The RNC trotted a host of Hispanics up to the mics to speak on their issues, YET the ISSUE of IMMIGRATION on the RNC PLATFORM [which is where the action is] is devastatingT Please see the article!

One speaker, a female physician, made statements that health care for Hispanics is less that that for whites. She received FEW applause!! People were TALKING and GENERALLY IGNORING HER!!! They had SHOCKED LOOKS on their FACES! And the final applause was LESS than spirited!!! IMHO - SHE WAS STR8 DISSED!!!

IT WAS INSULTING!!!! BUT, she was in the WHITE SEA!!!

Abramoff Sentenced to Four More Years

Former lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced Thursday to 48 months in federal prison for charges relating to defrauding American Indian tribes and corruption of public officials.
The sentence, handed down by Judge Ellen Huvelle of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, is in addition to the 22 months Abramoff has already served.

Government prosecutors had asked that Abramoff serve only 39 more months; Huvelle increased that to a total of four more years.

“The true victims here are the public,” Huvelle said. “You have impacted severely the public’s confidence in the integrity of the government.”

Does anyone else feel that the Republican Party is looking more and more like the party of rednecks? Just looking at the convention crowd last night, I couldn't help but notice how poor, outdated and unattractive they all look. I used to believe that the Republican Party was for the rich, but there are definitely a lot of "hard working Americans" out there voting against their own interests. Aside from the politicians there, the other delegates looked like they're struggling to make it.

The convention crowd looks like a picture of America 50+ years ago. The Dem convention crowd looks like our future.

Well there were people of different ethnic backgrounds there. Few but they were there. That doesn't bother me. Most minorities tend to support the Democratic party. What does bother me is the VILE stuff that came out of the mouths of those people. It was like time shifted for a moment and Jim Crow was in the audience.

The Republicans are well aware that they can't possibly win the election if it is even partially decided based on issues. They need and intend to win despite the fact that Americans hate their positions on the issues, and to do that, they want to ensure that a majority of Americans love and respect the strong, honorable, principled, culturally familiar all-American mavericks John McCain and Sarah Palin (even if they don't agree with them on everything) while strongly disliking that wishy-washy, snooty, foreign, exotic, self-absorbed Eastern elitist Barack Obama (even if he says the right things on issues).

Democrats have clearly decided (yet again) to cede that lowly playing field to the GOP and are hoping (yet again) that those personality and cultural issues are not enough to outweigh the country's dislike of Republican policies. This year is indeed different -- dissatisfaction with the Government is higher than ever before, the GOP is as discredited as a party can be, and Obama is a more effective candidate than those who preceded him -- but the attacks last night were only the beginning, not the end. If John McCain remains -- even from the mouths of Democrats -- the Honored, Honorable, Principled, Heroic Maverick, the GOP chances will be as high as they can be.

I'm posting this not and it is not political per se but it does fall into the Race in America conversation.

I'm a Director at a Fortune 50 company. I'm relatively young so my success is something that I, along with my family and friends, are proud of.

A few days ago my boss, the VP of my organization along with the VP of a support organization met with their boss, the Executive VP to discuss career planning for employees. Based on my results and meetings I have had with him the EVP suggested an expanded role for me which would put me over the companies largest accounts based in the South. My boss said he wouldn't do that because I am black. The other woman in the meeting said she agreed because it was setting me up for failure because there are a lot of racist people in the world and I'd be dealing almost exclusively with white southern males. The EVP asked if I was capable of doing the job and they both said yes. The EVP then said we will never have a conversation like this again.

My boss, who is overly honest with me told me the whole conversation thinking that I would be okay with it and that I wold see it as him protecting me. I didn't see it that way. I am pissed because I have worked my butt off to get where I am, meet with white male executives all the time and have always been successful.

I'm at a loss on what to do, if anything, knowing that my career growth may be stunted because I am a black woman, and at even more of a loss that my boss seems to think this is okay.

If anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

hey pjamma - have you thought about working for another company? There are NO limitations at the job where I am and they completely support work/life balance.

They are pro - minorities, they invest in their employees and the community, we have groups for black professionals, hispanics, gay and lesbians, everything. They include mentoring programs and you can add to your current skillset as much as you want. There are challenging positions, client facing positions, some of our Partners work remotely (from home) some have limited travel, and some work in the offices. I have worked from home for over 8 years and got promoted at least 6 times, receive substantial bonuses at times twice a year and there is always opportunities to get some additional incentives depending on your role.

Not sure what your career path is or if you are remotely interested in seeing what is out there but. let me know the best way to connect with you to give you some information. Good luck to you.

Document the discussion, get some confirmation on it, then report them and file a suit.

