This is actually quite interesting. Thanks for sharing the video clip, I had missed that. I'm tracking how the markets are reacting to the bailout myself and appreciated your insight.

I disagree with Ms. Reardon.

I'm tired of Dems having to walk on eggshells to protect the feelings of Repubs. It's time to tell the truth and shame the devil.

If those Repubs are so sensitive and egotisical that they would rather be vindictive than put their constiuents's best interests first, then the onus is on them not the Dems.

The best we can wish for at this point is the Dems writing up their own bill for a vote on Thursday.

I agree. I think the failed bailout is a blessing in disguise. It gives the Dems a golden opportunity to make a bill that will benefit the ordininary people. All they need is a simple majority; they don't need the Repubs.

The Dems could say: "The reason the Repubs didn't back the bill was not because they had a fundamental disagreement with its provisions. In fact, they were going to vote for it. The real reason they didn't back it is because of a speech. They put their egos before the American people".

Agreed H&F - we're all too conscious of the stakes here. The bailout plan as it stood was a shock doctrine attempt to take advantage of the financial crisis and take what little is left of our national treasure. It didn't address ANY of the root problems. Todd, read the first part of the alternatives above. FDIC is one or 2 big bank failures away from being broke. There are other solutions that should be put on the table that are more responsible and will help put us back on track.

As always, God's divine timing is at play here. It's significant that this bailout/attempted robbery took place a month before the entire House and 1/3 of the Senate is up for reelection. The American people, thanks in part to Sen. Obama's community-based campaign, are better understanding that they have power and don't have to take just any bs that's presented to them.

The Dow loss more money today than this so called 'Bailout Bill'. I think we are "cutting off our nose to spite our face". This Republican Bill wasn't a good one and the Dems massaged it the best they could so it had some basic things (some of what Obama wanted). The best we can wish for at this point is the Dems writing up their own bill for a vote on Thursday. This is a big gamble since a lot can happen in 3 days. just remember your employers payroll comes from credit.. Credit that is getting scarce.

I just think it is a delicate situation not as simple as bailing out big wigs. The sky possibly is falling

Obama/Biden 08

um, we're not quite daft and pretty aware of the connection. the thing going on here is that wall st. and main st. are playing a game of chicken. the deal that will be negotiated, with congress in the middle, is one between the execs and the masses. the masses are discovering power in lighting fire under the lawmakers who now have to go back and get a better deal from the execs. the fact that wall st. hasn't opted out proves your point, but not in the way you make it: wall st. is directly connected to main st. but in such a dire situation, that connection is not a one-way deal.

Are you peple out of your mind?! All of your 401Ks will take a hit (especially the people near retirement can no longer retire), people are now going to start losing their jobs, more an more banks are going to fail because everyone is pulling their money out of the banks. The entire economy is going to come to a standstill. Nobody will be able to get a loan nobody will buy houses, so the housing market will break through what everybody thought was a bottom. More and more people will default on their loans because of many reasons. no job, their house is worth less than appraisal minus the equity. I cant believe you people dont know that wall st is directly connected to Main St and the common person.

As long as these alternatives are going to free up liquidity IMMEDIATELY. One of the networks my wife works with is indicating that they may go under if they can't get a bank loan within the next week or two. This is a nonprofit organization -- not some kind of big corporation. Ask small business owners in your neighborhood how the financial situation is looking for them. Wall Street problem are our problems, whether we like it or not. People are losing jobs because of the credit crunch.

It may feel crappy but we may not be able to stop the bad guys from profiting if we want to fix this. And maybe right now all we can pull of is a short-term fix, a tourniquet to keep ourselves from bleeding to death, but we'll still need to go after the real problem later.

What I love about Pelosi's speech is that she sounds like your grandma when she's talking to you about how you've been acting a fool. Your mother would yell at you, but your grandma would look you in the face and be like "Look at the mess you made. You know you made that mess. And you have the nerve to tell me how to clean up your mess". No yelling, just shaming you with the truth.

I've been waiting for Neo-Cons to hang themselves politically with their laissez-faire, trust corporations attitude. But I am mad as heck that they have hurt us in the process.

I used to be Moderate, and slowly swung way over the Progressive side over a seven year period. And it was simply because of the ridiculousness of the far right of the Republican party. I'm telling y'all, my friends who are still Republicans are paying attention to Obama now, because they finally realize what I've been telling them. Their party is no longer about small government, it is about Socialized Capitalism. Hopefully most of you have friends across the politcal spectrum, have some serious, respectful conversations with them. You would be facinated to see how much the shift against Neo-Cons has turned people viscerally towards Obama, even if they are trying to be party loyalists.

Good summary, but if Nancy Pelosi had stuck to her promise to "drain the swamp" when she became Speaker, there may have been more prevention of this mess than we'll ever know.

She was too busy swimming with the sharks before deciding to climb out and drain said swamp. The people called Congressional offices at a 100 to 1 clip demanding Bush be impeached, and she took THAT off the table.

This is an election year, and all of the House is up for re-election. Those who voted for this bill will find primary challengers in 2010. Book it.

Much obliged for this summary. It was interesting to see the markets (the dudes who run it for real) talking to congress (and, by extension, us). That dow jones moved in almost a one-to-one ratio on the news - bailout anticipation = up. no deal rumour = down.

People calling their congressmen have put those congressmen dead in the middle: "Do I pay them dudes who are hounding me or do I keep my job? That was the "conversation" as the markets dipped, saying, "we'll tank this thing if you don't pay us." Glad the people held in there for round 1 upset.
