would admit it.
If there is any truth to your concern, it's just rhetorical. That is, there may be some people who will refer to Palin when stating publicly that they will vote for McCain. But there is no actual vote "lost" -- they never would have voted for Senator Obama to begin with.
Seriously.
And please, consider channeling that worry into action to support Senator Obama's campaign, if and however you can.

But is your concern based off of the media's perception? Because its becoming very clear that they are scripting a storyline and not reporting the news.

That's the thing, Miranda. A lot of folks aren't as consumed as some of us are about to finding the real truth and scouring the nets. They may just eat what the MSM is feeding them. I think her fears are real especially if the DFW in ruthdfw stands for Dallas Fort Worth.
In any case, I am still remaining very positive with the help of Town, CraigHickman. Greenladyhere, and rorysmomma and have donated and am volunteering for my very first political campaign, shout out motorcitybadboy.
yes but perception when repeated enough becomes reality. I understand this site is pretty on spot when it comes to electoral map. Since sunday Obama has gone from 303 to 275.
Also, to the media's credit EVERYONE except Fox, including the WSJ has pointed out and provided PROOF that Palin is lying on the bridge to no where but the public seems to just keep ignorning that little fact....
Miranda
But my question is, do you really think the MEDIA is giving you a clear picture of the electorate? Do you believe their polls and analysis is actually reflective of voters in Wyoming or is it their own? Most of what we get is THEIR opinion (or rather what opinion is a ratings winner). Its been repeated to death that the polls absolutely DO NOT capture new voters or those without land lines. Polls can't capture a grassroots campaign. Have you seen anything regarding the ground game of either campaign on any segment of any show?

The South was always going to be a tough nut for Obama to crack, so I'm not surprised. Having said that, I wonder if he has a better chance in Florida now that the Jewish voters are looking sideways at Palin for her fundy views.

Hey JJai, how come you can be nice and cool and calm, yet I get all riled up when I read those types of posts?

Anyway, for the Obama naysayers and the doubters, Here's some good, positive stuff. Below is the transcript of Obama getting all up in McCaint's grill today in Virginia.
"Before we begin today, I want to say a few words about the latest made up controversy by the John McCain campaign. What their campaign has done this morning is the same game that has made people sick and tired of politics in this country. They seize on an innocent remark try to take it out of context, throw up an outrageous ad because they know that it'is catnip for the news media. I'm assuming you guys heard this watching the news. I'm talking about John McCain's economic policies, because it is more of the same - you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig - and suddenly they say "Oh you must be talking about the governor of Alaska." (LAUGHTER)
See, it would be funny except - of course the news media decided that was the lead story yesterday - they'd much rather have the campaign - this is the McCain campaign - about phony and foolish diversions than about the future. This happens every election cycle. Every 4 years this is what we do.
We've got an energy crisis, we have an education system that is not working for too many of our children and making us less competitive, we have an economy that is not creating hardship for families all across America, we've got 2 wars going on, veterans coming home, not being cared for, and this is what they want to talk about.
This is what they want to spend two out of the last 55 days talking about. You know who ends up losing at the end of the day? It's not the Democratic candidate, it's not the Republican candidate, it's YOU, the American people. Because then we go another year or another 4 years or another 8 years without addressing the issues that matter to YOU. ENOUGH! I don't care what they say about me, but I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! (HEAVY, LONGTIME APPLAUSE)
These are serious times and they call for a serious debate about where we need to take the nation. We can't take another 4 years that are like the last 8, where family incomes are going down at the same time as costs of everything are on the rise, where we keep on spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq at a time when our own infrastructure here at home is crumbling and the Iraqis have a $79 billion surplus that they're not spending. We can't take another 4 years of the same trickle down, on your own, special interests first approach to economics that is killing the middle class in this country.
Now John McCain has supported these policies for the last 8 years. He believes in them, and when you scratch the surface, there's not a dime's worth of difference between what he's offering and what we've already got. When he's done giving tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas, or $300 billion to the biggest corporations in America including the oil companies that are already making money hand over fist, the only change you're going to get are some pennies in your pocket. So spare me the phony outrage, spare me the phony talk about change.
We have real problems in this country right now and the American people are looking to us for answers - not distractions, not diversions, not manipulations - they want real answers to the real problems that we are facing. That's the kind of debate that I intend to have because that's the kind of debate the American people deserve. That is what you deserve and that is what you are going to get for the next 55 days."
Not only is he still on his game; he's landing even more punches.
malia
He not once, in that quote you transcribed, mentioned what he is going to do.
He has wasted an entire day defending himself from criticism.
He can't defend an energy policy that will not drill for domestic sources or include nuclear energy.
He cannot defend and education policy that does not stand up to the teachers unions and does not include school choice.
He cannot defend an economic policy that will raise our taxes.
He cannot defend a foreign policy that did not support the surge, defend our ally Georgia or take seriously the implications of negotiating with hostile dictators without preconditions.
He cannot defend himself from his own record of requesting (last year alone) $98 million in earmarks.
He cannot defend himself from the fact that while he rails against lobbyists, he and Joe Biden's son have worked to bring pork to Illinois.
AnthonyMason
Troll, I mean Malia, do you know that the oil companies are not required to sell any oil drilled in American soil?
Her just jellus because McCaint and his VP pick haven't yet articulated one policy that they will implement to help the poor and the middle class. Notice that none of the neo-con posters ever post a comment listing McCaint's policies, just a lame disrespectful, envious post about Obama.