I am also shocked that they told you. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Please document the incident and your feelings about it for posterity. Continue to document everything that is relevant to your job performance, as well as those assignments that you might feel you are qualified for but don't get. I also encourage you to record conversations about your job performance. I know it seems cloak and dagger, but if you think they aren't recording stuff, you're wrong. There were some people (Black) here who worked for an oil company and won a class action discrimination law suit because one of them had the presence of mind to record conversations. If you never end up using it, you'll just throw it away.

I also think you need to let some time pass so you can get over the initial shock of this incident. When you have a little more distance, you will be better able to assess if you have a future at this company or not, and if you are ok with having a future or not.

From what you wrote, I can tell you don't live in the south. There are a lot of stereo types about the south that simply aren't true. Blacks and whites have a weird but familiar relationship in the south. White poeple in the south are very use to seeing and being around Black people. The south also produces the lions share of Black politicians in the country, and it is way more integrated than many northern areas. I think Chicago is the most segregated city in the country. I'm saying all this to say that their argument is unsubstantialed. Maybe this is a test to see how much you want this promotion. Are you going to going to take no for an answer and fold or are you going to let them know that you believe you are the right person for the job and when can you get started? You can tell them that you forgive them for grossly underestimating your ability, intellect and excellence and inspite of it, you're willing to accept the position, perhaps on a trial basis. Let us know when you've changed their minds.

Thank you for your response. I did offer counter arguments and we will see what happens. The interesting thing is while I was with the company they recruited me from I gained respect and buzz because of what i did while managing one of the largest accounts based in the South. Also interesting, or disturbing, is during the interview for that promotion in my last job I was asked "how did I think I would be successful considering I was a young black female dealing with old white guys". I was able to convince them to give me the opportunity and ended up bringing over $100 million to the company and that shut them up.

I am so am just so frustrated having to deal with this again. I am really good. I'm much better then the next guy (and they are all guys).

I live in Northern California so while I may know better my executive team may not.

Val, I like your idea of suing, but it is a heavy decision to evaluate. I will not be hired again if I sue, that's the way it works. Because of the company I work for they will settle but unless I can get an equivalent amount to what i would earn in the next 35 years of working including interest, options, rate increases which take into account logical promotions I don't think its a good idea.

As far as finding a new job, considering this has been brought up in the only two companies I have worked for I'm not convinced it won't be different elsewhere. I'm starting to think (from looking around) that once you get into upper management the rules change. I now appreciate Michelle Obama even more. I use to think her job was no big deal, she was good and she deserved it. But now I'm learning It's really not that easy.

We just do...often out of ignorance or sometimes out of a desire to control or manipulate. I might say something to my kids or one of my students that really hurts their feelings, or they might say something to me. Coworkers can be rude. Bosses can be ignorant. Let us know how things play out.

The second day of the Republican National Convention ended with NBC’s prime-time special winning a competition of small audiences.

According to preliminary national data from Nielsen Media Research, the three broadcast networks combined racked up a viewership of less than 11 million viewers, compared with the 14.8 million viewers who watched the networks’ coverage on the comparable night of the GOP gathering in 2004. That's also down from the 12.48 million who watched Senator Hillary Clinton’s call for unity among Democrats last week at that party's convention in Denver.

Two factors are worth noting: Hurricane Gustav's assault on Louisiana had essentially set back the Republicans’ attempts to get momentum by a day. Also, Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman’s speech, which closed the GOP show in St. Paul, Minn. Tuesday night, was not expected to be a stem-winder—and it lived up to expectations.

Stephanie Miller, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Kiki McLean were on Larry King Live and they did a good job of defending Obama.

Here's what Wasserman Schultz said:
It was a tirade of attacks. And it was really surprising that the case that Governor Palin made for her candidacy for vice president is her experience in negotiating the sale of her state's plane on eBay. If that is an indication of her preparedness to run this country and have her hand on the pillar of America's foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, then we are in for a scary proposition.

You know, I thought she delivered it well. And that's about all the credit I can give her. You know, I've seen candidates for the student council in public schools in my district deliver speeches well also. That doesn't mean it's their turn to run the country. The American people want substance. They wanted to hear plans. They wanted to hear what direction does Sarah Palin think this country should go? Does she support universal health care? No, she doesn't. Does she support bringing our troops home from this misguided war in Iraq? She certainly doesn't. So she couldn't talk about any of those things. All she could do was shoot barbs at Barack Obama and Joe Biden. That's not going to carry her all the way through to November 4th, nor is it going to help John McCain.

I saw this on Larry King last night and it was hilarious, although congresswoman schultz's voice annoys me at times. Stephanie Miller reminds me of Kathy Griffin when she talks. She has a sort of raspy voice that delivers quick witted and biting sarcasm. I thought she was the best, of all the ladies, on the show last night.

