Jill if it's one thing Black People know how to do is survive with NO MONEY.

Our grandparents and parents did it, and they taught US how to do the same thing. My mom always warned me about "keeping up with the Joneses" because the Jones family may look like they had everything, but you found out later that Mr. Jones was in debt up to his ass and lost everything when he got laid off that refinery job (I grew up in Houston, you know).

Thanks for a very grounded and inspirational post in otherwise turbulent and ever-changing times. I'm going to follow all your guidelines and add one more: Vote for Obama AND Cong/Senate Dems come November in order that he has a mandate to move this country in a new and positive direction

Ain’t nothing like black folk to be resourceful and pull together. We’re survivors.

Yep. There's more than a few of us who come from humble beginnings, so we already have those skills to make something out of nothing.

I think another reason why I'm taking this in stride is because it's just me, no spouse or kids to support. I can't even imagine the stress I would be under having to provide food, clothes, tuition, etc., so I'm sending prayers and positive vibes for my fellow posters who have those responsbilities in this climate.

"We are going to be called upon to make some serious sacrifices in the future: Generation X, Generation Y and the Millennials. In order to be as successful in meeting the challenges to come with the same pluck as our grandparents, we will have to be that brave, that strong, that hopeful."

Some of us have sacrificed in Afghanistan and Iraq, but all of us will soon be asked to sacrifice in ways that are less noticeable but still important. Our elders think we lack character, but soon we will be asked to carry them on our shoulders even as we haul up our own kids on our backs. Adversity breeds strength. We will be strong!

Kudos for this post. Thank you, Jill. Being proactive is definitely the ticket. As one of 11 children in my family. We had to learn the rules of survival as soon as we popped out of the womb. Even with Jim crow, we survied. I've tried to live a life where I can be as self sufficient as possible and promised myself that I wanted more in life than to just survive. I wanted to thrive! Now thriving probably means something completly different for other folk. I had to determine what it means to me.

A decade ago, 9 friends and I went on a wilderness survival trek for 14 days in the Black Mountains of North Carolina.
This included 2 days and 2 nights of a "Vision Quest." (time spent alone in silence. We were asked to contemplate on our life purpose.)

We had a guide and were allowed to bring only one change of clothing, rations of rice, homemade cooking pans made of large coffee tins, quart size containers, but no water. We had to find our own water and add anerobic drops to clear it of parasites and bactria. We learned about edible plants and berries, and how to find them. We left all watches at home and used no compasses. No tents. We slept under the stars in sleeping bags.

This was the real SURVIVOR deal. No cameras rolling, no competition,or food brought in. Today, my husband and I take advantage of the great outdoors and go camping twice a month. And no one to vote us off the mountain We have great parks here in Minnesota. Foregoing movies, tv, theatre, radio, and spending more time with our immediate family and closest friends. Training ourselves to eat only when hungry, and eating healthier, often requires one to eat less Turning down the outer noise and nuturing our quiet time helps us to gain a clear perspective on what we need to do for our survival. I like the idea of transitioning off the grid.

I guess I'm just too stubborn be anybody or entity's victim.

Anyone looking to rent a room in Seattle? I'm nice and I have one lazy cat.

Not really joking, but on to other things. I really appreciate the common sense of the post. We/me have listened to The Millionaire Mind and heard over again "leverage, leverage, leverage" well right now, I 'm thinking I could do without hearing that.

Off to clean up extra room.

Excellent post! I have done without before and can do it again but It just pisses me off that the people that got us into this situation are the ones that we are supposed to trust to get us out of it. While we do without they are coasting and sleeping well at night because their bills will be paid on time!

Wonderful post. Especially #4. Thank you! My knowledge of the economy is limited to a few Suze Orman books, so I need this kind of practical advice and encouragement. This afternoon, I was actually about to head over to Best Buy after work - meanwhile, I can't find a gas station that is still selling gas and my bank just got bought by another bank and Congress can't get their act together..... so I took my butt on home, grateful for the little things that I do have. Yes, we are resourceful! (Yes we can!)

Wonderful post. Especially #4. Thank you! My knowledge of the economy is limited to a few Suze Orman books, so I need this kind of practical advice and encouragement. This afternoon, I was actually about to head over to Best Buy after work – meanwhile, I can't find a gas station that is still selling gas and my bank just got bought by another bank and Congress can't get their act together….. so I took my butt on home, grateful for the little things that I do have. Yes, we are resourceful! (Yes we can!)