I'm from the south and I believe that you catch more bees with honey that vinegar.
It is my hope that rorymomma, greenladyhere, town, craighickman, and etc. can help people refocus. We aren't adding any value to the campaign by hashing over negative polling. We do need to be equiped with information when dealing detractors buy bellyaching and whining add so very little.
I'm 99 Percent Sure that God is real, that the truth always trumps lies, that the world is a ghetto, and that the 2nd Coming is a happening that's not far away. :-)
I was born and raised in the South as well - Birmingham AL - and I was also taught that you can catch more flies with honey. There's another saying I used to have on my desk when I was a teen -
Be careful of the words you say, keep them soft and sweet, you never know from day to day which ones you'll have to eat.
:)
So I try not to be abusive but, since we are ostensibly preaching to the choir, we shouldn't have to catch them. I believe in tough love and they need to snap out of the negativity, even if it takes a slap up side the head. :)
We and the doubters/worriers/naysayers/critics also need to be proactive - there are plenty of things we can do to ensure a victory in November. It isn't all about what Obama/Biden does and our reactions to it. We need to get it through our thick skulls Obama constant refrain - we are the change we've been waiting for and change begins from the bottom up not from the top down.

The HAM! lol - I'm still salty with Legion Field for turning the entire parking lot into tailgate central for the Magic City Classic, but I go lots of love for the Ham!
I grew up on 7th Street near the corner of 8th Avenue, just a short walking distance from Legion Field. As a teen, I made a pretty penny on Saturdays during the fall by parking cars in our yards for the Alabama games when they played at Legion Field.
I do not understand the Magic City Classic, although I attended one way back in '91 because it was all the rage, dontcha know.
JJai, the 1% is the carnal me; I have a resurrected soul in a body that still lusts after sin.
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that [it is] good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched [wo]man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom 7:14-24
To put it more succinctly, as Isaiah 64: 6 says, [W]e are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags. Romans 3:10 is even more succinct - [T]here is none righteous, no not one.
Yet, I am 100% sure that it is well with my soul, and I know that to be absent from this body will be to be present with the Lord.
Miranda
You've only gone to one classic game?? OK....I guess since I come from a Bulldog family that would explain the annual trek to Birmingham. Half my family on both sides graduated from Alabama A&M...I have a few cousins there now. Back in the day when the bands were much better (in my humble opinion) - I couldn't WAIT to go...then afterwards the entire clan would go to my aunt's home on 32nd street for the feast of all feasts. I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it.
Eh hee! Hey, there's a scripture for TS too - Romans 3:4 says, Let God be true but every man a liar. :=)
Miranda, the bands were good back then; I went to Knoxville College and I had a lot of friends who either went to Clark, Morehouse, Spelman, Tuskegee, Fisk or Tennessee State.