I am so thankful for Stephanie Miller who has been a faithful surrogate for O when the others haven't.

I still think Wasserman-Schultz is passing and I think her voice is sultry. Note to Debbie: Its called relaxer. Get a jar of mild with a little black girl's face on it.

I think it is perceptive take on the speech. I would add that there's already a backlash brewing against this woman. What they did last night reminds me of this from Molly Ivins:

You know, I understand passions are high, but last night I read a lot of comments here on JJP, that in passing looked like the damn end of civilization. I went to bed thinking, tomorrow the hysteria will die down.

However, I am scanning the posts now and in some cases I see defeatism. Do some of you have absolutely no confidence in your candidate of choice? Leave the campaign running to Obama/Biden, something tells me, they know what they are doing.

Actually I'm very Zen about the whole thing. Obama hasn't gotten this far without having the smarts and shrewdness to pick his battles. He's very good at letting his opponents get overconfident and then hoisting them on their own petard (ask Hillary).

I think Palin's ultimate downfall will come from the media. Her taunting them reminds me of when Gary Hart ran for prez back in the day. He practically double dog dared the media to find dirt on him, and in a matter of days the papers and TV were plastered with pics of Donna Rice sitting in his lap. I think history is going to repeat itself here.

I feel what you are saying because I sensed it too. But I think this speech will be a wake up call for more people to volunteer for the Obama campaign. I saw some posts on Daily Kos by former Hillary supporters who at first weren't going to donate or volunteer and they said that after seeing that speech they are compelled to do so.

True, true. I read some of her speech before I read some comments here last night, and thought she must have been pretty formidible, but when I looked at some of the replay of actually delivering the speech, I said to myself, "Man, sheeettt". I saw and heard a woman delivering a string of hollow insults in a rather amateurish fashion. The reaction on the convention floor was very much over the top, considering her bland delivery. They were primed to do that. She was preaching to a choir of right-wingers who were going to vote for McCain anyway. You can't assume that the people who the Republicans need to convince had the same reaction to her speech. Remember, 38 million people saw Obama's acceptance speech, and it's not as if they don't remember it clearly enough to be able to compare and contrast the style AND content. She came off as a local politician reading a speech that you knew beyond a doubt was written by someone else.

I am in total agreement with all of you on this. This has not fazed me at all.
I know O will end up giving them a smackdown. The repubs only make up 28%
of the population. Where are they going to find enough voters to win? They have already maxed out their base!

I still think Obama will win because we have never had as smart and strategic a candidate. But the difference that worries me is Repubs. feel free to lie about their record and I think that is strategic too and works with folks who don't really investigate and assume the lies are true because the press repeats them. How do we counteract this?

Joe Biden was on Good Morning America and The Today Show this morning.

I only saw the GMA appearance and I thought his response to Palin's speech was kinda weak. He was asked if he was going to change how he approaches Palin and he said, "No". He said that he was on a plane and didn't hear her entire speech, only the last half of it. That she gave a good speech but that he noticed that she didn't mention anything about what they're going to do for the middle class, and that's what the people want to hear. He went on to say that he thought that she got in some funny zingers and he's glad that they weren't aimed at him.

That's actually not a bad reaction from Joe. Perhaps the best thing that Obama and Biden can do is to dismiss her as nothing more than cute and kinda funny.

Kinda weak is an understatement. He looked shell shocked. Senator Obama needs to hire Roland Martin. He's offered more of fierce response than any Democrat. He was pissed last night! He did not appreciate the attacks on community organizers. And that should have been Biden's response. He should laid out in passionate terms who community organizers are, the people who are the security blanket for when the government fails the most vulnerable. Remind voters that it was community organizers galvinzing their limited resources to help Katrina victims when George Bush and John McCain were celebrating McCain's birthday on a air strip.

I can't believe their weak ass response! Obama was hoping he put the Clintons behind him, but now he may need her to salvage his presidency. Fuck!

David Plouffe gave the same response as Martin. Biden is right to give such response. We have to wait and see the polls. I think people are overestimating the effect of Palin's speech. She did not explained her self. When Biden said that he doesn't know her it was to reinforce the point that she did not do a good job introducing herself.

Roland's response was so on the money! Every Obama surrogate needs to watch that clip and take notes. THAT'S how you go after these SOBs!

She may be a good politician but she cannot be taken seriously. Palin's rhetoric was one of the past. She didn't mention any challenges of the 21st century unless it was energy and that she talked about using 20th century solutions to a problem of the 21st century. She also has no standing in criticizing Obama because she has not walk the walk. With a pregnant 17 yr old daughter, she has no business casting stones when her own house is not in order.

