I have family in Houston and I am very concerned - they're not leaving. The winds alone will be like a tornado.

School is called off tomorrow!!! I'm calling it a hurricane holiday! I live in Houston & am not leaving either. We really need the rain, so hopefully we'll get some. The other hurricanes have not produced drop of rain over my house yet, so I'm hoping this one will wash my car.
The last hurricane that had a bad impact on Houston was Allison 2001. Some people evacuated. Right now the hurricane is a low category 2. I am not afraid.

ms. martin,
My whole family is in Houston. Everything will be ok.
Plantsmantx
Don't worry too much, Ms Martin. If they're in Houston, they are likely to be far enough away from the coast not to get the full brunt of the storm. From what I saw on the news, most of the city could, at the most, get minimal hurricane force winds (70-80 mph), which ain't no fun, but is not catastrophic.

I just checked on their site and saw how I can specify where I want my money allocated. I may just go with them. I was initially thinking a more specific Haiti focused organization would be better.....
Teacher
Haiti would be good or Cuba, because they also got hit hard. I support a mission called Love A Child in Haiti. They are Christian based if you care one way or another. Here is their charity navigator status:
You can go to their site after you've evaluated their spending allocation, etc.

My prayers are with the people of this region while my heart is broken with those who suffered before and after the storms in Haiti. When I learned a while ago that they were eating dirt patties my heart broke and now with the loss of life and fooding, ugh....
I know another commenter asked about a Michael Baisden effort but is anyone aware of a good source to donate on behalf of these folks.
Again, my prayers go out to the folks in Galveston....

Did you go to the Transafrica site?
JJai
I didn't really see a good link but I am thinking of World Food Program or Catholic Relief Services