The Guardian: The world's verdict will be harsh if the US rejects the man it yearns for
Can't say I disagree. The world will write us off as a lost cause. I think about 9/11 and how all the other countries rallied behind us and gave so much support (i.e. "We are all Americans"). If, God forbid, we were to experience another tragedy on that scale the rest of the world would now be like "Too bad for you, but you brought it on yourselves."
that will only fire up those who say we don't need any outsiders telling us what to do.

True, but those are usually some of the English-only dullards who can't point out Afghanistan or Antarctica on a map.

I don't know if anyone here is an Air America Radio listener, but for the last few days Lionel has been nailing Barack Obama--and sadly, he's been dead on in his criticism. Where's Obama's passion been lately? Where's Joe Biden? The McCain/Palin ticket has put Obama/Biden on the defensive after the GOP's post-convention poll bounce. And in Obama's interview on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, the man seemed way to measured in his responses, even when the questions could be justly cited as softballs.
Lionel has basically said that Obama/Biden needs to take back the news cycle. Ride or Die Joe needs to be out stumping (where is he?), and someone needs to find out who's been slipping BHO valium-spiked food. Forget talking about Sarah Palin's earmarks or the Bridge to Nowhere or her cash stipend for meals she ate at home. None of that stuff matters to anyone except wonks and bloggers. In fact, Obama should forget Sarah Palin altogether (at least verbally)--it's JOHN McCAIN at the top of the ticket he should be fighting. He hasn't had to do much in the way of interviews or soundbites with all of the fawning over his VP pick.
Get back to contrasting the ideas for addressing the everyday problems that are kicking people in the ass (the economy, health care, gas prices, etc.). Get McCain to have to respond and defend himself. Some suggestions:
"Mavericks, eh? Why should anyone take you two seriously when you've both been cheering on failed Bush policies since 2001-02?"
"They've been talking about changing the worst of Washington for two weeks. We've been talking about changing the way Washington works for 19 months. Where the hell have you people been?"
"Your grand ole' party has had the White House for over 7 years, and they had the Congress for practically five years of that. Iraq is a failure, the economy is tanking, and now the price oil is kicking everyone's butt. Why would we give you idiots four more years?"
"Where's your plan to fix our failing educational system, John? What are you REALLY going to do about energy policy? Drilling for more oil is a band-aid over a gushing wound, Senator. What about Iraq? Even President Bush has realized the need to withdraw [some] troops from Iraq--why do you want to stay there?"
TruthSeeker
I think he should be even harsher:
McCain wishes to abolish public education. He intends to make education into a business venture that you can opt into, or not. Do you believe education is essential to our future survival? If so, reject John McCain.
Drill, Drill, Drill....Isn't that what got us into his mess in the first place? Is there ANY doubt we're in a mess? We've heard about the sorts of drilling they've been doing over there...Thanks, but no thanks.
Bush is withdrawing troops. That was my plan all along..but Bush didn't even send me a thank you note. Nevertheless, it is good the troops are beginning to come home. It would have been even better if BUSH and MCCAIN didn't send them there in the first place!
Mavericks? More like cattle rustlers. Think that's harsh?...(Then he should go on to list all the ways they've ripped off the taxpayers.)
...Obama has to get in touch with his rage.
Honey01
I agree and disagree with parts of this analysis. For instance, "Lionel has basically said that Obama/Biden needs to take back the news cycle".
and " "Get back to contrasting the ideas for addressing the everyday problems that are kicking people in the ass (the economy, health care, gas prices, etc.). Get McCain to have to respond and defend himself"
I absolutely agree on this, but, but,but...the media could care less about about issues. The news cycle is all about, um her. It's almost the reverse situation of when McCain complained that Obama was the media darling. The media is too fixated on the new insurgent on the national political scene to be bothered with stuff like, NCLB funding, and the unemployment figures. The only significant Obama coverage Obama generates post the DNC coverage is usually some reported "gaffe" or a response to McCain/her attack.
I do want Obama to devote less time to "her" and focus on McCain. Let Biden deal with her. Although come to think of it, I am not sure if he ever really addresses her by name but rather uses "them" in a collective term. He should definitely keep reminding folks that the Republican party has been in power for the last eight years and continue to tie Bush and McCain together. Most importantly, I think he needs to use the words "economic interest" over and over again. Especially when he is addressing those so called voters who are now drawn to the GOP ticket ( women, rural working class). He needs to remind them, personality aside, is the GOP in THEIR best economic interest. Some of the media now (Anderson Cooper, Andrea Mitchell) are now puffing out their chests because they have finally acknowledged some of the discrepancies in Palins bio, "bridge to nowhere" weeks after it has reported in the blogspere. Get real. Get to the real issues.
Ok, so you are a working mom and you identify with Palin? Great, but let me point out policies that the GOP ie Bush ie McCaie support.
Anderkoo
Pacing and strategy. McCain shot from the hip, he got Palin, we'll see what will come of that as the weeks wear on. In the meantime, Barack can try to shout over the din and waste good ammo, or wait until the media gets bored with the hottie (btw, I don't think she's all that) and casts about for the next big thing. There's a natural swing to these cycles that the Obama campaign has generally been good about riding.
All I want for Christmas from you, Senator Obama: On Letterman tonight, please, I beg of you, pretty please, for the love of God, do NOT apologize in any way, shape, or form to anyone in the GOP about your lipstick comments. If you feel compelled to address them at all, and I'm certain that Dave will prod, please use the opportunity to emphasize the point that McBush and McBitch is trying to camouflage Bush's anemic policy prescriptions as something new, different, effective. I beg you Senator, do not back down. I don't even want to hear the words, "If anyone was offended by my comments..." PLEASE!
And I lied. There's one more thing I want for X-mas: a Democratic win in November. No biggie, right?
T. From Tapper's blog: 1) In October of last year, McBush used same analogy to denigrate Hilary Clinton's healthcare policy. 2) In December of last year, McBush swatted away criticisms by Mitt Romney by saying that "he won't get into a wrestling match with a pig" 3) McBush's former press secretary, Torie Clark penned a book titled in part, Lipstick on a Pig