Women like my mother, who chose to focus on her family and raise 5 children, chose to stay at home. She was ridiculed by neighbors when she became pregnant with my brother at age 40. 'Don't you have enough children?' A woman sneered. "I feel sorry for you, stuck at home with all those kids."
But she was NEVER "stuck at home.' She was involved in her church and community, running the women's club at church, teaching Sunday school, volunteering for more boards and committees than I can count.

My mom had a son with 'learning disabilities' but she always felt that to 'label' him so broadly was to deny him the opportunity to realize his full potential. She battled
teams of teachers who felt they knew more about my brother and his abilities and his own mother. Thanks to her unwaivering faith in him, and her advocacy on his behalf, his is a college graduate and successful engineer.

My mom was pro-life when such a stance made a woman a social pariah. But she never gave up, never backed down. She supported local, state and national politicans who shared her commitment and she spent her last hours on Earth, marching in a 4th of July parade, in support of a new canidate, in her newest community, waving to the crowd and passing out candy, when she suddenly collapsed and died. A citizen soldier... like Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin represents everything my mother was and all that she wished for me.

A culture affirming of life and family. An independent, indefatigable, American spirit of faith and optimism. vs A 'do you own thing,' selfish, victim hood.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the famous Democrat once said, "culture is more important than politics.'

This election will turn on that observation. I believe he will be proven right.

How many of those people were going to vote for McCain anyway? Pretty much all of them. If that was her target audience, she chose the wrong target. The Republicans lost their majority in Congress in '06 exactly because of the actions connected with the kind of rhetoric she offered last night. It remains to be seen whether or not those people that they really do need to reach will be persuaded by a string on insults delivered by the lady who runs the jewelry kiosk at the mall.

I think accomplished conservative women are insulted by this pick and the hot mic incident with Noonan yesterday confirmed this. We need to show working class women that Palin cuts off their health benefits but uses her tax payer paid health
insurance for her pregnant teen and handicapped kid but cuts it off for them--plus she is not a stay at home mom.Never has been.

Palin didn't stay at home--she has been dragging those babies around for show to promote her career. She doesn't follow the bible--she was pregnant before she married as is her daughter. She cut support for handicapped children and unwed teens. She doesn't followJesus' teachings as she lies about her record.This is what I mean about the lying and repetition of lies. by the Repubs, No shame whatsoever.

I've thought about this all day at work and I am not about to hi-5 children having children --Bristol and her shotgun wedding is not a badge of pride for Palin. And Palin is putting alot of folks who are not well off in danger- a pregnant teen with no family to back them up can end up on the street as a prostitute or dead. Palin cutting services for poor teens does just that. I'd like to smack her right now

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

Calling around to a couple of Public Affairs Officers (PAO) who would be handling the flow of information about Track and his unit, VoteVets.org found out that, first, Track is not deploying on September 11. He may be part of a deployment ceremony that day, before going to Kuwait, though one Public Affairs Officer said that any details of the upcoming ceremony hadn't been made public yet by the military.

Governor Palin may have spilled the beans on that one, while showing she doesn't know the difference between a soldier deploying to Iraq vs. one preparing to deploy to Iraq. And while not illegal, if she really did believe that's when he's deploying to Iraq, then she didn't know enough to keep quiet about that to keep from violating OPSEC - something a potential Commander in Chief should know.

Option a) isn't really necessary, since he had Palin take care of that tonight, so I'm going with b). He only wins if he gets independents, and they weren't swayed by Palin, so he has to clean-up her mess.

OK, maybe I'm being chauvinist here, but I am FFFFFFFFFFFFF'ING ANGRY that Giuliani Time and Paling sneered at my wife's career. Just like Obama, she's got a Harvard Law JD (and MTS to boot) but instead of going to a fat-cat firm, where our classmates are now pulling in $250K+, she's making MINIMUM WAGE fighting for global economic justice. She works 14 hour days and is worried sick every day about how to keep the organization afloat while also making sure they're making a real difference.

Oh, and btw Ms. Palin, who do you think is going to get out the vote on election day if not community organizers? Oh, right... PAID Republican operatives. (The family of a friend of ours, who are staunchly Republican, was called a few months ago by a McCain fundraiser and told them "Not this year -- we're supporting Obama." The caller sheepishly admitted that he was, too -- "This is just my job").

Thanks for your support everyone (including GreenLadyHere) -- surfing the blogosphere I'm heartened to see that the attacks on community organizers has really triggered a strong reaction from a pretty wide swath of people. I'm also realizing that the attacks are pretty carefully calibrated: few rural people know "community organizers," and a lot of faith-based organizers don't call themselves "community organizers" (I guess my wife, who works with Christian churches, doesn't call herself that either). Nasty stuff.

Expect a completely on-message, moderate, charming, conciliatory John McCain tonight, or else he is toast.