He is not apologizing. He already gave a speech today saying the McCain campaign is trying to spread lies with Lipstickgate. He is not backing down.

With Obama reeling, Clintons not motivated to assist
"Obama wanted nothing to do with the Clintons. He fought against them and beat them in the primaries, although only with the Deus ex Machina effect of the superdelegates. Obama made it clear that they were the past, and he was the party’s future. In fact, when pushing back against the perception that Democrats were weak on defense in his acceptance speech, Obama pointedly ignored Bill Clinton when listing strong Democratic presidents from the past. That was less than two weeks ago, and the Clintons remember slights for years."
i just saw that blond idiot from the view talking about michelle obama! tht stuff pisses me of. Like the earlier post said: why dont just call us niggers and tell us to go away.

I woke up this morning with every news channel covering Lipstick Gate with McCain supporters yammering on and on about how this is so offensive, blah, blah, blah and all I could think is really, this is what it has come to? This is news? This is an actual issue that will affect the choice of who leads our country and by default the free world? I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I thought the end of the world is truly upon us because our stupidity is spinning out of control. Then I read this:
And laughed. Not because I want the earth to be sucked into a black hole but it does seem timely. No the world should not come to an end but maybe this experiment can serve as a recalibration.
Anyway...back to work.
lamh31
So,
So what other things can no longer be uttered because they are sexist.
I guess "sow's purse" is out. Because it has the word pig in it, and the word purse which is a woman's accessory, so it has to go. You are essentially calling all women who carry purses a female pig. Disgusting!
I guess Elton John can no longer sing "The Bitch is Back" because as you know that song is dripping with sexism. Why is he calling women Bitches? Why couldn't the song be called "The Strong, Independent, Self-Sufficient Woman Is Back". Elton John is of course a raging...sexist.
I guess that also means that I can no longer sing along to "My Girl" by the Temptations. Because it should be "My Woman", but wait, are the Temps trying to say that I am theirs? Women are not possessions. On second thought, maybe it should be changed to "This Woman, Who I Do Not Own, Who is My Equal, and Chose To Be Mine".
And of course forget about singing "It's A Man's World" by James Brown. It's just insulting. It's a Man's World but it wouldn't be nothin' without a woman or a girl. How dare he! The song should be changed to "It's a PERSON'S World" and it wouldn't be nothin' without a man or a woman.
Sexism is everywhere, right?

"I think Obama's comment—and the fake southern accent, the halting confusion, the disjointed sentences, that video is really amazing—suggest a man out of control, not in control. Clueless and uneasy. And I think that reflects more poorly, not better, on his suitability for the presidency. But that's why (and either way, as Kathryn suggests) whining about an intentional attack is not the right tone. It's not hard to see why they're melting down. The crowd at the McCain-Palin rally I'm now at in Virginia is unlike anything I've ever seen for a Republican candidate."
Michelle
I wondered who "ace" is "quoting" here and googled the first part of the sentence from phrase from the "comment" -- led me to a comment on the National Review site. What a surprise!
I won't link there but it is very easy to find, just google.
Trolls get so lazy they can't even write their own stuff. Or properly cite what they do lift.
There is more going on here than my first impression: Palin as big tent feminism
Honey01
I found a few things troubling with her article: Just a couple.
"As I said in my last column, I have become increasingly uneasy about Obama's efforts to sound folksy and approachable by reflexively using inner-city African-American tones and locutions, which as a native of Hawaii he acquired relatively late in his development and which are painfully wrong for the target audience of rural working-class whites that he has been trying to reach. Obama on the road and even in major interviews has been droppin' his g's like there's no tomorrow. It's analogous to the way stodgy, portly Al Gore (evidently misadvised by the women in his family and their feminist pals) tried to zap himself up on the campaign trail into the happening buff dude that he was not. Both Gore and Obama would have been better advised to pursue a calm, steady, authoritative persona. Forget the jokes -- be boring! That, alas, is what reads as masculine in the U.S. "
I hate it when non-Blacks think they are experts on what they perceive to be Black culture. Her comments about "forget the jokes be boring" equals masculinity is contradictory since laters goes on to heap praise on Palin for her humor which equals feistyness and an element of masculinity.
"One reason I live in the leafy suburbs of Philadelphia and have never moved to New York or Washington is that, as a cultural analyst, I want to remain in touch with the mainstream of American life. I frequent fast-food restaurants, shop at the mall, and periodically visit Wal-Mart (its bird-seed section is nonpareil)."
I dunno, but I live in Chicago and I still go to fast food restaurants and malls. I don't do Walmart but that is because I disagree with their labor practices.
nea
Exactly. Sarah Palin gives a name and a face to so many pro-ilfe conservative, independent, modern women who have up until now had to keep their views under wraps for fear of being labeled a 'traitor to one's gender."
The left has until now been able to define 'feminism' and link it to an inflexibly 'pro-choice' agenda where the preservation of abortion rights is the determining factor in bestowing 'feminist' bona fides.
Paglia writes:
"But she (Palin) has every right to express her views and to argue for society's acceptance of the high principle of the sanctity of human life. If McCain wins the White House and then drops dead, a President Palin would have the power to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, but she could not control their rulings.
It is nonsensical and counterproductive for Democrats to imagine that pro-life values can be defeated by maliciously destroying their proponents. And it is equally foolish to expect that feminism must for all time be inextricably wed to the pro-choice agenda. There is plenty of room in modern thought for a pro-life feminism -- one in fact that would have far more appeal to third-world cultures where motherhood is still honored and where the Western model of the hard-driving, self-absorbed career woman is less admired.
But the one fundamental precept that Democrats must stand for is independent thought and speech. When they become baying bloodhounds of rigid dogma, Democrats have committed political suicide."
I have often argued on this site that supporting the overturning of Roe v. Wade will not outlaw abortion or criminalize women, but that 'scare tactic' is used to reflexively dismiss and intimidate pro-life women from making the ethical and moral casr against abortion.
Catholic Democrat politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden are forced to twist and lie about the teaching of the Catholic church and concede that 'life begins at conception' while still advocating for the killing of that life. The Catholic church has now called them out and set them straight. Catholic Democrats are no longer being allowed by the church to "have it their way.'
Like Pagalia, I live in middle America. I know countless successful, independent women who combine motherhood, careers and community service with stamina, resolve, dexterity and grace.
Sarah Palin represents these women and their definition of a 'modern woman' far more than Gloria Steinem or Naomi Wolf.
McCain, while older than (gasp) Pagalia's self-obsessed, self-righteous, baby-boom generation, he has a firm grasp of the future and he sees in Palin a truly 'modern woman' who is willing to live life on her own terms and in the face of unprecedented hatred being spewed by her opponents.
His judgment to trust Palin speaks volume about his character, his confidence, his optimism, and his commitment to the future of this country,
RobM
I re read Pagalia article. Her conclusion about big tent feminism is correct. Where she is wrong is supposing gov Palin is "... successful, independent women who combine motherhood, careers and community service with stamina, resolve, dexterity and grace. " The operative word where Pagalia is wrong is Gov palin as independent.
Gov Palin is by no objective definition is independent. She is a creature of religious intolerance. She hides it behind the notion that she is a lone ranch owner woman fiighting off wild indians(a ranch she would not have owned without the death of her husband and/or the death of all the other male familiy members). She exploits the unique American tolerance of religious belief advocating that everyone whom has not taken the evangelic view of the world is evil and that sice she is one of the chosen has the right to impose her religious view on a pluralistic society. This is a view Pagalia takes"If Sarah Palin tries to intrude her conservative Christian values into secular government, then she must be opposed and stopped."
Gov Palin has not taken the position of her counterpart. to paraphrase"I am a Roman Catholic. I accept by church's position as a matter of faith. but my belief in a pluralistic society says I can not impose my faith's morality on the rest of society."
Examing the context of Biden's statement, he agreed that life begins at conceptation. However in a pluralistic society he would not prevent a woman whom is raped from taking the RU4 86 within hours of it. Gov Palin by her belief would not only not allow it(not obseving the Catholic church position as an objective fact that sperm take 12-48 hours to get to an egg before they die) but would FORCE a woman to carry her rapists baby to term. How despicable is this action?
A careful rereading of Pagalia's article is she welcomes Palin celebrity as a rightful inclusion into a big tent, she recognizes her performance under pressure (giving her speech w/ a broken teleprompter), she acknowledged her guntoting style. Where Pagalia is strangley silent is if Palin is a good choice for the US.
Can we get a 527 ad asking: WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA IN 2008?
Okay, I'm watching Morning Joe (I know, it's my fault) and they're all over the McCain juvenile 101 ads, holding up the NY Post "Boar War" front page and never do they ever TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES and dispell the lies... They (Joe, Pat, Andrea, Chuck Todd, too) were yucking it up over both the juvenile lipstick-pig ad and the kindergarten sex-ed ad and, of course... ABSOLUTELY NO CONVERSATION ON EITHER CANDIDATES RECORD ON EDUCATION.
Well, we'll just looking at what's posted on the website OnTheIssues.org shows:
BARACK OBAMA: # First Senate bill: increase Pell Grant from $4,050 to $5,100. (Aug 2007) # Sponsored legislations that recruit and reward good teachers. (Sep 2004) # Voted YES on $52M for "21st century community learning centers". (Oct 2005) # Voted YES on $5B for grants to local educational agencies. (Oct 2005) # Voted YES on shifting $11B from corporate tax loopholes to education. (Mar 2005)
JOHN MCCAIN: # Voted NO on $52M for "21st century community learning centers". (Oct 2005) # Voted NO on $5B for grants to local educational agencies. (Oct 2005) # Voted NO on shifting $11B from corporate tax loopholes to education. (Mar 2005) # Voted NO on funding smaller classes instead of private tutors. (May 2001) # Voted NO on funding student testing instead of private tutors. (May 2001) # Voted NO on spending $448B of tax cut on education & debt reduction. (Apr 2001)
Plus Obama has his hands on the (1) Innovation Districts for School Improvement Act, (2) the Summer Term Education Programs for Upward Progress Act (STEP UP), (3) Education Opportunity Act, (4) the aforementioned HOPE Act (Higher Education Opportunity Through Pell Grant Expansion Act) and (5) the Predominantly Black Institutions Act which passed at the same time the Teacher Residency program did.

Can someone find some facts about Alaska and maternity leave? I saw a piece on it this morning about the laws being very bad in Alaska.
A little humor to start your day. Whether Democrat or Republican, I think you'll get a kick out of this An explanation of our present and future. Elect wisely. This sums it up! A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics? Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way:I am the head of the family, so call me The President. Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government. We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People. The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we will call him the Future. Now think about that and see if it makes sense.
So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.
The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now. The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about. The little boy replies: 'The President is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep sh!t.
So great and thanks for sharing! Just out of curiosity, how did the two of you become friends?

Okay, I was in Tuscaloosa, AL and saw an older red pickup truck driving along. Then, I see the driver a gray-haired older gentleman. Knowing the lay of the land, well I was suprised by what I saw next.
As I got closer, I saw he had signs on his car that said W, wrong. (Around Alabama, you see stickers on cars all the time that say W, the president.)
He also had an Obama bumper sticker on his truck. It was a prety cool, sight indeed.
Inaddition to this topic, this article has about 8 or 9 other articles - that are NOT so "McAncient" complimentary!! :>) :>) :>) Quite comprehensive, if you've missed some things!! :>) :>)
“Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,” said Governor Palin. “Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,” Governor Palin added. “Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.”
t looks like more than one prominent Georgia Republican likes to use the word "uppity" in regards to prominent African-Americans -- this time, it's the GOP nominee in one of the few House seats that Dems could possibly lose this year.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Rick Goddard, a retired Air Force major general running against conservative Dem Congressman Jim Marshall, referred in a radio appearance to "a very uppity newscaster" who had a testy TV exchange with Newt Gingrich at the Republican Convention. This appeared to be a reference to MSNBC reporter Ron Allen, who is black.
The Goddard campaign didn't deny that he was discussing Ron Allen, telling the Journal-Constitution that Goddard "simply evoked a word -- that by definition -- described the reporter's demeanor as being superior, arrogant and presumptuous."
This comes after Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) told The Hill that he believed both Barack and Michelle Obama were "uppity," then denied that there was any racial connotation to the word.
Really!! I thought that this term has made enough of the news that errybody has received an appropriate education! Just like the N-word, you DON'T call a Black person [or person of color, for that matter] "UPPITY!" "NO WAY!" "NO HOW!" "NO UPPITY!"
Whew!! Shaking my head Deep Breaths!! :>) :>)

The Kerry states, plus Colorado, Iowa, and New Mexico.
So, IF you were wondering how the "McAncient" Campaign can AFFORD all these ads, wonder no more! He splits the cost with the REPUG Party! READ ON!! :>)
By Matthew Mosk Most of the campaign ads that Sen. John McCain began airing Sept. 1 are taking a glancing shot at Democrats in Congress -- often just a two-second jab at the Democratic leader in the Senate, Harry Reid.
This is not because the McCain campaign has suddenly decided the best strategy to defeat Sen. Barack Obama is to run against other top Democrats in Congress. It's because of a loophole in the public financing laws that allows McCain to evenly split the cost of his ads with the Republican Party so long as the ads make at least a passing reference to the rest of the party's ticket.
Evan Tracey of the Campaign Media Analysis Group and Tim Kay of National Cable Communications -- two top media analysts -- both said they've noticed a growth in this emerging type of ad, known as a hybrid.
"Pretty much every spot they've done has been a hybrid ad," Tracey said.
How do the ads save McCain money? Well, consider that McCain has $84 million to spend between now and Election Day -- that's the federal allotment of money he decided to take during the general election contest. While the Republican National Committee will devote much of its privately financing to field operations, microtargeting, and voter contact, McCain will spend most of his public funding on television ads. If McCain can split the cost of his ads 50-50 with the party, he is essentially able to stretch his public dollars twice as far.
Maybe this explains why there have been few/no articles discussing his funding??
SSSSSnakes!! :>) :>)
